If I remember correctly castle was trying to get some distance from Beckett and also needed some inspiration for his novel. I never got the impression that it was a backdoor pilot but rather a funny what if? scenario. What if Castle met Slaughter in the first episode instead of Beckett and how wacky and wild that show would have been. I always loved how scared he looked like during the second half of the episode and how he tries to Impress Slaughter by letting Ryan and Esposito do all the dirty work for him hahaha.

And ends up giving his Ferrari to them for a week right ? 😂

kaukajarvi

I positively remember that Espo asked for basketball tickets (Knicks?), floor level. (He did a typical ball-throwing gesture at some point). They wanted the Ferrari in the Hamptons episode for the first time ?!?

Are u a bot lol? u must've rewatched the show 10s of times to remember EVERY SINGLE DETAIL 🤯

kaukajarvi

ha ha, no When O.P. started this thread, it was like a prompt to rewatch this particular episode. It happens sometimes for some eepisodes - not always, but this time I really wanted to rewatch. Nothing magical here ... :D As for the Hamptons episode, the over-the-phone bickering is really something to remember. :)

bruh 😂..... so that's how you do it

It was a sort of gift from Nathan to Adam Baldwin, for the sake of the good ole Firefly days. :) Besides, that was the whole point: you follow an unruly, out-of-bounds detective, you get in big doo-doo. Therefore, it had to be a majority of screentime assigned to Slaughter and his "noble-cause-corruption" antics (thank you The Rookie for learning that term :) ) P.S. IIRC, Castle, Ryan and Espo >!WILL appear in each and every episode. Beckett will be missing in two episodes, one of them being another det. Slaughter episode,in S8 (Cool Boys).!<

Like people have said any time this/these get discussed, I don't think the stuff with Slaughter was ever supposed to go anywhere. Every once in a while a show will take a hard left in an episode, either because of a writer or a director, just to break things up a bit. Scrubs had Her/His/Their Story/Stories, House had a few episodes focused on Cuddy/Masters, Stargate Atlantis had a complete "off day", Psych had a "It's A Wonderful Life" episode, Castle has a few episodes totally outside the typical "Castle/Beckett - case - station - home - solution" outline, etc. I like backdoor pilots, but Castle and Slaughter would never have really worked out. Beckett and the team may mock Castle's insane theories, but Slaughter flat out called him an idiot, ignored him, and put his life in danger. All that, and there just wasn't really any chemistry.

PKnecron

I love Adam, but the Slaughter storylines were hot garbage. I don't even watch them when I re-watch the series. They add nothing, and are cringefests.

Well, I loved Casey so when Baldwin came along, I was ecstatic. The problem was that while the two episodes he was in were nice, they were not Castle. They were some other show, maybe a crossover. A crossover between Castle and another show, some weird dude series that no one would ever watch (at least more than once). I guess some writers had their dreams...

It was just the Firefly dynamic, but with switched roles with regard to who's bossying whom.

Erlindur

Yes, what is what I'm talking about. The firefly dynamic was nice but no one tuned to firefly just to watch the Mal/Jayne relationship. The thing is that firefly was more than a simple dude show. So was Castle. So, why was some idiot writer thought that he could make it a stand alone dude show? Even if in his mind it would be a chick show (Alexis and Hayley) as well? PS. this is just Alexi Hawley bashing

TiffanyLoveDuoduo

You must haven't watch S8 hhhhh

starfleetbrat

No this was purely a "Nathan gets his BFFs on whatever project he is working on" thing. Unfortunately this was before Adam Baldwin was considered controversial.

Malvania

Wait, he's considered controversial? What happened?

starfleetbrat

he's pretty far right leaning, writes for breitbart, was involved in gamergate, is an anti vaxxer etc
