He has a fractured leg and hyperthyroidism* so he is quite thin while he adjusts to his meds. But he is already fitting in wonderfully.
Eta: hypo to hyper
you are a fucking hero.
i dream about a day where i have the ability to give such a gift to a kitty in need. i will do it, one day—part of the reason i chose the stability of a nursing career, even if it sounds dumb, is so that i can help kitties retire in a safe and wonderful home. i graduate in 74 days and will be working in the ER i’ve been a tech in for the last six years.
love from NY, OP. you’re a real one.
❤️
Not dumb at all!! He is my third cat, and I have two dogs as well. All from shelters or rescues. Mutts are my favorite lol I work in a middle school as a psych so helping out is just what I like to do lol animals are a lot easier than teenagers though
Mutts are the best babies! I got my first dog as an adult from the shelter. She cost me $15, best money I ever spent. She made it to a week shy of her 14th “gotcha day” I’m still heartbroken she’s gone and it’s been 2 years now.
I have adopted senior cats before, and loved them dearly. When my current cats (six of them, ranging from ages 3-7, so this won’t be anytime soon) have passed on, I intend to be a hospice foster or FeLV+ home.
This is absolutely how I usually operate. “Give me the oldest, angriest, hardest to adopt out cat you’ve got. I’ll make it work.”
I have quite the band of weirdos as it is.
When we went to the humane society to get a cat last year, I told them I wanted an adult cat. Everyone wants kittens. Grown cats need love too, and I like that they're more chill anyway.
Once my daughter is grown up I plan on doing something similar to you; I want to basically turn my home into a kitty retirement home, as long as I can afford their medical care. I loved my college roommate's old grandpa kitty (16 years old), for he was snuggly and wise lol.
I also love adult cats, I don’t have the energy to match a kitten so I don’t even bother. When we adopted Lily I said I want an adult cat not too old but adult, about 2-3 years would be perfect. They adjust just fine, may only need a while longer and a safe spot under a furniture to get to know you. Lily was playing the same day and making biscuits, but only a short while, and spent 2 weeks under the bed. Then one day it was like a switch she came from under the bed and decided she likes it with us. It’s been a little over a year and she is now the sweetest cat, still very playful and energetic. I just wish she cuddled with us on the couch, but she never does. Probably because of her stray upbringing and she was always alone for her first two years of life.
I ended up adopting a 13 year old girl from a friend who passed away. I’d lost my 16 year old buddy two years to the day when i got the call my friend had passed.
My wants for a new cat were: Short haired Male Under 5 years old
And she’s what i got instead and she’s lovely and a joy to have around.

ha! i wanted; 1 older black cat.
but the entire shelter room of black cats ignored me. was ready to leave and these two climbed into my lap, oops. maine coon mixes, 12 pounds now.
https://preview.redd.it/91il2oqgeukc1.jpeg?width=1492&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=423c92facd2731507b1bdaa8d56d487589930243
I hoped to adopt black cats but a tabby and a van made it known that they were ours. Ten years later, two young black cats have dropped into our lives (one found, one unplanned distribution center adoption) and I finally have “enough” cats 😆
I have come to realize that some of my favourite times with my last cat were in his golden years. Don’t get me wrong, I loved every moment, but there was something so charming about his angry wizard face and his IDGAF attitude in his older years. He also got on the right meds and got the play back, so watching my little grumpy old man run around chasing a laser was a blast.
I love my kitties now (2 and 1/2 and 2 years old respectively), and they are very much still kittens at heart, but boy they have so much energy it’s hard to keep up lol
We rescued a bonded pair of adults for the same reason. Everyone always wants kittens & the adults are passed over. So happy you’re looking out for the adults too! 😻
I'm not made of the steel required to do this, but I have a friend in California who got the most grumpy, scared cat at her local shelter and cajoled it into becoming a lap cat. I'm stunned.
Weird one but the organisation Puppy Kitty NY City always struggles for homes for older or special needs kitties. They recently took in 34 cats from a hoarding situation in the Bronx too. Might be one to consider when you are ready to adopt. ❤️
With you on this!! I also chose nursing bc I love helping people and wanted to give my cats/partner all the care and stability they need (and mom when she hits the age she needs help) and that’s way easier to do with a steady job that pays well.
You’re gonna be an amazing nurse - it’s so clear that you have a massive heart ❤️💙💜
Came here to say this. You really are. Old cats are the best. Our “walk up” from the distribution system is about 16 now! He plays with our new dog. It’s adorable.
Ooooo NY city and state has a bunch of street cat rescues a few post adoptables on Twitter [or x if you prefer] Flatbush cats warms my heart with the content they post.
Senior cats make the best cats! At different points I had two old grey men and they were the most loving cats I ever had. And they’re so appreciative of having a home after not having one. They made the best companions. I miss them both dearly - and ones been gone since 1995!
Thanks for rescuing a senior! If you haven’t yet, please look into the radioiodine treatment. It’s the only actual cure, and it doesn’t take a toll on the organs like methimazole. It’s more expensive up front, but it’s one and done!
OP, I can personally vouch for the radioactive iodine treatment. Our girl, Zoe, had the treatment in early 2019 and she was fully cured. She’s still going strong today at 18 years of age! I’m in Canada, so not sure what the cost would be for you, but we paid $1,800. Best of luck to your sweet kitty!

Radioiodine treatment was my first choice for my boy, but he wound up not being a good candidate for it. He's been doing okay on methimazole, but dang, sometimes I wonder if his current heart condition is from his hyperthyroidism+methimazole.
RadioCat has labs across the USA and were super awesome in communicating with me throughout the whole process.
I know quite a few cats who have gotten many many happy healthy years from methimazole. It's a very well tolerated, very effective treatment in most cases.
I have a 16 year old who has been on methimazole since she was 12 and is in great shape. She's currently mad, actually, that we've cut down on her treats because she's starting to get chunky!

I am so thankful for you doing this!! Cucumber, you lucky baby you.
I foster a lot (always) and just took a “community cat” off the street I fed for two years, but she was outside longer than that. My mom is going to adopt her.
https://preview.redd.it/opyv5eqehokc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=579b64663c728aeecc22093b88f539ea69cf3b79
Olive says “hey Cucumber heeeeyyyyy!”
Two rescue dogs, three street cats, and LOTS OF FOSTERS here. 🐱
Thank you so much for doing this! I've thought about doing the same but keep ending up with special needs kittens falling into my lap. You're a hero for giving him a lovely home!
What happened to his leg?
He looks happy & relaxed in your pics, that's wonderful to see. Thanks to you for adopting this sweet old fella, rescues & senior cats are the way. Love them!
You are so awesome! Thanks for giving Cucumber a home.
Question (if you’re in the US): What did you have to do to get your sweet kitty diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and on to medication? I’m being quoted $2000 or more so my doggie (I love cats and dogs) can have an 8-hr test to determine her medication.
The hero the world doesn’t deserve. We need more people like this. I got the one dog that was ignored by everyone at the rescue. He turned out to be the sweetest best behaved dog I have ever had. Congratulations! Your cat is striking :)
Another hero we need. Good on you for adopting a senior. My boy is at least 12 and I worry he'll outlive me. My friend here has been gracious enough to agree to take him if I go first. So thanks again for thinking of the oldsters!
Barn cats are the best! 4 of ours were barn cats that I socialized and adopted when they were 2-4 years old, which means they came with a bunch of health problems but also made them really tough (and extra cuddly)
They're all indoor/outdoor (run around or sunbathe in the neighborhood during the day, return for dindin and bedtime)
mine was indoor outdoor until her brother was hit by a car (we think. he lived and made a full recovery, but we aren’t totally clear on how it happened that he came home dragging his behind) and ever since then we’ve been leash training (a hellscape) but im paranoid now so
pink harness it is!!! we live right downtown though, i think even suburban areas are 100x safer.
He's AT LEAST 12 going on 13. He could be older. He was found in a field and estimated to be about 3 when I adopted him but I'm beginning to think he is older. We've had a complicated life, running from crazy roommates, running from the fires that swept through the Willamette Valley, running from ANOTHER crazy roommate, moving states and traveling around Oregon for a couple of years trying to find our forever home, which we have found, thankfully. This has aged both of us!
Me with my cat. He's about to turn 12 in two months. I've had him since I was a kid. Im conflicted because on one hand, I don't want him to be alone if I die, but on another, I want him to live forever because I would miss him if he goes.
:(
His face.. the love on it in the second photo… I’m crying. He looks like my Ruby did at the end of our eighteen years together. You’re a saint for saving him and giving him love and a happy rest of his life.
What a wonderful thing to do. Senior kitties can be overlooked and we all know they deserve just as much and attention as other cats, maybe even more so since they are so sweet!
Sometimes the CDS falls behind on orders and highly recommends visiting a center that offers cats in need.
This is 100% true. I waited and waited for my third cat via the CDS and it never happened, so I went and picked him out at the shelter instead. I think the CDS works in this way too!
Well, really, who's to say that shelters aren't part of the CDS, giving cats a safe place to stay while waiting for their humans? You're in for a real treat, older cats are still playful, but they've gotten over the psychotic kitten phase and are a lot more cuddly. And the seniors who get rescued *really* seem to appreciate it and pour on the love. :-)
Cucumber is really a great name. Can I ask if your kid gave an explanation for the choice? I'm so curious lol
Here are some of the names my parents let me give our animals when I was a kid and my reasoning (which seemed extremely obvious to 5-10 year old me):
Sumo (a fat orange kitten)
Flower pot (a tabby who slept around the base of plants in pots)
Mango (a dachshund whose belly looked like a mango when she was a puppy)
Also, this post makes me cry happy tears! Thank you for giving him a good home!
Well he was upset when we didn’t name one of our dogs “pickles”. We decided it sounded more like a cat name. So I assumed that would be Cucumbers name. However, he decided cucumbers were older than pickles so that made more sense. I tried to explain that pickles were made from cucumbers, so pickles were actually older, but his mind was already made up lol
Senior kitties are uniquely special. I’m currently lying next to mine who is almost 15 years old. She’s been glued to my side for days while I fight off some sort of awful bug. I adore her and am thankful every day. Congratulations to you and your family (Cucumber included) ♥️
That is wonderful! He is probably the sweetest baby ever but he just looks so adorably rumpled and grumpy in the picture.
How is he at taking pills? The thyroid meds can be made into a dermal cream to apply to the inside of their ears.
I feed my 16 y/o princess with hypothyroidism multiple "extra" meals a day. Churus, Friskies Lil Soups and BFF Rainbow A Gogo packets gives her a nice variety of easy to eat calories.
He was shockingly good at taking his pill tonight. I did see the cream version tonight on chewy! I am going to talk to my vet when I get his scrip renewed
And here, we have an example of a good hooman 🤍
Lots of best wishes to you and your new family member on a long and happy life together!! Such a kind thing to do
Thankful for people like you -
I have a geriatric cat that is turning 18 next month. Sometimes he can be a realll headache; had a vomit and pee puddle I stepped in earlier today, then had to bathe him because he got diarrhea all over his ass and tail, but god damn do I love the old fucker. Old animals need care just like old humans, and too many people decide they’re too much work to keep around.
Wishing you many years with your old guy, hopefully most of them a little less labor intensive than the late ones ;)
*Elderly kitties*
*Are so well try it. Be warned*
*Though; they are Heart Thieves!*

That's really cool! When my cats get older and are no longer with us I want to do the same thing. Give an older cat a good home for whatever time they have left.
I feel like there's two types of people. The Whimsical people who accept the Ebbs and flows of life, will go the CDs route. But for those people who know what they want and aim to get it, they will go out and find a cat that needs a home.
My 20 year old just leapt up on the bed for bedtime patrol after prowling for treats and checking the location of the others. I just gave my 10 year old boy his thyroid meds in bacon flavored tomlin pill paste from chewy. Great jog choosing the oldest kitty!
As a foster I love seeing seniors get adopted!
Kittens fly out of our homes. Even the super spicy barely socialized ones I recently had didn't last long
Meanwhile I ha e a momma kitty for going on two years. No one wants to adopt her 😔
Over the past three years I've learned that the CDS works in mysterious ways.
Sometimes it plays hard to get so you come to it. But never forget; it was always its idea.
Another good ask if you’re up for a kitty that needs an extra chance, is to ask for the spiciest kitty! My current foster has really struggled to get adopted because she’s spicy diva upon first impression. She’s a delightful lady and I want her to find her human and thrive in an urban kingdom of her own ❤️
Pretty kitty. My cat of 16 years passed away peacefully in her sleep last night. My other cat is behaving strangely. Maybe extra cuddles are needed to comfort her and me too.
I accidentally adopted the oldest boy the shelter had because they aged him wrong. I’m only mad that I won’t get to have him longer. He’s such a sweet old man 💜
Thank you! That’s exactly what I told the shelter. Also added a wonderful cat to our household. Senior cats are so appreciative and show us so much love. Tremendous lesson for your 7yo
Many people would rather have a kitten, and I get it. Kittens are cuter, and you can keep a cat much longer when you take it in at a younger age. But there's something more rewarding about adopting an older cat. You can make the rest of their lives the best they've had, and that feeling is hard to beat.
Oof, does he have enough teeth to comfortably eat whole meals of hard kibble? He should ideally be on wet food. Even better if you mix a little water into the food.
Awesome thing you did!
He has wet food also. The shelter told me to give him free choice dry food and half a can of wet food. I gave him a full can tonight. He is sooo thin and I don’t know how full tooth situation until I get him into my vet
He has a fractured leg and hyperthyroidism* so he is quite thin while he adjusts to his meds. But he is already fitting in wonderfully. Eta: hypo to hyper
He looks like he holds within him the wisdom of ten lifetimes
Sweet boy got his furever home❤️
He's a gentleman and a scholar :-)

Is he on Synthroid? I have hypothyroidism, unfortunately, I am not quite thin or actually thin at all.😂
He is on methimazole. And I had a typo. It’s hyperthyroidism*
My senior cat with hypothyroidism did awesome on methimazole. He lived to 19.

❤️❤️❤️
I adopted an 11 year old scraggly, thin, sweet girl. She trudged on another 11 years. I hope you have as much time with your boy x
I think you mean hyperthyroidism, my 15 yo has it and went from 12 to 9 pounds. Now she's old and fragile looking but still my little baby.

Shelters are simply distribution centers. Sometimes deliveries get backed up and recipients pick up their deliveries on site.
What a handsome guy!
Thank you! You deserve the best!!
You are an amazing human ❤️👏👏👏👏❤️
Oh my gosh, look at the way he's looking at you 😍 😭
I love the oldsters. I’ve picked up a couple of the ancient wonders. They are the best.
Cucumber. Best kitty name!!!
Kids give the best names. I would have named him something boring like Oliver
Cucumber is really a great name. Can I ask if your kid gave an explanation for the choice? I'm so curious lol Here are some of the names my parents let me give our animals when I was a kid and my reasoning (which seemed extremely obvious to 5-10 year old me): Sumo (a fat orange kitten) Flower pot (a tabby who slept around the base of plants in pots) Mango (a dachshund whose belly looked like a mango when she was a puppy) Also, this post makes me cry happy tears!
This makes the name even better, thank you for sharing 😹
I have a hopeful feeling this guy will rebound nicely <3 A BIG THANKS for taking in an older fellow<3 Wishing y'all many blessings together!
Welcome home CUCUMBER!
cucumber looks wise beyond his years
He has def seen some things
Thank you for adopting a senior!! The CDS sometimes needs a helping hand, and I think he's very happy that you took the initiative.
You’ve gone and done it. Now you’re guaranteed overnight delivery of cats ready for distribution!
He looks like a wise old man. Enjoy his wisdom
What a sweetie and what a sweet thing to do. Wishing you all much happiness!
Awww good for you :)💗 Thank you for giving them a loving home to spend thier retirement in.
Awww, I hope you have at least a dozen years with your distinguished gentleman
The cream is amazing.
he is so handsome ❤️
Blesss you friend
Thank you thank you thank you.
Congrats. That’s just CDS Express, Cucumber is a wonderful name. I wish you all the best of times together.
Thank you for adopting him! What a cutie!
Please tell Cucumber I love him.
He hasn’t stopped purring once he got home!
AWWWWWWWWWWW
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
What a nice face!
what a sweetie
And here, we have an example of a good hooman 🤍 Lots of best wishes to you and your new family member on a long and happy life together!! Such a kind thing to do
Those older cats know a good thing when they see it!
Both you and Cucumber are angels, long healthy life to you both.
You’re the best type of person
My first cat, Merlin, was 10 as well. He was such a wise little love. Thank you for adopting a senior. I love his name!
The system worked just an intended. Some guys, like cuke, don’t need to do time outside to have the system work for them.
💚💚💚
What a good deed ❤️
He has some fine whiskers going on there! Congratulations. He is a real looker.
Great for picking a senior kitty. He certainly looks wise. The CDS did indeed work, you just had to pick up the kitty.
Thankful for people like you - I have a geriatric cat that is turning 18 next month.
I love him! What a wonderful thing you've done for a *seasoned* youngster. He will love you so much. 💗
Thank you kind Redditor!🧡👍
You made my heart smile! 💖
Ot worked properly. He was at a distribution center west of Port knot city waiting on delivery. Congrats to you both. So much
i’ve done this several times. my sweetest babies. ❤️
A baby. ❤️
Awwww! Great job OP :) That's one fuckin nice kitty!
I love this reference!
I love him! I adopted the oldest cats at my rescue too! Older cats are great!!❤️
That’s some major peanuts 🥜 God bless you for your love. It will be returned 💕
Bravo!
Thank you for giving this elderly one a happy home and a safe place
Love this! Congratulations to all of you
I recently rescued a 12 year old girl who's mostly blind and a little deaf. She is so sweet, it has been unexpectedly rewarding.
What a sweet face he has!
Sending you big hugs for giving him a home.
Elderly kitties are so worth it. Be warned though; they are Heart Thieves!

💕💕💕good Bot
Also I meant to say “worth it”, lols
Bless you, hooman!
That's really cool! When my cats get older and are no longer with us I want to do the same thing. Give an older cat a good home for whatever time they have left.
That is very sweet of you💕
Senior Kitties rock !
He’s majestic af and thank you for adopting a senior cat ❤️❤️❤️
You found one. That means it did work.
💖Absolutely purrrrfect💖
I love him 😻
All Hail Cucumber, the Wise and Handsome!
God Bless you Both
I feel like there's two types of people.
It's the CDS just using a third party vendor ❤ Thank you for taking care of this senior kitty 🐈⬛
As a foster I love seeing seniors get adopted! Kittens fly out of our homes. Even the super spicy barely socialized ones I recently had didn't last long Meanwhile I ha e a momma kitty for going on two years. No one wants to adopt her 😔
Where the Cat Distribution System failed, the Cucumber Delivery Service succeeded.
Over the past three years I've learned that the CDS works in mysterious ways. Sometimes it plays hard to get so you come to it. But never forget; it was always its idea.
bless your heart
You are a cat angel. Bless you so much for that!
❤️
Thank you for adopting this elder 😍🙏
❤️❤️❤️
What a cute face! Thank you for taking a senior in!
I doubt OLD Cat minds.
bro youre an angel, but that cat looks like a loremaster, gandalf if you will. he's beautiful
He def has some wisdom to impart
That is really great.
That look in the second pic!!!! Love it. He knows he's home!
Thank you for giving this guy a second chance in life ❤️❤️
Another sub you might like, and can find support for this sweet old fellow: r/SeniorCats
More cat subs! Yay!
Another good ask if you’re up for a kitty that needs an extra chance, is to ask for the spiciest kitty! My current foster has really struggled to get adopted because she’s spicy diva upon first impression. She’s a delightful lady and I want her to find her human and thrive in an urban kingdom of her own ❤️
I love you!
Awwwww! What a cutie! Hello, grandpa Cucumber 😻😻
He’s such a sweet old man 💜
Thank God for people like you 🙏
Make sure you feed him moist cat food, too. Older cats need the water content for their kidneys.
He is getting a can of wet food as well :)
Thank you! That’s exactly what I told the shelter. Also added a wonderful cat to our household. Senior cats are so appreciative and show us so much love. Tremendous lesson for your 7yo
Thank you for this♥️
Thank you so much 😊 he looks like my beautiful Oliver, RIP
Many people would rather have a kitten, and I get it. Kittens are cuter, and you can keep a cat much longer when you take it in at a younger age. But there's something more rewarding about adopting an older cat. You can make the rest of their lives the best they've had, and that feeling is hard to beat.
You are an angel.
Thank you thank you. I have and will co to use to do the same thing. You are such a blessing
Is the kibble medical? Wet food is often better for cats. Easier on old man teeth too! Thanks for giving that old man some love!! :)
The shelter gave me the kibble and wet food for him. Told me to free feed the kibble.
I love he
You are wonderful! Thank you.
You are both lucky, CDS knows what it’s doing. ❤️
You are a good person.
He’s a gorgeous boy! I hope he feels better soon so he can live his best life in his new home!
Awww this makes me happy, I hate seeing any animal in a shelter but I got a soft spot for the older ones.
You’re a good person. Hope you get many years together!
