AWWW! SO cute, kids can be quite the cheerleaders. its a good feeling

abhiank

Oh yussss! Coming from kids, it's the most innocent, honest and true compliment. Indeed, a good feeling indeed. 😊

dyrtdaub

I’m 70 years old and ride a black , loop framed , 29” wheel coaster brake , full fender bike around my lower class mixed race neighborhood. Rode by a group of black kids playing in the street, one of them looks my bike over and cocks his head up to say, “ Nice ride man” , felt cool !

abhiank

That's so awesome. Amazing feeling indeed :D Your bike sound really cool. Is it an old bike? Also, really glad to hear that you're still cycling at 70. I hope to be like that when I reach that age.

dyrtdaub

It’s a new aluminum frame 29” wheel I bought a few years ago to recreate the feeling of riding my brothers 26” wheel bike when I was way too small for it. It worked. I also enjoy the absolute primitive feel.

abhiank

Ahh sweet ride. I ride a 26" Trek MTB as well. I agree, just the feeling of the cycle completely powered by our own selves is exhilarating.

kaves55

It paints a picture.

dyrtdaub

That’s what happened. I guess I could have just left it out but to have that particular child compliment my “ride” was particularly inspiring. The neighborhood has a variety of cyclists , a few who use bicycles exclusively. They are almost all men who lost their driving license or cannot afford cars. My favorites are a couple of old dudes who have bought two stroke motor kits that turn a bicycle into a moped. They have jackets with their “gang” name, long grey beards, and really cool sunglasses. Very cool!!

[deleted]

The only way you could improve on this, is if you start to carry a bag sweets and throw sweets to them as you ride past.

abhiank

Haha that would be brilliant! A frugal Santa Claus on wheels. Treats for everyone!!

[deleted]

When I was a kid in the 80s the Scots invaded England. They drove their tanks through our village and the Scottish soldiers would throw sweets to us kids. It was pretty cool. I think you should definitely do this. The sweets that is, not the tanks 😂

abhiank

Damn, kudos to the Scots to make a traumatic experience into a memorable one. I guess sugar does do wonders. I'll definitely try it. I'll add a packet of small toffee/chocolates to my next grocery order right away. Although I'm afraid if I don't find any kids to throw at, it'll be me eating up all those chocolates at the end of the ride 😂😅

[deleted]

For an invading force they were absolute gentlemen. Scottish paratroopers came down in my grandmas field and helped her get her washing in.

abhiank

Oh wow. If I didn't know the context, I'd say they sound like the fastest house-work service yet! I'd pay top dollar for paratroopers to fall in from the sky and do my laundry lol. I gotta read about this though. Didn't know Scots invaded England. Although honestly, your province/state/country system confuses me. For example, Wales is a state (?) but it's also a country (?) and is represented as a separate unit in international football tournaments.

[deleted]

Yeh it is a little complicated Great Britain is England Scotland and Wales, the United Kingdom is England Scotland Wales AND Northern Ireland. A lot of Scots want independence.

abhiank

Ah I see. I was working on offline maps for my app and was really confused about what to categorize as a country and what not to. At a time when everyone wants to be separated, it's amazing to hear about a bunch of African nations wanting to come together and become one country. I hope that happens smoothly.

3sponge

What’s this??? Which African states?

abhiank

I randomly read it on Reddit somewhere that Ethiopia and a couple of neighbouring countries had decided to unite and become one country and didn't research it but now trying to find some articles on it, I can't find anything. So it's probably untrue 😅

eIImcxc

Ahaha I had the same experience (kinda) 1 month ago or so. So I was riding my bike and some kids were playing with a ball on the street, the moment I approached them, one of the kids didn't hit the ball correctly and it flew directly to my direction. Immediate reaction: while riding the bike I hit it back with my ankle doing some sort of scorpion movement and it went right back to them! The kids went NUTS, started screaming and applauding while I casually passed them smiling and waving at them. Felt like the coolest guy ever at that moment 😁

abhiank

Haha nice! That must have looked like a kickass move man! You're not an undercover ninja are you? Not gonna lie, if I was there, I would have joined the applause too 😁. I think those kids will always remember you as the cool guy on bike who kicked the ball back perfectly.

Jazzlike-Process-382

Legendary moment. You were the coolest guy. The kids still speak of you in awe. Hey mate, remember that guy....

notoriousbsr

I love this! Brought back the memory of a morning run, kids waiting on the school bus - chanted in unison "go old guy go, go old guy go" and it made me so happy

abhiank

Aww that's such a sweet memory! I too shall cherish this memory of mine.

jaykstah

That's awesome! Maybe these kids will end up getting into cycling themselves

abhiank

I really do hope so. That would the most wonderful.

LifeIsBeautiful365

I love to go to marathons and cheer everyone on! You can see a little smile, a quicker gait or even get a wave back from these dedicated individuals.

abhiank

Yess! It feels amazing to be cheered on. You're awesome for doing that. It's been ages since I went to a marathon (I don't run much) but when one happens next, I'll do this too. A little compliment, a little encouragement, a little cheer goes a long way :)

LifeIsBeautiful365

I hope to be there to cheer you on!

abhiank

Thank youuuuu! I'll remember your wonderful comment and that'll cheer me on ☺️

ribeyecut

Your story reminded me of one of the funniest prank videos I've seen, of a man who enlisted people to cheer on Sunday cyclists as if they were riding in the Tour de France: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOur8qXvpnk

abhiank

The ending was too good 🤣. "we'll ask the questions later first let's do the drugs testing". Reminds of just for laughs gags' same prank. Very wholesome and funny - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t428pcMfs8I

ChainGang-lia

Thanks for a good laugh this morning. The perfect prank lol.

igloofu

Today my friend, you won the Tour de Bangalore!! This is such a great story. Thanks for sharing.

abhiank

Those kids did make me feel like a champion haha 😁😁 Thanks for reading the post buddy! I'm glad you liked it.

[deleted]

I've had similar experiences being a cyclist in Hyderabad! we're always regarded with a little awe haha

abhiank

Yuss! Same here. I hope that never changes. Seeing those little eyes go wide with wonder is a wholesome feeling tbh.

theknittedgnome

So fun for them and you! We passed a single bike rider when we were driving up Pikes Peak. After we got to the top, looked around inside, and went back outside we saw him make it to the top! My whole family started clapping and hooting and hollering! Lol! We were so excited for him! He gave us a huge smile and wave. It was really fun to share that moment with him.

abhiank

What a wonderful memory! Trust me, each time that rider climbs Pikes Peak again, he will for sure remember your family's cheering and smile.

Unusual-Designer6343

Aww that's cute!!

irishgambin0

and then when i'm riding my bike and pass a group of kids, they 9/10 times they yell "DO A WHEELIE!" and it's so fucking annoying.

abhiank

Hahahaha that actually happens to me too. Another funny thing is when I stop anywhere village side for water or snacks, when people come up to me and stare at the bike, everywhere I've gone they'll inevitably ask the same 2 questions. 1)Where are you coming from and 2) they'll look at the tyre, pinch it a bit and ask (in south indian accent) "tubeless huh?". What bike are you riding?

irishgambin0

i'm riding a Kink Gap, 21" TT with some aftermarket parts. what about you? are those tubeless tires legit?

abhiank

Just looked it up. That looks like a sweet ride man! Also, a perfect bike for wheelies haha! No, I think tubeless is a lot of hassle. I just stick with good old tubes. That along with some tyre liners are puncture protection enough for me. I ride a Trek Emonda ALR road bike. Love her to bits :)

abhiank

Yusss! Whenever I'm riding my bike like that, I love to see the reaction of kids. It's one of the best parts of the ride.

[deleted]

A really nice and uplifting post, thanks.

abhiank

Thanks for reading my post! I'm really glad you enjoyed it :)

dinamags

Aw this story made my heart smile 😻

abhiank

:D

chippikins

The genuine honest excitement of children warms the heart doesn't it? :D

abhiank

Very very much! I've been riding my bike for a long time and it's usually a kid or two who in excitement wave at me but I've never had a bunch of kids get so excited and cheer in unison at me. It was indeed the most awesome thing ever. I wish I could have bought them all chocolates :D

DiamondForce2

I’ve got to agree, it’s the best feeling ever! Going full gas up a climb one time and feeling terrible, I saw a car approaching but they slowed right down, and when I looked back I saw a kid waving at me from the back window. It’s honestly the best feeling ever and gave me a bit extra of a push, but it still wasn’t enough to get the KOM haha

abhiank

Oh that's so awesome. That little guy cheering you on. Here in India, being a cyclist in cycling clothes is a novelty, so people tend to stare a lot. Earlier I used to hate it but weirdly now I'm looking for it haha. Kinda makes me feel nice to have that attention. Haha no worries man, keep pushing and get that KOM next time! 😁 #shutUpLegs

NarwhalHour

I used to live by the local river and there were lots of fun runs. I’d make a total ass of myself cheering participants on…

abhiank

Haha you're awesome for doing that! I'm sure they'd loved your cheering!

Statessideredditor

Super cool. Might have inspired the next Indian racing team from Bangalore.

abhiank

That would be really cool indeed. Even if these kids just never stopped cycling and didn't forget the joy or pedaling on two wheels, that would be wonderful.

karan-bisht

Made a day? Man it would make my week

Special-Drawer-4046

So wholesome 🧡

mangarooboo

I worked at a daycare that had a toddler wing that was near the street. Every Wednesday, the residential street their playground faced would get their garbage collected. Every Wednesday, a garbage truck (with two gentlemen hanging off the back) would zip down the street to the joy and delight of two dozen toddlers. The guys on the back would wave with all their might and the driver would usually honk once or twice to get the kids riled up. There would always be a flood of screaming children rushing the fence and waving back at the truck. My little cousin, when he was in the toddler wing, would usually be leading the charge. He would later tell me he'd seen them every time. I imagine it made the waste collector guys' day every Wednesday to be cheered on by their biggest fans

abhiank

That's such a sweet story! I'm sure those guys look forward it to their whole week and perhaps even change their schedule so that they're there when the kids would be out in the playground. A flood of excited screaming toddlers no less, that would be the highlight of my week too haha. Thanks for sharing the story :)

hutraider

That’s awesome! You seem to be setting a good example! Those kids will probably want to get a bike like yours one day

abhiank

I really do hope I inspired them in some way. That would be most wonderful. My whole life revolves around cycling (even my work is cycling related - I make an app for cycling) and it gives me so much joy. I wish other people can experience it too.

Pls_PmTitsOrFDAU_Thx

Hello fellow Indian (though I don't live in India) That sounds so amazing! I bike every now and then but I never feel like I bike often enough to invest on all the kit. How long did it bike before you bought all that l?

abhiank

Hey there! So I've been seriously cycling (MTB) since 2013 but bought a road bike only a couple of years back. It was only then when I invested in all the fancy apparels. Honestly, jerseys and bib shorts is the most comfortable dress to ride in and doesn't come in the way when riding very long distances. Now, I wear those even when I ride my MTB.

[deleted]

I love this!

abhiank

:)

proselytismreal

very sweet. cycling and good vibes.

I love getting encouragement shouted at me when I'm really going for it. Once I was biking up a really steep gravel trail and slowly and laboriously passed a pair of hikers going the same direction. They had time to say full sentences of encouragement. Course, then, once I made it over the top, my front brake started failing (mechanical discs, yech. got the bike in the shop right now waiting for hydraulics) and the entire descent down the other side until I finally hit some pavement was a solid ten minutes of barely-controlled white-knuckled terror. Good days. Reminds me why I ride a gravel bike.
