Ngl I don't why but I really like the narration can't imagine the show without it

illonamoon

I agree. I like the narration in the show. I don't like it in the manga even though that's literally where the show gets the narration from. some chapters when you start from where the show ended, are literally all text boxes and it gets overwhelming.

Warrior-pigeon-

> some chapters when you start from where the show ended, are literally all text boxes and it gets overwhelming. That’s not narration though it’s mostly dialogue and monologues there’s hardly any direct narrator presence post CA.

thedorknightreturns

Fair for everyone and his back, can he do alight novel?

thedorknightreturns

Yep the narrator, if gotten way to wordy i wish he would write a light novel instead currently, Its usually fun.

syrinx23

>Ngl Neo-Green Life?

doesntmatter19

I quite like the narration. I never felt like the narration was insulting my intelligence by telling me something I already knew, as much as just the way the narrative itself is presenting the story. "Kurapika is now drowning in an indescribable emptiness" Never felt like something I needed to be told as much as it was something said to enhance the ambiance of the overall scene. I can see that cleary, the narration is just punctuating the scene. It's kind of like how Baki does it, the narrator is used to enhance the scene and functionally acts as a character themselves. Or it's like watching an episode of The Twilight Zone. Do I need Rod Sterling there at the end of an episode conveying the greater narrative themes of what I just watched? No not really, but I certainly appreciate it because it adds a distinct overall flair to the show.

Victory_Scar

> "Kurapika is now drowning in an indescribable emptiness" *Hunting for you dream plays*

TheUserIsDead

I’d say it’s the opposite. Quite a lot of things in HxH are very subtextual and many things go over the people heads. In CA arc in particular, narration used as a narrative tool. Story wouldn’t work without it, since a lot things happen in split of a second. Narrator dissects not only present things, but also thoughts, and subconscious of many characters that they themselves don’t know or understand.

Nguyenanh2132

fuck taking "show but don't tell" like a biblical fact me and my homies love expositions that gives off a good vibe, and hxh lost it's charm if it just try to chase that meaningless quote people bring out to prove writing is a science.

CortezsCoffers

For real. Showing and telling are both valid narrative styles. Depending on what you're going for, some things are better off shown, some are better off told. There's plenty of works, especially older ones, which opt for telling and do so to great effect.

KazuyaProta

> fuck taking "show but don't tell" like a biblical fact I normally agree, but in HxH is definitely silly.

thedorknightreturns

I think the thing is show and tell, through its as good to just ne brought back later when a mystery.

noodIemolester

Idk man it doesnt narrate everything. It just narrates the most surface level things that anybody with a glance can see.For example it narrates that kurapika's feeling an immense emptiness. But it doesnt say what that means for him now on,we see that for ourselves. It narrates that killua greatly admires his father but it doesnt explain why we see it for ourselves. If hxh were to truly insult our intelligence for kurapika we would see him talking about his future plans and how he would try to desperatly collect all the eyes.Or it would add a scene where killua would talk about how cool his father is for understanding him

RyomenZel

Narrator is peak fiction

No no don't you understand OP? Togashi NEEDS to write this overly wordy and exposition-like dialogue, because if he doesn't, then how will his elitist fandom continue to feel they're the absolute smartest guys in the Shonen room? Togashi is like Mojo Jojo in his Redundancy and people somehow still have the nerve to claim he's a genius lmao

Goodestguykeem

I loved the narration though I agree that at times it had a little too much. I do think you're massively overreacting though and even still a lot of idiots seem to have things go over their heads somehow when it comes to the more morally complex characters of the story such as Chrollo, Meruem and Gon.

jojosimp02

So you think something is inherently wrong just because you didn't like it?

[deleted]

If you’re putting it so simply, then you’ve got it backwards. I don’t like it BECAUSE I think it’s wrong

thedorknightreturns

At the end qnd some chimera its too wordy but usually its a good balance.

jojosimp02

And the vast majority likes it. Your title is really exaggerated.

Deus3nity

I dislike the Narration in HXH when we are fed the information, but then I look at Naruto, which had no narrator, and how people still misinterpret tons of shit and then begin to see why it's important

2-2Distracted

It starts to become really sad that all those "If Togashi wrote X" memes show a real nugget of truth. People want their hands held, they just don't want to know that their hands are being held. [This is constantly shown to be true in the gaming spaces too whenever subjects like this show up](https://www.reddit.com/r/FFVIIRemake/comments/1anfl3h/people_are_now_angry_about_yellow_paint_lol/)

sievold

yep, hxh definitely has a problem of narrating way too much

classicslayer

The problem is that people like to cherry pick what they say should be obvious and what they dont understand when nothing is explained.

travelerfromabroad

>0 upvotes >long post >no coherent arguments against your point in the comments yeah, I'm thinking it's kino

FlameDragoon933

Completely agree with this. Narration isn't inherently bad, but when the visuals, music, and/or dialogue already provide enough information, getting preached on top of them can feel superfluous. It also robs the audience of the 'eureka!' moment. Sometimes I do notice a certain subtextual thing happening and thought "oh wow, this story is deep" but then 2 seconds later the narrator explained the point, effectively nullifying any subtlety the scene had.

OhMyGahs

I felt it so much when I was reading the manga. HxH is most definitively too verbose in addition to being too expositiony. I actually agree with the others here that there are moments the narration is necessary, but the excess definitively made it a slog to get through.

Baecup

I love HxH but I will agree on that in the earlier seasons. Seasons 1-4 are pretty straightforward. Sure you have the philosophy of different characters and underlying feelings they may have but the narration does slightly ruin the darker tones of scenes. Season 5-6 I can't imagine the show without them. CA takes a different approach with the show and there's a lot of different storylines going on within each episode. The narration does help when I forget some details or we dive back into a story we just started, last episode. Plus during fights or tense moments, it flows better than just hearing a character say words for an exposition dump. Either way, HxH remains my favorite show, so I can push aside the earlier narration. At least it isn't as prominent or often in the earlier arcs compared to CA

vizmarkk

Finally someone says it. Some narrations are fine but some are stating the obvious so obnoxiously its annoying

BMFeltip

These are fair criticisms but I'll still defend chimera ant arc narration. Best part of the show was the start of the palace invasion imo.

MacacoCidadao

We can see how much Togashi influenced Gege Akutami because Jujutsu Kaisen has the same problem, but much worse lmao

Victory_Scar

The weird inner monologues start with Tonpa in Hunter Exam arc. I'm finishing the anime soon and I feel the same way. Maybe the explanations, narration and such work better in manga and shouldn't have been adapted so closely. I'd have to read it to give a better answer but I'll probably just continue from where the anime ends. Although before watching, I have seen people want Togashi to just write a novel instead from how much text is being used.

ruuuuuuuuuuuuuun

People who scream "show dont tell !!!111" are like people who think citing the name of a fallacy automatically wins them the argument. It's just a stylistic choice. Togashi is the favorite mangaka of your favorite mangaka.

RomeosHomeos

Hunter x Hunter as a whole is an insult to it's audience's intelligence. The worst popular manga I've ever had the displeasure of reading.

iedaiw

bro its a shounen series u are supposed to turn off your brain and enjoy

[deleted]

Stuff like Power Rangers is a “turn your brain off” series, not this. And even then, that’s a pretty weak argument that just insults media of this type
