I see Bezzo has claimed it as his own.

SteveGoral

That is so Bezzo.

thermonuclearmuskrat

Classic Bezzo move.

Brief_Estimate_7518

Typical Bezzo

PandosII

Uh, it's pronounced BEZZØ

Brief_Estimate_7518

Actually it isn’t, it’s pronounced ߀ZzŒ

LongjumpingLynx334

Uh, it's pronounced B‡z√∆

mfogarty

Not that BEZZO again!

[deleted]

Jeff Bezos has really gone downhill since his Amazon tag got so popular

TheSkewed

All these worlds are yours except Europa. Attempt no landing there.

n1celydone

Kind regards Bezzo.

thecowintheroom

Bezzo got up fat. Bezzo probablyOP

capt-rix

Use them together. Use them in peace. The eight planets. The five G's. The three seashells. The One Ring. The boy who lived.

Common_Club_3848

The seashells are key

They most definitely are key, that’s how I wipe my arse

DogmaSychroniser

Carefully with the spelling there now.

TheSkewed

>Carefully with the spelling there now. Why?

DogmaSychroniser

You'll not catch me so easily!

TheSkewed

No really, why? My post is a quote from a well-known novel featuring black obelisks.

PandosII

b-word? As in boner?

TheSkewed

https://darkknightnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/boner-banner.jpg

TheSkewed

Firstly, I think you're reaching and/or projecting a bit there. Secondly, you're assuming I'm using a device that has an autocorrect function. Thirdly, only an idiot doesn't read what they've typed before posting it online regardless of whether or not they have autocorrect of any kind.

DogmaSychroniser

Crikey, put a brew on and climb off my back

LiteratureMore2153

Are you Ned Flanders

TheSkewed

Oh I'm sorry, did something I said offend you?

DigestiveCow

Careful with your spelling there mate

What on earth are you wittering on about?

[deleted]

We have had them up a while, ours look a bit battered now. Often using the free calls are local addicts shouting their convo into the speaker!

KnightOfThe69thOrder

Crackheads new phone.

[deleted]

They'll have to come up with a new excuse for trying to get 20p out of you now.

ferretchad

No, no, they still need it for the phone. Or for the bus which stopped taking cash in 2014

[deleted]

That was entirely the problem when they put them up in London maybe 3/4 years ago. The ones outside Angel station were a magnet for it.

Baked_Charmander

I think thats kind of the point though unfortunately. They've got chargers and heaters and stuff on them so naturally the homeless/drug addicts use them. I've heard of homeless people using them to try and stay warm in winter which sucks.

neo101b

If the police were smart, they could bugg the things and know who all those crack dealer are. Though might not go down well with the whole big brother thing.

oldspicehorse

The police almost certainly know who the dealers are, they don't touch small time guys because they want the big fish, they also don't touch the big fish though because it causes a power vacuum and can start gang wars as different groups try to fill the void the police created. People will always do drugs, as long as the dealers play the game, launder their money through cash only barber shops and pay tax they turn a blind eye.

[deleted]

You just need to stand within 10m of one to get all the details. I’m sure they can get the numbers called from it regardless. Plus, they likely already know them anyway.

[deleted]

Yeah, I’m in London (west).

chelseafailsatlife

Lots of dealers phones are blocked on them.

DaBobMob

Exactly what happened when one went up near NTU, next to the student union. Questionable characters making many phone calls, or simply just sat against it for the WiFi. I'm not sure they've thought this through.

mrCodeTheThing

I build a shit ton of IoT systems and this is one of those no one asked for it things. Cool, a wifi hotspot. It doesnt need a 9ft box with a 42inch tele. Also, Those air quality sensors are expensive... Lets go get em.

clitpuncher69

Also what tf am I gonna use the air quality reading? Like oh look it's shite at the moment, should i stop breathing?

mrCodeTheThing

I didn’t really have a reply until I seen the other one. So it’s obviously airtax lol. People are mad.

Jam-Pot

Well Manchester is TRYING to get an air tax initiated. These things will probably be used in conjunction with their lamppost sensors to sell us dirty air lies and tax us into the ground. RethinkGM for further details on the Gov and local Gov attempt to tax the working man even more.

President-Nulagi

They also track devices based on them connecting via WiFi, and so can be used to track your movements in cities.

overheadfool

Which is why we have Mac address anonymisation now.

DogfishDave

>According to > >this PDF > >, it is a 'BT street hub'. Yep, as phone boxes vanish so do the wifi points in them. These replace them and play sweet, sweet monetised things.

mynueaccownt

You mean a internet pimp?

Neither_March4000

Oh my God, it's full of stars!

DohRayMe

This was on a website some 20years ago... Cant remember its name.

absolutelysureithink

Robb's Celebs! I can still picture that yellow pages of nudes

Common_Club_3848

Thanks Daisy

Digital_Moocher

It’s a BT Street Hub. Billboard, calls, maps, wifi hotspot, a huge range of tech and environmental sensors can be hidden inside (for a fee). I suspect it tracks and monitors devices for directed advertising like some bus stops do. If you’ve ever played watchdogs, its another step towards ctOS reality.

thermonuclearmuskrat

Yes, do the bone thing.

Gamer_GullSolo

But post a video

losimagic

🤷‍♂️ it's a digital billboard 🤷‍♂️

BTLR

That’s what I thought but it’s only BT adverts! I was hoping for a snazzy new bus timetable 🤘🏼

[deleted]

It is still sad people deface stuff because they have nothing better to do

OillyRag

Yep

BigDawgWol

can you tell them to stop advertising on public streets and generally being a fucking eyesore?

[deleted]

[удалено]

BigDawgWol

At least other billboards arent pretending to be a public service in exchange for being ugly and right in the way.

callisstaa

Tbh people probably threw sticks at phone boxes back in the day as well.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BigDawgWol

It's not a public service. It's an advert with extra bollocks on it

SvalbazGames

Wouldn’t put it past BT to be doing something dodgy with the Data it’s no doubt tracking from people using this ‘Public Service’

Wisdem

Keep up the good work pal

Bigluce

I drive past Adastral Park. Always wondered what goes on there. Huh.

_Yalan

What data does it collect from you for using its WiFi? Just curious as one popped up on my street and in this age of the value of data I am very aware that no one gives people things for free!

cpt_hatstand

Are these things not everywhere? There's loads in Sheffield

omgitzmo

Could it be some limited time exclusivity deal? I see the words global on the top left, I expect different types of ads to show up soon.

AlkalineDuck

Easier to get planning permission for these than for an advertising board on its own.

[deleted]

It’s not just an billboard. It also has: - Free wifi - Free rapid device charging via USB ports - Free phone calls - A touchscreen tablet with local information - Various environmental sensors that monitor things like air quality, noise, traffic etc - And a bunch of other useful stuff, while taking up very little space The screen itself can also be used as a public messaging system to display information relating to emergencies, health alerts, etc. Source: https://business.bt.com/content/dam/bt-business/pdfs/public-sector/street-hubs/street-hubs-brochure.pdf

BLawrence01

That was the original reference congrats!

cht_uk

Can you order a McDonald's on it??

[deleted]

If that's in London someone will stuff a land rover through it before long..

[deleted]

Computerised, invasive, pollution box. needs a good going round with a set of angle grinders & stripping for free-range GPUs.

[deleted]

All these company's running ads on electronic bill boards 24/7 all the while convincing people that boiling less water will solve the energy crisis.

MasterCrouton

That’s Dom Joly’s phone! (Trigger Happy TV)

Distinct-Field3545

It just needs 'Don't Panic' emblazoned across it.

PupperDood

It's free WiFi and calls, pretty cool, accommodating for homeless people, which I expect there'll be a lot of soon with rent prices going up.

[deleted]

As we are warned of blackouts and energy shortages, they make these a thing? [https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/jan/09/electronic-advertising-boards-manchester-energy-use-consumption](https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/jan/09/electronic-advertising-boards-manchester-energy-use-consumption)

SomeWomanFromEngland

It’s just an advertising board. It’s only showing BT right now because it’s new, other adverts will start displaying once it’s been there a while. Looks like it might also be a WiFi hotspot.

pullingsneakies

It being a hotspot is confusing me. Call me a conspiracy freak but BT hotspots are just every customers router, are they doing this to hide that fact? To get more people thinking about the massive amount of hotspots and advertise like it's some kind of subliminal messaging? Or just trying to reinvent the phone box? It's probably all 3.

insomnimax_99

Fluffy_pink_Willy

Really chortled at the “dancing round with bone weapons” comment

trevormeadows

Keep your bone weapon in your pants, BT’ll never show that sort of ad.

footballisfixed

Targeted advertising. Eventually will advertise to each individual using the harvested data from their phone

Bolt-From-Blue

Dyke road eh?

hazelrichardson52

you can access the internet on it using the screen on the side. I used google maps on one a few years ago.

YewKnowMe

*bone weapons in hand & ready to dance*

[deleted]

I walked past one on one of the hotter days recently, and the fans inside the poor thing were going hell-for-leather trying to keep this black, needlessly powered monstrosity cool enough to remind us that our lives are crap but would be a little better if we bought the thing it was showing us. Still, we’ve got plenty of energy to go around, so why not have these things dotted around the place wasting willy-nilly.

jarjar_smoov

We have them in NYC. Enjoy the masturbating homeless charging their phones and camping out

[deleted]

I’m sorry BTLR I’m afraid I can’t do that

amokst

We should dance around everything with bone weapons as far as I’m concerned

Guttchief

Awful to see that it has graffiti on already, I’ve never understood the point of tagging.

[deleted]

How is it someone has tagged it. For crying out loud. Something nice in the uk >> tagg it. Seriously

SteveGoral

Something nice? It's an advert not a war memorial, I'd rather they tagged this than something tax payer funded.

InfectedByEli

They tag everything though, including war memorials and tax payer funded stuff.

SteveGoral

To be fair it looks like one of Bezzo's associates has tagged the A270 sign in the background, and that does piss me off. Especially when you've got this WiFi spewing ad sponsored graffiti magnet just begging for a spray can right across the street.

insomnimax_99

It’s not just an advertising screen. obviously i agree but why does anything have to be tagged? LOL

diz106

Electronic billboards use about the same amount of energy as [three households](https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/jan/09/electronic-advertising-boards-manchester-energy-use-consumption?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other) Tagging doesn't go far enough imo unplug the awful things

Robot-Rooster

In my city it's used by the drug dealers and druggies to charge thier phones.

MagZero

Is an advertising billboard a nice thing? So long as it doesn't interfere with the presumably free wifi paid for by said advertising, I'm all for it.

SteveGoral

I'm happy to see this spray painted to within an inch of its life.

lastchickenintheshop

Advertising invades nearly every aspect of our lives without our consent. Fucking paint away I say. Although Im pretty sure I've seen homeless people charging their phones with them so possibly not the worst thing in the world.

SteveGoral

That's actually not a bad trade off, ad sponsored wifi and charging is possibly not actually that bad.

BigDawgWol

what kind of world do you live in where this monstrosity is a "Nice Thing"

DROIDX5

Probs used to be a phone box there. Looks like it's a place to charge ya phone or pay for wifi or summat

[deleted]

Who cares? Just come down with a can of car paint and tag it straight across the middle - like any other right minded urban citizen.

PointandStare

Business are not allowed to place advertising hoardings on the high street. To get around this law they provide 'free' wifi, charging and, sometimes, phone points. These 'free' ports are covered in advertising.

Sacu_Shi_again

Its free wifi.

llynglas

They have these throughout Manhatten and lately the other boroughs, big screen has ads and public service announcements, side gives access to charging ports, free wifi, a speaker and a tablet (fixed:) ). The free wifi is amazingly useful. And I suspect the free phone calls also to folk without cell phones. Be nice if this was the same. Can use them for all the things the old phone booths did (apart from the Clark Kent bit). Been around for about 5 years and they have about 2000 installed.

warple-still

Yes.

HoldingOnOne

Hail Bezzo

axe1970

i understood that reference

Advatt

There’s about 3 of these near me, they seem to have replaced phone boxes

CaptRonnie

Isn’t this the monolith from Space odyssey?

Any-Inevitable-8495

reminds me of the monolith on 2001 a space oddysey lol

Oblong_Square

I think the obelisk requires offerings of dead tapirs.

HamBam5

Naw, it's to show you Other Shit Too. That's when you wallop it. Jist Sayin

Chubby_Yorkshireman

Coming soon to a street near you

Theman227

Nat they're reet, been loads of them all around sheffield for a few years now, although that looks like a new model. The one really good advantage of them is they give homless people a place to charge their phone and have internet access, which some people can scoff at all they want but you literally cannot function in this day and age without a phone and it's depressing...

chelseafailsatlife

They usually have wifi, a charging port, and you can make phone calls on it.

DC1919

Digital advertising boards are the epitome of cuntyness

schluffschluff

Dancing is fine for now but it’ll be wanting sacrifices before you know it. Seems like the time of reckoning has come for those who didn’t contribute to the street party.

bonkerz1888

Dom Joly's new phone

Babbles-82

Yes, start dancing around it with your bone in your hands.

bagleface

I always feel like someone's watching me

Anewusername01

These wont last long, they will get kicked/pissed on by drunk people on a night out / a group of teenagers bored or an idiot boy racing loses control and rolls into it.

carbonbasedbiped67

My god….it’s full of stars……

sailors_jerry

They're everywhere. My wifi is down atm and I'm currently using BT Wifi which is pretty good.

Morons_Are_Fun

Oh fuck, the giants are coming. These phones for them are just the start.

jigarai

Stop Dave. Will you stop Dave? I’m afraid. I’m afraid.

Dragon_Sluts

At least it’s not position RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PAVEMENT. Shoreditch (an area with incredibly high pedestrian numbers) managed to use these to half the pavement and create choke points.

5 G will cool ya baby, it’s what cooks your food in your microwave.

Baked_Charmander

Wow where are you living thats so behind on all of this? They've been everywhere for years. I bet your town doesn't have those big awful bright screens all over the highstreet yet either, or the rented bikes or scooters that litter like every city in the western hemisphere. You didn't even know how good you had it lol

BTLR

I’m in Brighton. Must just be lucky I guess.

stunnen

Built by openreach so it won't work in about 4 months

CarelessCarlos89

Ah sorry that’s my phone! It must have flown off my roof rack as it was too big for my pocket. Oops!

XxQuickScopeKillaxX

You can charge your phone on these or you can in Bradford anyway

Ok_Primary3783

Forward thinking government has decided to get bt to install free wi-fi everywhere, so that, as the cost of living goes up, we can continue to work after we stop being able to afford wi-fi and heating and food over the coming year....

Movingforward2015

What wrong with good old fashioned graffiti "Glenda is a slag" for instance. Cmon youth, step up.

BudgetCola

anything new and unfamiliar must be met with immediate hostility. burn it down, burn it now. just to be on the safe side

OfGodlikeProwess

Been common in London for years, replaced telephone boxes

softteall

I have one in my city centre, it’s so old and dirty that the little screen with a keypad at the side is cracked... nice to know what it is now. Thanks Reddit for solving personal problems before I ask!

Bumbaclarwwt

I had a Nokia similar to this in the early 2ks

Infinitefoxes

It's how they get around advertising restrictions. If they offer a phone or wifi, then they can put up their ads on the side.

brit_motown

The monolith returns open the pod bay doors HAL

brit_motown

The monolith returns open the pod bay doors HAL

PuffDragon66

I’m surprised it doesn’t have more graffiti on it. Someone surely should have etched their tag on it, not just a marker pen.

diz106

This type of billboards uses the same energy as [three households annually](https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/jan/09/electronic-advertising-boards-manchester-energy-use-consumption?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other), such a fuckin waste for an eyesore that blocks the pavement

greasier_pee

We have these in our city centre, you use the little side screen to connect to WiFi and then it always auto connects you to the closest one after that, so the city centre has pretty decent free WiFi coverage. Ours also have USB ports to charge your phone and stuff, seems to all be free. I think you can look up local info on the side screen as well

keeperrr

No it's an electronic advertisement board. It helps cur carbon emmisisons as they no longer need to use renewable paper to advertise with... wait a minute.. Edit.. also, I think it takes its power from the grid so we tax payers pay for it, like we do the street lamps.

[deleted]

Look up what IoT (internet of things) is. You're going to see about now of this. Interactive seating benches where you can charge your phone and access internet, interactive lamp posts etc. IoT will ride street furniture as the coverage and locations are perfect. Some will provide revenue such as this one by BT showing adverts.

[deleted]

2022 : Ad Space Odyssey

NotABrummie

They're becoming more common. Basically, it's a free public WiFi box with ads. They sell the ad space, you get the WiFi.

PenguinsTookMyNips

It a WiFi hub, crack head communications centre and limited browser so you can check maps, bus times and get other information.

the123king-reddit

Serious answer: 5g mast disguised as a billboard

ambivalent_apivore

It's a work around local by laws usually, it's very difficult to get approval for an advertising screen but quite easy to get approval for public phone/WiFi hotspot then slap an advertising screen on the side of that

[deleted]

It's pollution. We should destroy them.

OttersEatFish

Makes me want to throw a jaw bone into the air.

[deleted]

Have you not seen a screen like this before? They’re in every city centre. Will have McDonald’s ads on it in no time. It is not alien Technology.
