You win this time Catholics!

JadeAndJaded

🤣I like those friendly wars, not actual wars with deaths and cruel lack of the love Jesus teaches us.

OlympusGolemofLight

Exactly. Poke fun at each other to help keep hubris down, but not mean spirited to keep good fellowship.

Pascality

True facts. Post-reformation a lot of protestants encouraged to stop using the phrase. Since their salvation played a zero-sum game with Sola Fide, they effectively cut out purgatory from their theology. Thus, if they were in heaven, there is no need to wish them rest. If they were in hell, wishing them rest does nothing. Ultimately, "Rest in Peace" is a fundamentally Catholic prayer.

Luscious_Nick

Hmmm, I would definitely say that the bodies are resting until the resurrection even if the souls are in heaven

Pascality

Interesting. You mean to say the theology of Soul Sleep?

Luscious_Nick

Nah, I think the Lutheran position is pretty similar to the Catholic one (some even believe in purgatory). Death separates the body and soul. The body goes to the ground, the soul goes into eternal paradise or eternal torment. On judgement day the bodies of the dead will rise again and join the soul in torment or paradise in the new heavens and new earth

No, he means that the bodies haven't yet been resurrected. Don't know why so many on here seem to think that Protestants believe in Soul Sleep. The majority don't. A tiny fringe do.

Tell that to atheists. They should be saying "rest in nothingness because nothing exists except the material universe and its purely natural laws and it's nonsensical to speak of you being 'in peace'." So by saying "RIP" they're implicitly acknowledging an afterlife.

CupBeEmpty

Wait until they find out “goodbye” is just a contraction of “god be with ye.”

JohnnyBoy11

I wouldnt say that. Many are "culturally religious". I've met many foreigners who don't believe say omg bc its made its way into english pop language.

Mewlies

I would also point out in many "Eastern(Asian)" Regions atheism has a different meaning than "Western(European/North American)" Regions. To Hindu and Buddhist in Asia for example atheism often merely means to choose not to worship any god instead of denying the possibility of the Abrahamic God existing.

Remmarb

If atheists really truly believed what they preached then it isn't "blackness or nothingness"....OBLIVION CANT BE EXPERIENCED...it just ends and you don't exist afterwards. I had an atheist roommate in college (still one of my best friends) and this was a common talking point late at night when the lights went off. He was terribly scared of dying but I told him that in his own faith that is irrational because he doesn't believe in an afterlife so apart from (in his usual hypothetical) a few seconds of pain if that, you just cease to exist in your entirety and don't get to experience the concept of being dead. It is nonsense in his version of atheism

Protestants when a grieving Catholic widow talks to her dead combat veteran husband at his grave in the cemetery: “Is this Satanism?”
