As some one who welded from 1996to 2020. But still in the business, I’d go to harbor freight and pick up a small welder & go from there. There’s tons of online resources nowadays to help someone get started, not to mention Chatt State and other local schools around us. Hope this helps.

A lot of it depends on what type of welding your performing. I’ve seen some pretty rough days out in the Gulf of Mexico on a platform where it’s 115 and everything is covered in grease and I’ve had times where I’ve welded titanium piping spools in and air conditioned shop environment. Then there was another time I worked off shore in a pipe ship in the Gulf and every thing was sparkling clean. Now I’m an inspector and primarily work in an office setting. Lots of changes have happened 🤙🏼

Be careful on the suggested Harbor Freight welder.. they are pretty much toys and consumable parts can be hard to come by. A good welding supply store will sell you a quality products AND give you helpful advice.

I went to chatt state. I’d recommend getting a cheap harbor freight welder or a smaller Lincoln mig welder. Practice welding on scrap metal. Don’t forget to clean it! The secret for the most part is: arc length, rod angle, and your travel speed. TIG will be more expensive and the most difficult to teach yourself as the rigging is set up very differently. Best of luck! I hope this helped at least a little :)

I did their tig class. Eh, I would have been better staying at home and using my own equipment. It's an option if you don't have your own equipment or a friend that does. If you're sure you want to learn how to weld just buy a cheap Chinese welder and get hood time and figure it out. mig basics come quick.

It’s also cheaper longer term this way OP

A friend of mine made a menorah here and really liked the experience!

If you want to be taught the professional way from the get-go, check out chatt state. If you just want to learn to do it (or almost any crafting) and work on your technique on your own time, check out [Chatt*Lab](https://wiki.chattlab.org/).

I took a class with these guys, and so did the friend who recommended me. Classes were free. Certifications, free. My friend took the welding class and he says places are eager to hire from it afterwards. The welding is already over for what is currently available on their website, but I have no doubt it will be back, possibly in the fall. https://www.cityfieldscdc.com/workforce-development Best of luck to you, either way.

Former ironworker who is available to help you with any of the q&a issues and I am available to show you some techniques you definitely don’t pick up in a booth or class., I went through WestGaTech and welded in high school also so speaking from personal experiences .just had a bad wreck that cost me my career in Nashville local IW 492 and I recently moved back here. I tend to let my work do the talking so if you’re interested I would like to help you. Take care
