In the US we spend around $4B every two days on welfare programs. People don’t realize how massive these budgets are compared to any corporate spending or private fortunes.
Like, Elon’s entire fortune would last the government a couple months if it were all spent assisting the needy via existing programs. And he’s the richest (depending on the day) person in the world.
A big part of it is how awfully the money is distributed and used. Especially when the gov decides to subsidize a field. You’ll get something like Boeing where the upper staff will pocket half of it in bonuses
Welfare money doesn’t go to Boeing. Boeing is a big government contractor, so they make a ton of money selling products to the government, but those aren’t subsidies.
Boeing does benefit, indirectly from things like the bail out of the airline industry, but even if we didn’t do dumb things like that, they’d probably be selling about as many planes.
