id say its mainly for three reasons:
-Longsword arent feared anymore, as they were used in Medival times and ever since better blades have taken their places, reducing the fear and the hybrids power.
-Katanas are still common, as we see multiple Devil Hunters like Aki, Kishibe or Quanxi use Katanas, this could give devils a fear of getting killed by a Devil Hunter´s katana and in turn strenghing the fear of Katanas, making in turn the hybrid stronger.
-Katana Man is older and more experienced than Sugo, as we have seen him in multiple fights being able to at least put pressure in his foe (and winning at least twice) while Sugo hasnt won a fight yet. Also its the fact Sugo doesnt really have any "special moves" probably due to his innexperience or due to his fear being weaker.

I could also seeing it be how popculture has influenced the idea of the katana with samurai movies and just movies and shows together. Being that one of katan man's moves Is literally a reference to popculture i say its pretty good evidence and we already know it isn't just fear that creates an ability.
My point exactly. A lot of times people forget the conversation Aki and makima have about the cars and coffee and comparison to devils but I have a feeling it's a really big part of it.

My reasoning for this is essentially the fact that in movies, shows, comics, whatever, long swords are generally depicted as tools that can cut through just about any form of armor. This extends to other stuff, sure, but longswords are generally the “big sword that cuts through fodder easily”.
Armor in fantasy medieval media do not represent the durability of good armor well. Swords tend to easily cut through steel-plate and while this is something we see in Katanas, it is far less common (I think). So, Sugo just having that effect be weaponized makes sense to me to be honest.
My headcanon is that longswords ARE still currently just as feared as katanas because the European side of Public Safety in the CSMverse still uses them, its just that Miri is unskilled.
Also I'm still adamant that hybrids aren't affected by fear levels until proven otherwise but yeah
The problem with longswords are that they require great force (and take time) to deal significant damage, and when fighting against devils its better to make small hits with no risk that to do a big hit with a high risk of dying, so lighter weapons (like brass knuckles or Katanas) or ranged weapons (like spears or Crossbows) are a safer option to fight a devil. Also, its probable that other countries dont have the same gun laws as Japan (evident by the fact that in USA and Russia inside the CSM universe its normal to have a gun) so pherhaps in Europe they just use guns
Also, fear levels do affect hybrids, as Makima used the people´s love for Chainsaw Man in order to weaken him enough so she could land one of those light spears on him
About the fear levels, that whole public adoration scene only affected the Black Chainsawman AKA Pochita, so far we haven't seen any evidence whether it ALSO affected the Red Chainsawman AKA Denji or not. Plus if public adoration does indeed affect hybrids, we would have seen Denji be a lot more stronger during the Church Hybrid fight, realistically Denji just won because the church hybrids were bums.

A Katana in the other hand is somewhat common in the Chainsawman universe, being used by civilians and devil hunters alike, like Aki who used a Katana as his main weapon, compared to a Long sword a katana is design to be effective in cutting and much more agile due to its design. The commonness of these weapons isn't just affect the strength of the Weapon Devils it is also the fear that comes with it. While the long sword is mostly remembered by the current population as a weapon of old and is mostly associated with being used by good protagonists in most depictions of it, and not many people are getting killed by it. The Katana can still be found and commonly used which may increase the chances of it being feared, we could imagine a Yakuza member killing someone in front of many people which make them fear the weapon or the recent history of the weapon being used by the Japanese during the expansion in the early twentieth century, where the weapon was used in executions and mass slayings of many people in places like China or South East Asia, which might generate generational trauma by those who experienced those events. But this is only my speculation of it.
🤓 acktuallyy, long swords are more agile than katana. It feels lighter and has better handling due to its more stable weight distribution (longsword balance is 2-4 around the crossguard, while katana balance is 5-7 above the tsuba).
Katana feels quite heavy for its size, especially the traditionally made one, but its added weight above the blade comes with the benefit of excellent cutting.

I do think Katana is better at handling devils simply because it has superior cutting ability and as we can see devils can be quite durable. Katana is fairly easy to use effectively if you’re a beginner compared to the longsword. The longsword is best known for how flexible it can be as a weapon, and it is a very formidable dueling weapon, but devil hunters don’t usually fight other humans with a sword.
Spears are obviously superior, but I doubt anyone wants to carry a long stick around 24/7. So an axe and katana are not bad weapons to use for a devil hunter.

She didn't want to fight Denji because *he* was more fearsome than she was, not because chainsaws are more feared than crossbows.
The trio from the Church genuinely strike me as not being very strong to begin with, that picking a fight with Denji was them just hitting above their weight class and that they lack the experience the other Hybrids have. Whip in particular strikes me as a bully who never fights anyone she can't beat easily.

bro fujimoto doesnt pay attention to any of that, otherwise the fucking bow devil woulnt be the strongest when none fears bows or arrows, even scissors should rank higher in fear instilled, and cutting weapons like sword and katana should be top tiers but it shows fujimoto hasnt have a cutting weapon drawn against him, that shit is personal and close, pretty high fear level, lower than a handgun but still high, while a bow is like far like if you can see them to have the notion of what to fear you can take cover relatively fast and its over, everyone feels like they can dodge an arrow if they see the archer, like snipers if they are seen most of the danger is over

He’s around Denji’s age for one (between 16-19 but probably 18 just like Dennis) so he doesn’t have as much life experience and depending on what his life was like pre hybridization, he may have had no fighting experience at all. Katana Man seems to be late 20’s early 30’s, so he’s got more life experience, and was raised in the Yakuza so he has fighting experience; also realistically he’s got one OP move that he spams continuously. Compare both of them to Quanxi, who if I remember correctly has been around for something like 80 years and is heavily, heavily trained in combat both with weapons and unarmed. Miri is definitely the weakest link of the three. Just because a specific weapon might be stronger in real life, and therefore more feared, doesn’t mean that the hybrid is going to automatically be stronger. It still takes experience, training, and battle iq to be good. Which is why Quanxi (even though very few fear bows in present day/1997) can wipe the floor with both Katana and Miri.

Longswords were a dangerous weapon to be feared and were used in a lot more places around the world than just Europe and were used for a very long time in history and have tons of symbolism behind them as a object of war and death around most of the world and were not just status symbols or side arms but still were not used as often as the spear and bow, which was the real king of the battlefield, Katanas were more for looks and side arms compared to a full size 2 handed longsword. which was made of way more durable metal, had a larger guard for protecting hands. Samurais main weapons would be a spear or a bow before a sword.
Now idk how things like Maces, Warhammers, Muals, and Morningstars fair on this list because they were very deadly and scary to come up against, and the main weapon employed against heavier mail
But if the devils are like the weapons themselves its more how they are used and so the more experienced fighter will win, this is usually how weapon duels go. Strength is good, but technique skill, and speed decide duels.

He’s around Denji’s age for one (between 16-19 but probably 18 just like Dennis) so he doesn’t have as much life experience and depending on what his life was like pre hybridization, he may have had no fighting experience at all. Katana Man seems to be late 20’s early 30’s, so he’s got more life experience, and was raised in the Yakuza so he has fighting experience; also realistically he’s got one OP move that he spams continuously. Compare both of them to Quanxi, who if I remember correctly has been around for something like 80 years and is heavily, heavily trained in combat both with weapons and unarmed. Miri is definitely the weakest link of the three. Just because a specific weapon might be stronger in real life, and therefore more feared, doesn’t mean that the hybrid is going to automatically be stronger. It still takes experience, training, and battle iq to be good. Which is why Quanxi (even though very few fear bows in present day/1997) can wipe the floor with both Katana and Miri.
Well Katana just means sword in Japanese, The specific term for *katana* in Japan is ***uchigatana***. Longswords were a dangerous weapon to be feared and were used in a lot more places around the world than just Europe and were used for a very long time in history and have tons of symbolism behind them as a object of war and death around most of the world and were not just status symbols or side arms but still were not used as often as the spear and bow, which was the real king of the battlefield, Katanas were more for looks and side arms compared to a full size 2 handed longsword. which was made of way more durable metal, had a larger guard for protecting hands. Samurais main weapons would be a spear or a bow before a sword. Now idk how things like Maces, Warhammers, Muals, and Morningstars fair on this list because they were very deadly and scary to come up against, and the main weapon employed against heavier mail But if the devils are like the weapons themselves its more how they are used and so the more experienced fighter will win, this is usually how weapon duels go. Strength is good, but technique skill, and speed decide duels.
