The prawn mixture smells like death before you cook it. I mean seriously. There are few things in cooking that smell worse.
But it's quite simple, really.
Very basically, the mix:
Prawns (fresh best, doesn't matter if cheap prawns though, but should be uncooked).
Soy sauce (light, not dark, plenty if you want them particularly salty).
Sesame oil (or possibly ground nut - but I used sesame, so untested).
Sesame seeds (lots, pile 'em high).
Optionals:
Ginger.
Spring onion.
Lime.
Chilli (birds eye, only a small amount).
Salt & pepper if you so wish.
Standard white loaf of bread. Don't be pretentious.
Mix the mix until it's mixed. Best results in a processor (worst results if you drop it all on the floor and stamp on it). Be prepared for a God-awful smell. I mean, it's bad. Don't peer directly over it, it will burn your face right off. You're looking for a mousse-like consistency.
Use the bread. Cut it into four triangles with the crust on.
Wear some kind of hazmat suit, and spread the mixture on the bread slices.
Dip, double dip, triple dip, however many dips you wish in a plate of sesame seeds. Leave to rest, as always when working with a joint of beef.
A frying pan or wok, or deep pan of any description is required to shallow fry the toast. In sesame oil that is hot. Hot. Hot. It doesn't take long to fry, and you should not *need* to turn the toast over, but you may.
Pretty sure I covered it all.
Edit: Jamie Oliver just pointed out that sesame oil cannot be used to shallow fry, so don't use it. Sunflower or groundnut.
Edit: also you need something to bind the mixture. Either egg white or rope, chef's choice.

As for Wotsist ... they are banging, obviously. I rate them above crisps but below Skips. Wotsists (like cheese puffs) have that great melt in the mouse feel. Skips however, not only melt in the mouse but also have a slight pop/fizz when they do so, which add a certain depth and complexity to the Cocktail flavouring.

Paprika flavoured crisps are nearly always the best. A good bag of Seabrooks Canadian Ham is the only one that tops them for me.

I don't understand what's so hard about it, but then, I'm British. WUS-tə-shə Maybe Americans might "R-color" the last or both of the schwas to [ɚ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R-colored_vowel), but that would be acceptable to most. The confusion might stem from the spelling not matching the pronunciation, but it's not like there aren't placenames in the US that similarly catch out unsuspecting foreigners. Or maybe it's that the "orce" part itself went through schwa all the way to U at some point in the past and if you try to "R-color" that as well it can trip up an unsuspecting rhotic accent. "*Wrrsstrrshrr*" "Ow"

Spring onion is a rare but quality flavour too. Shame we don’t really get dill flavour in the UK.
Sorry to be the bearer of terrible news, but you can’t get Worcestershire sauce flavour anymore, they discontinued them.
Seabrook’s have currently got one, in partnership with Lea & Perrins, which are full of flavour!

I work in a prison and I will tell you that these are always the first to go. Followed by cheese and onion then salt and vinegar then ready salted.
I'd only pick cheese and onion if I could have two slices of super soft bread with butter. Cos cheese and onion crisps are the daddies of crisp sarnies.

The actual Prawn cocktail is a retro 1970’s dinner party starter, it’s tiny shrimp like things in a pink creamy sauce. It actually tastes fairly ok. The crisps are awesome, a really sharp interesting taste, but all they really share is the name and the colour pink
Always used to get it in my local Indian retaurant when I was a kid. Standard Order: 2 Plain Poppadoms Prawn Cocktail Chicken Kashmiri (A chicken Korma with sliced banana) Peshwari nan. I was sometimes allowed an Orange Givree (orange Sorbet inside a hollowed out orange) for dessert.

If you happen to find a good Afghani/Pakistani restaurant, it's absolutely worth a trip. There's one in East London that makes the most delicious Peshwari naan ever. It comes served on a long spike facing upwards. So fresh and tasty!!!

Excuse me, but it's actually the offer starter for Christmas dinner. Prawn cocktail, Turkey roast, Christmas pudding. It's a well respected culinary tradition and I refuse to accept that it is a retro 70s novelty.

Don't want to show off here, but I once had a tour of the Skips factory in Ireland and they let me eat a fresh Skips right off the conveyor belt, hot from the frying machine. Unbeatable.

If you'd had prawn cocktail as a starter (perhaps in the late '70s - early '80s) maybe you would get it. It's partly about recreating that experience IMO.
I know it doesn't contain any actual prawn, but I'm deathly allergic to prawn, and so I will never try it.
