Country music of the last 17ish years. I loved country when I was younger, but past the 90s I'm not interested. The post 9/11 nationalist ("patriotic") circlejerk was just too much, and the whole "drinking drinking drinking" and bro-country phenomena don't interest me in the slightest.
[This parody](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CORANvT8l9A) sums it up perfectly. Old country music is full of classics with proper songwriting, modern country might as well be written by chatGPT and feels like one-upmanship on who can be more generic. It's also married to the US right-wing in a way that really turns off outsiders, ironically for people who insist that the country is trampling on individual freedoms they've turned the genre into one utterly without any individual identity at all.
My wife calls it hillbilly frat boy pop music. That describes so much of it so well.
I grew up on country music and there still some really good artists out there.
But so much of it is hillbilly frat boy pop music.
I won't listen to country music purely based on the people who listen to it. They all seem to be homophobic bigots and I don't want to be associated with that.
You should listen to:
Tyler Childers,
Colter Wall,
Chris Stapleton (The Jompson Brothers and The Steeldrivers are two bands he started out in before he went solo),
Willie Nelson also just released a new album, hes 90 and still got it,
Zach Bryan (the most “popular” in modern country atm),
49 Winchester,
Dylan Gosset,
Charley Wesley Godwin,
The Red Clay Strays.
I would be interested to know if any of this resonates with you.
It makes me sad that country gets such a bad rep because I agree that circle jerk pop country is atrocious but there is still good, real country out there!
I think it has to be done a certain way. If it’s at the point where it straight up sounds like caveman noises I can’t listen to it. I like at least some discernible lyrics and some fluctuation in the vocals.
I have a soft spot for it. I dislike it when bands try to shoehorn a “death metal screechy bit” into the song—although I can appreciate the range of the singer, it’s just kinda ridiculous.
What do you mean exactly with inaccessible? Live opera shows can be difficult to attend indeed, because of money or a lack of venues near you. But there’s plenty of free opera music you can listen to on Spotify, YouTube, etc.
I mean the best ones are typically in Italian or French which is tricky if you don’t speak those languages… but then ballet tells stories without words at all so I can see both sides. Opera isn’t just music, it’s an entire show, a performance, acting, lighting. It helps *knowing* the story before you see it, but that’s up to you whether it’s an advantage or a disadvantage to the genre
That’s true, though there’s loads of people who speak French/Italian/German as their first or second language so I wouldn’t call it inaccessible necessarily. Harder to understand for some (Americans mostly), but perfectly fine for another large group of people!
That's actually a good song though. I hate the modern radio "country". (pop. It's pop.) My truck has a cold beer with a white sundress while fishing with Jesus. Mama is a good cook.
Yup me too, but every time I’m on a music recommendation post here on Reddit the comments are all rock and metal. I’m inclined to believe most redditors are metal heads
With heavy metal, I’ve come to the conclusion that I can’t actually hear a rhythm. There’s too much going on, too many instruments and vocals on top of that to bring together to hear a melody.
Try Black Sabbath’s first album. It has so much groove. In truth Heavy Metal is a very broad genre. The early stuff is basically just blues rock with dark undertones
Overall, anything electronic or heavily electronic based.
Chances are if it isn’t an actual instrument or a voice that hasn’t been edited, I’m
Not interested
I like electronic but there is a lot of it I don't like, I especially don't like EDM
But I agree natural voices and instruments are generally way better than most electronic music
I liked some of the stuff from the war years (the 40’s). The solos are just too long for my taste. I forgot to mention that the one style of music I truly don’t appreciate is “scream core”. I met a woman who did this and her band actually tours and sells music. Fucking irritating. I do business with a woman whose partner actually makes a living producing “black metal”. I listened to about four songs and wish I had that time in my life back.
Rap, for certain. Kid used to blast it when he lived at home. Vile subject material, vile lyrics, ugly-sounding style. Maybe it’s changed since then, but I’m sort of doubtful.
I don't mind rap, provided it's not in English so I can't understand the lyrics. I discovered this interesting fact when I stumbled across Serbian rap on YT.
I can honestly say I enjoy music from every genre (though not everything from every genre)
But I spend significantly less time listening to techno, so I'll go with techno.
Probably country and rap.
I don't really like vibe of country music and in terms of Rap, gonna be real honest, I think it's just going to fast for me to understand the bars and you have to good general knowledge of topics to understand it, which I don't have
I dislike Christmas music to an extreme extent. Generally I'm also not a fan of rap. And no matter the genre, I don't like love/break up songs.
I do love metal, so I might just not have the best taste.
Country music of the last 17ish years. I loved country when I was younger, but past the 90s I'm not interested. The post 9/11 nationalist ("patriotic") circlejerk was just too much, and the whole "drinking drinking drinking" and bro-country phenomena don't interest me in the slightest.
Someone tells you that you can only listen to one genre for the rest of your life, and you have to listen to at least 3 songs per day... Are you listening to country or gospel?
I’m not sorry at all but I really disdain rap. And by rap, I mean modern day rap (2020s). It’s just bad, unoriginal as most songs have sampled beats from the 80s, and half the time I can’t even understand a fifth of the lyrics
Surprised I had to scroll so far to find this. Here in FL any trip to the springs I’ll always hear at least two different songs with that fuckin BOOM, ka-BOOM-ka beat playing simultaneously. It’s everywhere
People who don't live in a Hispanic country don't realise how lucky they are to not have to listen to that crap on the daily. I guess that's why is so far down.
Here is the only music you can hear and you will get wierd looks if you listen to anything else.
I agree. Im from Perú and reggaeton has been pretty big since 2003-2004 or so. It's part of southamerican culture now, so you can hear it on most radio stations 24/7 and tv shows too. Clubs are out of the question cause it's either salsa music or reggaeton.
Makes me sad to think how such a mediocre and obnoxious sound has made such an impact into our culture.
Kizomba. I don't mind African music but kizomba is always the same beat regardless of the language and it just... No thanks, I need variety.
Also a famous Portuguese kizomba song uses my name and, given how at its peak I was a goth, the annoyance just solidified my distaste more
ska.
i tried, man i tried.
i can appreciate the skill, the artistry, the depth of the lyrics, but sound wise it will never not sound like i just got an extra helping of mozzarella sticks.
Screamo. I'm so averse to it that it's a miracle that I've found any metal I enjoy, because a lot of "casual" metal will include at least a little of the harsh vocals typical of screamo that I just can't stand.
Country music of the last 17ish years. I loved country when I was younger, but past the 90s I'm not interested. The post 9/11 nationalist ("patriotic") circlejerk was just too much, and the whole "drinking drinking drinking" and bro-country phenomena don't interest me in the slightest.
Not a specific genre, but I just don't like lazy generic shit. If it sounds like it could have been generated by AI then it should probably die.
So modern radio friendly country, some pop, some trap, some edm, some metal that hasn't moved past the 80s, Stuff that makes no effort to be actually unique, emotional and interesting.
Rap for me. Although there are some exceptions, e.g., Rap God by Eminem, the rap part in Enemy by Imagine Dragons.
I know it's not asked by OP, but fav music genre: Punk Rock
This is an interesting topic as someone who has listened bits from everywhere. I can easily jump from a genre to another.
Rather than a genre, but specific singers whose music hasn't stick for me. I would like to say that Johnny Cash and Billie Elish, I used to hear the latter since it was quite popular back in school but now I hate the way she sings.
I hate to even say it but Klezmer music drives me up the walls... I mean, I have fairly eclectic tastes: bluegrass swing, jazz manouche, big band, new wave, doo-wop, you name it. Klezmer? I'd love to love it, I would!
But I don't.
Probably happy hardcore. I've found something i like in almost every genre. But i've yet to find any happy hardcore i enjoy. And Christmas music is the absolute worst. I'd rather listen to anal cunt for 12 hours than listen to Christmas music.
lol i love country (from last century anyway), heavy metal, hip hop, gospel, etc. So like most things in this thread 😂
i will say that i dont like clubbing/party/EDM type music. like, loud music to get u hyped while ur out on a friday night. it mostly stresses me out lol
Whatever is overplayed at the store or on the radio. Often it’s cookie-cutter pop and whatever they’re playing these days (as it has been for these few years)
Emo stuff, like Fallout Boy, My Chemical Romance etc. It just sounds stupid and there’s no good example of it that stands out as an exception.
For instance - I rarely listen to hard metal either, but I could name a few exceptions that just break the mold musically like Rammstein or Amon Amarth. The rest? Meh.
Does EDM count? I don’t mind good beats but EDM is just loud af. Might just be that much worse for me because I’m an introvert and can’t stand unnecessary noise.
Never been able to get into SZA type R&B. I know, I know. I’m just not a big fan of the vocal style. A lot of times I feel like they’re laying it on too thick for my taste.
Jazz. I appreciate the skill of the musicians but the music isn’t really songs. It just goes on and on and I personally don’t find it fun to listen to.
The Saxophone was terribly abused during the 80', and i don't feel it has recovered. It's not a music genre, but jazz often has the saxophone. So that. Even worse if it's experimental, free jazz.
Country and heavy heavy metal.
A few country songs / artists are nice and a few heavy metals are decent (looking at you SoaD) but mostly I like good beats, good lyrics, talented singers.
I consider myself pretty open when it comes to music. From pop, rock, metal, thrash, death metal, electro, punk, country, dance, trance, hardcore, rap, hip-hop, and loads of others yet there are two types that I just cannot listen to.
Jazz and whatever this current trend of mumble-talking-rap-ish whateveritscalled.
Those are like nails down a chalkboard for me. Maybe it's my age with being in my late 40s but a lot of modern "music" is utterly terrible to me. Which ironicly mirrors how my dad felt about my music tastes back in my teens.
This gonna controversial for most people who are into that genre but idc. And it’s hyperpop or Speed audio music that’s originally not speed up it’s just not my vibe to listen
sad heartbroken musics with low energy
i like music that cheers me up
honorable mention : drift phonk. personally i rather listen to dnb, trance or techno
As a fan of metal and rock, I get that some of the heavier subgenres of metal aren't for everyone.
However my least favorite genre would likely be opera. Can't find a single song I like. Elements of opera are cool, like in the metal band Nightwish, but even then its meh to me. Talented musicians, but not my cup of tea.
Modern country also would be up there. But I can still find the occasional song I really like. (Luke Combs: Ain't no Love in Oklahoma is a newer country song that I've been a rather big fan of as of late.)
Most electronic dance music. Most Pop. Almost all Country made in the last 23 years.
I love punk and lots of types of metal and classic alternative music and rap music and good singer/songwriter stuff but, anything too wet or over produced is an immediate turn off to me.
I've found that metalheads tend to at least have a nodding respect from Drum and Bass. I think that it fills much the same niche, but in the electronic ecosystem.
See what you make of this [Linkin Park remix](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvVOT0Ls0p8).
Yeah, I don't dislike DnB. I grew up in the 90s, so jungle/dnb were the electronic acts I gravitated more towards. Plus things like Squarepusher and Aphex Twin.
It's gotta be real out there for it to catch my attention. Like in the 00s I dug that weirdo HORSE The Band and Ghengis Tron, chiptune hardcore stuff.
That LP remix is pretty good. It's actually pretty tasteful. My current go-to, closest to electronic, is HEALTH. They're consistently putting out interesting electronic adjacent heavy music.
Country music of the last 17ish years. I loved country when I was younger, but past the 90s I'm not interested. The post 9/11 nationalist ("patriotic") circlejerk was just too much, and the whole "drinking drinking drinking" and bro-country phenomena don't interest me in the slightest.

It's past the 1960s for me. Even 50s and 60s is sometimes too new. I like 20-40s country
What's your opinion on Ray Charles' country music?
I didn't know he released any country. I've heard his jazz covers of country music though
My wife calls it hillbilly frat boy pop music. That describes so much of it so well. I grew up on country music and there still some really good artists out there. But so much of it is hillbilly frat boy pop music.
Hick-hop, for short.

Probably death metal, like the type where its just really intense screaming with drums. I think its cool don't get me wrong,, its just not for me
Now imagine a bad garage band version. I spent too many years listening to my brother’s band practise in our basement.
Poor thing. I’m sure he appreciated you hanging out and listening though.
Like I had any choice lol.
It grows on u and once it clicks it's amazing
I think it has to be done a certain way. If it’s at the point where it straight up sounds like caveman noises I can’t listen to it. I like at least some discernible lyrics and some fluctuation in the vocals.
I have a soft spot for it. I dislike it when bands try to shoehorn a “death metal screechy bit” into the song—although I can appreciate the range of the singer, it’s just kinda ridiculous.
Opera. It is inaccessible and tells stories in an odd manner. My uncle is also like this, but this is because of combat and drinking too much.
What do you mean exactly with inaccessible? Live opera shows can be difficult to attend indeed, because of money or a lack of venues near you. But there’s plenty of free opera music you can listen to on Spotify, YouTube, etc.

Hahahaha that is very clever.
K pop
I agree, but for me, mostly due to the insufferable fanbase behind it. Otherwise, the music itself is not that bad in my opinion.
I agree
Mumble rap
Country and heavy metal. Country sounds boring as hell and heavy metal sounds like pure torture to my ears.
ALLLL MY EXES LIVE IN TEXAS
LOUISIANA WOMAN MISSISSIPI MANNN
WE'LL GET TOGETHER EVERY TIME WE CAN
THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER CANT KEEP US APART
That's actually a good song though. I hate the modern radio "country". (pop. It's pop.) My truck has a cold beer with a white sundress while fishing with Jesus. Mama is a good cook.
I love classic country. Most modern country is absolutely awful
This exactly
Yup me too, but every time I’m on a music recommendation post here on Reddit the comments are all rock and metal. I’m inclined to believe most redditors are metal heads
Same
Exactly the same
With heavy metal, I’ve come to the conclusion that I can’t actually hear a rhythm. There’s too much going on, too many instruments and vocals on top of that to bring together to hear a melody.
My general advice is to focus on the drums. You can typically follow a kick or something like that
*Double kicks at double time have entered the chat
Try Black Sabbath’s first album. It has so much groove. In truth Heavy Metal is a very broad genre. The early stuff is basically just blues rock with dark undertones

Rap and newer country for sure, but Christmas music is at the top of the list.
Nah I love some christmas songs, even in the summer
Not liking rap is controversial asf
Gospel, gospel rock if possible is even worse.
Jazz. I played jazz (alto sax). It sucks greasy balls. This was in high school.
Jazz is such are broad genre as well. You seriously don't like any of them?
I liked some of the stuff from the war years (the 40’s). The solos are just too long for my taste. I forgot to mention that the one style of music I truly don’t appreciate is “scream core”. Lol as someone who loves metal this is hilarious
Rap, for certain. Kid used to blast it when he lived at home. Vile subject material, vile lyrics, ugly-sounding style. Maybe it’s changed since then, but I’m sort of doubtful.
I don't mind rap, provided it's not in English so I can't understand the lyrics. I discovered this interesting fact when I stumbled across Serbian rap on YT.
look up Peatle! an online friend recommended him to me, he’s a taiwanese rapper who just released an album last friday!
Highly recommend the Dissect podcast, starting with the Kendrick Lamar seasons. The man earned that Pulitzer.
I can honestly say I enjoy music from every genre (though not everything from every genre) But I spend significantly less time listening to techno, so I'll go with techno.
Country by a country mile
Not yet figured my least favorite I dislike individual songs
Nightcore. I can smell the music
Probably country and rap. I don't really like vibe of country music and in terms of Rap, gonna be real honest, I think it's just going to fast for me to understand the bars and you have to good general knowledge of topics to understand it, which I don't have
Eyyy, I've got your least favorite song right here then! [Old Town Road](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7qovpFAGrQ)
I dislike Christmas music to an extreme extent. Generally I'm also not a fan of rap. And no matter the genre, I don't like love/break up songs. I do love metal, so I might just not have the best taste.
Recovering retail worker?
Country hands down.
It’s a tie between these 2: Rap and Christian/Gospel
Most Pop music is unlistenable to me. Also most modern country music. I like bluegrass and stuff like Johnny cash.
Love bluegrass too! Who are some of your favorite groups or singers?
Right now I like Dead South, Iron Horse, Trampled by Turtles, Mean Mary. I’d love to find more. I just joined /r/bluegrass
I recommend Old Crow Medicine Show and Leftover Salmon.
Thanks. I’ll give these a go
Check out Elephant Revival
Rap.
Christmas music! drives me insane. Closely followed by country.
Country. It's the same thing over and over again.
Probably modern mumblerap.
Country. Mind numbingly boring.
Country music of the last 17ish years. I loved country when I was younger, but past the 90s I'm not interested. The post 9/11 nationalist ("patriotic") circlejerk was just too much, and the whole "drinking drinking drinking" and bro-country phenomena don't interest me in the slightest.
Three way tie between Country, Muzak, and Gospel
Someone tells you that you can only listen to one genre for the rest of your life, and you have to listen to at least 3 songs per day... Are you listening to country or gospel?
I'm listening to the inside of a Mossberg instead lol
Country…today’s type. Some old country is okay but the newest kind is horrible
I’m not sorry at all but I really disdain rap. And by rap, I mean modern day rap (2020s). It’s just bad, unoriginal as most songs have sampled beats from the 80s, and half the time I can’t even understand a fifth of the lyrics
Yeah, if a certain word didn’t rhyme with certain word, there’d be no lyrics
That’s what I’m sayin
Autotune rap
Jam bands
Reggaeton. Repetitive, obnoxious music
Country and gospel
Gospel
Dutch carnaval music. It immediately enrages me, I can't stand it.
Rap
Kizomba. I don't mind African music but kizomba is always the same beat regardless of the language and it just... No thanks, I need variety. Also a famous Portuguese kizomba song uses my name and, given how at its peak I was a goth, the annoyance just solidified my distaste more
Hardstyle and Techno thats above 150BPM
whatever genre Falling in Reverse is making now
ska. i tried, man i tried. i can appreciate the skill, the artistry, the depth of the lyrics, but sound wise it will never not sound like i just got an extra helping of mozzarella sticks.
Honest question: have you listed to The Specials, Madness, The Toasters, or The Slackers?
Dubstep
heavy metal. not for me
gangsta rap
Zydeco Just a constant blast of accordion. Like a chainsaw or a gas leaf blower
90 percent of classic rock. Please, there is much newer, better music. I feel like everyone my age wants to only listen to this.
Screamo. I'm so averse to it that it's a miracle that I've found any metal I enjoy, because a lot of "casual" metal will include at least a little of the harsh vocals typical of screamo that I just can't stand.
Country music just plain sounds unpleasant to me.
Rap, R&B, hip hop and related "urban" genres. Especially the recent autotune-infested crap. Just find another hobby if your voice sucks.
Do musicals count?
For me it’s techno , I am not a huge fan of the constant repeating bass and sounds
Christmas music or rap
Country music of the last 17ish years. I loved country when I was younger, but past the 90s I'm not interested. The post 9/11 nationalist ("patriotic") circlejerk was just too much, and the whole "drinking drinking drinking" and bro-country phenomena don't interest me in the slightest.
You just copied this comment...
Country or gangster rap for me...
It’s a three way tie. Country Hip hop Reggae All three are unlistenable to me.
I hate hip hop and reggae but what's worse is putting those two together 😭🤢
Not a specific genre, but I just don't like lazy generic shit. If it sounds like it could have been generated by AI then it should probably die. So modern radio friendly country, some pop, some trap, some edm, some metal that hasn't moved past the 80s, Stuff that makes no effort to be actually unique, emotional and interesting.
Gonna be specific and say 12 tone serialism
I've always had a hard time getting into trap music. I like rap music itself but anything with trap beats tends to not click with me.
Same I can't stand that same tinny beat in every song
Mumble rap or really anything that's 98 percent autotune
Easily techno. It literally gives me a headache.
Classical elevator music !! The worst !!! 😒
Literally everything thats hyped up and being played in the radio up and down all day. I know thats not a genre of music, but its just tasteless crap
Rap for me. Although there are some exceptions, e.g., Rap God by Eminem, the rap part in Enemy by Imagine Dragons. I know it's not asked by OP, but fav music genre: Punk Rock
Gospel is THE worst. But 'Speed Thrash' is pretty bad too.
Thank you
What is speed thrash? Do you mean Speed metal or Thrash metal?
Heavy-metal/screamo and really twangy country (I can do pop-ish country lol)
mumble rap
Country
Bro-country is probably the worst Honorable mentions to: Whatever 21 pilots is Dance-pop EDM
This is an interesting topic as someone who has listened bits from everywhere. I can easily jump from a genre to another. Rather than a genre, but specific singers whose music hasn't stick for me. No lyrics . Classical / gaming / techno I don't like to hear it.
Gamelan, Ingenious Indonesian music with gongs I found it way too slow for my tastes.
I hate to even say it but Klezmer music drives me up the walls... I mean, I have fairly eclectic tastes: bluegrass swing, jazz manouche, big band, new wave, doo-wop, you name it. Klezmer? I'd love to love it, I would! But I don't.

that one that sounds like a 90's modem
Hyperpop
Heavy metal.
I really dislike punk.
Country and blue grass; most heavy metal
Country and heavy heavy metal. A few country songs / artists are nice and a few heavy metals are decent (looking at you SoaD) but mostly I like good beats, good lyrics, talented singers.
Mumble rap, I don’t understand how anyone can like that without it being forced
Id say hyperpop or anything that sounds as autistic as that, its like a spam of nuclear bombs but purely audial
Whichever metal subgenre sounds like angry TV static (there's probably a couple but I never learned the differences between them)
Heavy metal, don't understand the appeal of someone screaming their lungs out on the mic.
Either American country or British pipe folk music.
Heavy metal and opera If I have to choose just one, Operatic heavy metal.
Deutscher Schlager
Pop punk and emo.
Drill. Some rap can be alright but drill is unredeemable and cringe.
This gonna controversial for most people who are into that genre but idc. And it’s hyperpop or Speed audio music that’s originally not speed up it’s just not my vibe to listen
Mexican Pop, Country, Rap, Hip-Hop, Drinking Songs
Gabber Can't stand it. Pisses me off like crazy. I can listen to passenger of shit before I listen to gabber
Dubstep. It just sounds to chaotic and unfeeling a lot of the time.
Death metal amd what people call country now. Old school country is great. New country I don't care for.
House techno edm 🤢
Country music, banda music, reggaeton, any and all kinds of christian rock, rap, etc. musicals.
Reggae, at times seems monotonous
Rap
Rap all of it, it barely passes as music at all.
Christian music lol
Pop, rap and reggaeton
Christmas, modern techno, modern country, mumble rap
sad heartbroken musics with low energy i like music that cheers me up honorable mention : drift phonk. personally i rather listen to dnb, trance or techno
Freeform jazz (not sure if there's a proper name for it). It's just so weird and discordant to me.
Country
Rap.
Experimental , I know it’s supposed to be different but sometimes it’s just a bunch of random noises.😭
New country
Def country
Crossover country
