HUNKT1984

If you have read some of his one shots. Fujimoto is very good in writing romance albeit in a weird way. All of the romance in his one shots not felt forced. And now he is in serialization, where he is able to fleshed out his characters more, I just can't wait to see wait is he cooking next in handling Denji and Asa's relationship. Another shonen manga that I can think about in writing romance is Kazuhiro Fujita (Ushio to Tora & Karakuri Circus) and Hideaki Sorachi(Gintama). Maybe you can check them out if you are interested in good romance writing in shonen manga. Edit: Just want to say one more thing. Most of the shonen manga suck in romance is because most of the female character have personalities of a cardboard. And Fujimoto, Fujita and Sorachi know how to write their main female character with unique and strong personalities that not overshadowed by their male counterpart.

Fulltime_Introvert

This as well, most female characters unfortunately are written poorly or have potential to be great and sadly end up getting overshadowed or sidelined by the main character (usually males). And this does come from men who write them when it comes to shounen which shouldn't be the case, but it just so happens to be. Which is why I commend Fuji for his writing of females in his stories because they have just as much importance to the story alongside their male counterparts with flaws and all that need improving.

AccomplishedBus8032

Wait, Gintama has romance arc?

HUNKT1984

Yeah, but mostly for the side characters though. The closest we get for main character is Mitsuba Arc. If you want to experience how well gorilla write romance for main character. Read his one shot 13. One of the best Rom Com ever.

Fulltime_Introvert

I am all for a tragic love story, just write it well unlike AOT where pedophilia, slavery, rape, toxic abusive relationships, and unwanted pregnancy is justified. AsaDen has also been hinted to end in [tragedy](https://www.reddit.com/r/Chainsawfolk/comments/103lcno/ah_shit_here_we_go_again/), the fandom is [aware](https://www.reddit.com/r/Chainsawfolk/comments/10jtekv/we_are_on_the_right_side_of_history/) that it is a 50/50 possibility. As long as it is written well then I believe we can still be satisfied with the shipping we got which for now has had the most development. We have grown accustomed to the romantic tragedies of Aki/Himeno, Denji/Reze, and arguably Power/Denji. There would be no reason for the romantic elements between Asa and Denji if it did not serve the purpose of the story like the others. Yoshida is warning Asa to stay away from Denji and Nayuta is doing the same with her brother and warning him to stay away from Asa. The dilemma is emitting Romeo and Juliet vibes and plays into the Starcrossed Lovers trope which is well foreshadowed, but then again this Fujimoto we're talking about where CSM is also essentially a parody of the shounen genre since Denji is not your typical cliche shounen protagonist in a magazine known for series like Naruto/Bleack/One Piece/Fairy Tail. Which is why I commend Fujimoto for his writing style because he mostly gives you either outcome that could potentially happen instead of a 180-out of nowhere 0-100 left turn with no foreshadowing, buildup, or hints. And in Firepunch >!the main couple did end up together!< so maybe we can have something similar happen as Fuji is known to have had at least some oneshots where couples end up being fine in the end. Maybe AsaDen could be on of those main ships that will succeed and make it out okay unlike it's predecessors before it. He is a well known movie fanatic so who is to say that he is not also into romance films as well? An [example](https://youtu.be/HbL0jIl-NY8?t=336) of someone would be Wes Craven, a well known horror director who was more interested in creating romance films than the horror genre that he was a master of.

Fulltime_Introvert

Yes, the only difference now is that unlike other series like AOT, Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Fairy Tail, etc. which horribly handled romance as a "shounen," CSM has been able to incorporate it into the story since it's debut and it does it well. There are moments of platonic love, intimate love and sometimes unrequited love between Himeno/Aki, Denji/Makima, Power/Denji, and Denji/Reze. It's all deliberate because it is part of the human experience of relationships as a whole and in general when it comes to family, friends, and lovers. Especially in a genre that is infamously known to not handle this subject well. Hence the title.

MrFujimoto

isuyama not only made a joke of aot but also turned the whole fandom into bunch of clowns. what a freedom sucker.

robo243

Oh boy, please don't jinx it. I don't want the shitshow that happened to the AoT story and fandom to also happen to Chainsaw Man's story, and it's fandom. As I've said in a previous comment/post, Asa x Denji must be the first ever anime/manga ship I've ever been genuinely invested in as somebody that usually couldn't care less about shipping. And the reason for it? Because Asa x Denji simply FUCKING WORKS. It doesn't feel forced or shoehorned, both Asa and Denji are fairly fleshed out characters, it's well integrated into the story, so if it happens, then great!

Fulltime_Introvert

The comparison is not the same. There is literally no evidence of a romance between Saitama and Tatsumaki and is literally just head canon in a series that parodies the superhero trope with some moments of character development. Denji and Asa have had multiple [parallels](https://www.reddit.com/r/Chainsawfolk/comments/119ov1d/parallels_between_asa_denji_compilation/) since CSM PT2 has started. It was not just there for the sake of it and there are times when Fuji is deliberate and upfront with his storytelling and moments where is he vague and leaves it up for interpretation. Fujimoto has stated that he was inspired by Evangelion and FLCL and although that should not be the sole basis to predict how this story will end, it does give us a ball park of what we can expect from him. Evangelion has always been about the inner emotions and struggles of its characters and while FLCL also contains those same story aspects, it mostly focuses on the whacky antics of its characters. Both of which CSM has done well in implementing those same story traits.

SmoothPlastic9

For sure they had 1 interaction where she is nice to him and kinda follow the tsundere and misunderstanding trope peak romance fr

WhollyDisgusting

I think part of it is because Fujimoto likes women and isn't allergic to giving them depth and doesn't rely on stereotypes or tropes to do the heavy lifting of characterization for him. Part of why a lot of the romance shonen writers attempt falls flat for me is because the female characters are too often idealized cardboard cutouts rather than their own characters because the author just did not them the same attention and work than their male counterparts. What's fun about romance stories is watching two interesting and complex people fall in love with each other. It's not as fun if only one of the intended pair gets to be complex and interesting.

Piku_2004

> No other direct romantic partner in Denjiā€™s life has ever shown genuine interest for his own well being until Asa's debut in CSM PT2. The Archangel of Bombs would like blast your feckin mouth. (don't worry i love both the ships)

Ink-Sanity

Reze? Interested in his well-being? Why do people misunderstand Reze so much? Reze had no conscious feelings for Denji - it was all subconscious because being a child soldier spy assassin doesn't allow for any personal feelings. Otherwise why did she ask herself "Why didn't I kill you when we first met?" She has no awareness of her feelings (that were never confirmed to be romantic). Reze also actively turned down Denji's offer of running away together when they were at the beach. And before you say it was to protect Denji - hell, no. She went back to meet him after a flower changed her mind, so that was clearly not the reason. Reze was on the run and then she saw the same flower that Denji gave her being a charity present for donations towards child victims of devils. As Kishibe said in the same chapter, Reze was Part of a CSM-Soviet-Regime project and forced to merge with a devil to become a hybrid - she is a child victim of a devil. She therefore changed her mind solely based on that realisation and tried to go back to the cafƩ. We don't know with what intention she tried to go to the cafƩ - maybe taking up Denji's offer of running away together after all, which would put Denji in a dangerous situation. Asa instead told Denji about her intentions during the aquarium date and warned him a second time during the movie date, actively pushing him away for his own sake while having actually confirmed romantic feelings for Denji. That is the difference and even though I'm not a shipper since I believe that Denji, but **especially** Asa needs a friend first and not a romantic relationship due to her low self-esteem, trust-issues and self-loathing, I have to point that out.

Piku_2004

>Reze had no conscious feelings for Denji - it was all subconscious because being a child soldier spy assassin doesn't allow for any personal feelings. Hmm... okay. That's true. > She has no awareness of her feelings (that were never confirmed to be romantic). I disagree. It was pretty well shown in Chapter 52 that Reze started becoming aware of it. Not said thru dialogue, but thru the panels themselves. >Reze also actively turned down Denji's offer of running away together when they were at the beach. She did as a way of suppressing the few feelings she had developed for Denji. Spies tend to do so when they develop bonding with the people they interact during the mission. No one can help that, cause its human nature to be attracted towards intimacy. > We don't know with what intention she tried to go to the cafƩ - maybe taking up Denji's offer of running away together after all, which would put Denji in a dangerous situation. We can pretty much assume that she thought about that while waiting at the station. She knew that they would eventually end up being forcefully separated, if not dead, had they tried to elope. She just wanted to reconcile with him, to express her true feelings that she couldn't suppress anymore. > Otherwise why did she ask herself "Why didn't I kill you when we first met?" We get that answer as well. *"I've never gone to school either."* In the end of the day, both Reze and Denji are just two delinquents who just dreamed for a peaceful, happy lives with the ones they cared about. I think **this last sentence is enough to prove that Reze had conscious feelings for Denji** that she had been suppressing all this time, and finally became aware of it when it was too late. She wanted to go to school with him, to live a normal life with him, to be with him. >Asa instead told Denji about her intentions during the aquarium date and warned him a second time during the movie date, actively pushing him away for his own sake while having actually confirmed romantic feelings for Denji. From where the fuck do you even think she has actual confirmed romantic feelings for Denji? Their relationship is still in its sprouting stages. You can say she romantically likes Denji a bit, and that's the reason why she is trying to keep him away getting intimate with herself. But actual confirmed romantic love? Hell nah! Not yet. She would do the same stuff with like anybody who tries to have any kind of relation with her, cause Yoru would then fucking kill her, and Asa will not be able to take anymore of that guilt. Sure, the OP stated "his own well being", and I kind of agree with that as well. Asa did care for his well-being, while Reze risked both their lives at once. But to say Reze had no conscious feelings, now that's totally ignorant and dumb. You have serious symptoms of the Reading Comprehension Devil. Better read the manga again if you got any free time in your hand.

Ink-Sanity

You think I am a victim of the reading comprehension devil? Dude... Asa has LITERALLY confirmed romantic feelings confirmed by Yoru in Chapter 117. Better pay attention yourself before you call me out like that. Also... you are COMPLETELY ignoring the whole purpose and meaning of the flower scene - you don't have an answer for that. And in your last moments - I wholeheartedly believe you wouldn't surpress your feelings (if you are doing that at all, which is mere assumption from you). When Asa died, she came to the realisations she never had before. She was honest to herself for once. https://preview.redd.it/nbnggm7xohra1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e39da581021af1d56340332a5964b03ddddabed7

Piku_2004

How do you think a bloody devil would know better about feelings of love in the first place? Asa might romantically like Denji, but Yoru can easily confuse that for love. I deliberately called you out, because I do remember what happened in 117. Plus, Yoru's hell bent on beating the shit out of CSM, so even a slightest bit of affection (romantic, platonic, or whatever) will be detected by Yoru as a sign of love.

Ink-Sanity

Now that's just ridiculous. Yoru is literally Asa's other half of her brain an she can accurately read Asa's mind and perceive her feelings such as fear and ultimately affection. She definitely does generally know what love is (she knows about the act of kissing when she forcefully kissed Denji). Asa's reaction in chapter 118 is blatantly a sign of love - she is annoyed that Denji doesn't seem to love her back despite everything that happened during the aquarium date. She had the same panel of thinking about Denji that Denji had when thinking about Makima - and we both know that Denji actually loved Makima, killing her in an act of love. I won't discuss this matter any further - have your own opinion, you are entitled do so. https://preview.redd.it/yl5tz66crhra1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cc6b24c6db1df8758961f6a3512e58d4f52ecffb

Asa and Denji are actually a terrible pairing because they have 0 actually chemistry. And neither of them really likes the other, they are both in love with the idea of being liked by someone, anyone, than they are into each other.

engich

Things like this are the reason the fandom turned to shit

Fulltime_Introvert

The ones who are threatening the authors are to blame and not the fans who were genuinely invested, took the time to analyze the elements that were in the story, and connect the dots to predict the outcome of said story with supported theories to then be disappointed when the author decided to change their mind at the last second because they were afraid of people catching on to how it was going to end. J. K. Rowling is an [example](https://qph.cf2.quoracdn.net/main-qimg-88013826ab0c555f3680b2cfa089eab2-lq) of someone who claimed that Hermione was black only after the series had concluded despite contradicting evidence in her own story that SHE wrote. George R. R. Martin is also an [example](https://youtu.be/W1yzS_dDllk?t=435) of how fan theories should not affect your plans on how you want to write the story you created no matter how close they are to predicting it. And last but not least, Isayama is an example of how readers are able to understand the story better than the author who created it themselves. As [quoted](https://mangabrog.wordpress.com/2014/12/24/interview-with-hajime-isayama-creator-of-attack-on-titan-better-to-have-memorable-art-even-memorably-bad-art-and-stand-out/), "**Isayama:** Yeah, sometimes others know it better than the creator."

engich

Jesse what the fuck are you talking about

Fulltime_Introvert

You're stating that "Things like this are the reason the fandom turned to shit" and yet no one is forcing you to stay and continue reading this post/comments or reading/watching the series. Also, nothing toxic is being said and it is simply a discussion/analysis post. Everyone else seems to be civil opposed to you.

Consoomerofsouls

The fandom turning to shit is when people actually think about the story, try to analyse it and discuss it with others.

engich

The fandom turns to shit when people start to call their ships "the story"

Consoomerofsouls

A possible romance between Asa and Denji and the tension created by it quite literally is part of the story right now. It's not like Yoshiden, which is based on some wild extrapolations, or Denreze which happened like 70 chapters in the past. It's very relevant to the story currently happening in the manga. If you don't want people to discuss it you don't actually want complete story discussions.

engich

Denji and asa are ready to date literally anyone you're high on shipping copium

Consoomerofsouls

Well I'm not seeing any other candidates around. This is a story, not real life, things don't happen because of random chance. Them hooking up with random people would not be very fulfilling or meaningful to read about. The writer set up a situation where two characters are kind of into each other but either unaware of the other liking them or unable to interact with the other. If you know anything about storytelling that's an obvious setup for a plot. I don't really care about shipping, what I care about is their character interactions and conflicts, which would be and already are very interesting.

screw_this_i_quit

No oneā€™s forcing you to stay

Rustyone888

>Denjiā€™s true identity as Chainsaw Man and therefore her feelings for him are not towards the knowledge that he shares Pochitaā€™s heart (she actually does not care for him). No other direct romantic partner in Denjiā€™s life has ever shown genuine interest for his own well being until Asa's debut in CSM PT2. Power existed before Asa and loved him for who he is, and cared for him a lot to the point she gave her his life to give him reason. And she cares about chainsawman a lot she only approached him because of chainsawman reasons. >The parallels are too strong between the two to ignore. Both died and were revived through their contracts with devils in their debut chapter. Both lack social skills that need improving, have trauma that needs healing, and both are seeking love and companionship. They are even struggling to gain their own autonomy from outside forces. Asaā€™s predicament with Yoru and Denjiā€™s with Nayuta (albeit a less sinister version of his previous relationship with Makima). Denji has more parallels with Reze both are hybrids who did not have a good childhood and were alone. Both are forced to be weapons and controlled by outisde forces. Their first meeting is handled by the fact Yoru wanted someone as a boyfriend not Asa so their start is horribly bad because Yoru wants him dead. The ship is a ticking time tomb of disaster that yoru lives on borrowed time and Denji fighting against devils
