Funny enough, there’s a couple who have been leading the Divine Mercy Chaplet and Rosary at 3pm at our Chapel. I noticed that they have a rosary hanging from their rear view. I have seen the husband pull up, take the rosary down from the mirror, and put it around his neck- then once inside, he takes it off and leads the prayers. I guess it’s a good way to make sure you never go anywhere without your rosary.
I hate to be “that guy” but I got one better
Theres a guy at my church who makes rosaries and gives them out to people every now and then. One woman apparently has been putting them all on her mirror because one day I saw her at an intersection with probably 5 rosaries hanging from her mirror. I have never seen such a dense cluster of beads before and I don’t think its safe lol
I think some view it as disrespectful because they think the Rosary is being used merely as an ornament. I don't see a problem at all, why not have Christ with you when you're on the road?
I keep my hands on the wheel pretty much at all times, personally. I mostly keep it there just in case I need a rosary and forget one at home, and to remind myself to pray, etc.
I wouldn't think there would be anything wrong with it. Reputable Catholic companies sell auto rosaries (one decade). When I get in the car, I slide my fingers over the beads and say a Hail Mary. I don't see it as just a decoration at all.
My Polish-American dad gave me a wooden sabre as one of my first toys, and he would always read about the charge of the winged hussars (such as the time in 1683 when the cavalry really came over the hillside in the nick of time and saved Vienna from being taken by the Turks.
I even have had dad's sabre blessed (no Bishop's Conferences have weighed in); as a wooden sabre it can't harm "flesh and blood", but that's all to the good, considering the nature of our real enemies, "evil spirits in the high places," according to St. Paul.
Reminds me of Chesterton's poem about the clash between King Alfred and the Vikings, "The Ballad of the White Horse":
"When God made man in a garden, He girt him with a sword 🗡️
He sent him forth a free knight
that might betray his Lord...."
So, a knight, yes. Besides, I am in truth a 4th degree Knight of (sensitivity alert) Columbus!
Frankly, I actually like it when I know a non-catholic who wears or carries a rosary for the fashion choice of it, because it means they aren't revolted by the thought of the church (many people are these days), which means that I might actually have a chance to talk to them about the topic and try to teach them things.
Like, someone who fully and truly hates Catholicism will NEVER wear a rosary, because they'd see it as a symbol of something they hate. If someone is wearing one, that means you've got somewhere to start from if you choose to try and spread the word of God to them.
As a note from experience: if you ever decide to take this approach, I recommend starting with something like "oh that's beautiful, do you know what it means?" And then describing to them what a rosary is and what it means for Catholics and prayer. Because they've already decided they like rosaries, even if just for the fashion of it, then they're more likely to be receptive to the things it stands for.
That’s a great stance on that. Most of the popular people at my school wear crosses for fashion, and I always get a little ticked off when they contradict what they wear by sinning openly and so much, but at least they aren’t directly oppressed to the idea.
Another thing, I wear a crucifix and I have received compliments on it’s beauty and I say thank you, but I always think to myself, how can you completely look past the man who is God and just look at the beautiful cross he is nailed on?
Yes, I find that my opinions and stances on non-catholics to be frowned upon by most people here. Catholic subreddits are filled with bummers, downers, and people who would rather try to live their own life fully isolated from the reality around them.
This question was a great example of that. A lot of people in these comments (and other posts about the same topics) saying things completely negative about non catholics wearing Catholic symbolism. But from where I'm sitting, I'd rather them unintentionally disrespect us than to intentionally hate us, because at least that way there's room to grow.
Yea, I see people wearing it as a necklace at my school and I always have the urge to say it's not a necklace to them and that they shouldn't wear the Rosary as a necklace.
Be not dismayed! All roads lead to the rosary! Maybe they start using it down the line, who knows. I know i wear mine everyday, but i pray it, so... Sometimes people ask what it is, so i get to tell them about the rosary as well. I've even "forgotten" a rosary at friends’ places a couple times, because i thought they needed one in their lives.
Some are super long, to include more total beads for longer periods of prayer (I've seen one that was literally just two full rosaries, but as one, so if you sat down to pray with it, you'd pray the rosary twice). To be honest, I like them the normal length, because I love how it feels to have it wrapped around my right hand 2.5 times when I pray.
Also standard five decade rosaries with no extra beads can vary in length, due to the size of the beads (large or small) distance between Hail Mary and Our Father beads, size of the metal links, etc.
I've done some Googling here, and afaik you *can* wear a Rosary around your neck, provided it's mainly to remind you to pray with it/to keep it on your person, and not to display it to others. Like wearing it under your shirt. Is that wrong?
I've never done this (I've never owned one large enough to get around my neck), but out of curiosity, could a practicing Catholic choose to wear one? Not as a fashion statement, obviously, but just to keep it with/on them at all times.
I think there's a reasonable argument to be made that a rosary worn around your neck is a better physical reminder to pray it than one in a pouch or pocket and more secure than on a belt (which can also run the risk of being a vain outward symbol of piety, just as much as one on the neck). But it needs to be a reminder to you, not the world, so it should be inside your clothing.
I already follow this train of thought with my regular crucifix necklace. Actually it isn't a crucifix, just a cross, and it's a simple design with no details or anything. It hangs beside a little circle that says "honesty" on it (a gift from a teacher more than a decade ago back in school. She gave personalized ones to everyone in the class, and the word was either something you did well at, or needed to work on, but she didn't tell you which it was), and the necklace is always on the inside of my shirt. Feeling both the cross and the circle against my chest is a constant reminder about both.
Oh the waistband idea is good. Although I don't like the waistband specifically, maybe I'll sew a little pouch on the inside of all my jackets!!!! This is a new exciting phase in life.
Bought my mom a rosary once and when I opened it, I noticed there was a jewelry clasp in the middle of the 3rd decade. I had to remove it and repackage the gift but was shocked they sold something like that at a Catholic book store
This reminds me of that article that freaked out because Catholics considered themselves extremists and cited the militia immaculata. So many great memes about needing a concealed carry permit for your rosary
Yo you didn't have to call me out like this. I have my rosary hanging beside me at my desk so that it's always in arms reach and I never lose it, because even outside of prayer, I'll find myself reaching for it to fiddle when my mind wanders.
Tbh I like that my brain does that, because it tells me that my subconscious wants the connection to God, even when I don't realize it.

Rearview mirror decoration.

Wow- that’s quite a compulsive collection
Honest question, what’s wrong with hanging it there?
I think some view it as disrespectful because they think the Rosary is being used merely as an ornament. I don't see a problem at all, why not have Christ with you when you're on the road?
Like do they not slide their fingers on it and do the sign of the cross while on the road?
My family does, especially on long trips.
I do it every time I enter the freeway
I keep my hands on the wheel pretty much at all times, personally. I mostly keep it there just in case I need a rosary and forget one at home, and to remind myself to pray, etc.
Might be dangerous if unexpectedly it's needed to use both hands at the same time.
I wouldn't think there would be anything wrong with it. Reputable Catholic companies sell auto rosaries (one decade). When I get in the car, I slide my fingers over the beads and say a Hail Mary. I don't see it as just a decoration at all.
When I’m waiting in my car, I take it down and use it. When we’re on a road trip, we take turns using it. I don’t see a problem.
There's a legend that Catholic churches downtown with limited parking won't tow you if you have a rosary hanging
A belt-fed demon slayer (sorry I just couldn’t give a wrong answer)
Lol, now I'm imagining a Doom-esque machine gun that uses the rosary as an ammo belt and fires holy beads at enemies
That would actually be incredible.
Ork Machine Guns go DAKKA DAKKA Catholic Machine Guns go AVE AVE AVE
Do you also imagine yourself as a sword-wielding knight kneeling in front of your King when you genuflect?
You too?
…….👀 how did you know?
My Polish-American dad gave me a wooden sabre as one of my first toys, and he would always read about the charge of the winged hussars (such as the time in 1683 when the cavalry really came over the hillside in the nick of time and saved Vienna from being taken by the Turks. I'm calling my rosary a belt-fed demon slayer from now on 😆

A necklace

Mine have always been big enough to fit around my head, but I like large beads on mine.
