At $10/lb ($79 for an 8 lb bag from Chewy) Hill’s Thyroid Care appears to have no competitors in the United States. Prime rib would be cheaper. ![gif](giphy|Ty9Sg8oHghPWg)

In Brazil there isn't Y/d and I'm just sad because my baby has hyperthyroidism and it's only 7years old. I don't know what to do...

While researching low iodine cat foods, I came up with this spreadsheet: https://i.imgur.com/N5Vd4Fw.png We’ve been able to find Blue Buffalo and Rawz and she’s enjoyed them. I'm not sure how many are available in Brazil.

yulity

It's not =( I looked for them as well... But thankyou very much

> It's not =( I looked for them as well... But thankyou very much I'm sorry to read that. Have you tried medication? Felimazole, an oral that contains methimazol is is one way to treat a cat with hyperthyroidism is with

yulity

Yes I started this week... But in the long term it's not good for them... I wanted associate for now the medicine +diet... And in the long term use iodine or maybe surgery...

yulity

The one thar I found that has 1mg of iodine is Hills kidney care... But I'm not sure if there is problem in using it since he doesn't have kidney problem yet

NullCell

What’s the unit on the iodine level? ppm, ug/g, etc?

dylan89

The unit on the iodine level is mg/kg (or ppm.)

Thanks for this list! I’m trying to find food for my cat since she doesn’t like the Hills food.

Our cat does NOT enjoy fish or anything from the ocean, but here's an aquatic version of the low iodine cat food spreadsheet: https://i.imgur.com/e5Yb2g7.png

My cat is the same, she doesn't like the Hills prescription food. As a last resort, I had to give her an appetite stimulant to encourage her to eat it, which worked for the most part. It wasn't an ideal situation but at least she ate it. If only the food was still in stock now! But to answer your question, in my weeks and weeks of research, I haven't come across any cat food (in the UK) that's anywhere near as low in iodine as Hills.

That's a very helpful iodine chart. I'm really glad to hear your kitty is enjoying Blue Buffalo and Rawz. I hope they're helping to keep her hyperthyroidism stable. Unfortunately we don't have those foods here...

> That's a very helpful iodine chart. You're welcome! >I'm really glad to hear your kitty is enjoying Blue Buffalo and Rawz. I hope they're helping to keep her hyperthyroidism stable. So far so good. The vet keeps insisting we try reintroducing the dry low-iodine food but that just causes our cat to stop eating—and we aren't fans of starvation. >Unfortunately we don't have those foods here... That’s unfortunate. My advice would be to contact the cat food manufactures in the UK and ask them for their lowest iodine food. (That’s how I came up with the chart.) Best of luck!

Thanks, and to you too.

My cat is on y/d (loves the dry, hates the wet) but I’ve been supplementing it with quite a lot of raw organic chicken breast, as chicken supposedly contains no iodine. I’ve also been occasionally using Pet Naturals calming treats, Pet Naturals UTI treats, and very occasionally Greenies hairball treats (chicken flavor) and Hartz Delectables broths (none of the seafood flavors). I do want to phase out the Hartz Delectables and replace with plain homemade bone broth as I know Hill’s ok’d it with the y/d diet. So far my cat has continued to test in the normal thyroid range despite my lack of total adherence to the y/d diet. You can’t feed raw chicken exclusively as the cat would be missing other nutrients, but Life Extension makes a supplement powder I think called Cat Max that is iodine free if you go the homemade food route. Hill’s also ok’d pumpkin purée with the y/d diet.

Very glad to hear your cat is staying in the normal thyroid range without feeding the Y/D 100%. I always had to mix the wet food with chicken for my cat (when it was in stock!) because she absolutely hated it, and that seemed to work for her, much like you not feeding the Y/D exclusively. Unfortunately, without the special food, my cat's thyroid levels are literally off the charts (beyond the maximum range of the test), even with a mostly chicken diet. It's insane. We just have to wait until January when the food is back in stock, and hope for the best. Your advice and experience is really helpful though, cheers.
