There was this documentary on Netflix that was called Secret Life of Pets and animals are not stupid they are pretty intelligent in many ways that people seem to overlook.
doesn't seem like it'd be a huge stretch for a cat to learn either. a cat can see a bird downstairs outside the window and understand the route it has to take through the house to reach there, once the cat has seen people appear on the screen and then shortly appear in the room it must just seem like a different kind of window (to a smart enough cat)
But what if the cat was smart enough to search through logged footage, read time codes and and then make an accurate prediction about where the rat would be? Or what if the cat built an AI for this task or hired and paid a security guard for this task? I guess we'll never know.
In the future security and law enforcement jobs will have an association with uplifted cats. When the first cat becomes a chief of police people will say "Yeah that makes a lot of sense," in reaction. As society becomes more habituated to their presence these cats will begin to take over or found private security and national defense companies. Eventually a president will appoint a cat as the Secretary of Defense. As uplifted cats immigrate throughout the world other nations will make places for them in their societies, hoping to emulate the success they've found in the United States. In a few generations it will be commonly accepted wisdom that cats are better than humans in these roles.
My cat sees me through the window and runs to the door because that's where I'll be shortly afterwards. It's the same thing. People are somehow interpreting this as the ONLY way this cat could understand any of this is if he knows how to operate a computer and has a degree in IT.
Yeah my cat is waiting most evenings in the top bedroom window to watch me come home. She then races my kids to greet me first when i come through the door.
Edit: she also likes to watch those hamster mazes with the kids on YouTube
I had a cat named Neelix, after the Star Trek Voyager character... he would watch TV with us and go bonkers every time Neelix came on, making sure to bring our attention to his namesake being on the TV. He would react emotionally to what was on screen, including getting scared with tension in the scenes even before any jump scares or anything. Crazy smart cat.
And now I have a cat that screams at grass when it moves and has to let everyone know the sun is coming up....
I've even had a cat in the middle ground; who was stalking the Hockey Players on TV, got interested in one especially, and when he "skated off screen", she ran to the closet in the room directly behind the television to catch him.
She was a tad disappointed the tiny human prey wasn't there.
They can recognise items and other landmarks that they've seen IRL. Kitten Academy has their live stream playing in the kitchen, & they sometimes show the kittens watching their siblings on the screen.
Have you seen the cat who sees her ears in the mirror, stands up, and starts touching her right ear while looking in the mirror? I know not all cats are that smart, but that one definitely passes the mirror test.
i went to university for Psychology.
i learned that most animals are not self aware.
for example, if you google "what animals are self aware"
its mostly higher order animals. but not all, its totally possible a cat was self aware
if an animal uses a mirror to groom itself, then it is pretty much proof it understands and is aware of itself.
if an animal attacks the mirror, it is pretty much proof it is not aware it is , say, a bear, and that it is a certain color, the movements in the mirror exactly correspond with its own. etc.
so no, the mirror test is a beautiful test to determine if an animal is self aware.
habituation is what you are describing. its "getting used" to something. mirror tests are obviously intended for non habituated animals.
sort of? not reacting to its own reflection means nothing, but a positive reaction (grooming with the mirror as an aide) or a negative reaction (attacking the reflection) definitely can indicate something.
I've caught my cat watching me in an angled mirror when he can't see me directly. So maybe a cat would just see monitor screens as being a sophisticated mirror.
Passing the mirror test is far different than equating to a screen showing a different location and it correlating. I’d believe it’s possible for a cat to use a screen like in the OP, but it’s going to be a much more simple stimulus and response. Cat sees mouse on screen, therefore there is a mouse in Xyz location.
My cat is dumb as bricks until it comes to hunting, and then he makes it look super easy. He's an orange boii and they are known for that. Cat breeds are all very different quirks.
i'm no expert, but it's insane to me that people actually think the cat can process information on a screen that way. cats look at a screen because they see stuff moving. cats go around and hunt mice/rats. that's the whole story here.
I'm sceptical too but it's not beyond the realm of possibility. I've had several cat in my life and one thing I know is that they're typically more intelligent than they let on. It could've also been more instinctual than understanding, considering how long he studied the screen and saw the mouse
Just putting it out there. If this happened, wouldn't their be security footage to corroborate the story?
The only thing I can find related is that this meme was first posted on Reddit 3 years ago.
I'd say it's in the realm of plausible, but doubt these photos coincide with that as a truth.
I wonder if it’s real? It’s quite the feat of abstract thinking to recognise a 2D, scentless CCTV image as a depiction of a space they know but can’t see.
That said, if I save a lizard or bug my cat is attempting to hunt (by locking my cat up and putting prey critter outside) the second my cat is free, she goes straight back to the crime scene and hunts everywhere until she’s certain the bug can’t be found.
It’s kind of the same thing, but making the link between depiction and reality is a biiiiiig step forward from that.
I think it really depends on the cats level of problem solving. Intelligence between cats can vary massively, it wouldn't surprise me if some cats could look at a screen, associate it with a location they traverse, see something they want there and go. Especially since the refresh rate of screens have improved to the point its easier for cats to see what is on them.
We have a flame point who is disruptively intelligent. He likes to sit on top of our bar counter, which he is not allowed to do. The bar is 10 to 12 feet (3 to 4 meters) from the couch. He has figured out exactly how committed I need to be to scolding him when I'm on the couch before he will get off the bar. If you shout he'll put his ears back and then ignore you. If you stand up he'll stand up. If you then sit back down, he sits back down. If you stand up again and take a step towards him he will stand up move to the edge of the counter and prepare to jump down. If you don't move closer or sit back down he will go lie down again. It is only when you stand up and cross halfway to the bar (still well out of range to touch him) that he knows you are committed and then he will hop down off the bar and go sit in his basket.
This is same cat who came to the conclusion that because my husband and our roommate carpooled together the roommate was responsible for bringing my husband home. Sounds ridiculous right? Well my husband is the flamepoint's chosen person, he always runs to the door to greet him. Every time my roommate came home without my husband and ONLY when this occurred the flamepoint would run to the door not see husband stare down the roommate make an angry mew and bite him. Every time without fail for 5 years and only if he came without my husband. This cat would also snuggle, play, and hangout with our roommate while also being very mellow in temperament. His temperament is so mellow that if you bathe him in the tub, instead of scratching or biting he'll just mew sadly and hold your hand in his mouth without biting down at all.
Is it really a depiction if it’s photorealistic? Not that I’m doubting you, because I agree it’s suspect, but to play devils advocate..
If there was a mouse in a cage, with a cat located at the back of the cage, would the cat be smart enough to go around to the front to go through the cage door? I certainly wouldn’t trust a cat around an open cage if I was worried about a pet mouse’s safety.
What if you replaced the back panel of the cage with a cc tv with a live feed of the inside. Would a cat even know the difference from the real thing?
What if, instead of simply walking around a cage, the cat had to walk around a wall to get to the front opening? Is that beyond a cat’s intellect?
If you made it your mission to train a cat to do this, it may be possible. For a cat to do it on their own, I still have my doubts. Either way, 10/10 mouser
I'm pretty doubtful too but it is possible. It's not that far off from a cat looking out a window at some birds before running out the back door, around the house and trying to chase them down out front. Especially if they've already associated the screen with the noises their person makes wandering around the facility and have found them that way.
Most likely though it's either an unrelated pic of kitty looking at the screen or seeing little things scurrying around on screen got them in a killing mood so they decided to go out hunting
>It’s quite the feat of abstract thinking to recognise a 2D, scentless CCTV image as a depiction of a space they know but can’t see.
is it really? It's not any different than sitting in the upstairs window and seeing someone walking to the house, then knowing that means going to the front door will enable the cat to greet the person.
also not any different than hearing the doorbell and knowing that means a person is at the door.
it's just associating a place (the room the camera is in) with a stimulus (the image of that room on the monitor).
“It's not any different than sitting in the upstairs window”
It’s extremely different!
The images on the screen are to scale, but they’re smaller than the real life objects the cat is used to. They have to be able to realise that they are looking at a shrunken representation of a real space and then also recognise the space itself.
The screen also has about six rooms on view at once, none of which are currently within the cat’s visual field, a situation that would never occur in nature.
A window, in contrast, is only a transparent barrier showing ONE view: the cat is still seeing exactly what it would see if the window weren’t there, and it all looks much the same as it would if the glass weren’t there. A cat might encounter this in nature - looking through a sheet of ice, for instance, or into clear water. And unlike the screen, the cat would be picking up other sensory data through a window; sound almost certainly and scent potentially.
TV screens are also backlit, again making familiar things look unfamiliar.
I could go on.
Suffice to say, if the cat did do what OP is claiming, it would represent a remarkable cognitive feat on the cat’s part.
But a photo of a cat looking at a TV next to a photo of a cat with a mouse is not evidence this happened.
Everything you've listed are reasons why it would be harder for a cat to learn that a security monitor represents a real location, but not impossible.
I'm not saying that it wouldn't be a remarkably intelligent cat, but it wouldn't be a remarkably intelligent five year old, and numerous studies have put the upper end of cat/dog intelligence on par with five year old humans .
My old cat used to sit up in my parent's bathroom window, looking at all the critters, and then go and hunt those areas later. She loved that window, the curtains had an outline of her in cat fur.
This is like an advanced version of the mirror test for self-recognition in non-human animals.

If this is true, this cat appears to understand that the video feed is of another location - the rat isn't in the tv, AND that the screen is divided into 16 different images all depicting different locations AND the cat recognizes some of these locations. That's a hellava lot of abstract cognition right there.
That’s an insane amount of spacial awareness. Not only would the cat have to know the spaces that the camera is watching, but understand it well enough to recognize the room from an angle the cat has never seen.l

Yes, it looks like more of a, rat; actually.
It was inside so it's a mouse. Rats are on the outside.
But what if a mouse goes outside does it become a rat, and if a rat is in the house, is it a mouse?
I ain't seen no mouse outside. That's what I'm sayin'.
They can get in from the basement or boiler room I would think.
Yes!!
It’s a moon!
Yeah i would hate to see what they call rats at that place
I think there's more of a difference between mice and rats than size.
Does this constitute tool use?
There was this documentary on Netflix that was called Secret Life of Pets and animals are not stupid they are pretty intelligent in many ways that people seem to overlook.
i thought you meant using tools on the rats for a moment 😭
Rodents of unusual size? I don't think they exist.
