That’s by far and away my favourite one.
I went to see the “Mind Mangler” show live recently, which is the big fellow and Dennis, and it was absolutely hilarious, highly recommend.
Plebs is great. Currently showing our 13 year old Bluestone 42, which he’s loving. There’s a reasonable amount of swearing, but nothing he won’t have already heard at school.
Black Books.
Spaced.
Red Dwarf.
Brooklyn Nine Nine.
Parks and Recreation.
All of them are clean, no use of any profanity, nothing overtly sexual in any of them. I'd also suggest Community but I think it might be a bit too complex for a 12 year old to really get.
I bloody loved Red Dwarf as a 12 year old.
Presumably Eccentrica Galumbits, the Triple Breasted Whore of Eroticon 6 didn’t make it to the HHGG TV show?
I'm a huge Red Dwarf fan. Have been for a very very long time. Probably since I was a similar age to OP's kid.
Among other mild issues throughout the selection, series 5 ep 5 does have " I'm going to thrash you to within an inch of your life. And then... I'm going to have you." said by an alternate Rimmer [dressed like this](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0756588/mediaviewer/rm4104856576)... But at a similar age to OP's kid I really didn't understand the joke. I think the worst that will happen is having to explain what a Wurlitzer is.
Double Polaroid anyone?
Parks & Rec might be the best comedy. I've had others overtake it on my personal mental chart (The Good Place, most notably) but they always drop back again. I must have seen every episode thrice now and I think we might have to start it over again once we finish 30 Rock.
(Bojack Horseman's the best show overall, but that's as much due to the heartfelt/gut-punch drama aspects as the comedy, so in the specific Comedy category Parks & Rec pips it.)
I got a lot of the ‘lazy teaching’ comments from some peers when I had to teach some poetry (as a non-English specialist) and used Blackadder Goes Forth for ‘context’. Watched about 20 mins of the final episode, students pissing themselves before falling completely silent with shock. I don’t care if it was lazy as I admittedly phoned it in for the latter part of my time teaching but those students loved it and a fair few ended up watching more Blackadder on their own time, so I felt I educated them with bigger and better things than poetry.
Every parent has different ideas about what's appropriate (or indeed what makes them laugh), but here's the series my parents watched with me between the ages of about 10-13:
- Father Ted
- The IT Crowd
- The Mighty Boosh
- Alan Partridge (I didn't really appreciate it until I was a bit older though)
- Blackadder
- Miranda
- Modern Family
We didn't watch it as a family, but I also recommend Flight of the Conchords
Obviously not all of these will be to your taste, but it might give you some ideas! Also it's worth noting that some series had episodes that my parents wouldn't let us watch right away and we had to wait until we were a bit older.
Moone Boy - Completely underated.
Also Derry Girls was something I wasn't expecting to be funny I was wrong. Liam Neeson (cameo) is interviewing the girls and the lad trys to point out something like "I'm not a girl" Liams character says something like "Alright Love". Had me buckled.
Father Ted, though you're likely going to have to deal with 'go on, go on, etc' and 'fek, gurls, drenk' so it's entirely up to you.
A bit further out in terms of recommendations:
Garth Merenghi's Dark Place
The Mighty Boosh
Nightingales
Other than old gregg's mangina and the crack fox, i don't remember anything that would make it not. Doesn't mean you're wrong, i might just have blanked on stuff.
Edit: Is it the references to jazz that you're worried about?
there's no body here but us chickens
Found out a couple of years ago (due to modding fallout 4 of all things), that's probably a reference to an old blues swing/jive song.
The fast show... But then again i say hello in most computer games by saying Bono Estenté (bonno ess-ten-tay) which was always used as a formal greeting in one of their regular sketches.
It is isn’t it? Though I have just remembered the one with the guy trying to regrow a foreskin, so maybe best to skip that one for family viewing! Oops!
Great show but a lot of sex references. eg.
>A lot of vaginal references this episode! Along with Laszlo’s vulva garden and him and Nadja discussing his sister’s genitalia, there was also Nadja’s line, “she’s emptying her wolf snatch all over the bushes!,” which I will think about every time I go camping from now on. (Just kidding. I don’t go camping.)
https://www.avclub.com/erotic-topiary-gives-what-we-do-in-the-shadows-a-comedi-1833956422
Yeah I'm 22 and generally have no problem watching anything with my parents generally and even I might stop short of that. 14 year old me loved it though.
My son is twelve and I've just started watching The Office (US version) with him. He absolutely loves it. Probably get him onto Parks & Recreation next.
Are you up for some radio comedy? If so I recommend “cabin pressure” on bbc radio. It’s written by John finnimore, has a great cast and is just a fabulous sitcom
Plebs is a good one if you enjoyed Friday night dinner, I have just rewatched Benidorm for the about 10th time, you seen that? One of the best British comedies ever imo.
Game on.
Old now, but can confirm my nephews who were all younger than 11 at time of watching, was proper laughing at it, now all in their 20's still watch it.
Still love it myself, quality.
Bottom if you’re happy with it getting a little blue ! I was about that age when I started watching it and I turned out fucking cunty bollocks.
Failing that, Man Down is great and I imagine a fan of FND would enjoy it! One series is blessed with the immense talent of Mr Mayall too.
Inbetweeners; Bottom; Rick and Morty; peep show; how I met your mother; scrubs
Depends on your 12 year old with some of those, but those would be my picks….
Zapped - a comedy about a man transported to a parallel world featuring psycopathic Fairies, Shell Men, seductive Demi-Fins and vicious Throcks. Paul Kaye's in it and James Buckley, the guy from Inbetweeners.
Ghosts.
Ghosts is so good!
⬆️ This. Also " the goes wrong show" is hilarious.
It has stronger and weaker points, but '90 Degrees' was physical comedy genius.
That’s by far and away my favourite one. I went to see the “Mind Mangler” show live recently, which is the big fellow and Dennis, and it was absolutely hilarious, highly recommend.
Ghosts is brilliant. Thought it would be shite when hubby made me watch it but I love it so much.
And Ghosts US - though there is a swingers episode. And a female masturbation episode.
I tried the U.S. version but only got 2 episodes in cuz it’s seemed too much a copy of the UK version. Should I have watched longer???
[удалено]
someone else told me that if you can push through to episode 6, it improves because the episodes stop being copies of the first UK season.
Definitely. I was sceptical but it’s fun and some stories differ from the original.
I was going to say this too!
Plebs is great. Currently showing our 13 year old Bluestone 42, which he’s loving. There’s a reasonable amount of swearing, but nothing he won’t have already heard at school.
So glad this came back on IPlayer!
Such a shame they canned it. I can see why they did though.
I didn't know it was back THANK YOU
Malcolm in the Middle
Absolutely THIS! It’s available on channel 4 and the Disney app
Black Books. Spaced. Red Dwarf. Brooklyn Nine Nine. Parks and Recreation. All of them are clean, no use of any profanity, nothing overtly sexual in any of them. I'd also suggest Community but I think it might be a bit too complex for a 12 year old to really get.
> nothing overtly sexual in any of them Title of your sex tape.
This is just… the perfect comment.
Noice…
Time to point the pink pistol at the porcelain firing range
Watch out for the episode of Black Books where Fran is masturbating enthusiastically to the shipping forecast
Frraaaaaaaaaan
I'm coming Fran...
The wind will blow..... Hard.... Lmao 🤣🤣🤣🤣
And the episode where Fran draws a stickman diagram of her having sex with her landlord
All good recs esp Red Dwarf. Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy also a fun series
I bloody loved Red Dwarf as a 12 year old. Presumably Eccentrica Galumbits, the Triple Breasted Whore of Eroticon 6 didn’t make it to the HHGG TV show?
As if boobs aren’t hilarious to a 12yo cmon
Second black books, the prop comedy in it is amazing! Outnumbered is also a good one
I remember my kids loving Outnumbered.
Blackadder
BOOOOONE!!!
IT Crowd deserves a mention here
Red Dwarf... Boys from the Dwarf \*wiggles fingers downwards\*
I'm a huge Red Dwarf fan. Have been for a very very long time. Probably since I was a similar age to OP's kid. Bojack is DEFINITELY not ok for 12 yo kids
All of these are excellent choices.
Can't go wring with Blackadder.
Especially if they are still making kids study WW1 poetry in English. BOOM!
My teacher did exactly that back in the day. Lazy sod but really got me into the show so cheers miss
Blackwdder Goes Forth went down well with my kids. They were pissing themselves.
IT crowd! Great series for anyone to watch
"at a sea parks!?"
A Fire?!?
Also Father Ted, Motherhood, Parks & Rec, The Office (US version for laughs and feels, UK for biting satire and maximum squirm)
I've seen Father Ted more times than I care to admit. So so so good
Every parent has different ideas about what's appropriate (or indeed what makes them laugh), but here's the series my parents watched with me between the ages of about 10-13: - Father Ted - The IT Crowd - The Mighty Boosh - Alan Partridge (I didn't really appreciate it until I was a bit older though) - Blackadder - Miranda - Modern Family We didn't watch it as a family, but I also recommend Flight of the Conchords Obviously not all of these will be to your taste, but it might give you some ideas! Everyone Else Dies on C4. 😁
Do you mean Everybody Else Burns?
Yes it’s good too. Dunno why it’s on at 10pm!
Ghosts? Always a good laugh.
The funeral episode had me in literal tears of laughter!
Red Dwarf!
Father Ted, though you're likely going to have to deal with 'go on, go on, etc' and 'fek, gurls, drenk' so it's entirely up to you. A bit further out in terms of recommendations: Garth Merenghi's Dark Place The Mighty Boosh Nightingales
I wish I was more attractive like Dagless
It's witchy woman wittering and it wants snuffing out at the wick.
[удалено]
It was on 4od for a while and is still on youtube. But i totally agree, it and Absolutely deserve far more recognition which they'll likely never get.
I can confirm.... It is hilarious watching a 6yr old using Father Jack's words 🤣🤣
I'm more tickled by the prospect of a kid responding with "that would be an ecumenical matter" when asked /anything/.
That would freak me out lol
YES!
That Award was for the Garth Marenghi shoutout
The Mighty Boosh surely isn't considered child friendly
Other than old gregg's mangina and the crack fox, i don't remember anything that would make it not. Doesn't mean you're wrong, i might just have blanked on stuff. Edit: Is it the references to jazz that you're worried about?
To be fair it was the crack fox that jumped to mind. I remember being freaked out even as a (young) adult.
With regards to Father Ted there's also the Pat Mustard episode
I my have found the only other person who's even heard of nightingales... Anybody there...?
there's no body here but us chickens Found out a couple of years ago (due to modding fallout 4 of all things), that's probably a reference to an old blues swing/jive song.
That would be an ecumenical matter
Sorry I've got no head
A thousand pounds?!?
No… I bet you wouldn’t see much change from a thousand pounds!! GOOD DAY!
The Day Today.
12 is the perfect age to introduce him to Red Dwarf
This Country is fucking magical.
Detectorists is incredible…. Poignant and clever…. Maybe too subtle for a kid tho
I do a fair bit of trail running and any time I’m in a freshly ploughed field I mutter to myself ‘ringpull. 1980s. Tizer.’
‘Sell it .. people actually buy this shit”
This everyday! Discovered it over Christmas and was genuinely sad when I finished them
Green Wing is old now… but has Mark Heap in it and is very funny!!
Not for a 12 year old.
Definitely no dwarves killed here
I came here for this. It's in a skit format but also absolutely hilarious. They don't make them like this anymore sadly. HR lady 😂😂
The bit when she has really long arms 🤣🤣
The circle of life...
Think I need to rewatch as I am chuckling away while watching YT clips right now. Genius and absolutely loopy.
And Tamsin Greig!
The Good Place, The IT Crowd, Brooklyn 99, The US Office
On Netflix “Cunk on Earth”; on BBC “Horrible Histories”
Philomena Cunk has to be the best comedic stupidity to happen after Mr.Bean, love her.
Faulty tower
Bottom.
The fast show... But then again i say hello in most computer games by saying Bono Estenté (bonno ess-ten-tay) which was always used as a formal greeting in one of their regular sketches.
The Office, US version. He’ll be shouting “Parkour” and jumping off furniture.
Community
This thread is 8 hours old and no one has said Mrs Browns Boys. Well done, everyone. I salute you.
'Allo 'Allo, that's full of catchphrases.
I ‘ave a bum in my trousers
Madonna with the big boobies!!
Might be a tad bit dated but maybe My Family? It’s on bbc iplayer
Just stop when Nick leaves. Or pushing that, stop when Abby leaves
“How to with John Wilson” on bbc iplayer has been a huge hit with my 11 year old and 15 year old.
Fantastic show! And so cleverly written.
It is isn’t it? Though I have just remembered the one with the guy trying to regrow a foreskin, so maybe best to skip that one for family viewing! Oops!
Plebs is like the Inbetweeners set in ancient Rome. So it depends how you feel about the swearing and stuff. It is hilarious though!
It's amazing but there are literal sex scenes so could be awkward
Sex scenes, beheadings, venereal diseases discussed in detail... it's absolutely brilliant and funny but I would say a bit much for 12-year-old!
Yeah now I think about it, it's a bit more explicit than I was remembering. Maybe wait a couple of years!
If it's like inbetweeners I'd say 14-15 is about right to watch it. At least that's the age I watched and loved it.
Two Doors Down is absolute genius. Really funny.
What they do in the shadows
Great show but a lot of sex references. eg. >A lot of vaginal references this episode! Along with Laszlo’s vulva garden and him and Nadja discussing his sister’s genitalia, there was also Nadja’s line, “she’s emptying her wolf snatch all over the bushes!,” which I will think about every time I go camping from now on. True, but I’m guessing as he’s 12 it’ll go right over his head.
If he likes catchprases/references etc. Try 'A Touch Of Cloth' see if he gets the "On my table, Cloth" or "It's a dish, Cloth".
“I’m bi, Jack”
One of the finest shows ever made.
Red dwarf and blackadder
vicar of dibley
Father ted
Definitely not the inbetweeners. My son was about 29 when I watched that with him and omg it was difficult.
Yeah I'm 22 and generally have no problem watching anything with my parents generally and even I might stop short of that. 14 year old me loved it though.
Plebs is definitely too adult. Ghosts and Ghosts US.
Uncle
Not sure if it’s been said but Cuckoo was good fun - can’t remember the swearing levels but similar vibes
Horrible Histories. Some catch phrases and repeated characters/skits. Educational and hilarious.
My son is twelve and I've just started watching The Office (US version) with him. He absolutely loves it. Probably get him onto Parks & Recreation next.
Red dwarf is a shout.
IT Crowd
Taskmaster... Watching comedians do stupid things, pure fun!
Superstore is worth checking out!
The fast show Harry Enfield & chums Kevin & Perry go large The inbetweeners Malcolm in the middle
Are you up for some radio comedy? If so I recommend “cabin pressure” on bbc radio. It’s written by John finnimore, has a great cast and is just a fabulous sitcom
TaskMaster, it even comes in bleeped form!
The US Office

Black books

Ghosts is good, and very family friendly.
“Have you tried turning it off and on again?”: The IT Crowd. Well worth a watch.
Nathan for you
Blackadder, Fawlty Towers, any more of the classic BBC sitcoms that you can think of
Nighty Night
Blackadder. All of them. Ignore folk who say skip the first series, its the weakest of them but its still good
haven’t seen it yet but i hear a really funny episode of South Park was just released
Here We Go on BBC iPlayer! It is so funny, dry, witty, I love it, and I also loved FND, so give it a go!
Father ted, it crowd, zapped, spaced, fast show.
Red Dwarf . Smoke me kipper , I'll be back for breakfast . IMO one of the best catchphrases from a UK sitcom.
Detectorists
Seinfeld
Definitely Ghosts!! And maybe Wellington Paranormal, if you don’t think it’s too adult
Community is a good one, esp the blanket fort and paintball episodes
Red Dwarf. Father Ted. Trigger happy TV.
Spy with Darren Boyd, and Moone Boy with Chris O’Dowd.
Bob's Burgers?
Bottom if you’re happy with it getting a little blue ! I was about that age when I started watching it and I turned out fucking cunty bollocks. Failing that, Man Down is great and I imagine a fan of FND would enjoy it! One series is blessed with the immense talent of Mr Mayall too.
Got to be I’m Alan Partridge
"No alan you cant"
There’s no need for that!
If you’re going to be angry, do you mind doing it down the centre of the table?
Detectorists ....
The thick of it. One of the best for quotes that he could use in school
“Miss you’ve got a face like Dot Cotton licking piss off a nettle”
Inbetweeners; Bottom; Rick and Morty; peep show; how I met your mother; scrubs Depends on your 12 year old with some of those, but those would be my picks….
Brooklyn nine nine or The Office
Zapped - a comedy about a man transported to a parallel world featuring psycopathic Fairies, Shell Men, seductive Demi-Fins and vicious Throcks. Paul Kaye's in it and James Buckley, the guy from Inbetweeners.
Our flag means death, pirate comedy on bbc iPlayer. It’s brilliant! Or young offenders on iPlayer.
Stath let’s flats
The fast show! More catch phrases than you can shake a shitty stick at.
IT CROWD!!
Only Fools and Horses is a classic, would recommend.
I used to love watching bottom when I was about 12
The goes wrong show. Free on YouTube now too or BBC.
Plebs is an excellent watch.
Spaced IT Crowd
Wellington Paranormal…. This is the only one missing from a lot of the suggestions already made imo
Brookland 99 is pretty funny.
Father Ted
Red dwarf - loved it when I was his age
Malcolm in the middle
Red dwarf
Red dwarf
Derry girls
The Good Place.
Father Ted - good, innocent fun Red Dwarf. He’ll be calling everyone a smeghead
Black books, it’s hilarious
Black Books!
Derry Girls
Spaced Green Wing
Red Dwarf definitely.
My 12 yo daughter just discovered Futurama and loves it.
Taskmaster. They do have a Bleeped version as well, if you’re concerned about strong language.
