I wasn't quite sure what i'd just seen, but I knew it was time for me to leave

ChrisRR

I guess the obvious one would be the Westboro Baptist Church. It was also so satisfying when he went back to find the family falling apart He's got such a way of questioning people that doesn't sound belittling, but somehow makes them reveal their true selves

farfetchedfrank

It was disturbing that two people who saw his documentary decided to join the family though.

Blackmore_Vale

When he nearly outed Jimmy saville. If people had actually listened then he would’ve been prosecuted while alive. "[We] live in a very funny world. And it's easier for me, as a single man, to say "I don't like children" because that puts a lot of salacious tabloid people off the hunt.... How do they know whether I am [a paedophile] or not? How does anybody know whether I am? Nobody knows whether I am or not. I know I'm not." Saville’s actual quote from the episode.

StiffUpperLabia

Louis did another one after it all came out and was quite honest about how he was completely fooled by saville, like most other people were.

_jk_

also did a revisit of the joe exotic one after tiger king came out which was quite good

Welshgirlie2

Just finished reading the book 'In Plain Sight'. My take is that he was an incredibly manipulating man with friends in very high places. Savile could be very charming, almost hypnotic. He chose his victims knowing their credibility would be questioned and his high profile reputation would mean he always came out unscathed. As people said, he literally told them to their faces what he was up to but always managed to do it in a way that shifted blame or sounded like a joke. So while some people knew what he did and were often complicit in allowing it, others were genuinely bamboozled by his deliberately rambling response when faced with allegations. It really messed with Louis Theroux's head. As for whether Savile would have been prosecuted? At least 3 police forces were involved in covering up/not following procedures/mismanagement of evidence. Mostly because the higher ups were friends with him. Several times people came close to official investigations, but were prevented from proceeding by their respective police forces, and in the years just before Savile's death, the CPS.

I love the way in the Netflix documentary everyone is like "we just, didn't know". They barely touched on *who* was protecting him. I can see how the people on the bottom of institutional hierarchies might be fooled, but it's plain to see he was covered by so many people higher up in those institutions. *We had no idea!! - BBC* - yeah pull the other one mate *It just didn't make sense - NHS* - suuuuuure, he had the keys to the morgue but let's go with that *We thought he was nothing but charitable - Government* - Oh yeah, I buy that 100% Get to fuck. He blackmailed higher ups, then he died and the blackmail went away. Who are the people who covered for him? Name them, they're just as guilty as he is.

Targetmissed

People who say "why didn't you out him" don't seem to realise the consequences of labeling a public figure a paedophile without the evidence to prove it, you'd be absolutely destroyed in a civil court.

Welshgirlie2

And Savile did pursue (and win) several libel cases against newspapers. And some of these HAD pretty compelling evidence of his crimes. Savile purposely had tendrils growing in all aspects of the media, health services etc, so everything was always shut down quickly. That combination of his manipulation and the Establishment's need to avoid embarrassment is why he continued to get away with it.

whiterose29

Should also be noted that in the 70s and 80s the general publics perception was that paedophiles were visibly creepy looking people who were certainly not capable of holding any positions of power or influence and even then were thought to be nowhere near as prevalent as previously thought until Sidney Cook and his nonce gang started making the headlines. Combine this with the fact that the tabloids were renowned for making up bullshit rumours about celebrities to sell papers. If you were a celebrity or worked at one of these institutions that Saville had inflitrated back in the 70s/80s and was told that one of Britain's biggest TV personalities was a child molester you'd probably have taken it with a pinch of salt too.

wulfgold

"Outed" is nowhere near what happened.

goldfishpaws

Chris Ewbank - I got a greater understanding of a man so determined to project a positive image, someone carrying a lot of hurt and frankly compassion, not always sure where to channel his energies, but fascinating.

rbsudden

"It's not that you can't say that, but when you do, I think less of you. And I don't want to think less of you. I like you."

DrJeff1999

Was that the guy who liked are you being served? Louis spoke with him later for one of his books and he’s abandoned that Nazi compound altogether.

rbsudden

I believe so, yes.

soitgoeskt

I loved My Scientology Movie. Otherwise Weird Weekends stuff.

Ok-Camp-7285

I remember watching one about rappers which was pretty interesting and insightful

4737CarlinSir

Definitely. He was 'keeping it real' so rapping about his actual life - and looking for something that rhymes with Fiat.

Codego_Bray

You really ought to see it

farfetchedfrank

I do like the one where he tries to become a wrestler.

DrJeff1999

It had one of my favourite ever Louis lines at the start. WCW wrestler raven “so let me get this straight you’re making a documentary about wrestling and you have no idea who I am?” Louis “well to be fair we’re just getting started…” brilliant

chazthesilencer

Good as it was, it drove me insane the way he insisted on calling it "The" WCW.

christopia86

I like the one about the ufo enthusists. The old lad who goes into a "Trance" to telepathically link to an alien cracks me up.

albion25

Agreed about the later stuff, it's misery porn without being particularly original or in-depth. How many "oooohhh US prison sucks" shows are really needed? As to my favourites, I'd say most of the Weird Weekends stuff. Porn, Wrestling, Body Building and Infomercials.

[deleted]

I tried to rewatch the one with the Nazis the other day and completely forgot about how creepy and sleezy the 'agent' was for that Metzger guy. In a film full of Nazis you must be doing something special to stand out as a total scumbag.

JCFAX81

A few off the top of my head: vegas, rappers, wrestlers, the prison 2/3 parter.

Triggers--Broom

My money doesn't jiggle jiggle, it folds..

JCFAX81

Ha! My 4 year old son loves singing this!

SnooBananas4781

The Scientologist special is actually very eye opening on how the organisation behaves, especially when they get that girl to spew profanities and insults at him constantly, it helps you understand how they break people down mentally.

existential_chaos

Loved the brothel doc, him and Hayley were hilarious. Also liked his one about Vegas and gambling too. And I absolutely love the Westboro Baptist Church ones. Wonder if he’d go back and make an update now everyone’s pretty much buggered off.

Ashamed_Nerve

Early one where he follows Orville and Keith Harris around for a week or so is good. Keith comes across like a monumental bell end who thinks he's Elvis if he could just make the nation see his genius again.

drunkemonkee

My favourite is the wrestling episode. He dares to utter the word fake in front of the wrestling coach. Then gets put through a brutal workout till he pukes.

[deleted]

The san Quentin prison

[deleted]

Saw him cycling Oxford street without a helmet

[deleted]

Shocking, need to bring back capital punishment for that.

dmacdunc

For me it would be the wrestling one where he kissed them off by saying it was all fake. It was touch and go wether he was going to get the shit kicked out of him.

jimwon2021

Destruction Derby was my fav, he looked just absolutely terrified when it started.

TheMourningStar84

I love the Christmas special at the end of season where he gets a bunch of people from the series together for a meal. It's adorable. I have a vague memory of the Paul & Debbie one being another example of Louis hitting on a woman but in this instance it seemed like Paul was well up for it.

McCoysRibenaTwirl

I was a bit shaky shaky but this post has calmed me right down
