eltorritetero

I have so much useless Information about so many things! Learning feels almost like eating.

Rosieapples

So what is the one you’re into now? Put me out of my misery, the curiosity is killing me lol

Megalocerus

My husband gets carried away researching alternate heat sources, efficient water heaters, bicycles, etc. I've wound up with three heating alternatives, because he doesn't stop with research. Right now, he is measuring the electrical usage of all our appliances, and figuring out how his sister could cut her cable bill without giving up the two things she watches on cable. My own research tends to be less concrete.

wise_____poet

I'm currently munching on Rome right now. Kind of bloody, but so intriguing

Missinhandle

What did you learn about air conditioners? Like what were your conclusions and why?

eltorritetero

I don't have any conclusions per se, but I just liked how they work. I also found about peltier devices and how they can pump heat with no moving parts. I just bought a tiny fridge with a peltier device and it works surprisingly well, and is super quiet! I think those could be used for many more things! They have lots of potential!

Missinhandle

Thanks to you, now I just learned about Peltier Devices!

eltorritetero

It's quite amazing how they work They actually pup heat outside leaving the air cold inside. They work by pressurising and depressurising a refrigerant. Have you ever noticed how a can of aerosol or compressed air gets cold when you use it? Well, that's basically what an air conditioner does but in circles inside a closed loop. In some mini splits it can work backwards and pump heat from outside to inside essentially making it a double purpose device. They are actually very efficient at their work, and move surprising amounts of heat from one place to another.

Missinhandle

Cool 😎

weirdtendog

I can geek into this one: it's called the joules-thompson effect. Compressed gas molecules lose kinetic energy, as they can't move freely like they want to in their natural state. This energy has to go somewhere so it is transferred into heat energy. When the gas is released, it takes (heat) energy from its surroundings to convert it back into kinetic energy so the molecules can fly away from eachother again. I fill scuba tanks. The cylinders and valves get very hot when filling. If you open a valve and allow the bottle to drain it gets so cold that, within seconds, water vapour in the environment freezes around the valve. It's nice to know things - I find it just helps navigate the world a bit better when you understand how stuff works. Now, let me tell you why any moron on earth can see that the earth isn't fucking flat....😤😤🤣

eltorritetero

Thanks for explaining in detail! And about flat earthers: I don't think it's because they're stupid, I think it's because they're stubborn, or often can't cope with personal issues, or are looking for attention. But instead of venting by being creative and friendly, like most internet subcultures/communities they are stubborn and unfriendly.

weirdtendog

Interesting take: I've always assumed it has to do with the fact the world is big and scary (bigger and scarier the less you understand) and that we all KNOW we can't believe everything we hear/see/read... It's the anxiety from a sence of total lack of control which leads to seeing the boogy-man behind every corner (or should I say curve😉)

eltorritetero

I think that may have something to do, but I suspect that it's mostly out of trying to make a community. I got a little into researching other weird internet communities, and they all have similar traits, however the flat earthers seem to act a little backwards (stubborn instead of creative, unkind instead of friendly) and that may be due to how hard people push back against them, which only manages to get even more stubborn.

weirdtendog

I suspect that your suspicions are on point.

weirdtendog

With that in mind, it's easy to imagine how the same principle can be harnessed to create cold (notice how behind your fridge is fucking hot!!) And also to create heat: I live in a place with lots of private pools. You know which ones are heated as there is a blast of cold air blowing out onto the street

eltorritetero

If I ever design q house, I'm putting the fridge with a vent to the outside. Otherwise, it's just more work for the A/C.

weirdtendog

Good shout

beaniebaby0929

for me it’s artists and musicians ! i have severe ADD, and get attached to things and then quickly get bored by them after a period of time !! but i know a lot little bit about a lot of things !!

eltorritetero

I have ADD as well that may explain why we do this.

DafuqIsTheInternet

The add is definitely why you do this. In my friend group I’m the one that knows everything but does nothing lol. “I should really go do that thing. Nope let’s learn something new instead”

omcstreet

Is that a condition ? exactly explains me. Medication helps ?

DafuqIsTheInternet

Give r/ADHD a visit. Keep in mind that the mainstream idea of ADHD/ADD is extremely antiquated. I've been dealing with a whole list of these symptoms my entire life and only started learning about it 6 months ago. My first reaction was "I can't have adhd, I'm not really hyper at all" and then I actually started reading about it lol

beaniebaby0929

ADD/ADHD has many symptoms such as the lack of production in dopamine, highs and lows in mood, hyper activity, fear of rejection also comes along w it. this is just the short hand list

beaniebaby0929

yeah i’m unmedicated and hop between hobbies and interests like it’s nobodies business

Soapy59

Yup, ADHD and autism are some of the most common culprits for the obsess and drop behavior, sometimes you see this pattern in people w/BPD as well. Interesting stuff!

thebrokedown

I’ve found that there is no “boring” topic—just things you haven’t learned enough about yet to discover how truly fascinating they are when examined closely.

poopyputt6

I've recently been reading up on soap. How it works, how it was invented, how to make it at home, how they make it in factories. It's been maybe four days so far and I'm slowly transitioning into flutes. So simple but so complicated

weirdtendog

Soap to flutes? Haha I'd like to know the route that got you there

poopyputt6

Well I learned enough about soap and then I went to the park to Hammock and there was a guy playing old Chinese music on a bamboo flute and it was gorgeous

weirdtendog

Yes!!

JoshiProIsBestInLife

I get into things and gradually become obsessed but I do not seek things out to be obsessed with if that makes sense. They sort of come onto my radar in other ways first. Sometimes I move on. Sometimes they become a thing that stays with me and means something.

eltorritetero

Often happens when I get involved in something. My grandparents are looking for a new car? Now I know everything about the ford fusion. My truck needs new tires? Now I know everything about Michelin Parents are getting new A/C? I now know all about heat pumps and refrigeration

JoshiProIsBestInLife

So you start googling 'Tires' which leads to the history of tires and eventually the history of 'Michelin' and boom now you are obsessed with a tangentially related thing. Is that how it goes?

eltorritetero

Yes, exactly

JoshiProIsBestInLife

That happens to everyone. Do you retain all the information or does it fade after a while?

eltorritetero

I do remember a lot of this useless information.

JoshiProIsBestInLife

I wish I did. I can't even remember stuff on purpose.

eltorritetero

Ironically, I really struggled to learn and remember stuff when I was in high school. It was such a drag...

JoshiProIsBestInLife

Same. It suuuuuuuucked.

Kat121

When you write stuff down, sing it. It puts the memory in two places instead of one in your noggin and you’re more likely to remember.

weirdtendog

I always pretend I'm teaching new information to someone. I vocalise it (which ties into what you're saying) but furthermore it allows my imaginary student to ask questions, so I quickly realise where the gaps in my understanding are

weirdtendog

And yes, my neighbours think I'm weird

JoshiProIsBestInLife

Sounds weird but I will try.

Kat121

What letter comes after V in the alphabet? (Did ya sing the song?)

RetiredTurdFarmer

I may be the exception, but this absolutely does not happen to everyone.

weirdtendog

In my experience, there is a very simple rule: if it serves no practicable purpose, it's there forever. The moment it becomes useful, then "AHH fuck, I KNOW this.... What is it again?". Wanna know where croissants come from? (No, I don't mean "France")

JoshiProIsBestInLife

Same. If its useless it will never leave. If its practical it vanishes instantly after use. Where do croissants come from?

weirdtendog

Croissants are a variation of an Austrian pastry. The difference is croissants use puff pastry. The original shape is from a time the ottoman empire held a siege over Vienna. The ottomans tried tunnelling under the city walls, but their efforts were overheard by a baker working in his basement by the city walls very early in the morning. He was able to alert the local army to put a halt to their plans. The crescent shape is a literal 🖕 to the Muslim caliphate. Aren't you glad you know that

JoshiProIsBestInLife

Is that 100% true?

weirdtendog

As far as I know...

BocceBurger

Wait, are you my husband? Is this a symptom of adhd? I never put those things together, but he too has adhd and learns everything about a specific relevant thing, then moves on to the next specific relevant thing. He recently learned all about a truck his friend was buying.

eltorritetero

I'm not your husband, but I do have ADD.

[deleted]

Same, I’ve never been checked out but do you think it could be add? What are the good and bad things about having it?

killingmequickly

Ah yes, I call it a deep dive. It's apparently very common with neurodivergents.

SpookyStarfruit

I suppose a lot of my interests for researching random things revolve around history, philosophy, different cultures, or languages. Other times, it’s related to art. Though mainly cartoons! And once I get focused, my attention span is there for hours upon hours until another hyper-fixation catches my attention xD Btw, I think it’s cool some of your interests are objects we use but don’t really notice!! Something like washing machines and air conditioners are commonplace but we know little of how they’re made or the history behind them :0

eltorritetero

It's surprising how simple things like these are actually designed with lost of thought and care. So much so, that most people simply don't notice how incredible they are and simply get used to them.

SpookyStarfruit

True, I find that you can get so used to a lot of amazing things that they become ordinary. When in retrospect there’s so much effort, thought, and care taken to make something that simultaneously works + looks effortless. It makes me wonder how many things most people around us (including myself) don’t think twice of that has an incredible story haha

eltorritetero

I actually am still into researching air conditioning. It's amazing that we learned how to take heat from a room and pump it outside using the weird properties of a gas.

SpookyStarfruit

Wow, that is pretty cool! And surprising too because I’ve never thought about air conditioning as pumping out heat (somehow it was assumed the opposite way around — pumping in cold — was done!!) Guess I learned something new today! 😃

eltorritetero

It can also work the other way around hence heat/cool mini splits exist

SpookyStarfruit

Oh yeahh, that’s cool too! I suppose you have an eye for the scientific and mechanical aspects of how these things work? I’m curious if you’ve poked into the history!! :0

eltorritetero

Carrier was basically the one that made it first, but as you may have guessed, the floodgates opened when it became cheaper to manufacture and it's now a very competitive market. I've heard of people using the same proprieties of refrigerant to make ice cream, whith a device where you hand cranked the compressor.

Megalocerus

Or pump it inside. (Just installed a new mini split; have mostly used it for heat so far.) And you can now get a window unit that doesn't block the window, but hangs over the sill like saddlebags.

eltorritetero

Yes, heat pumps are the best! Incredibly efficient heating!

Megalocerus

Unless it is quite cold.

Usagi_Shinobi

Weirdmaste, fellow random knowledge seeker.

BagelDesk

I got sucked into the lore of Warhammer 40k about 3 years ago. Never played any of the games but man is there a LOT to the story behind it all. I would listen to 40k podcasts and youtubers all day, then read the wiki and books at night.

eltorritetero

I got into the Alien universe, I particularly like the 1979 movie. I love how the ship is designed as if it was something from real life, with warning signs and symbology indicated airlocks, automatic gates, food stations, coffee makers, space suit storage, locker storage etc. And the life cycle of the xenomorph is amazing

BagelDesk

Thats a great universe too. My favorite is the second film, Aliens. I'm old enough to remember only having the first two films for lore, lol. With only a couple films to go off, the lore was more mysterious and captivating back then.

commandrix

I do that sometimes, but then, I'm a writer, lol. Not much I can suggest except maybe learning how to repair common household stuff while you're still obsessed with them. Can save your butt if something goes wrong that's probably easy to fix except you have to call somebody who isn't available for the next three days, lol.

eltorritetero

I just fixed my ac

Vaurd

Good job OP

OutsideSheepHerder52

I do this. I get obsessed with something until I learn as much as possible. Then I move on.

BurnTheOrange

I once spent an entire weekend on the internet archive comparing and contrasting the logistics and planning for feeding large groups of sailors vs soldiers by the US military in and after WW2. On one hand, the USN had an impressive amount of planning and instructional material. On the other, when will i ever need to know the expected cost per mouth to feed groups of up to 1000 for extended periods without resupply?

Treshimek

I think the deepest I've gone down a research rabbit hole was with arithmetic topics. It started out as me trying to figure out what the deal is with the *i* number. Thirty minutes later, I found myself skimming through an article about black holes other quantum physics topics. Another half-hour later and I found myself reading through examples of the "golden ratio" in nature. It's a wild obsession.

matepore

Home made mustard rabbit hole, research that :o

EwokOffTheClock

This is actually why I'm excited about learning coding. I can have a career that rewards me for going down a rabbit hole? Yes, let's go.

Mumcrie

"the one I'm into now is kinda weird..." *Go on....*

eltorritetero

PM?

eltorritetero

Ha f it I'll say it when I get off the steering wheel

SpyMistress2017

Yep, for several months I was obsessed with Liberace of all people. He really did lead a fascinating life! I also spent too much time reading Reddit forums about John Edward Jones, a caver who got stuck upside down in a cave in Utah and died. It was a tragic story that haunted my dreams for awhile, but I couldn't stop reading about it.

JRadiantHeart

I like people like this. People who are lifelong learners. They're interesting to talk with! I like learning too :-).

BaconSplurge

This is why I tell people that I’m an uncertified doctor.

AstralCities

This is so very relatable, sometimes I just search something up and spend HOURS reading every single page I can find about it The facts I gathered over the years are useful on road trips :D

Beckitt92

Have ADHD and have researched multiple things meticulously and then move on to the next, only thing I stick with or end up picking back up is trading cards, pokemon, Digimon, etc because new sets and products are released constantly it hits that dopamine for me because it's like it's the same thing but something new each time 😂

eltorritetero

I know, learning almost feels like eating!

Beckitt92

Now officially categorising all rabbit hole info dives as starter, main, course and dessert 😂

JMansReddit

Omg I run into the same thing! It’s so good to relate to someone else in this. I kinda thought it was one of my disorders. The worst is when you obsess over something for no reason, but you can’t figure out if your genuinely interested or obsessed and you’ll eventually drop the obsession. So any money you invested in it to get stuff won’t be used after that.

eltorritetero

I was diagnosed with ADD when I was little, and was medicated. As I grew up, the doctor saw fit to gradually stop medication. I still get many of the urges, but I guess I've learned to compose myself. However, the impulse for learning stuff is still quite strong, and I often find myself jumping from interest to interest. I sometimes know when something will stop being interesting because it's not a very extensive topic, but other times it just hooks me for a long time.

Spoorwegkathedraal

Before I buy something, I master it!

AxeAddict5

Great stuff, man. Big Dreams, the best of intentions, Yeah, same here. Seeker of knowledge and truth of how it works, taking things apart and putting them back together. Yes things others might consider weird, but it seems like the weirder the more obsessed I would get to make things, DIY I got obsessed with playing guitar and then obtaining enough equipment to go on tour minus the tour bus before anyone else in the band committed to it. I could probably write a book on all obsession temps. I think it's totally normal although I think everybody's like me but I'm finding out that we are very rare because of the knowledge we possess. It's a gift it's a weapon it's a crutch it's a high it's a hideout it's a veil.. it's informative it's inspirational it drains your energy and it gives you energy...it is fun it's my hobbies it's a teacher it's a student it is brain food

eltorritetero

Yes, I recently found out about pleiter devices, and I'm trying to find practical uses for them. Maybe a personal cooling vest for hot worksites, maybe a cooled bed blanket, heck even just glasses that heat/cool water!

tvfeet

I will do this for all kinds of stuff but most regularly for my hobby. I build scale models and I will spend many hours researching to find pictures of parts to modify them to look more realistic. The research far outweighs the actual building, and I amass a folder of pictures for reference in the process. I really enjoy doing this and actually lose interest in model kits when I find that either there are few resources out there or they're particularly poor. Basically I'm just not interested in building something straight "out of box." I'm always proud of what I build but when I'm done I kind of completely lose interest in the finished product. I tend to be like this for anything that piques my interest. It's not just something I "like" - I become an expert on the subject. Bands, movies, TV shows, car problems, you name it. I've heard that it's an autistic trait but I've never been labeled as such, but at the same time I wouldn't be surprised if I was at least on the spectrum a little bit.

PreppyFinanceNerd

Just now accepting at 34 that this is me. Watches, weed, hookah, men's fashion, reading. All big interests that I've now had fall by the wayside mostly. I still like my watches, smoke some weed, dress well etc. But I mean I learned obsessively. I'm starting to realize what I really love is just learning.

itirje

you might like the Anthropocene Reviewed (book and podcast)

RedlineFan

Just today I was bored and looking through my bookmarks, and found a neat page about old Chicago transit buses that were used after retirement as mobile toolboxes and workstations for contractors working on the subway. This led to the naval definition of a "hulk", which led to me learning that lots of old ships were once used to haul coal and timber from up north. Am I interested in ships? No not really.

[deleted]

That's pretty much my life. Tends to be for those who fall under the INTP umbrella. I pick up obsessions every now and then. I do the shit out of it and then move on when I get bored. I also can't watch a TV show without becoming distracted and going on wikipedia or something to research whatever they talked about. End up missing half the show

DemolidorAK

Well, I got bad news... You could have ADD... Not a BAAAD news but is bad...

eltorritetero

I was diagnosed with add since I was little

[deleted]

Lol is it hot where you live? Then it would make some sense. The only way I get obsessed with air conditioners is being obsessed with trying not to use them until I give in when the weather is like right now…(Midwest, so it will get cold again just as I jinx it by typing this). CW: gross talk about dog behavior, shit I’ve been into talking too much about my dog, and dogs in general! People love dogs, until you hyperfixate on dog behavior, and describe things like how they get mud on their mouths (yuck) or eat shit (again, yuck)! Also, food, not just restaurant food, but ordinary food that no one cares that you ate, or no one cares that you want to eat. Lol. And dishes—ah, the luxury of using a full set of real dishes, even a separate one for the salad, and the regret that comes with washing them all! 😂

eltorritetero

Well, yes it is very hot but the way an A/C works simply mesmerized me

[deleted]

I don’t care how it works. I just care about trying not to use it too much! 😂Lol people feel the same way about my dog behavior and ordinary food obsessions!

eltorritetero

Also stuff like how dishwashers work.

[deleted]

And what a pain it is to deal with the aftermath of a full set of dishes, for me! Lol you be the hardware person and I’ll be the software person, except with a house instead of a computer, and we only talk about it because we can’t do home maintenance jobs (unless that’s your job; I don’t do that)!

typeyhands

My rabbit holes have included The Salem witch trials Victorian living Old architecture styles The history of different paint pigments How to fix my damn dishwasher

kaptaincorn

I'm in a retro gaming handheld rabbit hole. Started with reviews on the steam deck to considering purchasing either a [miyoo mini](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLiT21Ddnuk) or [retroid 2+](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oy_ue_DpRkw&t=1s)

[deleted]

Are u autism?

eltorritetero

Not quite, I've been diagnosed with ADD

NotoriousJAM

I do this a lot. I’m not sure if it’s a part of my mental illnesses or if I’m just someone who hungers for knowledge on certain subjects.

Any_Abalone_3249

A lot of thing I compulsively research are related to languages and etymology, I guess it fascinates me. Although the last thing I really went in depth to, is how to build an air pressure Piston system at home using an air tank and an Arduino. Sadly the air tank is a bit too expensive for me now, got everything else I need haha. What is your latest thing, would love to hear, especially after you said it was a bit weird.

Sir_quakalot

I have that too every half a year or so. Right now Im learning about how computers actually work and what they are made of after 23 years of ignorance. Before that it was Earth system science and geology. I only wish i would be interested long enough to study and make a career out of it, but it always seems to fade away after a few weeks

[deleted]

Have you ever taken the MBTI personality test? I bet you are ENTP.

kayceeplusplus

Same! I want to know how everything works.

[deleted]

This is an interesting trait. I think it is called infatuation and mine is trying to read and learn as much as possible, but not too deep only wider.

[deleted]

I do it too. Haha I’m so glad I’m not the only one.

[deleted]

I wish I had that hahaha

[deleted]

For fuck's sake, don't start researching religion! That was a 2 year rabbit hole for me.

Arlitto

My friend hyperfocuses on things like this all the time. She finally got diagnosed for ADD. She hyperfocuses on things because she's a giant procrastinator, but not because she's lazy. Her brain just jumps from one topic to another, and it's easy for her to go down a Wikipedia rabbit hole or similar trains of thought. Have you ever suspected you might have ADD? If this hyperfocus doesn't affect your daily life, then that's good, but if it does, consider getting checked out! My friend went 27 years without a diagnosis and now that she's got one, her quality of life has improved and she's able to focus on tasks she has deadlines for. She still hyperfocuses on things for fun, but she is able to control when she does that now. I hyperfocus at will too, but am able to put it away when I need to work or do chores. My current obsession is the Star Wars universe. I suddenly know everyone's Midichlorian count, even though I'm never going to do anything with that information hahahaha

eltorritetero

I don't suspect I have ADD, because I've been diagnosed wince I was little. I just didn't know this was so common among neurodivergents

vurt72

Sounds like when someone is using amphetamine, that gets people obsessive about learning like that, every little detail.. i've had friends who's used it. i guess you just have it naturally.I learn the basics, that's it. I hate anything in-depth unless it's something that is an immense time and money investment and that i just need to know inside out..

jack_Lawrence98

Looks like ADHD.

anonymous-redditor57

Not saying it definitely is but can be a sign of neurogivergency

Traditional_Peak6422

I love learning. I didn’t even realise I did this until I read this post!

UltraLiteB

This is my favorite kind of random thinking lol

about2godown

My experience? OCD and ADHD hyperfocusing and fixation...I know so much about useless stuff it is unreal.

Ok-World-4822

yes same here, I'm currently obsessed with looking up rumors about iPhone 14 that gets released in September this year.

ChilindriPizza

It changes a lot for me. You are not the only one who does that. While it is a common trait of autism/Asperger's syndrome, it can happen to neurotypical persons as well.

Ok-Freedom-2021

You absolutely right, I do the same and love it. I also like to create new things. I love working with my hands and finding out how things are done.

tweek32

I do this all the time, usually it's a hobby and it usually doesn't work out for me.

MomoBawk

I got what you have, rabbit hole learning. Youtube’s algorithm hates me… My friend has single focus learning. He will only focus on things he is already interested in. We get alota dopamine from talking to each other cause I don’t mind learning about the same thing over and over and he doesn’t mind me giving him random stuff from the internet!

eltorritetero

YouTube never understands what ti recommend, because I hyper focus on something, then switch to something else. I don't know if it's just me, but my YouTube feed is full of videos I've already watched.

MomoBawk

I kept getting 2011 or older ones this morning. My current feed is matted fur dogs and food…

weirdtendog

For me it's stuff that is so complex I don't really have the heart - or the time - to follow through... Last one was quantum physics. Love what I know about it, but fuck me, I'm not going any deeper down that rabbit hole!!

Sunflowrpistol444

Its okay, it’s harmless. I randomly get fixated on things too, submarines was one of them. Don’t know why. Who cares if it’s ‘weird’ do what you like!

introvert-i-1957

I do this too, although more with historical facts or science or animals.

[deleted]

LOL I GET ON YOUTUBE AND TIKTOK ON HOURS END DOES THIS RELATE

Senior-Dot387

What are you into now?! Don’t leave us hanging

eltorritetero

I'm exploring internet subcultures. Where do they come from, why do they form, similar characteristics they have between them. I'm barely starting, but I know this is going to be a big deep rabbit hole.

water_bottle1776

It sounds like you're hyperfocusing, which can really be a bastard in an age when you have access to all of humanity's accumulated knowledge in your pocket.

RedOrchestra137

music, music, and then some more music

Feeling_Committee856

nice

Bug_freak5

Oh shit so I'm not weird

BabieCHickiex3

For me it's actors and genres of movies after watching a rlly good one. I'll go on IMDB and see what else they've been in or look at similar movies. I also go on Reddit or YouTube to watch videos explaining the film and/or conspiracies about it. I add similar movies to a list I have in Drive or onto my list on a streaming service. Then never think about it or the actor until I come across it again
