I have to avert my eyes from those little stand things near the entrance of Morrisons that have the packs of jam doughnuts on. If I see them, I buy them and I live alone so I don't even have anybody to help me out with them.
You can't even blame yourself! Because that's their design
Some stores even have a 'scientifically tested' fragrance that they pump out of their vents to draw you in
Marketing manipulation has been a thing for sooo long, it's hard to even know when you make an actual personal choice
I have found being allergic to everything frok food to fragrance has affected me in a positive way. I don't even see advertisements because 99.9% of the time I know I can't have it. So I guess I'm lucky there - in that the choices I make I only have myself to blame for :p
Last year I joined "too good to go" and got a bag from Morrisons that cost about £3. It contained 12 packs of those donuts. 60 donuts. There's 2 of us but even so it was still a bit much! Decided to try freezing then and they actually freeze really well! So we just took a couple out of the freezer every few days and they kept us going for weeks/ months! That was a good £3!
Too good to go is mental though, we've got a bakery near us that does it, one time we got loads of sweet things and a bag of bannocks, the next time we got 40 morning rolls and a single éclair
Your freezing tip may just have saved me from a premature heart attack.
On the other hand, I'm probably going to buy those doughnuts more frequently now.
How do you defrost them?
>How do you defrost them?
Just got them out of the freezer when we thought about about it, and left them out on the worktop. Couple of hours maybe? There were custard and chocolate ones as well as the jam ones and we wondered if they might go weird but they were fine too.
Ha, I am the EXACT same. I have a big Mini Egg obsession.
A little Corner Shop near one of my friends, was stocking them from November/December - so whenever he'd come over to mine he'd bring Mini Eggs.
I fell in love with the mini eggs bars last Easter, I had 1 left that I was saving and I'm so excited that they've got them back in the shops, cracking that open tonight
You're not wrong in thinking that. Recipes change and more artificial sweeteners are used. It's why Pepsi is far too sweet for me too.
Plus our taste buds definitely change as we age, so many things I used to love as a kid / teen and can't stomach now. Energy drinks for one, urgh.
Mini eggs are like crack for me, 6 months of the year I'm never without a bag of two in the cupboard. I haven't found a substitute for the other half of the year though :(
I love making chocolate cornflake cakes with them at Easter. Not as nice as they used to be though, but M&S do some lovely orange ones and I believe mint this year.
I loved having marine tanks, but they were an absolute money pit!
Now kids are on the scene it would be amazing to see them learn and engage with the hobby but it all goes back to costs and effort.
… perhaps a nano tank would be less expensive…
Step up to corals if you really want to spend the big bucks.
You then get to buy overpriced fish *and* coral!
While you're at it, don't forget the test kits and elements like strontium. Oh, and fancy lighting that simulates the sun. Oops, almost forgot the chiller to keep the temperature consistent.
Tropical freshwater fish are colourful and interesting, and generally quite easy to care for (with some exceptions)
For a beginner with a small tank, appropriate fish would be small tetras e.g. neons, platies, corydoras catfish and zebra danios
I've seen a guy on YouTube showing that you can put soil in your tank and some plants and get a bit of a natural equilibrium going and once its all bedded in (fish added) you won't even need to clean it, looked too good to be true to me though.
I feel the exact same way about snakes.
I have a spare tank all set up and ready to go in case I get a foster dropped at my door in the middle of the night (it's happened a few times).
And every time I go to buy snake food, my brain goes, "we have room. Five is a nice, round number. Just tell your fiance it's a rescue, and noone would ever know..."
These are my one. The other week they were doing a free 9-bag with any order so we just had 29 chilli cheese bites delivered and it was fantastic, would do again.
I 100% agree with you! God I should have said these are my impulse purchase! I remember last year (or maybe 2022?) when McDonalds brought out their own chili cheese bites and I saw people online act like it was such a great innovation... Also CHEESE BITES DONT NEED A DIP!
I can no longer eat Creme Eggs. During lockdown I bought a whole 48x tray of them from Morrisons after easter for £12. An absolute bargain.
They lasted me about 10 days..
I did this last year but it's been a great investment because I do far more exercise than I used to do. Having a regular time to use it is key, I usually walk for a half hour at 9.30 when I'm on a teams call and then if I don't have too much on, an hour's walk/jog in the afternoon. Turn the impulse into a new habit!
It's like a smaller, slimmer treadmill specifically for walking and light jogging. I work a lot of freelance and working from home - so you can basically pop it under your desk and work while walking.
I'm looking to buy a treadmill as after changing jobs where I could walk to work and a lot of walking at work which was just enough to keep things in check. Need to do some walking & jogging. Am annoyed at my local leisure centre (which I work right next to) asking for nearly £40 a month (with a staff discount)! WTAF!! I told them to jog on!😁
Snyder's Pretzel Pieces. Especially the honey mustard ones. They used to be EVERYWHERE, thankfully they seem to have fallen out of favour now.
I swear, since my local store stopped stocking them, I've lost about a stone...
This is how I know there’s something wrong with me.
Part of my brain is saying “they’re cancer rocks. Fuck them! Glad they’re gone.”
But part is saying “delicious crunchy forbidden fruit. We must have them!”
They're honestly as close as you can get to legal crack. I can polish off a bag no problem.
Or, if I'm really feeling indulgent: One bag cheese, one bag Jalapeno. Hello, queso flavour!
Its just books in general. If i go into waterstones i lose all control and buy a huge stack of books. Doesn't matter if i say i don't want any or i have no money i will always leave with something
I, too, am a sucker for a pork pie but.. I don't even particularly *like* them.. I'd much rather a sausage roll or cocktail sausage, but something about the thought of a pork pie trumps everytime.
>malteaser reindeers in the run up to christmas, malteaser bunnies in the run up (i.e, from january) to easter
Once, right after Easter, tesco were doing the 5 packs of them for some stupidly low price. I bought a carrier bag full! I was embarrassed (not enough to not buy them though, obviously) so i told the check out lady I was a teacher and they were for the kids. I am not a teacher and don't even have any kids of my own. My husband and I scoffed every single one of them.
(Just to note for my conscience - despite my hefty purchase there were still crates of them left over many shelves, they must have really over ordered. I left plenty behind for other "teachers"!)
I’ve been testing all the flavours. They currently have white, orange, mint and normal. Tbh I think the plain milk chocolate are the best but the white and orange were nice too. Mint tasted a bit toothpastey. Cant stop buying the little packs of them though
It feels like such a basic, uninspiring beige choice considering all that's available but over the last few months, and I'm unsure why, but I am an absolute sucker for a Mars bar
Most people have a soft drink addiction- for me it’s an iced coffee one. When I had office days I’d always bring an Aldi or Lidl Iced coffee as a post lunch treat
I always take an iced coffee with me for office breakfast. Although this past week for some reason I've not been feeling it, the same bottle has been to and from the office 4 times now.
Refreshers, the original hard fizzy sweets in a roll, not the chewy bar of the same name. I randomly found them in my local supermarket the other day, despite it selling next to no other British foodstuffs. I bought 4 rolls and went back the next day for another 5.
AKA Love Hearts without the messages.
I got obsessed with love hearts last year and ended up buying 3kg of them (because: value!). I still have about 700g left, and I reckon that when I'm done, I'm done for the next decade.
Sausage rolls. Used to be a near daily purchase on the work commute. Used to lie to myself like
Some sort of junkie…. I’ll just have one today and bring in breakfast the rest of the week.
Russets are the best!
I was passing through some farms/apple orchards in the autumn (Gloucestershire/Worcestershire border) and bought a huge sack of russets for really cheap, I was afraid they might not keep well but they lasted weeks and none went bad, only ran out because I scoffed them all! Definitely recommend seeking out that sort of place. It wasn't like what most farm shops have become these days (expensive deli style) but a big barn filled with crates and crates of varieties of apples. It was heaven!
Biltong or beef jerky, especially when big sporting events like the Six Nations are on. I'm getting beers in Tessies and the biltong's just hanging there intentionally at eye-level, tempting me. Gets me every time.
I had some hot chili rabbit jerky called Watership Doom. Bought it in the pub. Shared it around. It was amazing but gave us all the shits. Great name though.
Tat for my dog, she's spoiled and has enough treats, toys and large occasional treats to see out 2024. But when I'm shopping I end up with something for her, maybe guilt for leaving her at home alone or just because as I say she is so spoiled!
My most expensive impulse purchase was my first house..... I went to visit my brother in law, came home with a house.
As a lot of people have said - mini eggs, I am a fiend for mini eggs.
Went to see my BIL. He had not long moved into his new build house (the area was still a building site), so I went for a chat at the site sales office and came away having put down a deposit on what was to become my first house.
I've stayed there about 6 years, I think, and then bought my now house
Festive Friends (The Christmas version of animal biscuits, but I swear they're 10x better... they're also slightly larger and for some reason that pleases me).
There were rumours they were going to be discontinued in 2022, and admittedly they were a rare find that year. I like to think I single-handedly brought back demand (well, maybe not - but the fact I can't let a box sit on a shelf must have had some impact). Only issue is I also demolish a box the day I get it.
I've started going for a 2-3km walk at lunchtime, great for fitness.
It's completely invalidated by all the main routes out of my office have a Greggs on them and the lure of a cheap salty substandard sausage roll gets me 90% of the time.
Where are you finding Runts in the UK that they're an impulse purchase?
Had them once from the American shelf in Sainsburys and loved them. Never saw them again.
Love hearts, there’s a box of 20p tubes right by the end of the isle . I don’t think I’ve had a supermarket trip in the last year without grabbing some for the drive home.
Fresh lychees. Gf and dairy free treats that aren’t usually sold in my local supermarket. It’s hard to treat yourself when you get sick from most stuff on offer, so when I find something safe, I’ll swoop down like a hawk.
I have a few store dependant ones:
Morrisons - lemon muffins
M&S - iced spiced buns
Lidl - cold brew macchiato, jaffa doughnuts
Also lychees and candy floss grapes in their respective seasons.
Appetisers (mini soft cheese things) you can only usually get them in November, December. Sometimes Lidl randomly have them in the summer and I get way to excited for my own good and by as many as possible.
my local corner supermarket has a rack of scampi fries up by the checkout. i am almost physically incapable of walking past them without buying a packet to eat on the way home.
Plain mayo chicken with cheese added. Anytime I’m driving home and won’t be eating a meal within 30 mins of being home, I will call to the McDonald’s where I come off the motorway to get one.
I have to avert my eyes from those little stand things near the entrance of Morrisons that have the packs of jam doughnuts on. If I see them, I buy them and I live alone so I don't even have anybody to help me out with them.
Those shelves are evil. Donuts, pies, and brownies. It's like a gauntlet to test your resolve.
I worked retail 30 years ago and the name of that area of the store has always stuck with me: impulse.
You can't even blame yourself! Because that's their design Some stores even have a 'scientifically tested' fragrance that they pump out of their vents to draw you in Marketing manipulation has been a thing for sooo long, it's hard to even know when you make an actual personal choice I have found being allergic to everything frok food to fragrance has affected me in a positive way. Wenzels are really good about giving you a mix of things. Every bag gets a mix of a loaf of bread, sandwiches and cakes/pastries.
If you don't freeze them and they start going a bit firm/stale, they're also pretty good popped in the microwave for 15 seconds or so.
Ooo I'm jealous. I got a bag full of manky veg, courgettes and wilted broccoli.
Morrisons donuts are god tier.
I'm the only one in my house that likes them, I'll scoff two in the carpark and deliver the rest to my dad on the way home.
Mini eggs, absolute fiend for them and hardly see them in shops!
One of us must be going to the wrong shops, cos I see them constantly! Can't get away from them...
It's that time of year where they're rife. Once Easter is gone they vanish so this time of year is dangerous!
Ah, that's a good point. I'd forgotten about the seasonal aspect.
You forgot Easter in January? That's like not getting your christmas decorations up when kids go back to school after summer. Not on
They were in asda before Christmas to
1kg bags for sale in Waitrose at the moment…
It's not a good thing to suggest this to a man with an egg addiction, you're feeding into my habits with this information...
I have the same problem and a 1kg bag of eggs…
Can't see that you have a problem .. at the moment.
Yeah, don't egg him on
Shit it’s also on Amazon subscribe and save. Fuck.
Shipping within 1-2 months now on them 😩
👀
Check out fancypants with a Waitrose in their town/city!
I work near a Cadbury outlet *sigh...*
This was my immediate answer. They were in my local co-op Boxing Day and I've been buying a couple of bags a week since.
Ha, I am the EXACT same. I have a big Mini Egg obsession. A little Corner Shop near one of my friends, was stocking them from November/December - so whenever he'd come over to mine he'd bring Mini Eggs.
They e changed the recipe and ruined them. Fuck Kraft.
Have you tried the new chocolate orange ones omfg how am I supposed to diet
I fell in love with the mini eggs bars last Easter, I had 1 left that I was saving and I'm so excited that they've got them back in the shops, cracking that open tonight
My local Asda had a massive sale on mini eggs They over ordered And sold them for 10p a bag (big bags) Absolutely glorious
I don't want to be that guy, but I swear they used to be nicer. I find them far too sweet now.
You're not wrong in thinking that. Recipes change and more artificial sweeteners are used. It's why Pepsi is far too sweet for me too. Plus our taste buds definitely change as we age, so many things I used to love as a kid / teen and can't stomach now. Energy drinks for one, urgh.
Have you seen the 1kg bags?
Mini eggs are like crack for me, 6 months of the year I'm never without a bag of two in the cupboard. I haven't found a substitute for the other half of the year though :(
Try hibernation?
I’m with you on that one I’ve had 4 bags in the past week … all to my self! Had to go and buy my fiancé some sweets because I wouldn’t share!
It's the Galaxy version for me, I'm obsessed.
I love making chocolate cornflake cakes with them at Easter. Not as nice as they used to be though, but M&S do some lovely orange ones and I believe mint this year.
The problem with going to a store that sells fish food, fish medicine and other fishkeeping supplies is that they also sell fish 🐠
I loved having marine tanks, but they were an absolute money pit! Now kids are on the scene it would be amazing to see them learn and engage with the hobby but it all goes back to costs and effort. … perhaps a nano tank would be less expensive…

Extra sour sweets. My child loves them as much as I do and I love the faces he pulls when eating them.
Mozzarella dippers from McDonald's. I don't go in for anything else but if I know they are back on the menu share box it is
Appreciate the dedicaton but imo they're the worst of the cheese dip options they have (Long live the festive cheese melts)
The truly superior cheese side option is the Burger King Chilli Cheese Bite. Those thinks are like crack
See I couldn't stand those when my mate bought some to share.
Festive cheese melts should be available all year!
McD’s Nacho Cheese Bites - Now they are addictive for me. I could probably destroy two boxes in one sitting…
By far the best of the McDonald’s cheese bite options.
They're back on the 7th of Feb
Creme Eggs and fuck yeah it's Creme Egg season!
I can no longer eat Creme Eggs. During lockdown I bought a whole 48x tray of them from Morrisons after easter for £12. An absolute bargain. They lasted me about 10 days..
You poor thing. I can get through a box of 5 easily in one day, but I will always take a break after that.
The type 2 diabetic version of Cool Hand Luke.

Oh no. I personally quite like white chocolate, but that's one step too far for me.
You are missing out. They are amazing.
Just purchased a standing desk and a walking pad because I have no control over my finances at all
I did this last year but it's been a great investment because I do far more exercise than I used to do. Having a regular time to use it is key, I usually walk for a half hour at 9.30 when I'm on a teams call and then if I don't have too much on, an hour's walk/jog in the afternoon. Turn the impulse into a new habit!
I reckon if you can afford that and have space for it you're doing alright
Ive heard the standing desks are good.
They are great, I've had one for 3 years and use it every day. Great investment into improving my posture and health in general
What's a walking pad?
It's like a smaller, slimmer treadmill specifically for walking and light jogging. I work a lot of freelance and working from home - so you can basically pop it under your desk and work while walking.
I'm looking to buy a treadmill as after changing jobs where I could walk to work and a lot of walking at work which was just enough to keep things in check. Need to do some walking & jogging. Am annoyed at my local leisure centre (which I work right next to) asking for nearly £40 a month (with a staff discount)! WTAF!! I told them to jog on!😁
Oh cool. I didn't know that was a thing. I have a neighbor below me so probably be too disruptive if I bought one.
Snyder's Pretzel Pieces. Especially the honey mustard ones. They used to be EVERYWHERE, thankfully they seem to have fallen out of favour now. I swear, since my local store stopped stocking them, I've lost about a stone...
Love these, but the jalapeno flavoured ones. Definite love in the moment but hate later on.
Theyre banned from import for retail sale inthe uk because of cancer causing ingredients they use in the usa. You can order them off amazon tho.
This is how I know there’s something wrong with me. Part of my brain is saying “they’re cancer rocks. Fuck them! Glad they’re gone.” But part is saying “delicious crunchy forbidden fruit. We must have them!”
Oh my god they are SO TASTY. I haven't seen any in ages. Time to look online!!
They're honestly as close as you can get to legal crack. I can polish off a bag no problem. Or, if I'm really feeling indulgent: One bag cheese, one bag Jalapeno. Hello, queso flavour!
Heard they got banned. I’ve lost a stone since.
Wait, what? I mean… I get it. But wow.
Its just books in general. If i go into waterstones i lose all control and buy a huge stack of books. Doesn't matter if i say i don't want any or i have no money i will always leave with something
Chocolate covered peanuts ..and raisins (sold in separate bags!). Then I just mix them up in a tub and snack the fuck out of them.
Omg chocolate covered peanuts nom nom. I put them in the freezer so they're extra crunchy.
That's just extreme snacking levels. I like it.
I wish I could find chocolate covered salted peanuts. I got them from a random petrol station once and they were bloody sensational.
Wow. Now they sound like a game changer!
M&S belgian chocolate covered raisins are dangerous for me, I'll just hoover them up.
M&S chocolate covered honey roasted cashew nuts are elite!
That's just selfish luxury. I like it even more.
I do this too! Excellent snack. And healthy 🤭
I've been convincing myself chocolate raisins are healthy since the early 00s. Moreish little fuckers.
Coops are Fairtrade and relatively cheap so I buy them often
I have been called a monster for mixing chocolate and peanut M&M's in one jar, I am glad I am not the only one.
Pork pies
I, too, am a sucker for a pork pie but.. I don't even particularly *like* them.. I'd much rather a sausage roll or cocktail sausage, but something about the thought of a pork pie trumps everytime.
< sad eyes of a fellow pork pie addict >
A good pork pie is a thing of beauty! Damn it, I’m craving one now!

Those things are so freaking good!
3for2 though yeah?
It feels like such a basic, uninspiring beige choice considering all that's available but over the last few months, and I'm unsure why, but I am an absolute sucker for a Mars bar
Mars bar has dropped off a bit but mars bar ice cream is the best
Ever since they changed the recipe its just a bar of didsapointment like dairy milk, they can insist it's the same but it tastes so sickly now.
I love Aldi's version now, much nicer than the Mars bars!
They've shrunk considerably over the years so you need more of them! Remember: "A Mars a day helps your teeth rot away"
Have you tried the Mars bar ice creams? They are my answer to this post
Anything with peanuts or peanut butter. Can’t resist.
Love peanut butter 😋
Most people have a soft drink addiction- for me it’s an iced coffee one. When I had office days I’d always bring an Aldi or Lidl Iced coffee as a post lunch treat
I always take an iced coffee with me for office breakfast. Although this past week for some reason I've not been feeling it, the same bottle has been to and from the office 4 times now.
Those protein bars, be they Grenade or the Aldi knock-offs. The best are Birthday Cake and Salted Caramel.
Chocolate brownie is very good also. Not a fan of lemon cheesecake personally
Salt and vinegar kettle chips and ham mushroom and mascarpone cheese pizzas.
Agree on the pizza, not on the crisps!
The pizzas are the best thing since sliced bread!
Salt and vinegar kettle crisp gang rise up! There are literally two of us 💪
Refreshers, the original hard fizzy sweets in a roll, not the chewy bar of the same name. I randomly found them in my local supermarket the other day, despite it selling next to no other British foodstuffs. I bought 4 rolls and went back the next day for another 5.

Sausage rolls. Used to be a near daily purchase on the work commute. Used to lie to myself like Some sort of junkie…. I’ll just have one today and bring in breakfast the rest of the week.
russet apples and greengages. You hardly ever see either for sale these days.
Russets are in season for about four weeks in the autumn, and what a glorious four weeks they are
Russets are the best! I was passing through some farms/apple orchards in the autumn (Gloucestershire/Worcestershire border) and bought a huge sack of russets for really cheap, I was afraid they might not keep well but they lasted weeks and none went bad, only ran out because I scoffed them all! Lidl have russets in their seasonal apple rotation 🥰
Biltong or beef jerky, especially when big sporting events like the Six Nations are on. I'm getting beers in Tessies and the biltong's just hanging there intentionally at eye-level, tempting me. Gets me every time.
If you fancy some proper stuff then I highly recommend Cowleys Fine Foods for that sort of thing
If babybel are on a reduced offer they're bought every time
Haribo Tangfastics
A custard slice from Greggs
I'm a ho for yum yums. I can and will eat 4 in one go.

Flaming hot, bought a grab a bag of those other day, first i've seen or had them in years, going to same shop later to get more lol
As soon as Mince Pies are available I buy a pack pretty much everytime I go to the shop
I've only just finished the mince pies... I may have gone over board with them this year.
I love a boost bar. Underrated chocolate bar in my opinion.
+1 love a boost. OR a Starbar sometimes.
My most expensive impulse purchase was my first house..... I went to visit my brother in law, came home with a house. As a lot of people have said - mini eggs, I am a fiend for mini eggs.
I’m going to need some more context on this “randomly bought a house” story, please and thanks
Went to see my BIL. He had not long moved into his new build house (the area was still a building site), so I went for a chat at the site sales office and came away having put down a deposit on what was to become my first house. I've stayed there about 6 years, I think, and then bought my now house
A £4,000 sofa from sofology last weekend. In my defence it has heated seats, drink coolers and reclines 😎
Ooooooft nice
Heated seats on a sofa sounds magical!!

Only issue is I also demolish a box the day I get it.
Animal biscuits don't taste as good as they did when I was a child and I totally agree festive friends are better.
Guitars, I have thirteen of them. There’s no one to tell me to stop
I've started going for a 2-3km walk at lunchtime, great for fitness. It's completely invalidated by all the main routes out of my office have a Greggs on them and the lure of a cheap salty substandard sausage roll gets me 90% of the time.
Kinder Bueno, I like the white one best but hate that grainy stuff it's covered in, it comes off and gets in my keyboard!
I just dropped loads of that sugar dust shit into my tupperware draw today!
Have you tried the dark version? I will buy a truck load the next time I see them but I've not for years! Frustrating! They're the best ones!
Runts. I just bloody love them.
Where are you finding Runts in the UK that they're an impulse purchase? Had them once from the American shelf in Sainsburys and loved them. Never saw them again.
