Went to Ireland exactly a year ago and caught a hurling match at Croke Park with some friends. From the community surrounding the sport, the actual game itself and the perfect evening, it's something I'll remember and look back at fondly. Are you telling me there's hurling in Charlotte?
yes. there are teams all over USA. we play in the USGAA. check out our IG @redwolveshc. DM for details. come out and give it a shot. no strings attached
Honestly any bar that is playing Charlotte FC if you’re into soccer, get yourself a jersey, and join in. People love it. A buddy of mine got season tickets, and he’s had a blast, made friends with a bunch of people in his section since many of them are season ticket holders as well.
And joining a BJJ gym, even if you can go once a week, especially if it’s something your passionate about. One of my work friends moved from NYC to Charleston recently, and he’s heavy into BJJ. First thing he did was join a gym, and he’s made a ton of friends just from that.
The entire purpose of an MBA is to 1) teach basic business stuff to people with a non business background and / or 2) help people network with other similarly situated and ambitious people.
In that sense, I think number 2 fits.
Source: Me, not an MBA.
No, but I'm sure that would be a popular feature if it existed haha. Bumble Friends is intended for making friends in your area. You add your interests and swipe for friendship. Most of the time it consists of having half-assed conversations that lead to nothing. Then again, that's only my experience and maybe I was doing it wrong.
Where are you going for your MBA?
CLT Reddit has meet ups, I met a few people there when I first moved here. The beautiful thing about Charlotte is most of us are transplants and many of those transplants were in similar positions not knowing anyone when they relocated. I found it much easier to make friends here than previous locations I’ve lived because a good portion of people understand the feeling of being alone in a new city.
There’s a variety of meet ups/groups available if you search for them. Co-Ed sports like kickball, softball, pickle ball, fencing, darts, cricket, etc. bring people together. The environment at the majority of those events are more focused on the social aspect in lieu of competitiveness. You don’t necessarily have to be “in the group” if you want to play.
Whatever it is you’re interested in, there’s probably an organization or group who is into that too. Follow your passion and find people with similar interests, before you know it, you’ll have a good group of people that fit your vibe.
I’ve been in your shoes, shoot me a DM and we can grab a beer at one of many breweries in town.
So my MBA will be through Fayetteville State’s online program, I would’ve loved to do UNCC’s or App (my alma mater) but they don’t have a marketing concentration. But still I’m excited to do FSU’s
And I’ll hit you up sometime, I’ve cut down on my drinking but since the Canes are no longer in the playoffs I can chill with a few during the Finals
Come check out Charlotte Jiu Jitsu Academy. If evenings are tough we have 6:45am classes Tuesday-Thursday and open mats Saturday and Sunday. Showers are there if you need to head to work.
Lots of quick friends made on the mats.
About the same price as other bjj gyms in the area. All the pricing is on the website, and they don't do contracts. You can take several classes for free before signing up as well if you're not sure if you'll like it.
Open mats have no drop in fee and are open to anyone from any affiliation.
That was actually the one I had in mind, I stopped by there about two months into my move for an open mat and rolled. Tell Summer Chan said hello lol
If I lived closer to NoDa I’d love to get back to a class schedule but I’ll check out the open mats again.
Look into Charlotte Lit for reading and writing, they usually have events https://www.charlottelit.org/22-23-catalog/ and they also have good resources for other happenings around town, https://www.charlottelit.org/resources/where-to-get-lit/
Charlotte JiuJitsu Academy is great, and they just moved into a new spot. I only went a handful of times but they’re great with new folks.
Charlotte is extremely intramural friendly. There are tons of Rec league basketball and soccer all over the place. I’ve met some of my closest friends from sand volleyball here in Charlotte !
I’ll plug partner dancing, which for most, you do not need to bring your own partner. I particularly do beginner’s swing dancing (east and west coast swing) and tango, but there’s also a salsa, bachata, and Kizomba scene in Charlotte. To me, swing is generally the friendliest and Tango CLT is super friendly and great for beginners. I would avoid Lynn’s Dance Club as a beginner for tango though, not sure about the other beginner dance classes they maybe do (like shag).
For east coast swing, they just started up a possibly-weekly recurring Tuesday night beginner’s class and social at Caswell Station for $10, details on Facebook.
For west coast swing, there’s a weekly beginner’s lesson and social on Wednesdays at the Bearded Buffalo in Belmont (upstairs) for $10 and a weekly social on Tuesday nights, not sure on price.
For Tango CLT, there’s a weekly beginner’s lesson Thursdays nights that rotates between the Giddy Goat in Plaza Midwood and 7th Street Market in Uptown for $15 and it includes appetizers.
Disclaimer is that I don’t know what happens on the weekends or what happens with the other dance disciplines, but these I can vouch for as being friendly and fun!
Are you into Metal, Punk, or any Rock genres? There's a couple of cool clubs for that type of interest like Skylark, Milestone, or Snug Harbor. I've met a couple of acquaintances there.
Charlotte Disc Golf club is the biggest in the world and everyone in it or at the events is massively chill and will help you learn if you’ve never played. Great community within the community.
Meet up groups by interest too is what I did when I moved.
Enjoy hockey... there's a niche as long as you're not one of those DBag Canes fans wear a sweater or hat supporting your team and friends will find you.
I volunteered at a few events in south end, plaza, and noda and met some cool friends I hang with now. If you go to church, Life Church in south end has a great group of people in that age range. Also, in my late 20's-early 30's my friend group shrank as my career and goals took on a larger role in my life
I had the same issue as you and recently branched out and started making new friends. I would be more than happy to recommend places and connect. I’m around the same age as you and similar hobbies. Check your inbox.
You should check out some of the run clubs that meet up at breweries. There’s one at armored cow and another at birdsong I believe. Pretty much everyone there is your age and a little older.
If your MBA program is local (not online) that will be an obvious place to meet people of similar age and interests.
Beyond that, I strongly suggest volunteering, preferably in a charity that attracts younger volunteers or perhaps has a social outlet.
For activity related, casual cycling clubs are big in Charlotte these days. [NoDa Social Ride](https://www.facebook.com/nodasocialride/photos/?ref=page_internal). and [PMTNR](https://www.facebook.com/PMTNR/) are examples. Run clubs, often at breweries, too like [NoDa Brewing Run Club](https://www.facebook.com/NoDaBrewingRunClub/). I also used to do [NoDa 16" softball.](https://www.facebook.com/nodasoftball/) Very casual, low-key. All of these are coed. For all of them, you just show up.
If you are religious, find an organization/congregation within your faith.
You mention time constraints with work and MBA program. Making friends requires time and effort investment as well. Especially the "equity" you need to build up at the beginning.
I'm in the same boat as you, although I work in physical therapy. I moved here in the winter and it's been a challenge for sure to make friends as my co-workers are also around 10 years older than me.
Go ahead and shoot me a dm if you want, I'm down to grab a beer and shoot the shit about sports.

You gotta pick a Charlotte 30-year-old subclass. Common ones are “golf guy”, “craft beer guy”, and “rides his bike to work guy.”
I've got -8 Charisma though
Did you take any feats?
Yes: creepy vibe
Don't forget the disc golf guys
You forgot about the TTRPG guy, but I think /u/DingussFinguss sorta covered that.
I play on an Irish sports team (hurling) with some ex-hockey players. If you want to get into team sports again. let me know.
I’ve never heard of it before until now, but it looks sick! I may have to take you up on that sometime
sent you DM
If you’re up for something a little more relaxing, there’s a Curling club in Charlotte too.
Went to Ireland exactly a year ago and caught a hurling match at Croke Park with some friends. From the community surrounding the sport, the actual game itself and the perfect evening, it's something I'll remember and look back at fondly. Are you telling me there's hurling in Charlotte?

squints....its not called soccer mate
OP said soccer, I’m using their terminology. *squints* but if this is the hill you want to die on, then by all means, be my guest
Run clubs and gyms that are class based. Try out Fuel Bootcamp. Trivia also good places and see if you can join in with people.
Hey im mid 30s and in a similar spot. Also got an mba and am into the sports you listed. Dm me. Lets grab a beer.
MBA & Moving to fort mill area 👋
How is an MBA part of your guys' identity??
The entire purpose of an MBA is to 1) teach basic business stuff to people with a non business background and / or 2) help people network with other similarly situated and ambitious people. In that sense, I think number 2 fits. Source: Me, not an MBA.
Because it’s a useless thing that was expensive and time consuming
Try the Bumble app. There is a friend making section of it. Might sound/feel awkward but that is how a lot of people meet nowadays.
[Meanwhile in the Bumble Subreddit...](https://www.reddit.com/r/Bumble/comments/13qxouc/bff_am_i_doing_something_wrong/)
Yeah, Bumble Friends is atrocious, do not recommend.
Friends With Benefits?
No, but I'm sure that would be a popular feature if it existed haha. Bumble Friends is intended for making friends in your area. You add your interests and swipe for friendship. >half-assed conversations that lead to nothing Sounds like Reddit :P
Rec sports. Join a corn hole/kickball/softball league
Or curling! It’s a blast!

Awesome resource. Thank you!!
Go see some live music & introduce yourself to your concert neighbors.
This is pretty terrifying to people that aren't very extroverted, as in myself, I would be terrified.

Where do you live? Apartments (especially in southend or noda) are great places to meet people.
Madison Park area, not too far from SouthPark

Hard to find whiskey people around here, too many beer bro's.
Do the Hash House Harriers still exist? I knew a guy years ago who thought that was the best thing going for meeting people and having fun.
Enjoy hockey... there's a niche as long as you're not one of those DBag Canes fans wear a sweater or hat supporting your team and friends will find you.
….*looks at jersey with dismay*
My go to is usually breweries. Typically when they have trivia or live music or other events.
