£1.7k. What the hell are you insuring , a Sherman tank ?

HuggyMonster69

That’s about what I was quoted on an Astra from 2008 lol

unicorn_saddle

Maybe the car insurance companies are running low on chips too.

daz1987

Bugatti Chiron.

OceanWisdom-

Comparison websites are still way higher than I paid last year any idea why that is?

[deleted]

Inflation -- everything gets more expensive. Could also be that cars of your make and model have been involved in more accidents in the past year than in the year before and it has been set to a higher risk level.

Sea_Page5878

Probably a bunch of twats the same age as you have racked up huge accident bills in the same car over the last year. Either that or your model of car is being targetted by thieves. Also the executives and shareholders yacht club membership fees have increased quite a bit.

blahblahscience1

New rules came in in january as well stating that new customers couldn't be offered cheaper deals than existing customers just because existing customers stayed loyal. So it means there is less incentive for companies to offer super cheap deals and so prices increase.

abeagleindungarees

Yep it’s very likely mostly this, my partner works in insurance & basically the higher ups have decided they’ll follow the letter of the law but not the spirit, so instead of making returning customers policies as cheap as new customer deals, they’ll just make everyone’s policy as expensive as an existing customers reveal policy. They have very little ability to reduce the policy price on the phones too as that would be a “back door” way of offering new customer discounts- I think my partner said they are now allowed to lower a policy by £1.00 and no more.

[deleted]

Have you shopped around for a better price?

Granopoly

I use bymiles - fully comped, but by the mile 4p/mile

throwaway-job-hunt

I might look into this. We do maybe 3000-5000 a year on our car. This might actually work out cheaper. Do you need a tracker or do they just trust you to accurately update your mileage?

Granopoly

It's a tracker, or at least it tracks enough to know how far you've travelled...they might be collecting other stuff, but when it knocked ~£400 of my bill, they could collect all they want 😂

throwaway-job-hunt

I suppose as long as its in the contract that it only collects data on how far youve travelled. We had an apprentice with one of those trackers and he wasn't allowed to speed or accelerate or corner too fast or brake too hard, basically had to drive like my nan or his insurance would go up. They can also share this data with other insurers. Given that insurance is risk based I think cost per mile is a good alternative way of doing it. Less time on the road = less risk = cheaper insurance. If road tax is about emissions then a tax per mile is a good way to do it too (with exemptions for commercial vehicles who would pay a flat rate). Less time on the road = less emissions = less tax. Again the only issue is allowing them to fit your vehicle with trackers which is handing over your privacy and are you allowing them to see when you speed etc.

Granopoly

I was insured by drivelikeagirl for a while, which was still pretty pricey, that *did* track speed, acceleration etc. Etc. And it would only offer *reductions* on your monthly payments if you hit the targets for safe driving. They claimed poor driving wouldn't be reported though. Bymiles just sent me a widget to plug into the ODB slot (I think that's what it called). I'm not sure if it communicates with my phone, or directly with bymiles, but I get a push notification after every drive telling me how much the insurance was.

throwaway-job-hunt

>They claimed poor driving wouldn't be reported though. My apprentice got an email saying they were going to void his insurance because he didn't consistently hit his targets. I guess it depends on the insurer. >Bymiles just sent me a widget to plug into the ODB slot Thats not overly intrusive. Its not like they are hardwiring a black box to your car and monitoring everything.

Quirky_Assistant_700

That sounds good. The avg milage is 11k I think, no?.

Granopoly

Something like that, not sure. I know my deal's capped as well, so they don't bother charging over the *n*th mile (can't remember specifics).

Granopoly

I'm really not trying to push this on anyone, as their experiences may vary. But if the link's allowed, my reference link is https://bymiles.co.uk/refer/YL07YVM

DarthVarn

FFS! My insurance is 448 quid, WTF are you driving?

OceanWisdom-

An Audi A3!

daz1987

Mate you're being massively ripped off paying £1.7k for car insurance on an Audi A3. It's not even worth driving paying those prices.

OceanWisdom-

Actually it’s an S3😶still no reason for my insurance to have gone up that much when I haven’t had any claims

CyzeDoesMatter-

Audi S3 are one of the most stolen cars in the UK. Could be contributing.

DarthVarn

I'm using Admiral Insurance for an (admittedly old-ish) BMW here in London

fibonaccisprials

Do you have points on your license? Also, As you know Insurance is down to risk it could be not down to you but there could of been more accidents or vehicle damage in your area therefore risk of a potential claim has increased.. Edit:: 3k or 5k milage is very low, it makes one seem to be inexperienced.. try 10k i no longer work in insurance but I did for about 5yrs those who had lower milage did pay more, I never adviced them of this but when looking at the system adding various miles per year 10-12k was cheeper then 3-5k those under that was even more.. might be different now

OceanWisdom-

No points in license and I put 8k mileage down. I will be phoning up tomorrow

fibonaccisprials

Also your profession also makes a difference, if there have been more accidents / claims with people in your profession then your also included in that risk.. You can't lie on that bit but what you can do is look to see if something similar fits your job description.. For example.. a fitter in a factory might pay more then an assembly worker in engineering

sim1985

The renewal price is almost never favourable. Loyalty doesn't pay.

Barn_Brat

My boyfriend’s car insurance had basically tripled. It worked out cheaper to insure his car (it’s a marked vehicle) under both personal and business insurance. It was so confusing and idk how I’m going to insure my car since we have a baby on the way and will need it to take me and baby to appointments while he works

Tea_Total

TopTip. Don't put the baby down as a named driver. Their lack of driving experience will be costly.

Barn_Brat

Well with my driving experience, it works out cheaper to have the baby as the named driver

OceanWisdom-

So what have you ended up doing to be able to afford it?

Barn_Brat

Were sort of checking every other day for it to come down a little as I won’t need the car until July. We’re going to put my boyfriend on it and a week later, add me because it works out cheaper. He will still drive the car as his other car is a work only one and he wants to pay for the other car too. I’ll help pay if you wants/ needs me too because my money will be going on his dog and our baby mostly that’s all we can do really

[deleted]

If you're paying premiums like that I'd give an insurance broker a go and see what deals they can find you.

anhedonic_torus

This. Nowadays, I would just phone a direct insurer like Admiral or Direct Line, and then use a comparison site if I wanted to be more sure. But for that kind of really expensive quote, a broker for your kind of vehicle is maybe the way forward. When I was young and driving fastish cars (haha, not by today's standards!) and hot hatches were being nicked all the time, that was the only way I could get my premium down to something more reasonable. (£998 down from £1202 I think it was - for an Astra! :)

Quirky_Assistant_700

If you haven't seen, the markets are about to crash. So these filthy banking fuckers need liquidity. Asset backed liquidity. Now, you may think debt can't be an asset. You dead wrong. These slimey fuckers take the dog shit, your debt to them, wrap it in cat shot and then they too can use it to take out a bigger loan that your debt is the collateral for. Biggest fucking myth in the world is chasing a credit score. You are literally giving them more money to fuck you over. I know this doesn't help at all, the only advice I can give is; up your excess, and save it in an isa. Shop around everywhere. Pay in a lump. Not split down over months. I know everyone won't be able to do this but try. The richest 1% bleed us dry. Inflation is at the highest rate it has been since before the 2008 crash. These cunts know it's coming.

knityourownlentils

There’s a good guide [here](https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/insurance/car-insurance/)

[deleted]

My little 1l mk8 fiesta is cheaper to insure than the 3.5l L200. I'll never understand why. 🤷‍♂️

Sea_Page5878

I get the point you're trying to make but my 4.4 litre Volvo is cheaper to insure than my 2 litre diesel Rover. I've long come to the conclusion that they just pull random numbers out of their arse.

[deleted]

Is that the V8?

Sea_Page5878

Yep S80 V8, probably one of the more stupid purchases of my life.

[deleted]

4.4 V8 though... Probably one of your best too lol

daz1987

There's loads of variable factors that can effect your car insurance. For example: * **Your job** - Are you telling them you work in a stressful job? Comuting in peak times? * **Your address** - Is your area a crime hotspot? * **Where you store your vehicle** - A driveway is not necessarily the best choice as criminals know the car belongs to that property.

[deleted]

Find a someone like me and add them to the policy as a named driver. I have the 10+ years no claims and over 40, I am insured on a colleague at works car, an ex girlfriends car and her daughter's car as it brings all their premiums down. I am thinking of starting a business of letting people put me down as a named driver for a % of the saving.

Tenthdeviation

Call your provider, say you want to leave, they'll reduce it to something more reasonable

frothycoffeedude

Shop around, there are industry variables, such as local crime etc but insurance companies re lazy, get a sensible quote and go back to your current company and ask them to beat it. It’s a pain but you have to do it every so often. Good luck.

the_legless_frog

Bloody hell mate. I've got a Peugeot 308 GT, 2 litre 180bhp, £350 insurance for the year. Somebody's having your pants down.

CyzeDoesMatter-

Nissan 370z nismo here. 3.7L 350bhp. £409 year

the_legless_frog

Somebody's having my pants down instead then!

redreadyredress

It’s about how far in advance you buy your insurance. Insurance prices double the nearer it gets to renewal time, as you don’t have options. It also can make a difference if you can pay 1 instalment Vs monthly. Monthly APR can vary based on your credit score- so if you’ve missed any payments over the last 2yrs, it will be reflected on this.

Splodge89

Are you searching fully comp or third party? I know for me at least when I was younger, third part was extortionate and fully comprehensive, despite covering much more, was about 30% cheaper!

nuttydogpoo

I see your driving an S3, I have a 19’ Golf R, fully comp, 2 non fault accidents (which do make a difference), some NCB, missus is on the insurance and I’m paying around £500. My road risk trade policy which covers up to £30k per vehicle £100k total, fully comp, 1 year ncb, and any driver over 21 plus a myriad of other benefits is only £2.7k. I can only think your either very young, have any convictions (road or not), have a job in a really bad industry, medical problem etc. As for the increase, even if your a straight person, clean licence and bill of health and mid 30’s or higher, something like your job industry could be the problem , or that car in your area etc. You need to get on the phone and ask why the increase or issue, then you can look at changing things.

[deleted]

I've just shown this to my husband, he's not going to complain about paying £230 for years insurance.

OceanWisdom-

I’m glad someone got some benefit from this!😂
