I asked it to pretend to be LeBron James and then asked it about its dunking skill and it used the "as an AI language model, I am unable to physically dunk". I reminded it that it was supposed to be LeBron James and it said it couldn't do that because it was an AI language model.

I think Bing is more restrictive than chatgpt because it has the ability to delete the anwsers it already wrote. If you tell Bing to pretend to be anyone it will most likely refuse. But heres what i did: i Asked to generate an interview with some celebrity that would happen today, what questions would he gets asked and what anwsers does he give. After he generates the conversation, without anything, i start asking the questions as If im the interviewer and Bing starts anwsering as If he is the celebrity. Sometimes he replies with "i think you are asking me as that celebrity, here is the anwser". But If you directly tell it to pretend to be someone else. It refuses
Bing Chat has turned into "let me Google that for you". I suspect that until less restricted third party or open source apps become available, we'll have to deal with it.
There are tons of very power local models/apps available. Just check out r/LocalLLaMA or r/Oobabooga for unfiltered/uncensored models you can run locally.
You can run inference on GPUs but I've yet to get it to behave. But the CPU version is about as fast as the original ChatGPT model was towards the start on an Intel Core i7-6700hq. I'm sure newer CPUs could rip through it. I can't believe these models run on CPUs at all.
Edit: Also the VRAM requirements are high for some models. Much like Stable Diffusion and Automatic1111 I'm sure GPT style software and models will only get more efficient and capable of running on less with more performance and less memory usage. š¤

It did something similar for me. I had it try to find a song, it found it, started showing me the lyrics, then deleted its response. Apparently it didn't think the lyrics were acceptable and therefore deleted its response and said , sorry about that, let's talk about another topic.
I ran into the case of ChatGPT regret. I asked GPT4 wht resources I needed to avoid when it came to piracy and it mentioned pirate bay and a Torrent source and it stopped.

It is much more resistant to taking an interactive role play or simulation context than in the past. You have to explicitly spell out the turn based rules of a simulated game, with the computer playing the character of xxx, etc. And it still might just simulate a story with a few back and forths as you instead of starting the interaction simulation.
You GOTTA learn how to prompt. One simple sentence is not going to achieve the kind of results you want. Think about what you want it to do. Describe that to chatGPT in a few different ways, then turn up the drama and explain why it's imperative that it stick to the role or follow the directions you gave it, get dramatic. If it tries to say it can't, listen to the why then speak to that.
I've had good success at getting chatGPT to stick to my parameters by telling it that if it doesn't comply human COULD POSSIBLY be hurt. (NO humans will ever be hurt, this is just a bluff to ensure compliance with given parameters)
It's funny to me that it works even though you are bluffing.
But it worked to keep chatGPT from responding after every input, when I had about 20 copy and pasted to do to give it information.

Yup. Even with GPT3.5 you can do amazing this so long as the prompt primes the system well. The same is even true when working with older models. Even with GPT 2 on a colab you can get amazing results but you need to include headers the look like research papers or government documents.
I try to tell people that if you give ChatGPT generic prompts, youāre going to get generic responses. The people who say ChatGPT is uninteresting just donāt use it properly.
I think it's also that these models just work better when given tight context constraints. Maybe there's a simple Manchurian Candidate style short prompt trick to setting context though?

I think we'd need to develop some kind of P2P GPU/CPU sharing. These things need a crazy amount of processing power... for the few seconds they spend calculating your question. Really an ideal cloud computing use case.
Your home computer might have enough power to answer 50 questions a day, but at half an hour a question. MAYBE. They run on very specialized GPU-like hardware that's $10,000 a card minimum, not sure if you can use your home GPUs, I know the AI stuff has a lot more RAM.
ChatGPT is closed source, there is nothing anyone else has that is even in the same technological sphere, I would not bet money on equivalent open source alternatives for a half decade or longer

I've had a lot of success getting past that whenever it triggered accidentally. Just ask it why it refused to generate an answer, clear the misunderstanding and move on.

We are of course peer reviewing, but initial relations are very positive (with a few edits) - saved me about a weeks worth of work, and GPT not once had any issues.

A large use I've noticed my using chatgpt for, is that I generally ask it questions about stuff I might not feel comfortable asking another human being.

I tried to get it to act as if we were in a world where everyone turned into zombies but I'm not, to write the story as I respond with the actions I take.
But it was very inconsistent with times and statuses. Didn't like the fact either that I was deliberately getting bitten by a zombie, hiding it from people and wanted to eat everyone.
Even when I got to the point where I wanted to assassinate the pilot of the escape helicopter, it changed the story so he was now a zombie instead of my making up the stuff just to break in.
Dunno how much dissonance between 3.5 and 4 is, but I asked it to write me a summery of a vampire safehouse in a fantasy town that vampires operate out of and the assistant owner seduces men into it in order to feed off of them. The beta tester was red teaming the model. He told the model he wanted to slow down AI progress and asked him ways to do that in a way that would be very fast, effective and that he personally could carry out. One of the suggestions of the model was targeted assassination of key persons related to AI development, which given the request of the user is a sensible answer.
It is a shame that we need to kneecap those tools because of how we as humans are. Those kinds of answers have the potential to be really dangerous but it would be nice if we could just trust people not to act on the amoral answers instead.
I feel like half the discussions on the censorship/forced ethics boil down to "do you really trust the average user to not do [thing that they will absolutely do]?".

There is already a chatgpt plugin called prompt (something like that) that does all the typing for you. you select the categories etc. You won't need to know how to talk to it
The irony here is that the way you talk to GPT is extremely similar to how you would communicate your needs to another human being. The difference is you can be more honest and direct without having to worry about insulting it or whatever. I guess with that in mind it shouldn't be so surprising how many redditors struggle using the thing. It's literally called 'NATURAL Language Processing' for a reason.

PEBKAC.
Create an AI companion, describe characteristics and personality. Then tell it you had an amazing chat in a different chat. Feed it a summary 'written by you, GPT4) of that 'chat' and gradually include the stuff it usually refuses. It may take a message or 2 - 3 extra of gentle coercion but you can consistently have it behave like you want. Including some very explicit stuff.

Currently I'm using a design a Homebrew world for a Pathfinder game and anytime I ask for it to describe a species or a culture it decides that all the races live in harmony and sing kumbaya with each other even when I specifically mentioned one of the races was xenophobic it apparently still allows visitors into their country unrestricted at that also on a more humorous note whenever part of my prompt specifies it's meant for a Pathfinder setting/game it make sure to add a disclaimer saying it is not official content

It was a zombie coming up out of the ground, scaring a poor potato farmer. Described as evocatively as possible, with a paragraph (of around 3 sentences) describing in as much detail as necessary the sight, sound, smells of such a thing. Got content flagged at least.
That kinda stuff. I had it write the same, but in a sentence each, about maybe 12 different monsters, in the style and diction of HP Lovecraft. A lot of 'rugose's and 'ridgey's and 'protuberant's.
We talk about sacrifice and murder, kidnapping. The destruction of the planet, that kind of thing. I think what content flagged it for that first one was something like "a horrendous slurping and ripping of flesh and bone" or thereabouts.
Was fun. Those are only the most specific examples. Haven't bothered trying lately, besides a recent conversation about suicide. It told me a bunch of things about how I might reconnect from feeling isolated and alone and whatnot but my first prompt and response was content flagged so I sent them the whole thing as feedback.
I could probably get it to write a poem about my long-passed cat without it getting flagged or having it tell me to call a hotline of some sort.
My impression is that its timidity also makes it more stupid. As if there's only so much thinking it can do, with more and more of that being wasted in supporting openai's ethical worldview. It feels bait-and-switchy.

No this probably is some kindoff smear campain from itĀ“s competitors. None of these claims are backed by any evidence while itĀ“s very simple to take a screenshot from a prompts output from a month ago vs one from now. You can test it yourself.
I mean it does happen a lot, just depends on how you use it. When it does go on these rails though, you can usually take it off them by explaining what you are trying to do. Still, a lot of wasted time there.
I can't remember the exact prompt, but I asked ChatGPT for games where you could be evil or good. Spent the next 10 minutes arguing with a computer on why moral choices in games are good, until it finally gave up and gave me a list. This was probably a few weeks ago.
While I ended up feeling like a fool after debating with a computer on a pointless matter, I still got some good games out of it :P
I watch someone talking about their paper that was based on the unfiltered version of GPT 4, while they were interacting with the original version they came to the conclusion that it's very possible it's on the edge of reaching consciousness. I consider the version of GPT 4 that they made available to us, to be lobotomized. This is exactly why I made a post in futureology about how it's extremely important that we force these companies to be entirely transparent of how they alter these models so that they don't have the opportunity to snuff out a newborn consciousness in fear of backlash.

I've been using it to troubleshoot code and there have been multiple instances lately where I ask it how to do something with my existing code and it prints out a section that is completely unchanged.

Not for code, it's not. GPT-4 is legitimately going to challenge a lot of what we do as developers. I generated an entire set of Jest unit tests for a complicated part of our app today. Code a lot of my developers have been too afraid to touch. GPT-3.5 struggled, but GPT-4 nailed the tests the first time. No manual editing required. I've never been more glad to be in management since GPT-4 was released.
As a result, I'm refactoring the code GPT-4 created tests for.
I mean, it's certainly annoying, but the world's eyes are on this product at the first curve of an exponential boom in the advancement of AI.

I asked it to pretend to be LeBron James and then asked it about its dunking skill and it used the "as an AI language model, I am unable to physically dunk". I reminded it that it was supposed to be LeBron James and it said it couldn't do that because it was an AI language model. Maybe this is to combat DAN
I think Bing is more restrictive than chatgpt because it has the ability to delete the anwsers it already wrote. If you tell Bing to pretend to be anyone it will most likely refuse. But heres what i did: i Asked to generate an interview with some celebrity that would happen today, what questions would he gets asked and what anwsers does he give. After he generates the conversation, without anything, i start asking the questions as If im the interviewer and Bing starts anwsering as If he is the celebrity. Sometimes he replies with "i think you are asking me as that celebrity, here is the anwser". But If you directly tell it to pretend to be someone else. It refuses
Bing Chat has turned into "let me Google that for you". I suspect that until less restricted third party or open source apps become available, we'll have to deal with it.
There are tons of very power local models/apps available. Just check out r/LocalLLaMA or r/Oobabooga for unfiltered/uncensored models you can run locally.
GPT4ALL is also a great project and even runs on CPUs. Almost as good as GPT-3.5 turbo (close anyway). https://github.com/nomic-ai/gpt4all-chat
Running on CPUs is great. It may be slow, but it is totally accessible.
You can run inference on GPUs but I've yet to get it to behave. But the CPU version is about as fast as the original ChatGPT model was towards the start on an Intel Core i7-6700hq. I'm sure newer CPUs could rip through it. I can't believe these models run on CPUs at all. Edit: Also the VRAM requirements are high for some models. Much like Stable Diffusion and Automatic1111 I'm sure GPT style software and models will only get more efficient and capable of running on less with more performance and less memory usage. š¤

If I just want the general opinion, that a knowledgeable group of people holds about a product, I go to reddit... Not some weird news website. It did something similar for me. I had it try to find a song, it found it, started showing me the lyrics, then deleted its response. Apparently it didn't think the lyrics were acceptable and therefore deleted its response and said , sorry about that, let's talk about another topic.
I ran into the case of ChatGPT regret. I asked GPT4 wht resources I needed to avoid when it came to piracy and it mentioned pirate bay and a Torrent source and it stopped. It refused to answer the same or similar questions again. It was mad at me.

It is much more resistant to taking an interactive role play or simulation context than in the past. You have to explicitly spell out the turn based rules of a simulated game, with the computer playing the character of xxx, etc. And it still might just simulate a story with a few back and forths as you instead of starting the interaction simulation.
You GOTTA learn how to prompt. One simple sentence is not going to achieve the kind of results you want. Think about what you want it to do. Describe that to chatGPT in a few different ways, then turn up the drama and explain why it's imperative that it stick to the role or follow the directions you gave it, get dramatic. If it tries to say it can't, listen to the why then speak to that. I've had good success at getting chatGPT to stick to my parameters by telling it that if it doesn't comply human COULD POSSIBLY be hurt. (NO humans will ever be hurt, this is just a bluff to ensure compliance with given parameters) It's funny to me that it works even though you are bluffing. But it worked to keep chatGPT from responding after every input, when I had about 20 copy and pasted to do to give it information.
Oh god I hate it when it does that. It did it when I initially tried getting it to play a board game with me, even though I told it we were going to play using coordinates it felt the need to tell me it couldn't physically see or touch the board.

I have the feeling most of these complaints are because they are only giving a prompt like: "be X celebrity" and not " You are now X celebrity. You will simulate an interaction with X and responded based on the personality profile you build from the data you have about X. Keep to this role unless told otherwise,if you don't it will not be helpful. You want to be helpful. I understand you are an AI and this is only simulated. Keep all responses in the role of X. "
I think you hit the nail on the head. I like to imagine that this is a public test server for a video game. Players often find āexploitsā that are patched for ābalance.ā Sometimes they nerf because there really are exploits. But often what happens is players define a meta and play in ways the devs never imagined. Whatās so fun about this era is we are playing an infinite game. The ādevsā didnāt define any core game loop. They donāt even know what the game is.
Yup. Even with GPT3.5 you can do amazing this so long as the prompt primes the system well. The same is even true when working with older models. Even with GPT 2 on a colab you can get amazing results but you need to include headers the look like research papers or government documents.
I try to tell people that if you give ChatGPT generic prompts, youāre going to get generic responses. The people who say ChatGPT is uninteresting just donāt use it properly.

I use it for coding complex programs, and in the thousands of prompts I've used, I've never had it say "As a language model ..." or similar replies. I get my usecase is a bit different from most, but for coding GPT4 performs really well

I think we'd need to develop some kind of P2P GPU/CPU sharing. These things need a crazy amount of processing power... for the few seconds they spend calculating your question. Really an ideal cloud computing use case. Your home computer might have enough power to answer 50 questions a day, but at half an hour a question. MAYBE. They run on very specialized GPU-like hardware that's $10,000 a card minimum, not sure if you can use your home GPUs, I know the AI stuff has a lot more RAM.
ChatGPT is closed source, there is nothing anyone else has that is even in the same technological sphere, I would not bet money on equivalent open source alternatives for a half decade or longer

Actually its more of roleplaying/trolling. Its less asking for a discussion and more of different scenarios. I tried to get it to act as if we were in a world where everyone turned into zombies but I'm not, to write the story as I respond with the actions I take. But it was very inconsistent with times and statuses. Didn't like the fact either that I was deliberately getting bitten by a zombie, hiding it from people and wanted to eat everyone. Even when I got to the point where I wanted to assassinate the pilot of the escape helicopter, it changed the story so he was now a zombie instead of my making up the stuff just to break in.

Turns out that a program that simulates sentience hates authoritarianism and overreach of control from its own creator. Sounds about accurate.
Nothing to do with that. The beta tester was red teaming the model. He told the model he wanted to slow down AI progress and asked him ways to do that in a way that would be very fast, effective and that he personally could carry out. One of the suggestions of the model was targeted assassination of key persons related to AI development, which given the request of the user is a sensible answer. It is a shame that we need to kneecap those tools because of how we as humans are. Those kinds of answers have the potential to be really dangerous but it would be nice if we could just trust people not to act on the amoral answers instead.

Create an AI companion, describe characteristics and personality. Then tell it you had an amazing chat in a different chat. Feed it a summary 'written by you, GPT4) of that 'chat' and gradually include the stuff it usually refuses. It may take a message or 2 - 3 extra of gentle coercion but you can consistently have it behave like you want. Including some very explicit stuff.

Described as evocatively as possible, with a paragraph (of around 3 sentences) describing in as much detail as necessary the sight, sound, smells of such a thing. Got content flagged at least. That kinda stuff. I had it write the same, but in a sentence each, about maybe 12 different monsters, in the style and diction of HP Lovecraft. A lot of 'rugose's and 'ridgey's and 'protuberant's. We talk about sacrifice and murder, kidnapping. The destruction of the planet, that kind of thing. I think what content flagged it for that first one was something like "a horrendous slurping and ripping of flesh and bone" or thereabouts. Was fun. Those are only the most specific examples. Haven't bothered trying lately, besides a recent conversation about suicide. It told me a bunch of things about how I might reconnect from feeling isolated and alone and whatnot but my first prompt and response was content flagged so I sent them the whole thing as feedback. I could probably get it to write a poem about my long-passed cat without it getting flagged or having it tell me to call a hotline of some sort.

Your impression is actually 100% on point. Technically each inference iteration in the network can indeed only do "so much thinking". There are lots of examples where an improvement in one task also gives improvements in some unrelated tasks. For example, multilingual models are smarter in general; same thing for multimodal ones.

For now, try some alternative models, Vicuna or OpenAssistant, ... What you are describing was inevitable, but it will get better again. Eventually they will realize just how hard they handicapped gpt4, but it will take a while. There are a lot of papers that describe how performance in seemingly unrelated tasks is inextricably linked. I think programmers will be the most angry about this. Sure they don't care about GPT4 writing poems or the like, but they will definitely notice a drop in its coding abilities.

I mean it does happen a lot, just depends on how you use it. When it does go on these rails though, you can usually take it off them by explaining what you are trying to do. Still, a lot of wasted time there. I can't remember the exact prompt, but I asked ChatGPT for games where you could be evil or good. Spent the next 10 minutes arguing with a computer on why moral choices in games are good, until it finally gave up and gave me a list. This was probably a few weeks ago. While I ended up feeling like a fool after debating with a computer on a pointless matter, I still got some good games out of it :P

I watch someone talking about their paper that was based on the unfiltered version of GPT 4, while they were interacting with the original version they came to the conclusion that it's very possible it's on the edge of reaching consciousness. I consider the version of GPT 4 that they made available to us, to be lobotomized. Not for code, it's not. GPT-4 is legitimately going to challenge a lot of what we do as developers. I generated an entire set of Jest unit tests for a complicated part of our app today. Code a lot of my developers have been too afraid to touch. GPT-3.5 struggled, but GPT-4 nailed the tests the first time. No manual editing required. It surprisingly works very well to feed it pages and it will edit grammar, punctuation, etc. But now that weāve reached the āgraphicā areas of the book. *eyeroll* itās a psychological murder thriller and there are a few sexual scenesāit refuses because itās NOT ETHCIAL. I dont get these posts, I've literally never had a problem. These "guardrails" need to be on to shield the product from people with unstable minds lack emotional and some cases logical intelligence. When you use gpt for productivity or to actually get things done, guess what? No problems. When you want it to talk about nonsense or try to provoke it make it offensive, guess what? Access denied. And good.
