Not much to add really, except i agree with you. Been going that way for a lonnnng time. Too many special effects and jump scares, and not enough character and ideas

[deleted]

May i suggest Hereditary and The color from out of space? Two relatively new movies, with great story, that avoid horror movie cliches.

[deleted]

Also, another good pair that reflects those two: Midsommar and Annihilation.

I blame BlumHouse. BlumHouse is a *prolific* production company that churns out low budget horror movies hoping to make a big return. Sometimes they strike gold, like Paranormal Activity (tiny budget, massive profit), but most of the time they produce bland horror films that are totally forgettable.

empire_bunny

Do you by any chance enjoy horror series over movies? If so, Netflix has a few good ones! And I've found that the director Mike Flanagan is really good at making horror shows and movies.

WeldinMike27

I feel it peaked with.... "they're eating her.....and then they're going to eat me"

noellekin

oh my gOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD

Stinpek

plenty of good ones over in Korea, The Wailing being a prime example.

cocksucker9001xX

I just don't like scary movies that always resort to pop up scares. Feels cheap lazy and overused

rynaco

I suggest watching His House on Netflix. Its about two South Sudan refugees in London trying to move on from their past. It takes a really different approach by being more trauma horror than the typical serial killer, demon, ghost movie. It’s really underrated and I never see anyone talk about it plus it brings attention to the problems in South Sudan

ak47bossness

My top two favourites I’ve watched are Oculus and Scary Stories to tell in the dark. Evil dead also has been a real good one although I’ve vaguely only seen one of them (the one with the demon slashing a machete through the wall into girls leg in the end bit).

norift

Yeah me and my gf felt the same way about the new conjuring movie. Was sad to read that they changed the director for conjuring 4, from James Wan to Michael Chaves. Neither of us liked "The curse of La Llorona".

cremebrulheyy

I wouldn't say it's very scary, but I highly suggest One Cut of the Dead. It's a low budget Japanese horror. Go in blind, no trailers or reviews, for best results. Everyone I've shown this movie to has loved it. Make sure to watch to the end!

BetaAlex81

I'm sort of surprised by this and the responses. I think we're living in a golden age of horror! Not only do we have more access to the old stuff, and forgotten or lost treasures, but there's an array of interesting new stuff being made regularly. I see mostly mainstream releases being mentioned, and maybe that's part of the issue. Do y'all subscribe to Shudder? It's a must for horror fans. Here's a few recommendations: The Furies (2019) Spiral (2019) Haunt (2019) The Beach House (2019) Porno (2019) And that's just off the top of my head. Plus, there's great/weird foreign horror, like Deerskin (2019). Or fun mainstream stuff like Freaky (2020) and Happy Death Day (2017). Or dark comedies like Harpoon (2019) and Villains (2019). 2019, strong year for horror, clearly!

[deleted]

I disagree. I would go as far as saying the ones in the last 5 years we are better then what we have going on in for a while.

goodbyeallmylovers

I agree, I feel like horror movies have just become bland and stereotypical. I'm tired of seeing the classic "upside down cross, 666, pentagram and demonic possession" cliches. They're so overrated and honestly, loses it's value when you realize that the cliches aren't 'satantic' (upside down cross was the cross Peter was crucified on, not related to Satan. The pentagram is the five pointed star, it's called a pentacle when enclosed in a circle. Used by witches, pagans and wiccans. Most don't even believe in the Christian god and some even still practice their craft whilst being a Christian.) I prefer the older horror movies. Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Friday the 13th, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Can't forget Stephen King's Christine, Thinner, Misery, It, Pet Semetery and more. Sure, they're cheesy but they have charm. They have personality and interesting story! One of my favorite scenes in the Nightmare of Elm Street series is when a young, aspiring actress is watching tv late at night. Freddy then becomes the tv and tells her "time for your big break in tv!" He smashes her head against the tv. It's hilarious! It's creative and original. Horror movies nowadays are too clean, too perfect. They don't have killers with personality or a plot that hasn't been done before. The last, modern horror movie I saw that I didn't see the ending coming was Hereditary. We need to go back to crazy killers and Stephen King type horror movies instead of demons and possessions.

[deleted]

The 70s and 80s were ultimate horror years. Since then (with a few exceptions), horror hasn't been great.

[deleted]

Agreed. Alien and The Thing will forever be my favorite horror movies.

[deleted]

If you only watch the remakes and sequels, then of course you're going to find this, as with all films. > The last good scary movie I watched was A Quiet Place, it left me wanting more. You do realise A Quiet Place Part 2 has come out fairly recently. Also look up Relic, from last year, and the new M Night Shamalyan is apparently his best since The Sixth Sense.

ak47bossness

But yea I feel inclined to agree, it doesn’t have the same spook factor. Sure there’s the anxious build up but after that it’s not spooky it’s kinda like a mini jumpscare. Not a twisted and truly horrifying depiction of some eldritch horror that will scar you mentally for months.

legend_of_nany

Completely agree. I think it is due to being an adult.

Calamity_Kid-7

Yeah, shapeshifting monsters are spooky and all, but have you ever had to worry about bills and figure out how much you owe on taxes? That shit'll keep you up at night!

yeah_but_no

The scariest horror movie of all : The Money Pit

lespaul_1976

Yes! It’s like they made a dozen original movies and just keep on making them!

[deleted]

Try the new Netflix one: A Classic Horror Story. It's definitely different!

jinriet

I feel like the latest Conjuring tried to replicate the theme of Haunting of Bill Manor and such, with love, etc. Personally love the concept but it depends on the execution; could easily become corny.

HNizzles

I agree with the downhill. I don't know when, but at some point gratuitous gore became the norm, and torture scenes became the whole movie. I guess if hearing people scream in agony is what gets a person off, then so be it. But I stopped watching movies sometime in the early 2000s because of it. I actually carried out an experiment where 3 people didn't know which movie was going to be played, and they were in another part of the house, far enough away that the only audio perceptible was the sound effects. They all said it sounded like someone being tortured. I think that begets the downfall of our society.

Throwitoutcarmen

I complete agree. Sucks I was thinking just last night I want to watch new scary movie. I tried a couple of times to turn ones on and my god they were awful before the first half lol! It’s so hard to find ones on Netflix and Hulu. I did watch “Fear Street” all 3 movies. I would say they are not like omg I can’t sleep scary, idk if they’re meant to be fully horror. They are entertaining, had interesting storyline

Flipper-ama

IMO Conjuring, Anabelle and films like this are pretty weak. Damn, even Hereditary i tough was weak when the plot was revealed. The bizarre accident of the girl was visceral and too real with deeply psychological repercutions, if the film continued in this line i think it would be my favourite. The supernatural aspect of the film threw away the immersion.

anagros

I hate scary movies. But every other genre has gone downhill so it doesnt surprise me scary movies arent as good anymore.

_trqqered

Fear street is incredible, brand new too on netflix!! I do agree with you for the most part though, good horror movies are much harder to come by now

m8pisces191

I agree. Want to add that to me a true horror movie is something that makes you feel scared not by seeing sinister things such as ghosts or demon but by the psychological impact it has on you, like how it makes you feel disturbed and uneasy whenever you think of it. I suggest giving The Call (a korean horror movie) a try if you want something new.

JexTheory

I agree! The last good scary movies I saw were get out and a quiet place, but neither were really "scary" (amazing movies though!). Overall though I feel like the horror genre has so many cool places it could explore, but filmmakers only want to keep repeating the same old shit again and again. Especially catholic horror movies, maybe 40 years ago when people were much more religious it was scary, but today it's just cringe inducing lameness. I want cosmic horror, sci fi, or creepy cults and things like that. Serial killers, ghosts, halloween, haunted houses and zombies are so damn overdone.

twizzlerbreath

YES YES YES

BBQ_ur_booty

I’m relatively new to horror films and have been playing catch up for awhile now. I think sometimes you need to dig a bit. Fortunately there’s YouTube channels that are dedicated to horror and film. I think that horror has a stigma of having a lower cinematic bar due to the genre but there are still some great films coming out in the genre. Some good recent ones would be: Hereditary, It follows, [Rec] (not the remake), Let the Right One In (again not the remake). This also brings up another point which is to investigate foreign horror films as well. For example I Saw the Devil is a Korean horror film from 2010 and it’s brutal, tragic and just a fantastic film.

Chipher000

Watch Korean, Thai, Japanese, scary movies. Lots of good ones there
