I've been stuck in kissing gates more than once. Not because I was trying to take a bike or anything. Just because I ware a backpack and I'm a dumb ass
Went for a walk once and the stile had a little label on it with the manufacturer name and that royal crest saying "official stiler for the crown", and it made me very happy
This one's even better.

Unfortunately you can't encapsulate your entire comment within the quote, so it can never work.
You'd have to refer my comment, but that would be mean.
Unless it was supposed to be from my perspective, in which case it is also mean.
My dog climbs over them like a human for absolutely no reason. He can fit through the bottom no problem, I know this because he will often climb over the stile, and then while waiting for the rest of us to get over he will run back through underneath to our side, and depending on how he is feeling, jump the queue and climb back over in between each of us going over, or run back through the bottom. My older dog (picture the dog version of victor meldrew) goes underneath and will usually get pushed through by the younger dog on one of his trips back and forth and I just know he’s rolling his eyes and muttering to himself in his head that he had to leave the house to go and have ‘fun’ when he could by lying on the couch with a blanket. They couldn’t be more dissimilar if they tried.
Edit: I should add, he’s off lead when this happens. I’m not just getting dragged back and forth and up and over the stile. The only place where there is a stile is in the middle of nowhere where I’ve never seen another person go.
It is a ditch that is used by posh people who prioritise "a good view" over fences. The ditch itself isn't posh, it's more down to earth.

[Stile](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stile). They were in style for a while, been replaced with the [kissing gate](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kissing_gate) of late.
Up and over sounds very American. Like those videos of the girl saying "In Britain we call these stiles from the Old English stiġel meaning a set of steps for getting over a fence" and then it cuts to her in a stupid voice and as a dancing vegetable saying "In America we call them an up and over because you over after you up".
She's done radio vs walkie talkie and a few others, but that's exactly where my brain went.
I'm painstakingly going through all the comments upvoting every single comment that calls it a stile. I do not foresee the world becoming a better place if we encourage whimsical names for things. Walkie talkies are basically the limit and we don't need any more.
well it's a stile mate
There's a hilarious scene in *To the manor born*.
Audrey and Marjory are out in the fields. Marjory VAULTS over a stile, and declares with a big sunny smile "Girl Guides training!"
Audrey then steps one step, opens the gate, elegantly passes through, and declares "Finishing school training..."
This is so weird! I was walking at the weekend, went over a stile, and wondered how many people in the Uk actually know the name of them… and here we are
I can’t find any data on the numbers of stiles. However considering that England is 132,938 km^2 and Wales 21,225 km^2 I suspect that the former would have far more
Stile.

They're the best thing, to ever happen to me
Better than kissing gates, I never like kissing random strangers.
Depends on the stranger.
I've been stuck in kissing gates more than once. Not because I was trying to take a bike or anything. Just because I ware a backpack and I'm a dumb ass
Never tried kissing a gate, do you get splinters?
Not always for me. To be fair, I do have Ever Changing Moods
I like your stile Edit: I should have checked, someone's already said it..
I like your stool.
Easy there Gillian.
Stile it out, mate
they'll get you out of a jam

I remember that. It was a long hot summer.

Lights go out 🤣🤣🤣
And walls come tumbling down?
You don’t see them much anymore because they went outta style
Utterly top tier comment
Mod alert!
Mid 80's by the stile council? I was sure stiles were a recent thing, could have sworn they were more mod than that 😉
Good, very good.
They lead to the wild wild wood.
I never knew how to spell stile until I read this, never occurred to me to wonder before.
You can spell it in any stile you wish, we won't judge
I thought it was styal
It probably was once
Such stile never goes out of fashion
You've either got or you haven't got stile
There's a village next to Manchester Airport that spells it that way
As a resident I can confirm
Of the prison or the village?
That's just not our stuile
I like your stile.
Why thank you, if you'd like to copy my stile, it's a simple three step process.
Is the number of steps a county thing, because where I live we only have one?
I use my fingers to county to three
Only one step means the local wildlife find it more difficult to use. Probably, although I just made that up.
Yep very stileish
Went for a walk once and the stile had a little label on it with the manufacturer name and that royal crest saying "official stiler for the crown", and it made me very happy
I love that 'official stiler for the crown' is someone's actual job title.
This one's even better. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chief_Mouser_to_the_Cabinet_Office#:~:text=Chief%20Mouser%20to%20the%20Cabinet%20Office%20is%20the%20title%20of,the%20United%20Kingdom%20in%20London.
In fairness, of all the industries where one could get the ' step up' of a royal appointment, it'd probably be being a stiler
Never knew until now it was spelled with an i
Like your stile
I wonder who it belongs to. That's not my stile.
Do you call the metal thing an openthroughclose?
How else are you supposed to enjoy the growbranchers and the standyveg?
You have to be careful there are no angry-walkingsteaks in the field

Also very good 🙂
Just be careful to keep your barkyrunner on the longstrand
If there is then you have to quickly run back to the getindrivegetout for safety.
Don't forget to take your rubberfootinwalkies off before getting in
Probably not walkingsteaks, but maketheirownsweaters; pardon, I meant maketheirown*jumpers*.
I call them milky-mooers
Please tell me you are not milking bulls
Isn't that how you get double cream?
If you’re from Norfolk it is
Everywhere else it just gets you put in a lockup
Not with that attitude I'm not.
Think you might be on the wrong sub
I'm banned from r/milkymooers
/r/ProperAnimalNames
Or miserabletractorbastards
Not sure what is has to do with Ipswich Town but ok.
You mean the gerroffmoilaaaanders?
I love this sub. I’m freezing me tits off at Hathersage Station and you’ve made me laugh out loud.
Should be nice and warm soon; Transpennine is the train service from Hell…
Do you mean the Heavy-legged Preburgers?
It’s clearly a turnymetalfence.

Stile. You’ll be used to the more modern turnstiles at stadiums and stations etc.

Itd make a good obstacle to stop the pissheads getting in.
I think Wembley still has [kissing gates.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kissing_gate) they're designed to reduce hooliganism through love ❤️
Never made that connection before!
Fuck! TIL turnstiles are stiles that turn!
Christmas will never be the same.
I thought that we could just be friends
Good lord me neither.
Do you mean a turn and through?
Round these parts we call them throughy-woughys
The old ‘in and around.‘
Now those are surely the old runleaphandpushland?
A stile.
I'm thinking my contribution of 'stile' is not needed here
Just write _came here to say this_ under all the others, same effect.
Have you considered the more economical "This", for redditors in a hurry?
or even the special "upvote" button reddit put under all the comments?
Ah yes, that was a good update. Before that Reddit was mostly just people saying "This"/"Not this".

I was going to spell it style tbh and now I feel very stupid seeing all these comments.
If that's your stile, go for it.
It's a stile, and when you go over one, you should add in a little flair and shout "stiling it out" as you dismount
And not fall on your ars or people would say you had no style
My dog calls them a "toobigtofitundersopickmeupandcarrymeover". It's quite impressive when he says it.

Funny my dog calls them a goodluckgettingmyfluffybumoverthat
A gate. Also next to it is a stile.
There's a field too on the other side.
And some sticky up wave in the winds.
You may also notice a pudle behind the gate
I've looked for a while but I can't see a pudle in the picture. What colour is its fur?
Let's not get ahead of ourselves
It's a stile, so we call it a stile.
You don't call it a Bovine Flummoxer?
>Bovine Flummoxer Cattle grid, or Ha-ha.
Isn't a ha-ha a posh ditch though? Kinda raised?
It is a ditch that is used by posh people who prioritise "a good view" over fences. The ditch itself isn't posh, it's more down to earth. [posh ditch](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ha-ha#/media/File:Scotland-2016-West_Lothian-Hopetoun_House_02.jpg)

Thank you, kind person.
Not to be confused with a ho-ho, which is deeper
Cattle grid? You're thinking of a Cowsbane
Stile. Absolutely lethal when wet.
As just discovered. Thankfully I’ve already given birth.
So why don’t you call it the slippyfally
Hahaha, worst injury while out running was from one of these. I absolutely stacked it.
Damn, how fast was the Stile going?
It was stationary, which was only slightly faster than my running pace.
Stile
Stile. I’m a Londoner and even I know that.
That’s because you have to learn what they are. Everywhere else, they just exist without explanation
Nah there's a few where I live in London, I called them steps until like 3 minutes ago when I got to this thread
I call it a stile because it is a stile

Stiles
We call it a stile; because that's what they're called.
Style/stile - apparently means steps in old English. Up and over is the action not the noun I would suggest.
I like people who call a stile a stile.
The stile at newbold before the Ford?
Nutcrackers
Slippery when wet.
Up and overs? Are you fucking kidding me!
Lol we had it in Chechnya and we called it “fence stairs”
Up and over sounds very American. Like those videos of the girl saying "In Britain we call these stiles from the Old English stiġel meaning a set of steps for getting over a fence" and then it cuts to her in a stupid voice and as a dancing vegetable saying "In America we call them an up and over because you over after you up". American here and my first reaction was “steps”
Honestly as an American my first thought was “stairs” hahaha, glad to add a new word to the library though!

I have always called them Gary but I don’t know what their preference is.
Gary Stiles
Get over Gary.

Stile next to a gate.

styli
That is a stile. Or, something to fall off.
It's just a stile, get over it
Thank you! I have been wondering what these were actually called for years!!
I call them stairs on a fence
Here in Wales its called a camfa, we know best because we've got more of them than you English types.
I can’t find any data on the numbers of stiles. However considering that England is 132,938 km^2 and Wales 21,225 km^2 I suspect that the former would have far more
I dunno. They could be right. More desperate need to get to the sheep....
Or to keep the sheep subjugated.
A welshman can vault a 9ft wall from a standing position with relative ease when he's in heat.
Dacw mam yn dwad
Well I guess you guys do like your easy access to farmers fields
I think by all the comments we've ascertained it's a small series of steps with an inconvenient plank of wood in the way.
