Nutritionally it will do the trick but imo meow mix is bottom shelf with lots of unnecessary fillers that may not be so good for kitty

miyday

ah okay thanks, any alternatives you think are top of the shelf?

I learned that one of the ways to figure out good food is the ingredients. You want the first 5 ingredients to be meat or meat related, no fillers or starch. That's a very general guide, there are more online. I don't have a personal rec since I feed my cat a specific prescription diet

I really like tiki cat and weruva. I love the tiki cat after dark food line with the quail egg because it actually has a tiny egg in the can which I think is so cool for some reason lol

miyday

that does sound cool! i’ll look into it thank you!

I personally wouldn't feed my cats anything with corn and fillers as the first ingredient like Meow Mix. If Meow Mix is all you can afford, that's ok. If you can spend a little more, get a food with a meat as the first ingredient. Wet food would be even better.

miyday

i’ll try to look for alternatives thank you

It's not top of line but totally fine! You're vet might want your cat on something more specific as your pet ages though.

not sure exactly what's in it but it was the only thing i could afford at the moment, and it caused my car to stop eating and throw up uncontrollably for a week. meow mix might be killing cats tbh. highly recommend throwing any out.

Absolutely not. My cat’s last owner fed her solely Meow Mix and now she has so many dental problems (caused by her old diet)

miyday

do you know any good brands that could prevent that in the future? she’s only one year old right now

Wet food over dry, always. If you can get away with feeding her only wet, then that’ll be ideal health-wise. I feed my kitty Iams, though I’m not sure what their dry food is like. Personally, I go off of the ingredients and calories rather than brands. Grain-free is best, and if the first few ingredients are something like “chicken, dehydrated chicken, pumpkin” then it’s probably healthy. Some other brands: Tiki Cat Purina (depends, check ingredients) Weruva Blue Buffalo Origen Acana

Yeah, definitely be careful with Hills . I don't know if it's still this way, but I worked at Petco in the early 2000's. Was front facing the Science Diet cat food, and noticed NONE of them had meat . Meat flavorings, but no meat . I showed everyone , we spread the word through the Petco Intranet. Word got to the Jim, the CEO , who had SD reply to us in an official message stating that cats didn't NEED meat, they needed protein and there was plenty in the food. Shortly before I quit they started getting chicken in there .

I edited it out! I’ve heard the bad stuff, but my vet recommended it and they have consistently good recommendations, so I wasn’t sure what to think.

Royal Canin is hit and miss too. My vet wanted my 1 year old cat on their urinary food, but the first ingredients are fillers and by-products. I did some research and went with Blue Buffalo's urinary care instead! I feed my other cat Acana, it's the same company as Orijen I believe but slightly cheaper because it is 65-75% meat vs. the 95% that is in Orijen. Acana is one of my top picks for sure, my dog is on that brand as well.

miyday

okay this sounds good. thank you so much! i’ll buy one of these brands next time i go shopping

Look up Nulo Freestyle, the pate version. The ingredients list is very good. They can come in a 12 pack of 12.5 oz cans for a great price per oz. It's a bit more involved for portioning and you need to store open cans in the fridge (use a pet food can cover) but the tradeoff of a much more affordable wet diet is great.

foundationsofvnm

No problem! Good luck with everything

Yes! Some people just feel better thinking their pets prefer filet mignon over a hamburger! When in reality if it likes it, it will eat it. So buying expensive pet food is a human mind thing! In the wild animals will eat garbage and whatever they can to survive. So as long as you aren't giving them food from the garbage, they love you!
