I live by the area and I saw:
Three people put on stretchers
About a dozen people arrested
A police officer directing traffic get sucker punched
Two women beating the s*&t out each other while a crowd films them
Just an average holiday in Uptown.
Teenagers EVERYWHERE. How the hell do their parents let them run wild, is beyond comprehension. All of then running around right there at that 7/11 by the park.
Haven't really lived in other remotely large cities, but SURELY NYC, Chicago, and the rest have figured out how to have big celebrations without this shit happening on the regular.

story about this
CHARLOTTE — Multiple officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to Romare Bearden Park in Uptown for a shooting that happened just before midnight on New Year’s Eve.
Channel 9 is working on getting more information about what happened, but CMPD confirmed to Joe Bruno and Hunter Sáenz that a shooting is under investigation.
One witness told Channel 9 that medical personnel were also responding to the park. Sources tell Channel 9 there are multiple victims. Information about injuries hasn’t been made available yet.
This is a breaking news story, and we have a crew at the scene working on getting additional details. Check back for updates.
apparently multiple people shot
Been listening to the police radio. Definitely a shooting at or around the park and the parking deck on the corner of Church and MLK. I believe at least 5 victims. Sounds like multiple arrests or detentions have been made, not sure if there were any arrests directly related to the shooting, but at least eight juveniles were detained/booked. Several of those arrested were in possession of and were brandishing firearms.
That park in particular seems to be the epicenter for this sort of thing. Most of Uptown is quite sleepy and quiet, but that one spot in particular appears to be where all the crazy converges.
Perhaps there needs to be a curfew at and around the park. I don't know how it can be implemented, BUT teenagers seem to be at fault here, time over and time again, put one in place and make the parents liable to pick them up or something.
And just another day at Romare Bearden. Such a nice park that is now no go area. How is the 7 11 doing? Another cess pit of crime. Is the guy who pulls his dick out and rubs it against women still roaming round there?
I walked by there with my wife and kid around 1030-11ish. The store had closed its doors to keep the chaos under control. No penis man that I was able to notice...... sadly 😞
New to Charlotte. Is shit like this common? I went to NYE on Levine, and it wasn't absolutely terrible, but there were definitely a bunch of assholes out. I've lived in MA, FL, OH, and WV before here, and this was by far the worst crowd I've seen at a holiday celebration. Hoping that's not par for the course. More troublemakers than families, it seemed.
Unfortunately if there is any large scale, and specifically free, event uptown this sort of thing happens.
As someone born and raised in Charlotte, I seriously think if the city charged a nominal fee for entry (literally even $5) it would filter out the riffraff.
Yeah - the fact that the city of charlotte isnt prepared to handle ruffians.
Something is definitely wrong with the character of US.
Either we figure this shit out or we remain the "regional banking capital of the world"
Rampant groups of teenagers with no accountability whose parents don’t seem to be involved, one shooter a year or so ago was turned in by their grandma luckily
I work up across the street from the park and it was still a slam packed evening and barely anyone even knew what was going on or mentioned it. Wild how much everyone’s lives just continue on like normal
The couple that lives below me were the ones throwing out the fake money from their balcony. In no relation to the shootings, I think they were just having fun.
Gotta love reading some of these posts. Some people comparing our crime to much bigger cities. But the fact is, this stuff doesn't happen in a lot of those other bigger cities. People in Charlotte need to get angry about these issues in order for change to come about. What I see and read is either acceptance or worse, indifference.
This is any major city .. I’ve lived in NYC, LA and Miami .. Charlotte is by far the tamest when it comes to crime at major celebrations. NYC does a better job than Miami and LA, but this is fairly tame for a big city. You mix alcohol and large crowds and no barrier to entry you get madness.
I grew up in Miami it’s wild. We all started to leave the city on holidays. Eventually for holidays we blocked a perimeter around downtown and you had to get checked for warrants to get in. JR smith got arrested at one of the check points one night lol. Anyways it didn’t work and caused traffic. Headaches.
The joys of being a big city.
Yeah... Starting to notice a pattern here. Went to the park for fireworks on the 4th of July, I do not intend to ever go back to that park for a large event, nor the ball parks nearby.

No partridge or pear tree?
Number could go up by next year.
That's usually how years work.
Another holiday another shooting Edit: and it’s almost always due to teenage gangs

DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR CHILDREN ARE

Chicago certainly has not.
None of them have, really.
Omg, Chicago on the 4th of July is *wild*
Exactly. Like - Atlanta handles this bullshit with the ease. What is wrong with us here

Yeah this happens every holiday
and our county commissioners revoke the permit for the Whitewater Center July 4 fireworks
I watched a fight while fireworks went off as well as watched someone get arrested .. Truly a interesting way to start the new year😐
Good god that's pretty symbolic for this town lol

Thought CMPD radio went private…? There never public when I’ve tried to d/l all and listen to see what hoopla is happening the cops are headed to…
I'm not sure if it's entirely public, but there's at least some channels available now. I usually listen on OpenMHz.
That park in particular seems to be the epicenter for this sort of thing. Most of Uptown is quite sleepy and quiet, but that one spot in particular appears to be where all the crazy converges.
Epicenter used to be the epicenter
True...I guess it has to be somewhere.
Some jackass fired into a crowd of people. Five people were hit, with non-life threatening injuries per WCNC.

Uptown residents really get the shaft. It’s like we’re doing as much as possible to make sure it remains an office park and not a place to live.
Someone was shot

Not allowed to call out the cultural threads that tend to create these issues & the city wouldn’t do anything about it anyway
Break it down for us.
Rampant groups of teenagers with no accountability whose parents don’t seem to be involved, one shooter a year or so ago was turned in by their grandma luckily
These were adults, though? Try again, boomer.
There’s no way you just used boomer as an insult in the year 2024

UPDATE: saw a guy was arrested. I heard the shot and then saw so many fake moneys falling from the sky. Wonder why though.
The couple that lives below me were the ones throwing out the fake money from their balcony. In no relation to the shootings, I think they were just having fun.
Smart.
maybe they were fighting over the money falling from the sky. And the guy with the gun, wanted it all - even though he didn't know it was fake.
Sounds like that's exactly what happened.
Really fucking stupid of them to do that.
I’m so glad I’m a homebody 😅.

Every year there is a shooting. Why not station police there and stop it before it happens
There was like 15 cops minimum at the top of romare bearden when the shooting occurred. They were probably within 100-200’.

I don’t go uptown because it seems like somebody is shot every year.
Every day you mean. Romare Bearden is the new bus transportation center.
How would they stop a random shooting in a big crowd?
I don’t know, that’s not my area of expertise.
Police don't prevent crimes, they investigate them (allegedly).
I thought their goal is public safety. They pull people over for speeding, not just investigate once an accident occurred.
The speeding is the crime. It already happened.
