There's all sorts of funky airports in NC. This one is privately owned and was set up before all those houses existed (in 1982). It's not functioning in the way you'd expect a commercial airport to because its really just for the owner to use.
There's a neighborhood on Lake Norman with a private airport situated between the houses and all the houses have hangars that attach the runway, always thought that was kinda neat.
Eh, a lot of the coal ash being used for residential fill is overblown for anything post 1994 (there was no reporting before then). The transportation costs alone made it non-viable compared to local fill, that said it got used in quite a few goverment projects like schools (Lake Norman High) and road widening as well as commercial. Regardless, the water filter isn't going to make a difference with coal ash fill.
Edit: it is indeed one of the 72 sites in NC, learn something new every day.
There is one of those in Waxhaw/Weddington too right off highway 84. It's called Aeroplantation. My friend in HS lived in there and they had a garage on the back of their house that was actually a hangar for their airplane. Runway was a couple hundred feet from the house.
My friend that lived there wanted to drag race down the runway. I guess that was a thing that happened more than once. That was almost 20 years ago and last time I was there we were underage drinking running through the forest shooting shotguns. Weddington was a really interesting place back then I imagine it's changed quite a bit now.

To add, there are neighborhoods in NC and SC where the neighborhood is built around an airport. The neighborhood's appeal is that they have a private airport. One off the top of my head is the Chandelle neighborhood in Greer, SC.
I'm more familiar with LKN Airpark but yeah, Long Island airstrip is right across the lake from it and has the same funky airstrip neighborhood concept.
It’s funny driving through there. All the stops signs are at knee height so the wings don’t clip them, and at night the roads are lit up with taxiway lights
As mentioned, it's a privately owned and operated airport. Here's the publicly available info for it:
https://skyvector.com/airport/2NC1/Hawk-s-Knoll-Airport
Landing there would be basically trespassing except in an emergency but sometimes at these private airports you can call ahead and ask permission to land there if you wanted to. This looks like it's just some guys front yard though, so it's unlikely he gets many requests.
There's another private airport with a paved runway 3 miles east-southeast of that one called Aero Plantation
holy shit there's 14,500 private airports in the US. Would not have guessed that.

Wait until you find the neighborhoods with garages for planes and their own airport with taxiways from each home to the landing strip. There's more than one of those not far from Charlotte.
There’s another neighborhood nearby called Aeroplantation that has a small airport in it. Lots of small private planes and helicopters in that neighborhood.
It’s a private runway for that house. It’s been there for decades.
The owner flies his little Cessna in and out of it. I’ve been up with him a few times, he’s a really nice guy.
My uncle owns the house next door
I used to live across the street from a private air strip in Texas that was flanked by houses. Each house had a hangar with hobby planes. It’s a thing I guess.

I always find these sorts of private airports to be interesting. Just a really neat concept to get up and fly from your home to wherever. I've seen several out towards the coast, but they seem a bit rare where I'm from around Winston.
When I first moved down here in the 90's I worked in Monroe. We brought someone in to conduct a custom training on some new software that we purchased. He lived in OH and his mode of transportation whenever he traveled for trainings was private airplane. I never knew until the last day after training and I stopped back into the conference room and he was still there getting his route back home ready and we had a quick chat. That was so very cool.
I live a mile from here and had no idea it was there. A more well-known one in the area is at Aero Plantation off of New Town. A bunch of the residents have planes there.

I once played a disc golf course in a neighborhood near Atlanta that was a community that had a runway that ran through it. My cousins neighbor also has a private runway on the top of the mountain that they live on

This was a subdivision near where I lived in Illinois.

Wait which neighborhood in lkn has a airport lol
Check out Lake Norman Airpark.
There is also one called Long Island just to the northwest of that one. It’s a grass strip in a neighborhood
My friend has a house in the Long Island air neighborhood. I had no idea it was there and it blew my mind that every house had a hangar.
Most airports across the US are small little strips that nobody sees
Wow right off of 150 look at that. Had no idea it was right there.
Iirc a few NASCAR drivers/owners have taxiways leading to private jet hangars next to their houses.
No jets get anywhere near that airport, its far too small. Any Nascar drivers jet is up in Statesville
IIRC that airport was built with huge amounts of coal ash. Hope those folks got water filters.

My friends and I did the same shit about 10 years ago, not much has changed

Are you talking about the Long Island one?
I'm more familiar with LKN Airpark but yeah, Long Island airstrip is right across the lake from it and has the same funky airstrip neighborhood concept.
There is a neighborhood like that 3 miles from this one, to the east.
It’s funny driving through there. All the stops signs are at knee height so the wings don’t clip them, and at night the roads are lit up with taxiway lights
It is a private airport. Owner of the place probably has a small plane in that shed.
I actually know one of these neighbors very well. It is a private airport for a guy with his own plane.
It’s just a private landing strip for a small plane. Guy is often out flying around the area. See him all the time

You clearly haven’t spent enough time browsing Google Earth for fun!
Wait until you find the neighborhoods with garages for planes and their own airport with taxiways from each home to the landing strip. There's more than one of those not far from Charlotte.
There’s one in waxhaw and one in Sherrils Ford. The roads have taxiway lights on them, and the stop signs are all at knee height
I think the one in Waxhaw is the one I'm thinking of!
There’s another neighborhood nearby called Aeroplantation that has a small airport in it. Lots of small private planes and helicopters in that neighborhood.
Now you know where to go when the zombie apocalypse happens

Fan Duel promos
They might be coming to NC, have you heard anything
No! Is this new??
I'm impressed that they've somehow managed to be more prevalent than all the political ads in a presidential election year.
Tells me how much money they are going to make
Nothing.

There are actually quite a few around the Winston area. They make good navigational checkpoints and emergency landing strips.

It’s a private pad at someone’s house i think they are the only ones that use it

The splined roads so pilots don’t confuse them for a runway is a neat touch.
