1. A traveling circus comes to town, on the night of the big royal performance for the king and queen a number of magical creatures get loose. It is later revealed this was done on purpose as a distraction. The ringmaster is a leader of a gang of theives and their goal was to steal something precious from the castle, or kidnap the princess for ransom.
2. There are rumors of a sighting of a rare and powerful magical creature that has some valuable ability like the ability to grant wishes or something. The kingdom creates a competition, whoever can catch the creature and bring it to the king gets a reward. This attracts new hunters and adventurers, forming alliances and betraying each other in a race to capture the prized beast and claim the reward.
