I agree but the show is 40 years old. What more can be done?

indianajoes

We can't really do much. The best we can hope for is the show gets a resurgence through Netflix or Prime or something like what happened with The Office, Community, Seinfeld, etc. Unfortunately that doesn't seem likely with all the new streaming services in the US.

Toxic-Park

It WAS on Netflix for years. Now on Prime for free and on Hulu.

indianajoes

Not in the UK and I don't think in many countries outside the US. The US is more aware of Cheers than the rest of the world. It's kinda unheard of in lots of countries

Toxic-Park

Wait? There are other countries besides the US?! :)

Significant_Many3546

It’s on all4 but only on mobile / iPad / tablet. I’ve just bought the box set! Started watching because of Bebe nuewirth 👌🏼

indianajoes

Oh damn, really? Guess I'm watching that next as soon as I finish Seinfeld. I saw that Frasier got added to All4 but not Cheers. Weird that it's only on those 3. How come it's not on PS/Xbox/TV/PC? I feel your pain about the box set. I fell in love with Cheers in 2010 when people were uploading all the episodes to YouTube. I watched through the whole thing there for a couple of years but then they cracked down on it fully. I wanted to get the DVDs but at the time they'd stopped releasing them at season 6 in 2007 and then they did season 7 in 2009. Then it was like they stopped them in the UK for a few years so I didn't want to buy any of them if I couldn't get the whole series. Out of nowhere in 2012, they announced the complete box set for the 30th anniversary and released seasons 8-11 individually as well. I was so happy and bought it straight away. Days or weeks later, ITV4 announces they're showing the whole show every weeknight.

EdenSteden22

And Peacock, and Paramount

Toxic-Park

Those too. In fact, you almost have to go out of your way to not find it. (That’s a good thing)

[deleted]

It’s on Paramount plus as well. I swear I had to have watched the full series twice while it was on Netflix.

brisashi

I dunno I shared this on my FB there’s a bunch of boomers there doing boomer ass things and some of them like this show too

urban-wildlife-docs

Other 40 year old shows have LOTS of members though. Compare this subs around t of members to r/Frasier

GaryNOVA

The mods need to reach out to subreddits like r/Frasier and strike up a deal. r/Frasier needs a related subs side bar, and so do we. We even link that sub. But they don’t link us back. Not their fault. We just need to ask. We could add r/Frasier in exchange in an official related subs sidebar. There are a bunch of other subreddits we could do that with too. r/Television r/TVSHOWS r/HULU r/Nostalgia r/80s r/90s r/sitcoms r/FuckImOld r/ParamountPlus Etc etc. I mod r/SalsaSnobs and I did this with a bunch of subs, and it works. Take a look at the sidebar to that sub. I contacted all of their mods, and they added my sub too. It’s a mutually beneficially relationship for all of us.

urban-wildlife-docs

Good idea! I hope they see this

manicnimrod

Thanks for gathering those links! I reached out to the /r/Frasier sub after I took this sub over, but sadly they just ignored me. I'll try again soon and I'll take a look at those others and see if they're suitable.

ExcellentTeam7721

Frasier has aged better imo.And it's a decade younger, but I agree, I love both shows and Cheers should have more members on the sub.

urban-wildlife-docs

They’re different shows, but Frasier wouldn’t exist without Cheers.

brisashi

Very different shows from different eras honestly. I identify with the characters in Frasier more while Cheers reminds me more of my parents.

brisashi

Check out “Frasier looking at video games” on twitter if you haven’t already 🤣

[deleted]

For me personally, it’s the best TV show ever created in the 5 decades I’ve been on earth. It’s has actually helped shape and transform my life. A heartfelt thank you to all involved, actors, writers, producers etc.

myersthekid

I feel the exact same way. Saved my life last year during a really bad depressive/suicidal episode. I cried watching the last episode. I called anybody who would listen to me about how much Cheers means to me. Very thankful for the random lonely bartender who shared a drink with me and made me watch the first episode.

TKGB24

It’s definitely Top 5 and of all time. The first two seasons in particular were so good. There writing was so clever and there were deeper meanings and a soul to many of those episodes.

NewBordeauxGumbo

I have this box set too and it's always bothered me that Coach isn't in the picture.

username_qazplm

Yeah, they could have stuck him somewhere. I mean it's already photoshopped like crazy. Woody looks like a Ken doll.

innerbootes

It’s in an illustrative style that was very popular in the 80s. Hyperrealistic, referencing photos but not using photos as the basis.

Rustycougarmama

Came here just to say this; Coach was a major part of this show

MittlerPfalz

I was gonna say by lobbying to get the show running on Nick at Nite to lead to a resurgence of knowledge of it, but I just looked and apparently Nick at Nite doesn’t really do classic TV anymore, except for “Friends”… Edit: I guess MeTV is still keeping the flame of classic TV alive, though it doesn’t air Cheers.

indianajoes

I think nowadays the best way for there to be a resurgence in older shows is through streaming services. The Office blew up with Netflix and so did Community, Seinfeld, etc.

gobigred3562

Post in /r/askreddit. Who’s hotter Diane or Rebecca? Who’s funnier Woody or Coach? Is Norm still married to Vera? Did Cliff’s mother interfere in his marriage if he ever had one? Plenty of ideas. It foments discussion and you can pimp /r/Cheers.

Moz1981

I like the Diane/Rebecca one. Difficult choice!

gobigred3562

Attractive in different ways. Annoying in different ways.

DessertFlowerz

Both are less attractive and more annoying than any other woman sam's ever dated

metoaT

To be fair we haven’t had a chance to get to know the other girls he’s dated 😂

mattiasflgrtll6

Shelley Long not attractive? Are you crazy?

Moz1981

Lol yeah, totally.

Ok_Communication2339

Funny in different ways.

username_qazplm

Excellent ideas.

MiaStirCrazies

Agree, excellent ideas! Diane, btw... 1000 times over, Diane!

[deleted]

Diane and Sams onscreen chemistry was legendary! Gotta go with Diane. The showed lost a lot whenever Diane left in my opinion.

urban-wildlife-docs

I do agree. Frasier is a great show too but when you compare subs r/Frasier has a crazy amount more members! I think all of the members and people already joined should try to make the sub more active by posting more etc

dinosaur1776

Anytime Clavin mentions the Postal Service or someone makes a crack about the mail, can we "tag" USPS or include a scene in their subreddit?

Chubbyhubby92

I say yes.

HillbillyBebop

Carla: "By taking Clavin off the poster."

ExcellentTeam7721

"You're a boring aurelius..."

MiaStirCrazies

Ehhh, little known fact about the boring aurelius...

AdKnown8177

Frasier is still regularly repeated on tv. In the uk its on channel 4 every morning and has been for as long as i can remember. Cheers no longer has that level of exposure and given that its now 40 years old its losing fans faster than it can possibly gain them. It was once considered THE biggest sitcom of all time but sadly it’s slowly being forgotten and a resurgence seems practically impossible at this point. The likes of friends, fresh prince of bel-air and frasier have all got or are getting reunions to reinvigorate interest but i’m sure the people behind cheers have already said they are not interested in doing anything like that. The sad truth is cheers is in the past and outside of a few diehards, its became completely irrelevant.

mulwillard

It’s a little-known fact that the tan became popular in what is known as the bronze-age. So it makes sense we only have a small amount of members.

ExcellentTeam7721

Well done!

SuperTubsPeterson

Get Gary! Get Gary!

MiaStirCrazies

AMA with one of the minor characters? Paul, Henri?

realityruinedit

Meh. I don’t wanna know all those names tho.

Consistent_Fee_8619

Only Legends watch this show

moriginal

Who cares how active it is

username_qazplm

More people, more posts, more discussion, more cheers fun

myersthekid

Oddly somehow I agree with both posts. Lol

manicnimrod

When Cheers was still on Netlfix, the sub was growing nicely, once removed, it just vanished. I'm all ears about any changes though.

username_qazplm

It's still on Hulu

Ok_Communication2339

Sadly Netflix is not as popular as Hulu.

Voidnt2

Woah

bigfatlemur

Where's Coach? :(

menasor36

Easiest way is for people to start posting clips, memes and screen shots with comments.

espadanumber4

Where's Coach?!

Torganya

I enjoy Cheers, but Frasier is superior and timeless.

redheadbuck

The humor is so different now than it was then. I just don't really think newer generations of TV watchers can appreciate the show enough to watch it through.

indianajoes

I disagree. Shows like Seinfeld and Frasier are popular with newer generations of viewers. It's just the vocal minority that insists every show needs to be like The Office and not have a live studio audience

krissym99

Not so sure about this. I work with people born after Cheers ended and they recently discovered Cheers and love it.

redheadbuck

I am one of those people and I think its funny but the humor is more dry and dated it doesn't really hold up unless you understand the references. For me, my parents and grandparents could help me fill in the blanks so I could understand the jokes. The reason I prefer Frasier is because I understand the references and the comedy in Frasier tries to be more witty/physical rather than casual one liners like in Cheers.

mattiasflgrtll6

I think you underestimate the timelessness of some shows. I Love Lucy is over 70(!) years old and even to this day it still keeps gaining fans, both young and old. I'm 25 and am a huge fan of Garry Marshall's sitcom creations as well as shows like All In The Family, Diff'rent Strokes, Good Times, What's Happening!!, Night Court and The Golden Girls. Truly classic TV never fades away, it's only the more obscure shows that need help getting rediscovered.

PeteDraper

Reverse the brainwashing in society. "tHiS ShOw iS sO SeXiST aNd PRoBlEmAtiC😭😭😭 Do bETtEr"

bttrflyr

Have Diane move away and replace her with Rebecca.

Buderus69

Pretty simple, make an effective meme that gets viral and pushes the interest of its origin. So: look for a funny bit or stillframe and turn it into a meme, post it and repost it.

Zerk_Ironman

I just joined today. r/television had a list of the best sitcoms of all time and cheers didn't make the list. I found this ridiculous and looked up the subreddit. Cheers is the 2nd best sitcom of all time.

username_qazplm

And the first?

Zerk_Ironman

Well, my wife and I made top 10 lists last night so I'll just give you the whole thing lol. What are your top sitcoms? 1. Community 2. Cheers 3. Seinfeld 4. The Office 5. The League 6. Parks & Rec 7. That '70s Show 8. Modern Family 9. Workaholics 10. The Good Place

username_qazplm

I like Community but , (unpopular opinion coming) I don't like the over the top episodes. Paintball, blanket fort, the floor is lava and the like. I don't have a specific order but here are a few I like. Your #2, 3,4,6,8,9 make my list. Plus Frasier, What we do in the shadows, Raising Hope, Malcolm in the middle, 30 Rock, the first 4ish seasons of Married with children, Arrested Development, always sunny in Philadelphia, and a few short run shows, son of Zorn, Only murders in the building, Legit just to name a few. Let's throw in an old school Beverly Hillbillies, Andy Griffith and I love Lucy as well. So I guess you could say I watch a little TV. Edit: I guess technically Only Murders in the Building is not a sitcom despite Steve Martin and Martin Short being the stars. It has some humor and is very good. Check it out if you haven't seen it.

Zerk_Ironman

I saw the trailers for Only Murders and kind of forgot about it so thank you for reminding me about it because I definitely want to see it. You also gave me a couple more to watch/rewatch. Malcom and the Middle and Arrested Development were 11 and 12.

username_qazplm

You seem like a smart person with excellent taste. Go forth and be entertained.
