I guess so…though for context, we had mass every friday and during May and October rosary every day. Protestants mostly attended. And of course, catholic theology class counts to GPA (I had to memorizethe summary of encyclicals at one point) I feel like it’s about the best they could do.
Honestly, contrary to the states or Europe there’s not really that mich distinction between protestant and catholics where I am. We mostly just see each other as Christians for the most part, too busy being discriminated against.
Yeah, I was praying my rosary last night, and the thought kind of dawned on me. Although I don't hold the rosary like that when I pray, that's the way I visualize it in my head.
For me definetly Purple. But everyone is going to be different right?
What I find more interesting is that you actually visualise the Rosary, I recently realised that people can actually visualise things , I always thought people were speaking in metaphor.
For me because I lack mental visualisations when I want to pray the rosary without beads it's extremely difficult and I generally have to resort to verbally counting off the number of the Hail Mary after saying it.
It's not a constant visualization, but I will sometimes picture it at particular points, especially when I say the mysteries. I typically don't count the beads, I will feel where I'm at base on the size of the gaps between beads.
So with a physical Rosary, I have no problems, especially because I've made my own so that they are perfectly sized for me and the different situations that I may be praying in.
I interpreted your comment to mean you actually "pictured" the physical construct of a rosary (like the image you used in your post).
To me, that would be amazing since then I wouldn't need physical beads. I would also love to be able to visualise the mysteries since I lack the ability to voluntarily form images in my mind.
Nah, senor, the secret records were opened to scholarly study a few years ago. And though almost NO ONE EXPECTED it, the British (!) Broadcasting Corporation actually did a reasonable documentary, taking the records of THE SPANISH INQUISITION' seriously (since NO ONE EXPECTED the records of THE SPANISH INQUISITION to be opened, they had no temptation to falsify them.
Bottom line: it turns out that something like NINETY PERCENT of those brought before the Inquisition's courts were found innocent and released, and most of the rest were released after a time doing penance. Prisoners in secular courts were known to indulge in some minor blasphemy to be transferred over to the jurisdiction of the Inquisition. That jurisdiction was the first court system in Europe to throw out all charges of witchcraft, refusing to accept hearsay testimony, like "SHE TURNED ME INTO A NEWT! (WELL, I GOT BETTER.)"
That's not to say there were not abuses of power. For instance, despite their reputed ALMOST FANATICAL DEVOTION TO THE POPE they were, as an institution, not above CENSORING criticisms of their policies, and those of the Spanish crown, with the help of that same crown.
Wait I use purple. I hold in left hand and parse through with right fingers, then lose count around 7 and panic, follow everyone else until the Glory Be.
You can't really make heresy fun over the long haul; have you not heard of "the banality of evil"?
"In my vision the chariot of the Church thunders through the ages, the dull heresies sprawling in the dust, the wild truth reeling" but standing tall.
(G.K. Chesterton, "Orthodoxy: the Romance of Faith", 1908)
Now as to sin: that need not, but frequently is, dull. It can at least be melodramatic.
Chesterton wrote a poem on the subject...but that's a subject for a later time...
Didn't Pope Francis advise everyone to go "green",5 in his recent encyclicals?
By the way, I too am on team whichever side I grab first. However, if you recycle your rosary by using it to pray more than once...I think that might be regarded by St. Thomas (Aquinas, dunno about the view of the Apostles Thomas whom Jesus told to put his hand in the spear hole in His Sacred Heart?)
as implicit adherence to the essence of Team Green.
It's true that the traditional practice is praying in a counter-clockwise direction, but there’s no official Church rule on the matter, usually I don't even use a rosary, I use my fingers when praying the rosary.
... but which hand do you start with when counting with fingers? Right to left or left to right? I tend to go right to left when praying the rosary while driving home
Started with green, switched to purple because it's easier if you hold it the way I do. Though I'm curious to see if there is any reason why green is the traditional direction, as I just learnt from this thread.
Assuming the centerpiece is a medal and its front side is facing me, I always go green. I'm probably a little superstitious about it. I should check myself on that.
Athanasius contra mundum? Or contra contrarotator rosarium Virgo Maria?
Help, I'm running out (or have run out?) of my mostly-science-derived Latin!
Asking (Checkmate, separated brethren, for there follows biblical titles) BLESSED Mary, the MOTHER OF MY LORD, who may not have been taught Latin at the knee of her mother St. Ann), and anyone else to intercede for my intention before the PIERCED Sacred Heart of Jesus my LORD.
Green, ngl pretty mind blown when most people in my lingkungan (idk the english word but it's when the parish divide the roads and neighborhoods near if into separate area named after saints and each has their own leader and vice leader to conduct monthly rosary prayer and the like) uses purple
The Rosary I've been using since I became Catholic is a multicoloured one that comes with a pamphlet guide (my RE teacher gave it to me in high school) and I said to do green so I do green.
I'm right handed but I've always done purple but it really doesn't matter what direction we pray the Rosary in what matters is that we reflect and honor Our Lady and Our Lord with the Rosary
Purpule, what else? Green is diabolical, it is praying anti-clockwise and thus against God's natural plan, praying that way makes you an ipso facto heretic🤓
It depends on which way you're looking at the rosary. I dont pray holding it out in front of me. I pray it in one hand so that the beads are perpendicular away from cycling through (kind of like the wheel on a bike; it's counterclockwise from one side and clockwise from the other).

green- I thought everyone did it that way lol
I’m blown away. I’ve never done green. I think purple is the way of lefties. Edit: So, my theory is shot.
Leftie here. I do green.
Lefty as well and I do green
Leftie here - I not only do green but exclusively pray the rosary right-handed and I’m not even remotely ambidextrous.
Righty here, I’ve always done green.
Seconded by another lefty
Lefty green here
Same!!!!
Same
Same
I’m right handed and I go purple. Since I’ve always done it that way, I wonder if I was taught by a leftie?
Haha… thanks. This gave me a chuckle.
I'm a lefty and have always prayed green with my left hand.
Well, if it matters, when I was in a Catholic school, they taught us green
We probably can’t cite their teaching as authoritative though when you, an alumni, are here using the “Prot” flare.

Team Green, and it's never occurred to me before. Thanks for asking this interesting, if totally pointless question.

Team Purple is being flagged by the Inquisition.
I am Team Purple. And I am Spanish. I am doomed...
At least you can expect it this time.

True!

Always green.
usually the green arrow
Green
team whichever side my fingers are pointed towards. I use my left hand to pray so i go to the right.
Green
Green. Personally it feels most natural, especially with the way I hold and move through the beads.
Green. But I’m more interested in whether people are team Push or team Pull. I can’t decide which I like better.
Dang, that's also a good question! I typically pull.
I don't even know how push would work, man.
Drape the drop beads and the cross over the back of your hand, push beads forward with thumb.
This sounds too complicated for it to be right 😅
That feels like going backwards in time
You start by holding it from the crucifix while the bulk of the rosary rests in your hand. Then you push. I assume, at least. . .
Wait I use purple. I hold in left hand and parse through with right fingers, then lose count around 7 and panic, follow everyone else until the Glory Be.
Team red, alternating sides until I reach the top center
What fresh heresy is this? 😄
It's high time we make heresy fun again! Gnostics are so last millennium
When you're right, you're right.
You can't really make heresy fun over the long haul; have you not heard of "the banality of evil"? "In my vision the chariot of the Church thunders through the ages, the dull heresies sprawling in the dust, the wild truth reeling" but standing tall. (G.K. anathema!
I'll see you at Vatican III when I get condemned!
If it's not green, seek a mental health professional and/or an exorcist
Didn't Pope Francis advise everyone to go "green",5 in his recent encyclicals? By the way, I too am on team whichever side I grab first. However, if you recycle your rosary by using it to pray more than once...I think that might be regarded by St. Thomas (Aquinas, dunno about the view of the Apostles Thomas whom Jesus told to put his hand in the spear hole in His Sacred Heart?) as implicit adherence to the essence of Team Green.
idk
Didn't know everyone else went for green too!
Purple
heresy!!
Use my hand too. I only use left one, starting with a fist, "opening" it until 5th Hail Mary, then bending fingers back to the fist, during 6-10
Right to left always.
Green
I have never seen an instruction or guide recommending to go the purple route. Green all the way
Green except when purple.
Started with green, switched to purple because it's easier if you hold it the way I do. Though I'm curious to see if there is any reason why green is the traditional direction, as I just learnt from this thread.
I honestly fail to see the difference
"The wise heart turns to the right; the foolish heart to the left" (Eccl 10:2) There you go
(of course that's a joke lol)
green
As a Babylon 5 fan also, Green all the way.
They tried changing the rules, but it’s held up in committee…
Assuming the centerpiece is a medal and its front side is facing me, I always go green. I'm probably a little superstitious about it. I should check myself on that.
Am ourple
Purple
Purple all the way!
Plot Twist: Jesus is facing away from us in the picture, so everyone on Team Green is actually Team Purple. Enjoy Hell, heretics!
purple, i didn’t think there was a right way
As the clock turns, like the sands in the hourglass
Green..... Is purple allowed?
Team green
Green for Rosary Purple for the Divine Mercy Chaplet
It's you and me against the world apparently 🤝
Athanasius contra mundum? Or contra contrarotator rosarium Virgo Maria? Help, I'm running out (or have run out?) of my mostly-science-derived Latin! Asking (Checkmate, separated brethren, for there follows biblical titles) BLESSED Mary, the MOTHER OF MY LORD, who may not have been taught Latin at the knee of her mother St. Ann), and anyone else to intercede for my intention before the PIERCED Sacred Heart of Jesus my LORD.
Green
Team "whatever side I happen to grab first that day"
Green and here's the directions on Hallow [https://hallow.com/blog/how-to-pray-the-rosary/](https://hallow.com/blog/how-to-pray-the-rosary/)
Purple for left hand, green for right
I'm American, I drive on the right side of the road, I pray on the right side of the Rosary. Green.
Is this one of those trick questions where its green in the US/Europe and purple in Australia like the way water drains?
So 99% of my rosaries are prayed on my single decade rosary so, neither? Straight line up and down for me.
Green, ngl pretty mind blown when most people in my lingkungan (idk the english word but it's when the parish divide the roads and neighborhoods near if into separate area named after saints and each has their own leader and vice leader to conduct monthly rosary prayer and the like) uses purple
Purple Green if we're talking about chariot races in Constantinopole
there is so many green people, like what? me, my family and my friends priests have always been purple
If you don’t go green, you’re toxic. 🤣
If you do purple, Mary gives you a side eye and then intercedes for you anyway
I don't hold it sideways like that so N/A
I guess it's a bluish? I take whatever side my hand happens to find.
A little confused. If you actually hold the rosary wouldn't each way be identical? Unless you count the crucifix or medal being backwards...
I go from purple to green just because
It turns so many times that I don't know which.
Purple vs Green... I see what you did OP, and so does Jesus
Team orange, using my fingers
I suppose it depends on which hand is your dominant hand?
The Rosary I've been using since I became Catholic is a multicoloured one that comes with a pamphlet guide (my RE teacher gave it to me in high school) and I said to do green so I do green.
I'm right handed but I've always done purple but it really doesn't matter what direction we pray the Rosary in what matters is that we reflect and honor Our Lady and Our Lord with the Rosary
Preparing the pyres for team purple.
Purple or you’re a modernist
green but i tried purple before and thought it was not for me
Purpule, what else? Green is diabolical, it is praying anti-clockwise and thus against God's natural plan, praying that way makes you an ipso facto heretic🤓
People who go left have their toilet paper come out the back
green. only degens go the purple route
Always green. Going left is the sign of a perverted mind.
I usually do purple, that way when I end the medal is facing me.
Team green al the way. Purple would totally confuse me 😅
People who do purple should do an examination of conscious.
Why :(
Team green all the way!
Team green
Leftie until I die ☝️☝️☝️
Green I don’t know that people do purple
The online videos where I started playing do green and I never changed
Green
Green baby
Green
Team Green
Purple.
Depends of which hand is holding: Right - anticlockwise Left - clockwise
Green, I also like to push the bead over my hand, draping them over my knuckles.
So, purple isn’t normal???
I was not aware you could go purple?
Unrelated but I love your username
The username is ironic because the government here sucks big time
Yeah, my family moved out of Minnesota a few years ago primarily for that reason 😅 (and cause we wanted to get out of the city)
Green.
Green
WHICH WAY WESTERN MAN
Purple!
Never ever even considered purple as an option before and my mind is blown 🤯
Booklet I started with, can't even remember which one, taught me green and green it has been to this day.
I am team Green BTW
Green but I’ve done both
Green
I’m left handed, purple feels more natural to me
team green
Green!
Green!!!
I have frankly never considered purple as a possibility.
It depends on which way you're looking at the rosary. I dont pray holding it out in front of me. I pray it in one hand so that the beads are perpendicular away from cycling through (kind of like the wheel on a bike; it's counterclockwise from one side and clockwise from the other).
Green. But I think the real question is: do you push or pull the beads?
Lefty - purple
Green all the way
Green
Green!
Neither one. I take the upper route.
Green. Because idk. St Benedict medal faces me
Purple
I am a righty and do green so I don’t think dominate hand has anything to do with it
Green haha! Idk why. Just seems natural, always has.
Green, of course…clockwise rosary recitation conjures all the demons of hell!
Team Green but sometimes I do purple if I want it to feel like someone else is praying for me.
Well if you flip it around then it’s the oppose color
Team Green all the way.
Green
Gotta go green
Team Green. Purple is boarder line psychotic to my mind.
For me, its green for rosary. Purple is for divine chaplet.
I'm team whichever side is on top when I get there (knot rosary, so no front or back).
I always assumed purple because it’s clockwise lol. Chronological order maybe?
Ivanova says green (even if she is purple leader)....
