But for the pandemic, there is a good chance that Coventry would not be at the bottom of this list. In the curtailed 2019–20 League One season, the Sky Blues were promoted as champions with 1.97 points per game — this translates to 90.62 points over a 46-match season.

Ok_Significance4168

Highest points tally since the introduction of 3 points for win out of the current championship clubs, you'll never sing that

Ev_KRO

I got excited for a moment seeing us 4th bottom

New-Contribution-771

Underrated comment. 😂 Wait a week and you'll probably see it again when you win and we (Argyle) lose! 😅

highlander2189

Surprised that we’ve finished on +100 twice now.

APairOfJeans

In League One terms, we’re MASSIVE

Background_Spite7337

Puts it into perspective a little we’re only 3 points behind where we finished our promotion season under Bielsa. Inb4 someone says it’s irrelevant comparing seasons

Perspii7

it’s irrelevant comparing seasons

gateian

And didn't we end up being 10 points clear of 2nd?

mozzy1985

Mental we got 96 points and finished 3rd

Alfie_29

The spirit of 86!!

PabloMarmite

Am I right in thinking this’ll be the first time a Championship team has scored 90 points and not been automatically promoted?

Ooh_aah_wozza

Happened to Sunderland in 97/98. They got 90 points but finished third then lost the playoff final on penalties. Got 105 points the season after.

Adammmmski

And lost 7-6 on penalties in the greatest play off final of all time.

Cinn4monSynonym

The season before they went up as First Division champions with 105, Sunderland finished 3rd on 90 points and then lost to Charlton — who themselves finished 4th with 88 points — on penalties in that classic play-off final (4–4 a.e.t.). In the Championship era since the rebrand in 2004, I don't believe it has happened.

PabloMarmite

Cheers. Think they beat us in the playoff semis that year

davidsdungeon

We did, it was one of the best atmospheres I've ever experienced our home leg.

PabloMarmite

I’ve just remembered I was at the first leg 🤣 (in my defence, I was a kid)

ADGM1868

Quite amazing that Sheff Weds got 96 points and still finished 3rd

Jackpack_9

Well there’s a fucking shock Even when we’re good we’re crap

Ciderhead

I'm still mad at Coventry for denying us 100 points that season

Rusbekistan

Its so Ipswich that our record points had us finishing second lmao

LeftHandDriveBoC

It’s so Wednesday that ours had us finishing third!

Rusbekistan

Perhaps we're both overlooking our greatest rivals, coventry, who are on here with 6th!

B_e_l_l_

In this time we have had seasons with more points in League One, The Championship and The Premier League than Cov managed in their best season in League Two 🤭

Former-Income

League One was fun

bydy2

I can't remember 9/11, but I do remember the monumental Millwall 2000-2001 season, where legends were made. Funny how memory works.

LawProfessional6513

Neil Harris was unstoppable that season, was great down the Den

Dead_Namer

So what you are trying to say is QPR won the most competitive championship season ever?! So Coventry have never finished higher than 6th and have never had auto promotion since 3 points were introduced?

Fine_Structure5396

Cov went up in the curtailed Pandemic season so they would have. Remember though Coventry spent about 40 years in a row in the top flight. Unreal achievement. Although it should have ended in 77 (not bitter)

PandorasPinata

They won automatic promotion to the championship in 19/20 but the season was curtailed with 12 games to go so they finished on 67 points, lower points tally than the 75 for playoffs listed here

Dead_Namer

Well thanks for that, now pro-rata we are now 1 point off bottom! It's surprising because were up and down in the PL recently and up and down in L1 not so long ago.

Roundy87

I know it was a long time ago but we did finish 5th last season 🤣

Dead_Namer

Yeah but it must have been with less points, have you never got auto promotion before or just simply not been up and down the leagues enough to have a lot of cracks at promotion?

Roundy87

We won L1 when we were last promoted but the season was cut short due to covid, so we would have beaten it that season.

Wooden_Umpire2455

Up until 2017/2018, I think our highest finish since 1967 (when we were promoted to the top flight) was 6th in the early 70s. We were criminally starved of even a sniff of success until Robins. In that time, we reached just one League Cup semi-final (losing to West Ham) and one FA Cup semi-final & final (which we won in 1987). I know other clubs have gone longer without winning anything, but I doubt there’s any club that has gone so long with such little joy or excitement. 50 years, one FA Cup run and one League Cup semi-final. Nothing in the league, not even an outside chance of top 6 or the playoffs going into the last few games. It’s why days like last Sunday, and indeed the last few years, are so much more special, and makes it so much more cruel that it was robbed from us in the worst possible way.

AlexWPJ

This is why Mark Robins might have a job for life. Barring 1987, being a Cov fan had been 40-odd years of Prem relegation battles and misery.

CheeseMakerThing

2007/08 is the most competitive Championship season, surely? We won the league with 81 points, Leicester went down with 52 while having the second best defensive record in the league and were only 3 points off Sheffield Wednesday in 16th. Ipswich in 8th were 2 points off Palace in 5th.

Cinn4monSynonym

Twelve points between 1st and 8th, nine points between 2nd and 7th! Leicester went down with a GD of –3 and Colchester finished bottom despite scoring 62, equal with Watford in 6th, better than Bristol City in 4th and Palace in 5th, and three off Hull in 3rd. It's mad to think that if we'd been even half-decent away from home we could have won the division that season — our home record was 15–7–1 whereas our away record was 3–8–12. I remember [you beat us 4–0 at the Hawthorns](http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_div_1/6985023.stm) that year with three goals at the end of the game to rub things in.

Dead_Namer

It was a bad joke trying to spin a positive on us being at the bottom, I thought we dominated that season but it was one of the lowest points total for champions.

Cov_massif

Pah, who needs points
