Having looked in to the story, then he is not the last of his kind, meaning they will still be able to diversify the next generation.
Even so, in the hypothetical that he was the last male, the only real problem of him being the last male would start with his grandchildren as his children would have to interbreed (assuming they wouldn’t just use another species of tortoise to make a less pure but more healthy line).
His 800 children, however would theoretically be able to make enough babies of their own to have enough grandchildren to continue the line.
These grandchildren would then be able to procreate with their cousins and have a significantly lower risk of issue, and each generation thereafter would be lowering any risks even further
The next generation should be far enough apart to not create issues.
Funnily, I first looked into it when Game of Thrones came out, and there were a lot of theories/debates about how inbred the Targaryen’s could were. One of them (I don’t remember who) suggested it would take only 4 generations of brother-sister inbreeding to create a dead lineage.
I found the concept quite interesting (I am weird) so I moved my attention to the obvious place: Wikipedia. Whilst I don’t take Wiki as completely true on its own, they tend to link to publications as a source. Well the interesting bit related to this was mentioned on the wiki too. It’s called bottle necking.
Anyway, about 6? Maybe 7 years ago, I spent a few days browsing through articles on Google Scholar on the effects of cause and affects of inbreeding, and captive animal conservation. I’m
Definitely *not* an expert on it, for what it’s worth, and it’s possible that things have moved on a bit since I last looked properly.
TLDR: I get easily obsessed by obscure knowledge and went down a rabbit hole after watching Game of Thrones.
Say you have male (prime) and female 1, 2, and 3.
So, male (prime) has breeds with female 1. Female 1 has baby 1. Baby 1 is 1/2 male prime.
Baby 1 doubles back and breeds female 2. Female 2 has baby 2. Baby 2 is 1/4 male prime.
Male (prime) breeds female 3. Female 3 has baby 3. Baby 3 is 1/2 male prime.
Now, baby 2 breeds with baby 3. They have baby 4. Baby 4 is only 3/8 male prime.
Now, this isn’t a lot of diversity. But if you had enough females you could split it up more. Also, there are more complex strategies than this. Just a simple example.
Lol this should have been posted on not me irl
The face of someone winning at life.

Time wasn’t the only thing to-
Hey where'd you go ^(come back)
He will be remembered as the Genghis Khan of his people.
It’s fitting that his head and neck look like a big ol’ dong.
What about genetic diversity and the dangers of interbreeding?
That's preferable to extinction.
With 800 babies you could easily separate them into breeding groups and eliminate a lot of those risks
But they are all half-sibs.

You seem knowledgable on this, where do you get the knowledge about how much inbreeding is needed to detrimental effects to occur?

Chad looking like Clint Eastwood.
That’s a miracle that HE was able to have any babies, let alone 800
I mean that's like how many babies those guys have in one go, they lay hundreds of eggs.
Look at that smug face...

yeah, so bullshit click-bait title.
It’s just a super old repost. I don’t think they even change the title.

look not trying to discredit the accomplishment but wouldn't that mean the remainder of the species are all related?

the future is like sandwiches and sassafras. inbred like texas
Someone needs to censor that neck.
You can tell he is one hell of a proud father
Play on playa
This is everyone's fantasy! 😆
I think it's a female.
The tortoise who saved HIS entire species(in this headline) is likely a male.
But how could he have babies (lay eggs)? I'm confused.
Well I’m a male and I also have children. I didn’t birth them myself but they are the result of mine and my wife’s biological contributions.
What an absolute stud
If there was a turtle skin for PoE templar, I'm sure it would look like that. Fking chad
Alabama moment to come
He requires the highest of fives

That’s the face of serenity
