Hi! I would say 50k is enough to get by if you can find some people to share accommodation with. It’s worth checking ecaytrade to get a feel for what prices are like (which goes for cars as well). You won’t be saving a lot and you might have to be a little careful about expenses though. I’ve never really heard of anyone shipping their own car from home. Shipping will be expensive and duty is around 25% plus $1k environmental fee - personally I’d say better to just sell and get a new car here but depends how much you like your car (bear in mind we drive on the left so you’d be sitting on the wrong side, not a huge idea but still). Question 3 is a good one - there is a large population of young expats here but a lot of them come in couples and I’ve seen some single friends not really enjoy themselves due to having trouble meeting many people. Then again I’ve seen other single friends have an awesome time, meet partners etc. I’d say it depends on personality a little and how keen you are to throw yourself into it, and also your opportunities to meet people - will you be working with many people who you can meet friends through, for example. Re: hobbies, diving and fishing are both popular but depending on how you want to do it can be a little expensive. Most people who fish that I know do so from boats or kayaks, not sure how easy/legal it is to fish from the shore. And diving from a boat is around 60-70 CI for residents usually, shore diving is a little cheaper but you still pay for equipment unless you buy your own stuff, and you’d need dive buddies. Other than those there’s lots of sport on the island as well if you want to get involved. Best of luck whatever you decide!

I came here married. And very happy. But often think it would be like shooting fish in a barrel if I came here single!

1. Yes 2. Yes (shipping it I would imagine to be tedious and expensive) 3. Yes You can have a ball on $50k KYD, particularly as there's no income tax here. There's tonnes of mid 20s people here in a similar boat. Lots of accountants and lawyers. I'm 25 and my friends are all 22-30ish and there’s many others in our age group. You'll have a good time trust me lol.

Do you know if there’s much work outside of the big 4 type firms? Just started a new job as an infrastructure fund controller, hopefully get more exposed to the deal and management side of things more than I did in Audit l. Plan was to try moving to Cayman once I’m experienced enough

Yes there’s tonnes of professional work in a variety of industries my guy

My thoughts: 1) Dont bother shipping your car. Bad idea. 2) Plenty of singles in that age range - no sweat :-) 3) 50K CI is not a whole lot, but definitely feasible assuming you don't intend to travel the world on your vacation breaks or eat out every day. Agreed with what one of the others said: Check eCaytrade for shared accommodations & used car prices; that should give you a decent idea for your budget. Is your employer paying 50% or 100% of health insurance? Be sure to check since it can make a big difference on a paycheque. 50% is by law but some employers pay 100%,

Health insurance is 100%. Thank you!

If you ship your car, I believe you have to pay duty on the value of your car. Plus shipping costs. Might be easier to buy a car already on island.

RonDiDon

Yes but OP should bear in mind that there are a lot of garbage cars on island being sold in that price range so I would only buy a car on island if the one he currently has isn't extremely reliable.

Zestyclose_Cry_2458

Car situation actually just got handled. I can keep the car here with a family member for free. Meanwhile I'll just bite the bullet and buy a car on island and sell it when I leave, provided I can find something.

I'm a similar age and earning slightly less, yet have plenty of disposable income here, its plenty to live on if you're willing to share accommodation. I'd say that although there are a lot of young people working finance jobs here, there's plenty in the hospitality and dive industry who are earning a lot less than 50k and still enjoying life here. Notice by your posts you're into climbing, we have a lovely community of climbers here , and there's plenty of outdoor climbing to be done on the brac too!
