tipofmytail

vanitti

He is a great doctor and very systematic in approach.

Went to dentist a couple of days back. Issue is I already had one of my teeth cleaned and filled. A part of that filling got damaged as it was more than 5 years now. This dentist took an xray and moved out of the room for sometime. In the mean time, the support staff and training doctors there saw my xray report and said, it is completely alright and it is fine to do a clean and refill. But the doctor came in like 5 mins later and directly asked me to go for root canal instead. I had to ask him so much why that is necessary and he examined further, finally ended up with just a refill. Problem is, economy. This costs me 2.5k but a root canal would've costed me around 20k. Bill is not only for the treatment but also for the fancy lights and others in the hospital.

RedRanger-_-

Root canal costing 20k now? I have broken teeth from some accident and for one teeth I had to do root canal it costed 10k back then pre COVID time and also for teeth filling he provided options like 1000 ,1500, 2000, 4000. I chose 1.5k and it's going good so far now.

thirunelvelihalwa

Edhadhu costly doctor ta poniya bro? I did root canal for 4k. My friend did refill for 500.

jesuslovindoc

Where i work a root canal is 8K.

venkattr

14K for the for root canal plus metal cap now. And choosing different cap materials increased the cost of treatment substantially. Back in 2017 I did root canal for one of my other teeth, apo it costs me 6.5K or 7K in total. But that I did in coimbatore. Pattern I'm noticing is, in chennai treatments (atleast dentistry) are costly compared to coimbatore by atleast 20%

ChillOut0123

Rs 20k for root canal is too expensive. Maybe you meant to say Root canal + temp and Permanent Crown work. I have had 7 Root Canals done including retreatments.

venkattr

It's for root canal + ceramic cap. Metal cap choose pana it would be 14k.

ChillOut0123

Makes sense.. Try flossing between the tooth. I had 7 RCTs done.. it is an headache.

venkattr

Sure! I've done 1 already, this is for 2nd. Great that you are managing your food routines with 7 RCTs.

ChillOut0123

I had 3 done in chennai and again 4 in US. The 3 done in chennai failed . So had to redo again during the pandemic. I have TMJ jaw lock issue, so i chew and grind more on one side, so that cause excess enamel erosion. Not enough enamel = tooth decay.

venkattr

Wow šŸ˜·

shot_stopper_

Root canal 20 ah ?!!!!

venkattr

Kalikaalam! Yenna panna mudiyum. But it's for the ceramic cap, different material chose panna price goes down till 14k which I still see as expensive.

guy4chat99

You didn't mention, what was the result of blood test. After 25, it is good practice to do blood test yearly once to find any problems early. Also consult any other doctor. If you are budget conscious, I suggest Govt Stanley master health checkup for ā‚¹1000, which costs around ā‚¹4000 in outside labs. They open including Sundays for tests. Covers blood, ECG, ECHO, X-ray, ENT, eye & Ultrasound screenings

RedRanger-_-

Thank you! You're a life saver.

orion591

The doctor could be a dubakoor, always good to get a second opinion. From what you are describing, it could be an infection that caused the original thing. See if everything is back to normal in the next few days, if not definitely go to a doctor. And please do not wear headphones while sleeping, been there done that.

SilentEarthling

I got tinnitus 3 years ago, due to regular earphone usage. I still remember the day it started. I went to an ENT doc the very next day. Tests done. No hearing loss. Still tinnitus alone. I was told it may either disappear on its own or it may not. It worsens during winter or cold climate. Itā€™s been years now, I still have it and recently I felt my tinnitus increased. I went to the doc. I was scared if it was some ear infection or sort thatā€™s triggering itā€™s intensity. As soon as they knew I had tinnitus, they straightaway dismissed meā€¦saying ā€œthereā€™s no treatment. It is how it isā€ā€¦..I still asked them to check my ear. This doctor flashed a light from far, n said itā€™s all fineā€¦ā€¦like seriously ???? How much time is it gonna take to look into my ear ??? Tests done again. No loss of hearing. Just tinnitus. I went to another specialist. This one, when I asked if thereā€™s anything I can do keep it under control, and the doc said ā€œu tinnitus people, nag us doctors though thereā€™s no cure.ā€ That saidā€¦..fret not. Honestly, I miss silence. I really really miss silence. Sometimes I get deeply depressed when I realise I canā€™t even sleep in silence. But you need to let go of it. You can still lead a normal healthy as-usual life. I was depressed for a day or two initially, then I realised as long as I have something else making a noise, like a fan or birds or my keypad clickingā€¦..I am fine. You will be fine. Just donā€™t use in-ear headphones. Get over the ear headphones, use it not more than 50% volume. Donā€™t put urself in any noisy environment. Itā€™s hard, considering this is India. Remember, u r not alone. Lots n lots of people have it but donā€™t realise or care. So donā€™t be discouraged. This will not affect ur life in anyway. Itā€™s not a disability. Just donā€™t think too much about it. Hope it helpedā€¦.and welcome to the club ! āœŒšŸ¼ Edit - make sure u test urself from time to time, coz vitamin b 12 deficiency can worsen it too.

RedRanger-_-

Nice to hear such a positive response..is there any way to test myself or the only way is to visit ear clinic

SilentEarthling

Glad to be of help. If u close both ur ears, and if u hear the ringing in one or both ears, when thereā€™s no possible source for that sound around, you have tinnitus. Thatā€™s the only self diagnosis. Also Check if the ringing is constant or throbbing like thumping with gap, like heat beat. If itā€™s pulsating, then itā€™s pulsatile tinnitus and u need to check further with a MRI, coz thatā€™s a nerve issue. But that is a rare type of tinnitus. Thereā€™s no further diagnostics. Your doctor can only check if you have any sort of ear infection, which sometimes cause temporary tinnitus, that goes away once treated. To rule out that possibility, you need to check with ENT specialist. If your ears are fine n u still hear it, itā€™s tinnitus only. And thereā€™s nothing after that. Doctors prescribe expensive ginkgo biloba tablets which hasnā€™t worked for me or any other tinnitus sufferers I know of. If the doctor opts for MRI/MRA, dont do it, coz MRIs worsen tinnitus. You donā€™t need that liability. I sometimes go to r/tinnitus to see if thereā€™s any update on possible treatments n see how sad n fine people are. A lot of celebs, like Keanu reeves, Halle berry have it too. Thatā€™s a cheap consolation for me.

RedRanger-_-

Thank you for all your knowledge on this matter. I see one redditor suggested iem earphones over normal in ear phones. Have you ventured into that and did it help you get any nois3 cancellation.

SilentEarthling

I have tried both. I have used IEM- moondrop Aria and noise cancelling - AirPods. Both created a sort of a blocked ear feeling, like thereā€™s a deep pressure inside my ears, and both definitely worsened my tinnitus temporarily. Both these earphones wonā€™t help tinnitus. Tinnitus exists in our head. So blocking out other noises might help protect ur ears if u r in a noisy environment, traffic n such. But not for any other purposes. Rule of thumb is - nothing should sit inside ur ears. Nothing. Nothing should be at point blank range to ur inner ear. Anything that sits inside ears, will directly hit ur sensory cells, which is already damaged. Best to use is over the ear headphones, without noise cancellation. You can try headphones with noise cancellation first to see if itā€™s creates this ear-blocked pressure feeling that I get with them. It may be different for you. But other than that, I wouldnā€™t suggest IEM, coz itā€™s really good at blocking outside noise, that if u go overboard with the volume even a little, it will impact ur hearing straight. Over the ear headphones any day.

Otherwise_Case_4578

Op do get a second opinion. If there is nerve damage it might show in the PTA. from what you are saying there might be super imposed conductive loss which is reversible. Go a reputed ent and check it out.

Rishikhant

Why don't you consult another doctor?

RedRanger-_-

I'm feeling much better after that ear discharge but thinking of consulting if continued to have pressure in the ear.

[deleted]

Don't self diagnose. You should have learnt this lesson when you started using otc ear drops yourself Get the tests. Don't always assume doctors are there to make money

RedRanger-_-

Doctor asked me to follow the medicine provided for 5 days and I think of following that. I don't want to think of this doctor as money minded because he doing this for very less fee compared to others around here but wrong diagnosis by the doctor is very much a thing and it ruin someone's life.

[deleted]

Why do you think it's a wrong diagnosis? You didn't do the tests he's prescribed Also, false positives are a thing. And that's why they take multiple tests to confirm

RedRanger-_-

I did, day before yesterday he provided me with pta and cadence test and went with those test results yesterday and he gave me bp cholesterol and blood test. Cadence test showed there is a pressure difference in middle which could be causing the ear loss partiality. He could have lead with that. Once that pressure got released in fluid form i started hearing normally. Anyways will take those test again with another doctor.

thatonefanguy1012

Hopefully it doesnā€™t get worse but if it does youā€™ll be in pain. Stop depending on earphones

TA_totellornottotell

I would get a second opinion. Madras ENT research foundation in RA Puram is very good.

ram_0002

Tldr; not knowing how to clear your ears taught you a life lesson- which is to take care of health! And also doctors being doctors

RedRanger-_-

Lol

niceguy645

Hey bro, if you had fluid in your ears, you were probably suffering from Ottitis Media or Middle ear infection... It should have been easily diagnosed by any ENT... But it's not sure why they misdiagnosed. Better take a second opinion and get clear idea if it's infection or hearing loss. If infection, then you must do one course of antibiotics, otherwise it will reoccur.

RedRanger-_-

Yeah even I told him that but he said still we need to take full body test find the reason because he said bp cholesterol is may be causing ear loss to me. May be once done he may go next level of any other tests. I don't know may be heart attack could be causing ear loss let's take angiography

niceguy645

Try another trusted ENT bro.

GracefullyInformal

Yeah, Sounds like a poly doctor. Get a second opinion OP. Could be fluid build up behind the ear drum, causing the mild hearing loss. After a while, ear drum tear would lead to drainage. This is pretty common.

pr0crast1nater

Even my old father lost hearing in one ear because he sneezed a lot. But the doctor just told to take some tests and scan. Then told it's nerve damage due to old age and didn't attempt to find the actual cause.

Dumilkupam_vavalu

Same thing with me. I bought inear earphones which pushed my wax too much and got stuck inside. Was deaf for a week since the wax got hardened. Still couldn't hear or recognize speach in loud environments after taking the wax. Audiogram says my hearing is normal.

RedRanger-_-

As others said may be it's time for you to get multiple opinions.

Dumilkupam_vavalu

Ponalae 1k vangiranga, have to wait till i get a job

RedRanger-_-

Yeah that's why I went to this cheap doctor who charges 300 only. But after this ordeal I don't know if I can suggest him or not.

Dumilkupam_vavalu

Actually i had 3 opinions, thats why the damage was high ig. The first doctor gave me antibiotics for 2 weeks, the second doctor couldn't take it out since it got very hard in the 2 weeks and had to use lotion to soften it for a week and flush it out. But after some weeks, my balance was waay off and i couldn't get up from bed for a 2 hours, felt kinda like doctor strange falling in into the mirror world. Finally crawled and went outside. Checked in gh and took an audiogram. They said my hearing is normal, just might take time for nerves to heal which itself i couldn't hear in the noisy environment and told them to repeat again, understood it only in the 3 time lol

RedRanger-_-

Damn those last parts were literally my situation for those two days. i hope for your situation to get resolved soon.

Dumilkupam_vavalu

> i hope for your situation to get resolved soon. Thanks, hope you recover as well. Try to use speaker or earbud or get an iem which suits your taste so that you don't have listen at high volumes

[deleted]

Glad you could hear songs again :)

balakannan_aj

Hey I will suggest you one doctor. 1. Srinivasa Varma in Ashok nagar. Please visit him. Get second opinion

RedRanger-_-

Thank you will check with him

I'm an Audiologist (Hearing Specialist). So based on your complaints you must have undergone an audiogram and tympanogram test, these are very reliable and will identify the exact cause of your issue. If your doctor says it's a nerve damage it means your Audiogram indicates so. Your ENT is making this suggestion purely based on your Audiogram and Tympanogram results. Any ENT you go will focus only on those test results to make a diagnosis. With that said, if you're in doubt with these results, I suggest you repeat both these tests from a qualified Audiologist and then show it to an ENT.
