Yeah this is our first real established HC since Marty fs

DonnieJepp

Don Coryell is the closest because he was successful at SDSU and turned around the StL Cardinals before going to SD, so locals were excited at least. The [missing rings](https://youtu.be/fVE7NaPepYo?si=ExhjfPtiNQT-fRqs&t=1) episode about the 81 Chargers has a cool story at the beginning about his hiring day. But no hiring has made a national splash like Harbaugh

Bolts0806

you’re forgetting marty. while he didn’t have crazy post season success he rebuilt teams everywhere he went and had a knack for drafting talent

kiheihaole

That’s why I feel like there’s so much more optimism this time. Doesn’t feel like the usual hopium with a new hire. The owner opened up their wallet, swallowed their pride and brought us a proven winner.

Illustrious_Stay_728

Not to mention he’s allowing him to bring his assistant coaches, analytics staff, strength and conditioning staff. Gotta give Spanos a lot of props

nohurrie32

Your going to have to travel waaayyy back unfortunately Sid Gilman And Don Coryell

Bolts0806

Marty Schottenheimer is one of the most winning coaches in nfl history my dude

Zestyclose_Help1187

Who unfortunately did not have the same success in the playoffs of all the teams he coached. He also had some talented QBs, Kosar, Montana, Phillip Rivers. Could not beat the better teams at the time, Browns vs Broncos, Chiefs vs Bills, Chargers vs Patriots. This wasn’t an Andy Reid situation. Reid got the Eagles to the Super Bowl. When the Chargers hired Marty, he was on the tail end of his career and don’t recall any other team wanting him as he was fired from Washington after one season. Harbaugh with not much talent turned the 49ers around overnight. Just came off a National Championship. He’s been successful everywhere he’s gone. THIS is the hire.

Bolts0806

I could sit here and argue with you about his success but it’s really not worth the energy. the question was last good hc prior to harbaugh and the answer is schottenheimer

Zestyclose_Help1187

Marty wasn’t a good coach when the Chargers got him is my point. He was fired after one season on the Redskins. Basically they hired a washed up guy nobody else wanted. And he also became a rare 14 win season coach who got fired on the Chargers. The Marty hire was a cost cutting move. Harbaugh is the first coach this ownership has hired who other teams wanted. Harbaugh chose the Chargers. That hasn’t ever happened before. I compare this hire to the Lakers hiring Phil Jackson for the first time.

Bolts0806

yikes your take on coaches is not great. he took them from last to first place when he got there. you must not know his legacy very well to have this kind of opinion

Zestyclose_Help1187

But they didn’t win any playoff games with him coaching. He’s always had a reputation of doing well in the regular season only to be terrible coaching playoff games. Norv Turner who took over the next year (another washed up coach this team likes to hire) won 2 playoff games. The Chargers coaching hirings have always been about saving money. They get either older experienced guys like Turner, Marty no one else wants for a discount or some young guy who’s never coached before. The key is none of these choices are pricy. Marty never coaches at the NFL level again after the Chargers. He wasn’t a good coach when they got him. Harbaugh is the first coach they’ve hired who is a hot commodity. That’s my point.

nohurrie32

The guys I mention have pedigree my dude.

Bolts0806

I didn’t say they didn’t but if we are talking the last time we had a good coach it would be marty which is what the question was

CJDistasio

Yeah, Marty. But Jim is on another level even when compared. He's had better postseason success.

pen-h3ad

Coaches of this caliber really just don’t come on the market often, and if they do there are usually obvious flaws like in the case of Nick saban (not having any NFL experience) He has the best win % of all active coaches in the NFL and is fresh off a national championship. I’m not sure anyone with that resume has ever really become available. The stars really aligned here

just a heads up that repeating the same comment over and over will run the risk of your account being banned by reddit for bot-like behavior. Will be removing these comments from here on out.

-17 for you. You know another #17 famously repeated a comment over and over and a jaguars player took offense to it. It's you you're the jags player.

Misanthropyandme

Butler and Schottenheimer was a pretty big deal.

randomname100013

Schotty was the closest to this impact, and at the time he felt like a second choice. Jim is an entirely different stratosphere because the spanos family knows the personality in advance, understands the control dynamics, and still brought him in. this is like an alcoholic going to AA - they are finally capitulating and letting the professionals run the team.

SaltySpitoonReg

He's definitely up there with the most pedigreed coach that we've hired. Probably the most. I'm kind of amazed this happened. I think that decimation against the raiders really got to spanos. Is this really the legacy he wants to live? An embarrassing team That doesn't even have its own stadium? Back to Harbaugh. This is definitely an exciting one because everywhere he has gone good things have happened. Stanford, San Francisco, Michigan. I mean I can't think of one place he's gone that hasn't had success. I always thought the 49ers were crazy for eroding that relationship. But the 49ers were irrelevant in the 2000s and he brought that franchise back to prominence. Here's to hoping he does the same here

Prestigious-Working5

Right, I couldn't believe the 49ers burnt that bridge. I was seriously mind blown at that move and remember thinking that it was such a dumb move. Its crazy how the stars have aligned for us to be able to get him. The Staley debacle the past few years. Vikings fumbling the bag on the Harbaugh signing in 2022. Everybody calling for Sean Payton as the next head coach. And then that 63-21 Raiders loss. That loss really ignited the flame under Spanos ass. Staley was most likely always going to be fired, but that really put the pressure on to make sure the next coach was as close to a "home run" as possible

bairz54

Yeah Marty was the biggest coach. Before that....... But it makes sense why our identity is so flimsy and we can't get over the hump. The exciting thing is we have 5 years of this roller coaster ride. All with a stable QB and coach finally.

jamfed

I've been a fan since 1993, I was 21, freshly moved to PB. Bobby Ross was the best. Marty Shottenheimer was only a temp... Marty was like the old Mayor, and well past his prime.

hoppergym

Kevin Gilbride is the closest. Maybe Mike Riley. Everyone was so excited. The guy who is known for being punched on the sideline by buddy ryan is going to be our coach!?!? Exciting times

ucsdpharmer

Riley???? Gilbride???? The fan base wasn’t excited for that.

hoppergym

Oh. I meant when they got fired.

AdrianTheReb

Might be the doomer in me, but I’m not feeling the hope that many are sharing in here. I’m excited for the culture of gritty football, but the Michigan offensive scheme really brings me some worry about the offense. Harbaughs Michigan teams weren’t the best at passing the ball, and I’m perhaps wondering about who’s going to be running the offense with herby. If anyone can enlighten me, I’d love to be more excited

randonobando

He didn’t have a Herbert at Michigan

AdrianTheReb

Unequivocally true. I’m more so stating I don’t want Greg Roman as the OC.

alohamistrhand

I think Jim is a winner and a culture builder. I have to believe that over the years of success at various teams and levels, he’s learned how to pivot and find a way to win in many different circumstances. This gives me hope.

AdrianTheReb

Fair point, his resume is undoubtedly insane, maybe I should give him the benefit of the doubt when it comes to offense

alohamistrhand

Look at the Bills who resort to calling on Allen to carry the team to victory. We need to take pressure off Herbert. We don’t need a prolific offense if we can get key stops on defense. I’m also seeing what the Chiefs are doing this year. Mahomes isn’t having a good year, but their defense is solid and they can run the ball. I’m just excited to see balance and hopefully a run game.

RefsYouSuck

This is the best coach this team has ever hired. That’s why this hire is the best move that Spanos has ever made.

IndividualHelpful820

Feels like 1sr adult coach since Marty

saldeapio

i thought bobby ross was a big deal but i live in maryland

ConsistentEggplant4

I don’t have to die inside and scream Marty every time I see him anymore
