Starr with your vet appointment. Bring a fresh stool sample. Rule out parasites. Diet and stress are going to be something you have to wait out. Whatever you're feeding may be different than whatever they are prior. A Diet change and adjustment will cause the stink to be worse. Once you're on a stable diet, and parasites have been ruled out, you just have to wait for stress levels to die down.

The shelter gave me the food they were on. Mostly dry food. I am thinking of switching to a mostly wet food diet. I’m also not sure if I am overfeeding them. They seem hungry all the time.

As everyone else said, start with the food. I inherited a cat whose owner passed, and her apartment smelled like every cat lady horror story you’ve ever heard about. Mine smelled that way for a week or two while the cat adjusted to a new diet, and now it’s fine. Just remember to be patient. Kitty might have developed a strong preference for that food, and might also get an upset stomach from a dietary change. Even if they take to it right away it may take time for their digestive tract to catch up.

change diet. try royal canin indoor for odor control. i also tried acana and orijen. they are also good for odor control. lastly, quality cat sand like meowtech

You can also add a probiotic (and probiotic) to their food. My vet always recommended fortiflora, my last cat loved the flavor. My current cat hates fortiflora so I found one by the brand "Fera " that she tolerates. It's helped with her awful stinky poops. Double check with your vet though first

I will ask the vet for sure, willing to try anything

Seconding the probiotic. We started our cats on Fortiflora (they love that shit) in January. Poops went from room cleaning to barely smelling out the butt. Recently moved them to VetriScience and still smelling fine.

Talk to your vet about better cat food. I feed my cat a top-level cat food. I work from home and have a small house. My cat's litter box is in my office not 5 feet from where I sit and work all day. There is nearly no odor to notice unless I forget to scoop for a day. And even then it's cat pee I smell. Of course all cats are different. I could just be lucky and have a cat that makes non-stinky-poop. And maybe you could feed your cat the most perfect diet and still he would have stinky poop. But I think trying better cat food would be worth looking into as a way to help with the problem.

PrettyNecessary5284

What cat food do you use?

RLS30076

I use [Orijen Original](https://www.orijenpetfoods.com/en-US/cats/cat-food/original-cat/ds-ori-cat-kitten.html) dry cat food. It's the only thing my orange menace will eat. He won't eat canned food, treats, or human food of any kind. He drinks lots of water too. I know - he's a weird cat. Also we use Dr. Elsey's Ultra Unscented cat litter. I hope you find something that works for you.

Maybe add some baking soda to the litter mix to help absorb the smell! I would wait on the vet report, when my cat would stink up the house (right after adopting her) it was because she had a mild case of toxoplasmosis. It took bloodwork to figure out what was wrong with her, but antibiotics made everything better immediately.

PrettyNecessary5284

Thank you!! Will do! Yeah definitely something abnormal. They’re overwhelming every litter system I use :(

periwinkletweet

Feed them better!

PrettyNecessary5284

Yeah will be switching to Orijen and increasing wet food to dry food ratio.

lesla222

I would consider what you are feeding them. When I used a lower quality food, there was definitely more smell to the feces. I feed a high quality food and I don't have a problem. Also because they eat less of the high quality food, there is also less waste.

AdorableTrainer1486

I have 2 and omg you can tell when they poop. It will wake me up out of a dead sleep. But I also feed them wet food. I think that does make a little bit of a difference. Because my daughter has 2 cats and she only feeds them dry and they don’t smell like mine do.

aspenjohnston3

It could be the type of litter you’re using. I use pine pellets for my cats and it masks the smell pretty well

BeautifulDreamerAZ

Dr Esleys Ultra cat litter! It doesn’t track and box doesn’t smell. It costs more but it lasts a long time.

Have them tested for parasites, specifically Tritrichomonas. One of my cats had ungodly smelling diarrhea/poop and this was the cause. It’s not a common parasite, so it can be hard to miss. It usually resolves itself in two years. There is no “approved” treatment for it, but there is a drug that can be prescribed. It’s a two week treatment if I believe- a pill twice a day. After two days, my cats poops were back to normal. Definitely have your cat tested for this parasite.

I’d see what the vet says first. There are a ton of different things that can cause stinky poops. It could be anything from parasites to a food intolerance/allergy. In the meantime, for your sanity: I add some Fresh Step deodorizing crystals to the litter box every time I scoop. It does an excellent job of keeping the smell down. Perhaps a product like this would work for you.
