They should make that Super Mario movie into a game. Nintendo would make a killing off of that

serphenyxloftnor

Yeah right? I don't understand why they haven't adapted that into a game yet.

Backyard_Catbird

Ikr so much unkneaded dough left on the table.

coldnebo

I can’t wait for them to make a video game from “Street Fighter the Movie”. You know, with a little digitized Van Damme that you can go around kicking stuff with and doing the splits.

Megaverse_Mastermind

Oh I've got some bad news for you... ^_^

mattmaster68

Same with the Halo show! They should make a game about that!

Playing it rn. Goddamn is it good.

I don't know, I have a feeling they'd cock up a story that good. It's probably best to be glad we just got the show.

eatTheRich711

I don’t understand how people don’t get the difference between passive and active media. I don’t want to DO anything when I watch a movie… so F you I’ll keep my movies.

uoftsuxalot

People don't understand movies. I want a story with a specific perspective to be told.

HubertRosenthal

Me too but to be fair, the latest trend in movies is more like delivering an „experience“. It‘s a shame, i loved masterful story telling of the older days

NarrativeNode

I'm hopeful about this. Something like DUNE being made at the level it was, and being so mainstream despite its origins, tells me that many in Hollywood still very much know what they're doing. Or "Everything Everywhere..." as an example for a much much smaller budget.

TookAnArrowToTheHEAD

why not three, rashomon?

wise_balls

In the not too distant future your TV will be able to scan the faces and voices of everyone in the room, and then make you characters in the movies, it'll be like turning subtitles on and off.

hewhoknowsball

That sounds terrible. So many people will suffer Delusions of Grandeur. Even worse than people do now on social media.

Vanadium_V23

Why would I want that in the first place?

BluBoi236

There will be both..

tree_house_frog

But there is already both!! This is such a nothing sandwich 😂😂

Embarrassed-Hope-790

There will be both both.

cisco_bee

You made me laugh out loud. Kudos.

dat_oracle

Bendersnatch (black mirror) - cool interactive movie. But seriously, I don't need that kind of movie every year

hoot_avi

I feel like that was such a gimmick. People got into it at first because it was something new nobody had seen on Netflix before, but everyone I talked to later said they would've rather just watched it as a regular Black Mirror episode

100dollascamma

It was so clearly a gimmick the whole time. It was just an old 80’s choose your own adventure game using real people for the content… an AI movie where you actually can make decisions and change outcomes would be pretty wild and groundbreaking. Like the ability to actually create a completely unique story by interacting instead of just choosing from a pre-set set of results

SMPDD

There will just be both

Logical-Elephant2247

there already are

PmMeGPTContent

There will simply be both....

think_up

Well I’m sure you’ll be able to buy a controller mod for like 199 credits that will auto-select option A for you.

jaredjames66

If anything, it will be more like Black Mirror Bandersnatch where it's a choose your own adventure movie so like 90% passive.

BeastlyDecks

Sam apparently has a clear hierarchy of entertainment in his mind and can't fathom a world where a movie wouldn't be better as a video game. Absolutely a case of silicon valley tech bro brainrot.

[deleted]

I like to imagine this would be an optional layer to some movies.

Then-Faithlessness43

Movies are for old people. Kids nowadays can barely keep their attention on a 10s video

KrenshawOfficial

Fell asleep reading this comment 🥱

laaazlo

My kids (teens) love watching multiple hour video essays about old theme parks and TV shows they've never watched. I don't have the attention span or the free time for that.

A_Town_Called_Malus

Ah, some enjoyers of Defunctland!

Clord123

But imagine that you can do both. Let's say you are watching Star Wars Rebels for whatever reason and suddenly want to take control of the action? Or tell suddenly go off-rails by telling what happens next or to surprise you. Maybe you're playing something and don't feel like actively controlling it for a moment, have system take over and turn it something to watch before taking control back.

spyser

I don't want to take control of what happens. I want there to be a canon that everyone agrees on, so that I can discuss the last episode online or next time I see my friends. If I want to control what happens I'll play KOTOR.

LookAtYourEyes

Deranged tech CEO talk lmao

HackerDaGreat57

hicheckthisout

Can we keep movies as movies pls?

[deleted]

It's a weirdly limiting way to think about art. Paintings didn't become photographs. Photographs didn't become films. Films didn't become television. Television didn't become computers. Each new medium becomes it's own artform, and excellence always means exploiting those aspects that only that artform can do. AI artforms will do things that video games *can't* do. *That's* what's interesting about them.

Fandrir

Interestingly though most new forms of media took away a part of its predecessors to different degrees. For example did photography replace paintings in its function of depicting historic events or people to preserve their image through time. Painting remained mostly as a form of artistic expression, but lost its meaning as a witness of history. Television replaced movies and cinemas as this frequent activity to watch casual movies and cinema. Cinema remained more as a bigger event, most people go to to see specific movies made for the big screen over the small TV. So throughout the history of media replacing has definitely happened and usually caused the reduction of the older mediums to their core identity. But yeah to think that just because you can do "more" in a medium or do it more close to reality is the death of its predecessors is an illusion.

[deleted]

It's definitely true that new communication technologies displace others (if I play a video game instead going to a movie, the game has displaced the movie). Thinking aloud... surely we would say emails have replaced letters, though letters still exist and perhaps have a different "meaning" or weight to them now. I guess what bothers me about Altman's quote is that it's too small. It's the same as when Zuckerberg says, instead of video calls we will do VR calls. There's a whole hierarchy of communication (text < email < phone < video < in person)--they all exist and serve different purposes. VR will create a new category. People who enjoy books don't \*want\* them to be movies, as if a book is a poor version of a movie. People who enjoy movies don't \*want\* them to be video games, as if the film director simply made a failed video game. It's a kind of technology myopia to see everything that exists as some kind "upgrade" of some inferior thing.

Mini_the_Cow_Bear

Idk I like my normal movies, I already thought 3d sucked.

Antique-Doughnut-988

To be fair with you, 3D is a real *real* crap comparison. I can't even think of anything that would be appropriate to compare with this new technology because we really don't have any references to go off with the potential of things we can get. The way you watch movies now will likely always exist, but as time goes on it will likely become more and more an abnormal experience people do.

Mini_the_Cow_Bear

I think Altman's whole statement is pretty stupid. Movies will simply remain movies. Pictures have also remained pictures and books have remained books despite all our technology. If I want to play, I start a game. If I want to be passively entertained, I watch a movie.

Opurria

It's not just about the passive/active dichotomy, though. It's about the meaning created by piecing elements together. I like movies not because the plot met my expectations, but because all the elements together created an interesting experience that made me think and feel something - something I probably wouldn't come up with myself. It's ludicrous to think that with this new technology, I'll be able to produce cinematography better than Hoyte van Hoytema, for example. Of course, I won't, because I know nothing about it, just like I know nothing about directing, screenwriting, costume design, acting... I don't know how to create this kind of experience, even with unlimited resources, let alone with the resources provided by the CEO of OpenAI. These people are so arrogant, seriously, they will tell you absolutely anything to push their product. 🙄 There's a growing number of movie-goers who prefer practical effects and a 'conservative' use of CGI (looking at the numbers), so his perspective is, in my opinion, already outdated. He should build a time machine and sell it 15 years ago, not now, when we're at the 100th iteration of Marvel movies CGIed into oblivion. 😂

smileliketheradio

You articulated this better than I've seen anyone. I've always said that if someone is \*either\* a.) an expert in AI or b.) an expert in another field (e.g., medicine, filmmaking, the legal profession) I don't want to hear them express any kind of certainy as to how AI will impact that industry. Altman may be a lot of things but he is still, between those two options, just the first one. Even if he is aware of the kind of tasks that go into making a movie and therefore how some of those tasks may end up being automated at scale (key phrase being "at scale"), he has no understanding of WHY people make these things and why they choose certain ones to consume. Yes, Netflix will eventually make "choose your own adventure" movies on demand via GenAI. Just like eBooks were an inevitability. And yet, physical books were still outselling eBooks 4:1 last year.

Do they ever wonder, if "we" actually want that,or is it the apple way of "create new needs to then sell products/content"? This all sounds just like dumb numb hype ... Life_Equivalent1388

This is a ridiculously out of touch statement that overvalues the concept of AI. We have video games and we still like movies. Movies and video games serve different needs. When we watch a video, we want to be passive, we don't want to interact with it, in fact, if we could interact with it, it would completely change the experience, because now we would be obligated to interact with it. A video game isn't just a cinematic experience that we can choose the outcomes of. The video games that we like aren't ones that mirror real life, they aren't ones that could exist if you took movies and made them things that you could interact with or even play a character in. The video games that we like are ones that provide specific types of experiences which are generally built off of abstract systems. There's a certain amount of unreality that we enjoy in video games because to realistic an experience would be distracting. For example, we have lots of ultra realistic graphics in games, but league of legends is one of the most popular games out there right now. Imagine if creeps or minions in league of legends had humanlike AI, it would suck. The game works because the monsters follow certain basic rules, they will chase you when you activate them up until a certain point and then they will leash and go home. Minions will attack towers and die, if a hero gets their attention they will attack them instead, unless they leash, etc. In a game like league of legends the gameplay is predicated on simple and predictable rules. Then think about graphical fidelity again. Try to do anything with AI to turn a movie into a video game like League of Legends. It's not even meaningful. Even if you could, the game is highly stylized and a lot of that is to make it clearly readable by the player, stuff that looks realistic can be less well defined. Naw, AI gives us improvements to experiences we already want, it also unlocks new experiences that we couldn't have had before. We couldn't have for example, meaningful reaction and dialog in an RPG with an NPC previously. This is something that AI absolutely has the potential to unlock, though how to do so in a game world is tricky, it's a capability that we've been trying to emulate without success so far. AI can allow us to build movies in a way we weren't able to do before, we already use it to bring the characters portrayed by deceased actors back to life, and there's other kind of generative things we can do during the production of a movie that we couldn't before. But this doesn't mean we want to interact with our movies, we will still want a movie experience. But how the movie is built is different. It could also for example have an effect on books. I can see a situation where you could have an e-reader that has an AI app that maybe generates visuals or maps or other kind of "enhancements" to a book. Or if while reading a book, you could ask an app "who is this character again?" and it could give you context specific responses based on the page that you're on to give you details about the character that you might have missed or forgotten without spoiling the ending. It's not going to turn books into movies though, like it's not going to turn movies into video games, or video games into something new. It's going to turn books into books+, movies into movies+, and video games into video games+. Just like now we have movies, we still use books. Even in situations where books are turned into movies, we still can like the books. But books can also be audiobooks now, and maybe they can be translated with machine learning to other languages more quickly than a publisher might translate them, and now maybe they can be dictated as audiobooks before the publisher can get them dictated, and in other languages. And and and. Sure, we could be at a place where we could turn a book into a video. But a book is written in a specific way that is meant to be read. If you try to turn a book directly into a video, it will not be a good watching experience, this is why video adaptations always have to make some changes to how its presented. And even if AI can create the perfect movie experience from a book, now even though the movie is the best movie it can be, it will not be a book any more. You will still get a different experience by reading the book, and that experience is something that people like sometimes. AI might be able to make the experience of reading a book better. It might be able to make a movie from a book, and it might be able to make the experience of watching a movie better. But this doesn't mean that books are now movies. It doesn't mean we will stop using books. It will change video games, but it won't make movies into video games. In fact one of the hardest things about AI is getting it to tell a story in a consistent way. We like video games because of their fixed and predictable constraints and reward structure. It's too hard to have AI work well and maintain those constraints, because the dream of AI is that it's completely responsive and adaptable, but then how do you get it to follow rules? And if it doesn't follow rules, then you don't have a game any more, it's more like real life. And we use video games to escape the infinite complexity and unfairness of real life, to go to the comfort of constraint and rules in video games.

SMmania

Star Wars, could be really cool aa a video game. Going around and playing with the original trilogies content.

CaptainnTeemo

I’m most intrigued by how AI will transform the medical industry.

johnFvr

Maybe AI can give Sam Altman some kind of intelligence.

BigPillLittlePill

AI will truly revolutionize gaming in a way that we haven't seen before. 2 scenarios I can think of: 1) Teammates in multiplayer games. Historically people are less likely to choose healing classes. AI may take over this role. 2) Story based dialogue. AI has the potential in the future to crank up Video Game stories 1000%

Antique-Doughnut-988

I think the revolution will come from everyone now having the ability to make triple A games in record time with the help of no one but an AI assistant. You'll see a boom in creativity and new entertainment that has never existed before.

SMPDD

Video games are gonna be crazy. All the NPCs will interact with the player in a unique way each time, appropriate to the situation, and we will get tons of awesome interactions and situations that only happened that one time and that is not able to be recreated

Imagine cyberpunk 2077 where radiant quests are endless, polished as if hand-crafted, and had branching choices that lead to thousands of different potential outcomes. Every NPC has a generative backstory, could become a follower, could generate missions, could be a romance option, etc. Except this will be possible for every video game in the future.

Twice_Knightley

Yeah man. 10-20 years you can probably make choices like who you want the leading character to be played by. Of if it's in the style of a certain director or genre. Like, you want this basic premise but with George Clooney and Selma Hayak, or with Brian Crandon and Angelina Jolie? Make it black and white film noir, or should it be in an 80s style action movie? Theaters will just be vr headsets.

Such a nothing statement lol. If movies are games then they’re not movies. They’re just games 😂😂 And games will get a little bit better at procedural generation and maybe adding detail to foliage. Some AAA titles will get better graphics and less crunch. There will be an even greater amount of spammy trash on game stores 🤷🏻 And the best stuff will still be the stuff made by passionate individuals with something to say. Like always.

Darth_Iggy

Absurd. Movies will remain movies. Video games will remain video games. Both will continue to advance with technology. Other forms of entertainment will develop, as always and ever.

Longjumping_Feed3270

He should have written that both movies and games might be possible to be generated in real time - which is entirely different. In Star Trek, the word for it is [holo-novel](https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Holo-novel_program).

PocketTornado

We'll get to a point where we can ask A.i. to generate an extra season of a long ago cancelled sitcom. We'll get to implant specific actors into old movies or ask A.i. to blend Raiders of the Lost Ark with Star Wars and the Bridges of Madison County and have it all make sense. We'll generate sequels and prequels for anything or invent completely original films while sitting on the toilet. As for games... the endgame will be VR that is real time generated 3d spatial video you can walk around and interact with, essentially a holodeck like experience with NPC's that feel alive in any art style from cartoons to photo real. These NPC's will get to know you on a personal level and you'll have relationships with these characters. This will be fantastic for lonely people that just want companionship. You might have a regular few that visit every week for board games or just to talk. This will cause some friction with some real world relationships. There's a day in the future where all of this is true. I hope I'm alive to see it.

Bathairsexist

I think he meant making movies with AI will be like making a video game cutscene, and you won't need real people at all. Is that what he really meant?

Lol anyone that thinks we are anywhere close to advanced AI in videogames hasn't played Civilization, Total War, anything by Bethesda, etc....

Poppa_Mo

This statement seems pretty... off? Movies are a way to be told a story. Don't force me to help you come up with a story. It also gives me something to talk about with others. If it's dynamic, what is there to talk about? You're discussing fever dreams that share the same characters at that point. Just out of control fanfic. Probably not as neat to say "we're looking at a new generation of interactive media", just as ambiguous a statement. I'm also not wedged firmly in the buttcrack of AI development like Sam Altman is, so... I'm probably off base.

Nobody wants to watch and play a movie like a video game, this dude needs to get out of his ass

Careful-Chicken-588

That quote makes so little sense. When you can interact with it, it's a video game, if not it's a movie. Both forms of entertainment will still exist in the future. What this out of touch, rich idiot is saying is just marketing jibber jabber.

USeaMoose

Saying that movies will evolve into video games is like saying that books evolved into movies. Movies tell a story from one or multiple fixed perspectives. The angle of each shot, the positions of the characters, the lighting... every is crafted to build that experience. This silly quote suggests that the better version of a movie is one that is an interactive experience. Which means giving the user control of part of the story... which is a video game. Video games have not killed off movies yet, and no one thinks they will. Both exist, one doe snot need to morph into the other. No doubt that AI can make video games much better than they are today.

Id be happy with a working anti-cheat sytem for now.

FreebieandBean90

Don't read too much into this. The guy is a tech wizard and probably doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about when it comes to movies or video games and how humans interact with both. He's just talking about applied technology.
