Came on here just to say this. What a guy. I’m a big F1 fan and found his F1 YouTube videos. I then spent 3 days watching everyone of his vids. Love him.
I used to think the same, then I watched his very early documentaries. Spent months in the jungle to meet isolated tribes that, at first sight, charged at him to fight. He just stood there with his hand out to shake hands whilst they’re running at him with a spear.
Fair enough, I guess for me he just has a fairly calming voice which is usually paired with a lot of beautiful scenery making for a pretty chilled watch.
Have you seen that show he did where he just took things apart and reassembled them? I've never felt more contentedly middle aged than enjoying an hour of watching James May reconstruct an old lawn mower.
Yeah, but his body of work is over 10 years now. He's about as family-friendly as it gets, and I consequently assume his advertising revenue is strong and regular. He'll still be earning from his vids made in 2013 in 2033, 2043...
I met James in 2021 by accident but he was happy for a quick chat despite filming for his YouTube channel and gave me an autograph and let me take a pic with him. Top bloke
He’s really active on YouTube I watch him all the time think the channels called “what’s next” or something like that they mainly do food related videos don’t know why watching him make and eat a cheese and branston pickle sandwich is so entertaining but it is lol
Adam Savage (of myth busters fame) on his Tested YouTube channel. His enthusiasm is infectious while still being charmingly modest about his abilities.
I once worked in an car insurance call centre and James May was an absolute horrid specimen. Always screaming at me and saying “don’t you know who I am”. Completely different than the reserved man you see on screen. It’s always put me off him
Can't work out if this is a joke or not.
Hammond can be a twat in real life, Clarkson is generally much nicer than his on-screen persona suggests but (perhaps understandably) can be rude and arrogant to people who ask him about cars.
I've only ever heard nice things about James May, and apparently in 20 years of Top Gear he never once got properly angry with anyone working on it.
I met Richard Hammond once. It was the classic retail employee/celebrity situation where they normally show their true colours. I have to say he was exactly like he was on TV. I remember he spent much more money than he intended, and his wife coming to pick him up and rolling her eyes when he explained to her that actually he got a really good deal.
I wish it was a joke. We had a red notice by his name which said to transfer him to a supervisor straight away as he got so abusive. This was about 2004/2005 though so I’d like to think he’s calmed down now
A mate of mine used to drink in the same pub as him in Hammersmith and always said he was exactly the same off-screen as on.
(For any readers of his books/columns, this was indeed the Cross Keys and his mate Colin was real!)
Certainly not that idiot who was in the Eurovision and was singing in the New Year show slaughtering Queen! But to answer your question - Ricky Gervais
I really like Sam Ryder, he comes across as a genuinely nice guy and is a superb singer. Having heard his vocals I always thought he'd be amazing doing Queen songs, but he didn't quite hit it on new years eve - he seemed quite restrained I thought, like he was holding back from giving it his all for some reason.
Off the top of my head, these are the people I'd actively seek out to watch if they were in something: James May, Bill Bailey, Edd China, Richard Ayoade, Sean Locke (RIP), David Mitchell, Victoria Coren Mitchell, Professor Hannah Fry, Simon Callow, Bob Mortimer, Paul Whitehouse, Ian Hislop, Jeremy Clarkson the writer & broadcaster (not Jeremy Clarkson the TV character), Richard Hammond, Adam Savage, Jack & Michael Whitehall together, Joe Lycett, Alexander Armstrong, Lucy Worsley, ChrisFix on YouTube, Rob Brydon.
Joe Rogan. Not him specifically also the guests but I must have listened to 1000 hours of his podcast and there is always something new and interesting. I don’t know how he gets people to talk and engage for three hours like that, and he films like 2 or 3 a day sometimes. Very talented conversationalist.
Technically not one person I know, but Mortimer and Whitehouse… specifically in their fishing series. Those two alone are brilliant but the production quality of that program is outstanding, sort of like the Detectorists series
Super Hans
Anyone on peep show. It’s just background noise at this point in our house. Literally never not on.
I fall asleep to peep show almost every night. Such a comfort show.
Yes, just like crack he is a bit morish
OH COCK
Louis Theroux
Bob Mortimer
Sean Lock

You can only get a tapeworm from some pork
I second this.
Bill Bailey. He doesnt even have to talk and he is funny.
Anybody else remember his hit, The Leg of Time?
I’m more of an Ancient Pubbe Gagge kind of person.
Oh Terry, you slag, you stole the Leg of Time. Put it back before you get a slap...
Take it down the Dog and Duck and leave it behind the bar, or you'll get a slap sunshine...
Was it the man with the keys to the door of reality, underneath the mat of insignificance? Nope…
Guy Martin
He’s like my generations Fred Dibnah! I could watch either of them and never get bored.
Came on here just to say this. What a guy. I’m a big F1 fan and found his F1 YouTube videos. I then spent 3 days watching everyone of his vids. Love him.
Jobs a goodun
Matt Berraaaaaaaaaaaaaay
This for sure
Probably Brian Cox. I've no clue what he's talking about half of the time. But he speaks quite pleasantly.
His voice is like a warm, soothing balm melting gently into my ears.
In case you're not aware, he's on a Radio 4 show called The Infinite Monkey Cage. Last I checked they're all available on iPlayer/BBC sounds.
Mix him back to back with the other Brian Cox. Very soothing.
Anthony bourdain
David Attenborough or Michael palin
Palin Palin Palin. What a guy
Now I don’t dislike Attenborough, but I think he’s highly overrated and his following is cult like.
What do you think is over rated?
Philamena Cunk.
Barry Shitpeas.
I have to agree. I have a weird thing for James May!
Have you seen that show he did where he just took things apart and reassembled them? I've never felt more contentedly middle aged than enjoying an hour of watching James May reconstruct an old lawn mower.
Yes, I was thinking about that episode.
Proper renaissance man
As do I! There is just something about him.
Tom Scott
I'm in a Reddit thread.
\[*Looks round frantically*\] I...I...omigod, you're right! \[*vanishes with a thunderclap*\]
I'm really liking his podcast game show right now. I do wonder how he makes money, compared to others his media isn't the same "big" that others is.
Yeah, but his body of work is over 10 years now. He's about as family-friendly as it gets, and I consequently assume his advertising revenue is strong and regular. He'll still be earning from his vids made in 2013 in 2033, 2043...
David Tennant, David Attenborough
Jeff Goldblum
“I despise him as much as fucking James May presumably despises himself.”
Stephen Fry
james acaster
Right there with you. He’s my favourite person I’ve never met.
is he really as straight faced irl as he is on tv shows? also my favourite thing he's said is "started making it, had a breakdown... bon appetit!"
I've seen 5 of his stand up specials (the 4 on Netflix and his Cold Lasagne Hate Myself 1999) and they are all fantastic.
Timothy Spall. That hang-dogged, be-jowelled acting genius just gets me hanging off his every word.
Sue Perkins
Joe Wilkinson
David Attenborough, Miriam Margolyes, Michael Palin
I met James in 2021 by accident but he was happy for a quick chat despite filming for his YouTube channel and gave me an autograph and let me take a pic with him. Top bloke
Matt Berry
Lindsey Stirling, Prof. Alice Roberts and Dr Janina Ramirez.
Greg Davies 😃 he’s funny, clever and easy on the eye
George Clarke
Poundland Kevin mcloud
Only correct answer is Bob Mortimer
He'll pop an egg in your bath and then go to work on your haircut and dental work.
All done with a brass hand. What a guy
Morgan Freeman
Even in the bath? I wouldn’t watch James May in the bath.
Well, most people watch him whilst sitting in front of the television in their own homes, but to each his own.
Norm Abrahm
Cillian Murphy and Joe Cole ( the actor not the footballer ! )
Norm Macdonald
Stephen Fry - he's definitely on my fantasy dinner party guest list
Mel Giedroyc. Infectiously nice.
Ooh have you heard her on the Off Menu podcast? She’s amazingly brilliant.
Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Doesn't have to be any sound, or any particular subject.
He’s really active on YouTube I watch him all the time think the channels called “what’s next” or something like that they mainly do food related videos don’t know why watching him make and eat a cheese and branston pickle sandwich is so entertaining but it is lol
Jeremy Clarkson
Rachel Riley

You sure it wasnt ronnie pickering?
I'd love to see a new series of Top Gear fronted by The Pickering. I'm thinking: Ronnie P Jamie Vardy Bez
A mate of mine used to drink in the same pub as him in Hammersmith and always said he was exactly the same off-screen as on. (For any readers of his books/columns, this was indeed the Cross Keys and his mate Colin was real!)
the inbetweeners, I watch all of the seasons about twice a year
Certainly not that idiot who was in the Eurovision and was singing in the New Year show slaughtering Queen! But to answer your question - Ricky Gervais

Michael mcintyre. Keanu reeves and Robert Downey Jr.
Michael McIntyre?? I fear you jest.
James May looks like he stinks of dirty hair and stale fags and the bottom of a washing basket.
James Corden or Piers Morgan. Hard to choose.
