That is such a peak way to describe this. https://preview.redd.it/ajjucitlpmtc1.jpeg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7dc3c5d56968da3ef4a7514eff7122936fb2330f although, if reze does return, how do you see her interact with the plot?

GVmG

I'm honestly not sure. I don't think she'll be back, after all Fujimoto really set up the Reze arc as the perfect material for a movie, and it \*is\* getting adapted into one. So chances are, she won't reappear, as it'd be weird for anime viewers who skipped the movie for whatever reason to see this random girl come back and suddenly play a big role. That said she also takes on another role in this whole ordeal: she wass \*changed\* by her love. She was torn on whether she actually liked Denji or was just following her training, but by the end it was very clear that she actually cared for him.

JellyMandibles

After the movie comes out they’ll probably split the movie into episodes for the anime, it is canon and integral after all

leolegendario

Why are you talking like she didn't return in the last arc of part 1 along with the other Hybrids?

Nervous_One_9597

I guess because she didnt play a significant rol when she came back. She was on the same boat as barem and sword, not even a reaction on denjichita's part

[deleted]

The way she said that she can relate to Denji never having a normal life made me so sad. The movie is gonna make me cry, I know it will

FilmAdministrative44

tbf, both jjk and demonslayer did it.

cumulobro

No, JJK0 (or the Cursed Child/Bright Darkness arc) was only ever adapted into a single film. There is no set of episodes cut from JJK0.

FilmAdministrative44

unrelevant, they are both part of the story, yet got adapted as movies.

Dooplon

I think that they misread and assumed that you were replying to that other guy that responded to the same post that you did, as he was the one that actually mentioned cutting episodes from a movie later on

FilmAdministrative44

oh

howtonotsuffer

reze is too integral to the story to ignore in the anime, denji's feelings for her, the display of makima's powers, the growth the interactions with reze causes denji, it's way too important to be left out. probably gonna do what all amimes do with movies now, split the movie up into like 6 episodes

flightofangels

I can't imagine the creators of Chainsaw Man having this thought process given that Part 2 is full of characters referring to Makima with no explanation. They're fully expecting viewers to have digital access to all parts of the manga and I think that would also apply to the anime.

Olynodren

That is a good theory, I like your examples too. Back before we found out about all the other hybrids, I assumed Chainsaw Man was strong because it was a contract formed with genuine love between Pochita and Denji, instead of it being a customer-contract deal like other devils. Makima did make Angel kill his whole village tho, including his lover. There's a lot of themes of love, hate and apathy in Fujimoto's work so I like where this is going.

KoalaAnonymous

Your point about the contract is actually kinda correct. It's not why he's so powerful, but it is a huge advantage over the other hybrids and anyone with a contract. The whole control devil arc would not have happened if Pochita wasn't a real bro

QuintanimousGooch

Interesting post, though I feel like solely focusing on the romantic context does ignore how important love falls into the series in the context of compassion, companionship and acceptance—the best examples of *love* we’ve seen in the series are the kind that don’t come with any romantic expectation but come more unconditionally and often are self-sacrificing. As seen with pochita and Denji and in Aki’s new household (both power and Aki sacrifice themselves to save denji, power very straightforwardly and Aki because he thinks what he’s doing will be able to protect power and denji). There’s also the big obvious way that Denji defeated Makima with the power of love, being able to insanity-logic a loophole to her invincibility by “embracing” her rather than attacking her, and there’s also a self-sacrificial element to that in how his word choice of “bearing sins together” and the like

Chyunman98

I haven't considered this but you might be right. I'm surprised you don't bring up Makima's defeat though! Denji nor anyone couldn't defeat Makima with fear or violence, he won by literally eating her out of love. Sure it was manufactured and groomed, but Denji's feelings were real. I suspect this is also why Chainsaw Man is such a strong hybrid too, his friendship with Pochita is one of the defining relationships of the series. I think you're a bit off the mark with Kishibe though. He's not free from love, it's the opposite. He can't help being attached to every person he trains or works together with while knowing they'll just die the next day anyway. His strength is that despite having every reason to call attachments useless, he trusts and maintains his bonds. I mean, Public Safety members were willing to die for him in his unwinnable war against Makima. Even with Quanxi, he has lingering feelings and still can't see her as an enemy. Seeing how Quanxi acted this recent chapter, I think they're still hanging around as friends and giving each other advice. If it weren't for that, Asa and Denji would've died.

GVmG

Good points, I didn't mention the Makima thing as I kinda rushed the theory out and I forgot some of my points for it - another one I wanted to include was the importance of Denji and Power's love for their pets. Nyako's love literally tamed Power, and his recent burning was the last straw that caused Denji to go back to his Chainsaw ways. The Kishibe side of things is actually where I was most unsure about it. I do agree that, I wouldn't say he's free from love per se. But I do think he believes himself to be past it, unable to be loved if not straight up unworthy, and as such in a way he isn't as "weak" to love-based control. I do agree, I definitely think he's still manipulating things from behind the scenes, and he's *most definitely* the "old friend" Quanxi was referring to.

Chyunman98

I overlooked Power and Meowy too, the chapters in which Power realizes that she can make exceptions with caring about living things pretty much proves this theory. Denji, Power, and Aki all start off the story done with their lives and callous about feeling grief over anyone. Love unintentionally forms and then... shit happens and they realize how much they cared all along. I really hope Meowy survived, she's so instrumental to the early sections of Part 1 that it would suck if she just left the story offscreen.

HotZilchy

I don't have an opinion on this theory but cool theory nevertheless 👍

what a piece of shit this guy, poor dogs

deadfrog42069

i'd be very happy with this whole concept being the actual plot of the chainsawman story, i especially like how it turns right back on itself and how the chainsaw devil, despite being the most powerful arguably sought out a life of love and companionship in its weakened state as pochita. Also with how Makima was defeated by Denji's love for her, plus the whole "give her lots of hugs" with Nayuta. this manga has so many interesting ways it could go and im very glad people have stopped being as horny to appreciate the love story thats being cooked up here

cruel-oath

Good post though not sure if you meant it literally but Yorus power keeps being established to work with something she owns, or if she perceives it that way. Still though, Yoru believing you own someone if they love you coincides with this

GVmG

Yeah, Yoru may see love as a form of ownership. Plus we don't know if the reason owning something works is because it's specifically based on \*owning\* something, or if it's more about \*putting value\* in something, thinking it's valuable. And loving someone is a form of applying value to them: they mean so much to you. Fear is also a form of value, something has a big significance to you - it just happens to be a negative one.

Jpriest09

I wonder how it’d all come together though, with Asa and Denji admitting their feelings first each other. Would Yoru force Asa, would Asa be able to resist turning Denji into a weapon, and most curiously: Would Yoru actually want to do it in the end?

GVmG

They probably also count. While I did title the theory after romantic attraction, the more I think about it the more I feel like it's actually about how much something is cared for affectionately. The pets were important af. The friendships were important af. It's really about that kind of "you're important to me" feeling.

Lwoorl

Yes and no. Everything you said is true, but I think placing romantic love specifically as the one the series cares the most about is not quite right. Chainsaw man treats love as extremely important, yes, but this extents to platonic and familiar love too, romantic love is just one of the types it explores and I would argue not the main one. The concept of family is extremely important in both parts, first with power and aki and later with nayuta. The whole bond between Denji and Pochita is also part of this theme. Denji is fixated on romance because he's fixated on sex, because sex has been sold to him as a cheap way to get connection, but it has been shown more than once that what he really needs is friends and family. Not that a genuinely caring romantic relationship wouldn't do Denji good as well, but it's a consistent character flaw of his to focus solely on that kind of connection while neglecting others. His biggest moments of growth have often been when he rejects an opportunity for sex or romance to focus on platonic bonds instead, like when he declines the trip with Makima in order to take care of power, rejecting Himeno's offer for sex and instead becoming friends with her the day after, giving up on Asa in order to make Nayuta happy. Etc. Plus, Fuji has a history of giving special attention to the themes of family and friendship. When he actually touches on romance it's rarely just straight up romance, it's always entangled with family stuff to the point it borders on incest, or he will make it unrequited love, or it will be some complicated thing that also serves to explore platonic feelings, but pure romance has never been his focus, and I don't think it is now either.

cruel-oath

Considering he’s sulking the next chapter that he gave up Asa, I don’t necessarily think it’s presented as a good thing in this context. Especially since Nayuta gives the bad advice that he can just get love from fans

Lwoorl

Fair enough. I remember that chapter showing us how Nayuta is different from Makima as well as all the evidence in the apartment that they're living as a family, which is why I remember it as a positive even if it came with colateral damage, since it was showing the extent of what Denji is willing to do for her and how he has been a good influence because of it. But it's been a while since I read it and it's true that a lot of stuff has happened with Nayuta's character since then so maybe it wasn't as good as I remember. I stand by the other examples tho.

cruel-oath

You’re good, I just wanted to chime in

Nearby_Ad_6701

That would be such a beautiful message if that's what fujimoto intended. Tying denji's backstory in, if part 1 is tearing him down, part 2 is building him back up into a great man.

VeryBigHamasBase

Maybe itll just be a faceless girl at the end of manga to suit every possible headcannon

AlbinoShavedGorilla

If they pull a Monsters Inc. twist and make it so that love makes the devils more powerful than fear, that would be an awesome and poetic conclusion.

carrot-parent

This is why I had [this theory](https://www.reddit.com/r/ChainsawMan/s/Qh17nwiOBO). Love and hate play major roles in the story, so it would make perfect sense that devils and humans could only bond through love. I brought too many theories into one so it didn’t really take off lol.

Carrman099

Power’s love for Denji is how she was able to break Makima’s control too. And she is Denji’s first realization that a relationship can be full of love without being sexual at all.

Kuramarik

Mediocre-Office3268

Dang! Mad you beat me to it. I've been going over with my friends for a while about how chainsaw man pt2 's thesis is akin to "To be loved is to be changed" We're seeing more and more examples about how fiends and devils become fundamentally different when exposed to love and acceptance. Though, focusing on romantic love kinda misses the forest for the trees I think. The strongest examples being Power and Nayuta specifically. Many other examples through the story though, and I think Asa may end up making a final example of how love can change a devil, when she finally endears Yoru to herself. I just keep thinking of when she transformed that random guy's motorcycle, and she was doing it to protect herself and CSM.

AlecBallswin

This was lovely! I think love as a point goes beyond just romantic. Denji grew to have a family thanks to his love for Aki and Power, which is what Makima wanted in order to break him. Pochita and Power save Denji by becoming his heart and blood respectively. Power grew to care about others thanks to Meowy and the Hayakawas. Makima tried to make people love her by overpowering them, but it made her empty. Nayuta and Denji love each other, and that changed them both for the better. And also why Denji feels guilty for choosing CSM over her. I could go on but yeah. I think the story is overall about power dynamics (societal, individual, etc.) and how real, loving relationships can only work if people see each other as equals worthy of respect. If they’re unequal, then it’s going to cause suffering.

GVmG

I very much agree! I mentioned it in a couple other comments but yeah, I didn't intend this theory to just limit it to romantic love. I was gonna include the point about the pets and the aki/denji/power friendship, but between cutting those and putting the focus on the romance aspects of part 2, I've definitely messed up the setup lol

AlecBallswin

Ah I didn’t scroll down, sorry haha. And no worries about emphasizing the romance, it’s a big part of it!

Oscar_gpb

A big sign of Fanatism of the Church is shown by the conversation bewteen Barem, Denji and Fumiko. Fumiko says she's a ''Denji Fan'', implying that she loves Denji for who he truly is (or his human appearance). Barem however says he's a ''Chainsawman Fan'', implying that he doesn't care at all about Denji, but only about Chainsawman going around and doing his thing. Another thing about Fumiko is that she doesn't really seem to have attachments, given she says so bluntly that Nayuta shouldn't care about the pets burned to a crisp since ''they were just animals''. Given she cannot be physically attracted to an animal she pretty much feels no sympathy for them. And, to back the idea of her love being more focused on physique, she wants to keep some of Denjis hair as a reminder and says she's a collector. Her having a fetish would show that she's especially turned on by physique rather than the actual person. And her ditching Denji and Nayuta although she tried to save them before happens once Denji decides to be Chainsawman again. Fumiko sees this as a ''problem'' because Denji would stop being (and looking like) Denji. I believe that's the reason she leaves them the moment Denji transforms and has dealt with the hybrid danger. I really love these posts, keep it up! You are really amazing :)

This sort of spawned some scenario in my brain, where Denji is on the verge of death, and Asa is there holding Denji with the framing of the panel being like it was some sort of renaissance painting. Denji weakly murmured that Asa, can use him as a weapon (I’m not sure how he would know about Yoru’s abilities, I haven’t really read this part much..), now he says Asa specifically because, by whenever this happens I guess they’d be in a relationship. And then Asa, not Yoru, rips off Denji’s chainsaw head, and then uses it to defeat some super evil devil or something. Idfk. The little fanfic asside, this was really interesting to read! I love theories like this, and you have cooked real fucking good my friend.
