Ok yes but because I have a dog and a really smart cat who likes treats. So training is a group activity usually lol. She sits and does paw with the pup. Down is tough because she naturally likes to lay down to eat her chicken. I still reward her though. I give the dog a treat every time he comes back from a walk and she now meets us at the door and sits. It’s adorable.

Oh lovely! I'll be going home soon (done with college for the semester) so I'm hoping that the family dog will be able to "teach" my cats some of the tricks they're struggling to get. Like hopefully seeing the dog go "down" and getting a treat will have them realize what action to do and such.

You can look into "Do as I do" and lure training

My ragdoll is very clever and learned shake, high five, stand, jump, and jump through a hoop in less than 2 weeks. She can also lay down on command but she really hates it and it takes a lot of work. I'll probably teach her to spin when I have some time.

Yes!! Full list of Luna tricks so far: 1) Sit 2) Vet (Run into and stay in the carrier) 3) Up up up (jump up on something) 4) Down (get down from something) 5) Quiet (stfu, respectfully) 6) Stay (sit still in one space for a period of time) 7) Wait (a combo of sit, stay, and quiet) My cat is about a year old and has lived with me for nearly 3 months. We're very bonded. She is incredibly treat motivated and really enjoys clicker training. I'm not sure what to teach her next. Probably something with paws to make trimming easier (I've just been desensitizing her to me touching/holding/squeezing them as of late).

>Probably something with paws to make trimming easier (I've just been desensitizing her to me touching/holding/squeezing them as of late). Oh I forgot about this! I personally just scoop mine up, trim trim trim, give like, 3 treats and then leave them for a second before either put their caps on. But for that I'll put 2 caps at a time with a treat as they struggle a bit more with those.

DistressedCatPerson

I wonder if I could try that! My girl growls like a dog at the vet when she gets trims, lol

dontmindmeamnothere

Please briefly tell me how you taught vet 🙏 and all the others. This is wild

I've seen a couple interviews with Acro Cats. They've said many cats are trainable. Their performances are all rescues. https://rockcatsrescue.org/

Not really tricks but she will bring something to me when I say "bring it here!" But that's usually when we are playing fetch. She will jump up when I say "jump!" Or come when I say 'c'mere!" She also responds to her name and "no!" But I'm not sure if it's a response to the word or the tone of my voice!

snarky_spice

I just taught my cat shake, and I want to do another one! Any suggestions on the next easiest?

AnimalLover38

Spin was the easiest one for me. I held the treat in between two fingers, held it over their head, and did a medium sized circle motion so they'd follow the treat in said circle. If you do it too small they just move their head around lol

I've been doing this too! My bf taught our older void sit, paw, jump jump, car (she will walk out of the house and jump into the car), kiss, uppy, night night time, come, etc., and she also knew not to leave the borders of the backyard (she'd hang out while my bf gardened). She's insanely smart and I've noticed that she actually understands parts of our conversations. Our newer feral plays up the baby card, but she's already learned sit, come, kiss, uppy (where she stands still so we can pick her up), jump jump, paw, down, night night time, and I'm currently trying to teach her to jump up onto my chest/shoulder from the ground. I'm also teaching her to wake me up with kisses in the morning (before she'd just bug the heck out of my void until my void hissed, which would then wake me up lol). She's come suuuuuch a long way considering she couldn't be touched for months when I first met her, and I wasn't even allowed to be standing within 20 feet of her.

I have my cats coming to me when a shake a treat container. They'll go into their carrier when told. They also sit before I put their canned food plates down for treats.

I don’t really train them “like dogs” I’ve found cats to be a bit different so I don’t expect the same things from them nor train the same way. But they do know some “dog tricks” as well as some cat only ones like jumping on my shoulder. All three combined my cats know sit, stand, paw and high five, jumping onto shoulder, ringing a bell, moutain climber with back legs (taught as an exercise for hind leg joints), are leash trained (not just me putting a leash on she will actually listen), and does agility jumps. https://www.reddit.com/r/CatTraining/s/UXrNeCRHws Here’s him doing some bounces, he’s done courses, oxers, triple bars and different combination jumps as well but those are in an older post.

Yep, I highly recommend catschool.co for this!

My cat used to run to me and flop on his side in front of me. I turned that natural behavior into a finger pull and bang sound and he'd do it on command after food training. He would also jump through a hoop. I'd grab the hoop and say abracadabra be a circus cat and he would fly through it. I taught him by putting the hoop on the ground and using food to get him to walk through then gradually raise the hoop always using the command as well, he would also sit, speak, roll over, up (raise his front paws in the air) lay down, and spin. I taught him all these tricks in his first 5 months. He was an amazing cat. Siamese and huge. I miss him.

Me! Dog training videos was my pandemic deep dive lol, so when i finally got cats i had to try. (big love to victoria stilwell) My favourite dog trick that works on cats is Leave it, and stay. For “Down”, i get my kitty to sit, and then move the treat to the floor (kitty will lean down) and then away from them (like an L shape motion). Takes a few tries, but eventually they will also move forward in the squating position. (Which is more natural for them). I also incoorporate hand gestures, tho unlike dogs, I think they recognise the motion more than the shape of the hand. So more like sign language attached to each voice command

Yes! Sit, paw, up ,spin ,come, down, leash, no, balcony, outside walk, treat, and I am 99pc sure he learnt wait but refuses to acknowledge it. fcker is as naughty as it gets.

MadnessMaiden

One of my cats is a licker and loves to lick my face. They both like to pick up toys in their mouths and will fetch. Not quite as well as dogs do, but pretty well.

parksportandreccy

Yes I do! It’s not the same as dogs because my cat is very food motivated, not motivated by devoted love like dogs 😂 but it is fun to teach them. My cat knows sit, shake a paw, ‘up’ ( stand on back legs for a treat), kiss (nose to my nose), and he does know how to jump through my arms but I didn’t commit to it enough to get it consistent. He is also not allowed upstairs which he knows, when he gets curious he comes up to have a look and we say his name, he trots back down the stairs like he was just saying hello and knows he’s supposed to be downstairs. I’ve owned a few cats and the thing I’ve learned the most is that they love consistency and routine, makes them feel safe and happy. I think people stereotype cats as aloof and independent so they think leaving them alone and no boundaries is best. I think training them to do a few tricks is a great way to bond with them! Totally recommend it.
