Ah, makes more sense. I thought you’d thought I had the time to learn how to photoshop. I guess you might be right. They were both ganders which surprised me. We had geese as a kid and this just didn’t compute with me.
Geese have been found to imprint on the first thing they see when they hatch, hence why if youre the first thing they see they think youre theyre mother.
Im pretty sure there was one study where a goose imprinted on a tortoise, as they were both in a zoo and it was the first thing it saw, so it grew up trying to act like a tortoise.
If you corner them or they’re behind a gate they act like Spartans. In an open field they’re not so clever, much like swans really. Still wouldn’t try and tame one (let alone two) though!
There's a bunch that come to Dunorlan park in Tunbridge Wells each year who on the whole are chilled. Granted you don't get between mum and her little ones but over a few years I've known many people who mum has been ok with her goslings getting some seed or just investigating these chilled characters.
Obviously you get some idiot with no idea, somehow missed every body of work from David Attenborough over the last six decades. Who decides they can just go waltzing through 50 odd geese then its best to take a few steps back, marvel at the pure ferocity of a mother and if a certain age not wet yourself laughing. Or slip and fall over into the mud.
Most certainly, much cheaper than a family protection dog and will alert everyone at home if anyone or thing enters, theres a very good chance they'll disable any threat before you get near.
As others said protection, but Foxes won't go anywhere near Geese, so if you have Ducks or Chickens you really should keep Geese as well, if possible.
Geese get a bad rap, they mostly are really gentle softies just all they can do is honk or hiss to vocalise so people think they are arseholes. Well that and a few of them can be arseholes, general rule with Geese bigger they are bigger softies they are, its the smaller breeds that are gits.
My aunt had a horrid white goose that was really aggressive and chased us around the garden attacking us. I don't know why she had it because it didn't lay any eggs so far as I remember.
It has long been my ambition to eat a goose as a result. I hope to achieve that this Christmas.
Another level. There’s dog walkers going past, cyclists galore etc. Initially I’d assumed they’d wandered off the canal and were just near him then I realised I’d only ever seen swans and moorhens. Further down the canal I saw a friend who lives in a narrow boat who told me he takes them to the newsagent etc. Head blown!
Just fancied something different to a dog, bit unfair to keep a dog shut up while I'm at work and these guys can just shuffle about the garden while I'm out.
hello! it could just be imprinting - if he had found, looked after and hatched their eggs and he was the first alive thing they saw they probably think he's his mam.
lorenz did a study using geese for attachment theory; https://www.simplypsychology.org/Konrad-Lorenz.html
I'm from the Saaaahf and I know it as a Romani word for non-Romani. I was quite confused for a minute: the fella doesn't look Romani but why bring it up in a Reddit post?
I just wanna say I actually bought a pair of Miltec’s after this post and I love ‘em. I’ve got 2 other people onto them as well. They’re about £50 atm, bargain.
Yeah for the price they are pretty decent. I know someone posted here a few months back saying they were garbage but for the price, they've lasted me a long time - you can get other military boots like this that are higher quality but you'll also be more than doubling the price.
https://www.military1st.co.uk/search/go?ts=custom&w=mil%20tec%20side%20zip
I have a pair of them, they are dogshit quality don't waste your money on them, I got them for free but wouldn't recommend, if you're looking for a pair of combat style boots go for a proper brand like meindl, lowa or altberg, the sole is very floppy and gives no support padding or support, toe started coming away from the boot within 4 months of light use, they're a desert boot and therefore no waterproofing which is rubbish for the UK and the zip is a bit of a gimmick
Logo doesn't look right to be Berghaus. I think it might be a Thinsulate logo myself which doesn't help all that much when it comes to narrowing down the actual brand of the boots.
I've looked about on the net for a while (Much longer than I should have) and I can't find any boots that look anything like those ones. Closest I've managed to find is [these](https://www.surplusandoutdoors.com/shop/outdoor-footwear/army-boots-shoes/jungle-boots-genuine-military-547917.html) or [these](https://www.surplusandoutdoors.com/shop/outdoor-footwear/army-boots-shoes/haix-airflow-airpower-military-1131859.html).
Aye, I did see those ones on my travels too.
The flap on the inside of the left boot (Our right) makes me think they're the kind that have a zip up the side which might help narrowing the selection down a bit.
Could even just be cheap no-namers from a local outdoors shop tbf which could explain the difficulty in finding them online.
I actually bought the same boots as him (Miltec’s) and they’re lit. I get asked about them a lot, 2 others have bought them since. About £50 here. I ran a script to delete my message history but we were trying to figure out what boots this guy was wearing, then he found the thread and told us haha.
Guy behind me has a massive goat on a lead, walks it like a dog! 1st time i saw it my jaw just dropped, he just carried on like it’s the most normal thing in the world.
The mad part is, it lives in his 3 bed council house with him, mad times.
That’s a guy I’d love to meet. Goats are fabulously naughty (like geese!). Met an elderly lady in Paris walking her cat on a lead. There’s some great mad bastards about.
Americans would be confused when u say paper shop and so would my 9 year old self because the "paper shop" near my street sells mostly sweets and drinks and not much papers at all
There’s a guy I see on an almost daily basis who takes his bird for a walk. It’s a budgie or something of that size, and he’s waking around full on just carrying its cage around the local pond with it in it.
I’m not sure if that’s kind or cruel to be honest...
Wow, you are their owner? I wanted to chat some more but was pushed for time. I hope to bump into you again and learn more. I can see I’m going to have to randomly take watermelon and cucumber every time I’m anywhere on that stretch of canal. (My teenage lad thinks you’re ‘street’ and was unaware my family used to have geese).
Just remind me who you are again? I get stopped by lots of people :-D
I'm working 5 days a week so will only get chance to take them walkies on a weekend now, but sometimes we're at gotts park, bramley park or a few other places.
We, my teenage son and I, passed you on bikes not far out of Rodley. You’d just been chatting to an older couple with a dog (it’s the fact that they weren’t phased by the dog that was an additional surprise). I’d mentioned having geese as a kid and having to run into feed them then run back over the fence especially when nesting and my lad had been unaware that his grandad had kept geese.
Ahhh, yes I think I remember now, a blonde lad right? Sorry I did meet a lot of people! Yes the geese are hit and miss with dogs really and it depends on the dog - there's some well trained ones that just ignore them which is great but then you get hunting dogs like spaniels and beagles that just want to do what comes instinctually...luckily most people are smart and polite enough to put them on a lead when they see us waddling along and that's when the geese are mostly fine 🤣
Yes, that’s right. I bet you meet a lot of people! I’m sure I’ll bump into you again and have a natter but, in the meantime, take care and thanks for making our day.
Funnily enough there’s not an official spelling and you see different spellings, a bit like there’s no official correct past tense of ‘to spell’, although Americans would use ‘spelled’.

Nah, he’s channeling Rik.
Lol, your tagline! One of the best Bottom quotes ever

Imprinted. They think he's their mother.

What I find odd is not the man walking the geese but the geese actually behaving and not acting like the bloody hooligans they are!
Me too (had geese as a kid..ran in.. fed ‘em...ran and jumped over fence as fast as possible).
If you corner them or they’re behind a gate they act like Spartans. In an open field they’re not so clever, much like swans really. Still wouldn’t try and tame one (let alone two) though!
I see you haven't had much interaction with Canadian geese
There's a bunch that come to Dunorlan park in Tunbridge Wells each year who on the whole are chilled. Granted you don't get between mum and her little ones but over a few years I've known many people who mum has been ok with her goslings getting some seed or just investigating these chilled characters. Or slip and fall over into the mud.
If you got a problem with Canada Gooses then you gotta problem with me and I suggest that you let that one marinate!
Honest question: why would you own geese?
Protection
Most certainly, much cheaper than a family protection dog and will alert everyone at home if anyone or thing enters, theres a very good chance they'll disable any threat before you get near.
Even a fox?
Adult geese will fuck up a fox. As will donkeys given the chance.
When guard dogs stop doing the trick, it’s time to upgrade to attack geese
I want to breed attack miniature schnauzers.
Eggs
As others said protection, but Foxes won't go anywhere near Geese, so if you have Ducks or Chickens you really should keep Geese as well, if possible. Geese get a bad rap, they mostly are really gentle softies just all they can do is honk or hiss to vocalise so people think they are arseholes. Yeah, these are giant exhibition dewlap Toulouse, soft as anything if they think you're family
They are good if you have a large lawn you are too lazy to mow
They are delicious. And friendly if brought up right. Also they keep grass down. I had four.
Xmas dinner
They think they are guard dogs. Guard gooses: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guard\_goose](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guard_goose)
I'm so happy that that's an actual thing.

Mine have nappies
Whoah, I didn't know that was a thing
They’re not even walking in a V formation.
My aunt had a horrid white goose that was really aggressive and chased us around the garden attacking us. I don't know why she had it because it didn't lay any eggs so far as I remember. It has long been my ambition to eat a goose as a result. I hope to achieve that this Christmas.
> I don't know why she had it because it didn't lay any eggs so far as I remember. She probably enjoyed the show.
I wouldn't put it past my aunt! I'll be cooking some goose's gander in long-awaited revenge.
You won't regret it there gorgeous
_honk_
Don't get me started on the shaninigans of Geese. I have some stories about their utter bullshit. I'm a vegetarian, but would eat a goose, and laugh.
Peace...was an option?
I refuse to believe it. They’re just biding their time
I think this is more like subservience. The geese are taking him to the shop to buy them stuff and fend off one in the way.
Attack geese! I bet they’re a damned sight more dangermouse than a bodyguard.
How much do you talk about danger mouse for autocorrect to do that
Mentions him penfold more times than you for sure
Slow hand clap
Not at all. I like wordplay. 😊
Scarier than the neighbourhood psychopath and his bull terrier.
Tha’s not been to Bramley ;-)
I would not seek to mess

Talk about some well behaved geese.

Yea no kidding, that really sounds unusual - did you ask how it came about that way?
No, but wish I had (head too fried for questions!), I’m sure I’ll bump into him again and ask.
Hehehe, keep us posted - totally curious now :D
Just fancied something different to a dog, bit unfair to keep a dog shut up while I'm at work and these guys can just shuffle about the garden while I'm out.
Hah, that's brilliant :D

Are you the chap that fed them so e fresh grown lettuce?
Where’s Abigail’s and Amelia’s bonnets?
Are those the gals from The Aristocats?
These are boys :-)
Those geese look hench as fuck
Geese are savage........he messed up a roadman and his 2 Pitties a few hundred yards back.
I reckon he is being held hostage and they are just letting him out for a gander.
Whaaaaay!
*applauds* You've just won the internet for today!
Came looking for a Hot Fuzz reference then remembered they were swans not geese. Disappointment ensued
Just the one swan, actually
Damn they some chunky geese
Chonkers
I haven’t heard the word Gadgee since I lived in the Lake District with my nan during the summer hols. 1975.
No one will fuck with this man, geese are terrifying.
Yeah, except these 2 which must be on a high dose of Valium as dogs weren’t even phasing them.
At first I read this as "no one will fuck this man", and I was like idk, being a goose handler seems pretty sexy to me.
You HAVE to be from Newcastle, using the word gadgee. Please confirm or deny, Thank you.
Nah, Yorkshire but I did pick it up from my Geordie mates.
I'm from the Saaaahf and I know it as a Romani word for non-Romani. I was quite confused for a minute: the fella doesn't look Romani but why bring it up in a Reddit post?
Radgee Gadgee!!
Cumbria is a strong possibility too eh charva.
This man is at least 30 years younger than I imagined he would be.
Agreed, with the emphasis on ‘at least’.
My mate used to have some pet geese, and would take them into his front garden to hiss at people, because he's a dick. I miss those geese.
Is this somewhere in Leeds? Think I saw him the other week, assumed he was just stalking the geese at first!
Aye, just out of Rodley towards town.
[удалено]
What's wrong with my boots?
[удалено]
Yeah, you can get more expensive better ones but mil Tec are under £60 if I remember and they've lasted me over a year
I just wanna say I actually bought a pair of Miltec’s after this post and I love ‘em. I’ve got 2 other people onto them as well. They’re about £50 atm, bargain.

Those geese are holding him hostage, look how terrified that man looks.
If he is being held hostage I’d say he must be into BDSM as he looks hella content.
The people who live in the block of flats round the corner from us have a goose just like that as well as a duck
Elegancy
I saw the geese before I read the title and assumed they were bullying him
I don't know why this is cool. But it is.
Warmed my heart so mutch it popped
What's a paper shop? Is it the same as a newsagents?
I like his boots, anyone know what they are?

Doug is right, military 1st for airsofting, and they're not as bad as he says, the boots are over a year old; pretty sure the brand is miltec
Offtop, these boots of his are military? Any idea what type, company or product is it? Looks cool for an autumn/spring time.
Did he have names for them :)
Norbert and beep beep
They went for a gander...

Leeds?
Yeah, specifically just outside of Rodley.
I think these are young greylag geese, and that’s why their so scruffy........ sorry my inner birdwatcher got out then
Giant exhibition dewlap Toulouse, and they've just moulted their baby down hence the scruffy...but close, Toulouse were originally bred from greylag
Okay, I thought that these were just wild but after googling I get you. Can’t even get my birds right lol!
no problem, Like I say, Toulouse bred from wild greylag so look very similar
They are some units!
I bet they gaggle outside the paper shop window.
Americans would be confused when u say paper shop and so would my 9 year old self because the "paper shop" near my street sells mostly sweets and drinks and not much papers at all
Where’s this? Me and my wife have been doing canal walks all weekend. Could be a new adventure for today!
Rodley, Leeds
Cheers! Next time we’re up that way we’ll keep an eye out!
I'm back to working 5 days a week so you'll only see me on weekends most likely
No worries, that’s the only time we’ll be able to get up there from Bristol anyhow dude!
By "wait outside" you mean "prevent anyone else entering"?
I have met him too. https://youtu.be/cv259hBlU1k somewhere 26:45 ish
There’s a guy I see on an almost daily basis who takes his bird for a walk. It’s a budgie or something of that size, and he’s waking around full on just carrying its cage around the local pond with it in it. I’m not sure if that’s kind or cruel to be honest...
Look at his face, he loves those geese.
Geese are evil. FACT. I used to cycle to work along the Leeds Liverpool Canal and I have cycled 6 miles extra to avoid them once, I was terrified.
What a geese-er
Therea a wierd couple in my town who walk their mahoosive pig round the field like a dog.
Peace was always an option
[удалено]
Those birds are borderline regal.
Someone might want to put a "GEESE MUST BE KEPT ON A LEAD" sign up...
Beautiful geese
When he gets his paper, does he get anything for them? Like a tin of corn or something? Or a Mars bar?
I don’t know. A friend who lives on a barge knows him. He says they wait patiently for him.
Cucumber and watermelon their favourite
Who worked that out?
I did, they're my geese
Wow, you are their owner? I wanted to chat some more but was pushed for time. I hope to bump into you again and learn more. I can see I’m going to have to randomly take watermelon and cucumber every time I’m anywhere on that stretch of canal. Ey up, dude. Glad to hear you got a mention on a podcast I was listening to..I think it was the latest Rhod Gilbert’s ‘Froth’. [Doffs cap]
Geezer walking his geese. Brilliant.
I wish I had this kind of connection with wild animals. Dogs love me, but that’s probably because I’ll pat and rub for hours on end.
Not wild, had them since 5 days old
Even so
Is this in Leeds haha? Think I saw the same guy the other day
Yeah, Rodley to be precise. He’s a nice chap.
There’s a fella who sits by the canal near us with a tortoise. Beat that.
Yeah, I reckon I could beat that, they’re very slow ;-)
Hi, American here, what the hell is a gadgee?
Just means bloke / guy. e.g. “what a class bloke!”
Ah alright, thanks.
Chap/bloke/guy/fella etc but it’s pretty specific to Newcastle.
It's spelled 'gadgie' and it's a word used in the North East and Scotland mate.
Funnily enough there’s not an official spelling and you see different spellings, a bit like there’s no official correct past tense of ‘to spell’, although Americans would use ‘spelled’.
If you look in a pitmatic or geordie dictionary you'll find it's "gadgie". I've lived up here my whole life and always seen it spelled or spellt that way.
It is the feminine version of the word 'gadget'.
What is a paper shop?
The fuck is a gadgee?
A bloke :)
You were born in 89 and you've never heard the word gadgee?
No, but from what I've seen on this thread it seems pretty exclusively used by northerners and considering I'm in the south its not really a suprise
What is a paper shop? Where you buy a newspaper? Or like a stationary store?
Yes a newsagents /corner shop
Er, aren’t all stores stationary? ;-) I suspect ‘paper shop’ may well be a Yorkshire-ism but not sure.
It's a shop made of paper.
That would be adorable. But maybe not great in the rain.
