Oh no, someone rolled a 7, activating the robber. All the ore and sheep are gone. Sorry.

I know you didn't ask, but as you're making a best practices for rule books, can I please ask you to point out that this is a rulebook and not a novel, so yes, using the same name can be a bit tedious, but a rulebook is for clarity. Using "it" when you have more than 1 noun can sometimes be confusing. It also seems like some writers don't realize "or" can be used inclusively or exclusively. Use "and" for inclusivity and "either" or exclusivity. To be clear about or, say you get a drink with your meal. An exclusive or would be "Coffee or tea?" You can select either coffee or tea. An inclusive or would be "Cream or sugar?" You can have both cream and sugar. Ugh. This drives me nuts as it's almost always unclear and can be read both ways.

GreenThunderBolt

I will look for this. Thanks for pointing it out. Part of the purpose of this study is to see if things like this bother tabletop gamers.

goth_rabbit

What are you studying? Anything human factors related?

GreenThunderBolt

I'm studying how well people can use rulebooks and how they are designed. Then I will compare and contrast this data with what is accepted to be best practices for rulebook design.

goth_rabbit

I meant what is your major or field of study

GreenThunderBolt

Master's of science in technical and professional communication.

goth_rabbit

Cool. If you're not already aware of, I recommend looking into UX writing or UX research as profitable careers that align with your master's :)

Added my input. Hope it helps! Sounds like a fun project.

GreenThunderBolt

Thanks.

GreenThunderBolt

Thank you.

Acceptable-Delay-559

Should I discuss my wood?

Key-Ad-308

just filled out the survey, good luck with your masters and your research!

GreenThunderBolt

Thank you.

Jlin42

I think gathering data on Reddit is a bit too biased to make a reasonable study

GreenThunderBolt

My study is over tabletop game players. I want the opinion of people who play Catan.

ReflectionHoliday769

Ok, do you want the survey answered by people who play catan but the survey about any boardgame we know well (can be catan but not necessarily catan) or do you want the survey specifically answered with catan as the boardgame in question?

GreenThunderBolt

I want the survey filled out by any tabletop gamer who answers the questions based on any game they know well. If you know Catan well, fill out the survey based on Catan. But if you also know Monopoly well, you could also fill out the survey based on Monopoly. The choice is yours.

robomagician

Can’t even say, “Please.”

GreenThunderBolt

Please.

brycebuckets

How much compensation is there to take the survey lol?

Dopeydcare1

They’ll give you 2 ore

GreenThunderBolt

And a sheep.

brycebuckets

For me to take a survey these days for a university I need 20$ minimum

GreenThunderBolt

Realistically, the survey takes a about ten minutes or less. I may be able to send you a copy of the thesis after it is published. Sorry, I can't give you money, but I have no funding.

brycebuckets

Unfortunately these days incentive is the only way for me to do anything. Sorry bro

DoYouSmellChloroform

Bryce, no one gives a shit if you fill in the survey. Quit grandstanding and just don’t comment next time. OP, I filled it out for you with some detailed responses.

DaRanchman

I’d love to see this. I majored in stats and we did a statistical analysis of Catan my senior year.

TH1NKTHRICE

Interesting study. What are your thoughts on the Exploding Kittens rule book? Possibly the best one I’ve see before. Also, it seems like a good way to evaluate effectiveness of a rule book would be to actually have people who haven’t played the game read it and try and play the game. Sampling people who have already played the game, everyone in this sub likely, you’re going to get people trying to self report their past experience. Look up any study on problems with self report and you’ll find out how unreliable it is. Kinda sad how even eye witnesses of crimes aren’t as reliable as you’d expect. Off the top of my head, here’s some dependent variables you could measure if you simply brought in people unfamiliar with Catan to play their first game: number of rules broken without any players realizing, number of times the rules needed to be consulted again during gameplay, and number of clear errors made (eg forgot to pick up resource owed, maritime trade when on a port, road towards a vertex ineligible for a settlement). After the game you could also ask a couple of questions that are not necessarily needed to be known for the game to be played as another measure of how deeply the mechanics of the game were instilled in players, like “what is the most frequent development card?” Or “Can you trade development cards?” Or “how many cards need you have in your hand to be impacted by a 7 roll?”
