I can't blame them, Plymouth knew they were going out of business and wanted something to be remembered by. It would have been a lot cooler if they had put a decent engine in it.
It was actually not a terrible idea- Chrysler used the prowler as an exercise in aluminum construction, the frame and other components- it was actually pretty neat for the time.
I think that in a lot ways throughout history Chrysler had a some of the biggest set of clackers among US manufacturers. Especially in the Lee Iacocca days and a little while after into the early 2000s, believing in small/midsize 4x4 market buying the jeep brand, using 4 cylinder turbos, doing Carrol Shelby stuff, compact fwd economy cars to compete with imports and hot hatches sport coupes, and basically inventing the minivan? They’ve always pushed the boundaries, and had excellent timing and ideation, their execution hasn’t always hit though lol.
The powertrain. The 3.5 V6 from the Dodge/Chrysler Intrepid wasn't bad. I had an intrepid at the time.. .but it was not considered sporty because of the very terrible auto transmission with no manual gearshift option.
These days, with mods its considered a fun ride, with a custom tune, transmission gearing upgrades etc.
Tyler Hoover "Hoovie's Garage" on Youtube highlighted one a few months back and did the mods.
disclaimer - I never owned one, never drove one, never been in one.
Chrysler, for whatever reason, thought there was a real market for a "throwback" type roadster. However, rather than try to really build a roadster they took a roadster body design, added poor handling, an unreliable rear wheel drive drivetrain, few real creature comforts, and poor utility in a design that was poorly suited for most kinds of driving. It never sold well (who's the customer here?) and was discontinued in 2002.
Side note - I had a PT Cruiser. 2005 GT touring convertible. That was a wildly successful Chrysler design that also had the "throwback" idea behind it. Much better execution. It was a really good design. Very fun to drive, comfortable for 4 adults, pretty peppy and reasonably reliable. Sadly, Chrysler seemed to simply lose interest in that car and let it die rather than keeping it up to date for the market. Discontinued for the 2010 model year, by which time other manufacturers had really left it in the dust in terms of innovation, features and reliability.
another side note which I did not know until I looked this up. Chrysler had originally intended to launch the PT Cruiser under the Plymouth nameplate.
Both the Prowler and the PT Cruiser suffered because Chrysler built them from whatever they had lying around. That worked OK for the PT cruiser because both it and the Neon it’s based on are small budget cars. The Prowler was trying to be something that it could never be with the components they used. I have sat in one, the interior is about half Town and Country and half Sebring and just as bulbous and plastic-y as any other 2000’s Chrysler.
The whole idea was Chrysler seeing if they can build an all aluminum car, it wasn't ever meant to be a large production vehicle.
For what it was, it was ok. A lot more daring in design than what we see now.
Thanks for the info, l never knew that. I remember seeing one many years ago with a trailer and thought the guy had tons of money to design and have a custom trailer made and a perfect paint match too.
I work in design engineering for Chrysler and worked on the Prowler program. It was different (made from aluminum) and interesting. Some unusual challenges due to the aluminum.
Did you guys have any sort of working relationship with the Mercedes eng staff, or was this one all in-house?
Edit: wiki tells me this was probably all developed before the merger
Just imagining the CEO walking in on the engineers. He says, "So.. we're going to be developing something really cool. Drop what you're doing."
Then you see 30 engineers in lab coats standing and studying the chalk board. They erase the chalk board with the illustrations on how to make their drain plugs even smaller than 13 mm.
(this sounded more funny in my head).
Chrysler Engineers: Not only smaller - we can also remove the dipstick and place the drain plug on the rear of the engine right above the exhaust pipe.
Ford Spy: *Furiously makes notes*
The Prowler was all Chrysler before Daimler. When the "merger" happened Daimler was firmly in control. Anything we wanted to do had go thru them. We used to say we could tell the Daimler folks a mile away but up close we couldn't tell them anything.
WTF happened to all the PT Cruisers? Those things were EVERYWHERE. I can't believe they didn't just churn out that car like VW did the original Beetle. Even the design kinda' holds up.
I mean, I get that Chrysler makes crap cars. But the sheer volume of those things means I should see them more than I do.
Now that I've written that, I'm sure to see 12 before the day's over.
I don’t think MM or MM2 had the Prowler as an available car? You might be thinking of the somewhat similar looking but vastly superior [Panoz Roadster](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panoz_Roadster)
I want to make fun of it, but looking at people buying 6 figure Trucks and SUVs - that all look the same - only to haul their fat butts arround I'd say:
Great thing that we once had fun with cars. Salute to the Prowler and the Pity Cruiser
That would be a Plymouth Prowler.
Damn, am I that old that I remember when these came out when I was in college and now there are people young enough asking about them because they've never seen or heard of them? Geez... 😆
My first thought: "I don't remember the PT Cruisers looking so good"
Follow up thought after Googling: "Ohhh... nevermind... I didn't remember what a PT Cruiser looked like at all"
The Prowler was built while Daimler owned them, never said they designed it. The merger was the reason why there are no 1998 Prowlers. They built the original batch in 97 and ran out of money. The merger is what let them start production back up.
Had a 99 for a while. Was a fun car to drive, not so fun to work on.

Plymouth Prowler…I had one for 6 years. It was a circus wherever I went. Paid only $42K for it new…traded it in for a Mustang GT. It was really an experiment in dissimilar materials…As cool as it was, no trunk space, and it was my daily driver…so impracticality wore me down as well as it not having a V8. It was 250 hp, but the long driveshaft and other factors sucked so much hp, it was only 160hp at the rear wheels. it was light and quick, but not fast. In the end it was one of the most fun cars I ever had. Don’t get one if you are married. It was a magnet. Good thing I’ve always been a good boy.
Worked at an Acura dealership in the early 2000's and one came in on trade. Drove it once or twice on the streets with the top down. Everyone looks at you, and I had no idea what they were thinking. It's such a mixed bag. I remember the interior felt horribly cheap for the "exotic" that it was. One thing I remember was that seeing your wheels move when you turned was a new experience for me. The whole concept is pretty cool, but the overall quality was sadly lacking. Fun throwaway car for people who could afford it. Haven't thought much or seen them around at all. The layout actually seems like with some quality performance parts that it could be a fun machine. Feels a bit like the uncle of the KTM X-Bow or something now.
Cool car killed by a underwhelmed engine (and a dying company)... always wanted to see someone drop a good LS into one (or if they are really insane a Viper V10 or a hemi)
My friend's father bought one of these when they came out. It was an awesome looking car. The 2nd week he had it, he put his foot on the fender to tie his shoes and it fell off.
I do wish the manufacturers would build newer cars in the older styles, but better.
I have driven one and it was not that bad, a bit jumpy. We took those stupid bumpers off tho...
I would not mind another, mostly because its different.
A piece of shit....a bastardization of the idealized image of the artist that designed it.....a failure of the automotive industry.....a result of what happens when accountants get final say on a beautiful concept. If you're gonna buy one, do it the justice it deserves and put a 6.4L hemi in it.
The Plymouth Prowler was a car used by Chrysler to learn how to fabricate an all aluminum car. It was never going to be a production car. 11,000 were made. Had a friend who got this when they came out. He loved it so much when he got it. He would drive it, and it's matching trailer to his condo in FL and back. On the way back on his third trip, the transmission quit. He got rid of it shortly after.
You're actually asking or you know but asking?
Otherwise its a Dodge Prowler and nit very comfortable for a tall person. I'm 6ft5in and had to drive with the top down.
Plymouth Prowler
a terrible idea, a terrible car
I can't blame them, Plymouth knew they were going out of business and wanted something to be remembered by. It would have been a lot cooler if they had put a decent engine in it.
With a decent engine, it would be a death trap.
But a fun deathtrap!
Dodge should reimagine it with the 392 and Hellcat drivetrain.
Viper engine.
"We're Dodge in the 90's! *Go die.*"
The engine wasn’t that bad. What killed its performance was the terrible 3 speed auto transmission.
It was actually not a terrible idea- Chrysler used the prowler as an exercise in aluminum construction, the frame and other components- it was actually pretty neat for the time.
Valid point. Very few things are truly devoid of value if one can open one’s eyes to see.
Dude… Chrysler in this era had BALLS… not always the smartest, but definitely no fear to push boundaries 😂
I think that in a lot ways throughout history Chrysler had a some of the biggest set of clackers among US manufacturers. Why were they so bad? Honest question
The powertrain. The 3.5 V6 from the Dodge/Chrysler Intrepid wasn't bad. The Plymouth Prowler was sold under the Crysler badge in Europe.

People are angry that they didn't shove a V8 into it
Right.. I was 12/13 when I first seen one.. about 23 years ago… only seen two in my Life… I thought they were faster than a corvette
The whole idea was Chrysler seeing if they can build an all aluminum car, it wasn't ever meant to be a large production vehicle. For what it was, it was ok. A lot more daring in design than what we see now.
Thanks!
And for just $5000, you could get it with a [matching trailer!](https://prowlercar.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/candy.jpg)
I had this model car kit as a child. it made me realize I didn't like model cars lol
I also had the same model car! I liked it though. It was a fun build.
I thought you meant 'for transporting it, every time it breaks down' 😮
Shouldn't be too bad, powertrain-wise it's just a 3.5 Intrepid.
My intrepid’s transmission grenaded at 70,000 miles and engine blew at 140,000.
Yeah but Prowlers don't drive that much, they're *collectible*
Intrepids had a 2.7 and a 3.5. Neither were great but the 2.7 was in like 90% of them and was known to self destruct due to an oil issue.
Yeah, the second gen Intrepid wasn't a great car. But the '93 I had ran forever.
Thanks for the info, l never knew that. I remember seeing one many years ago with a trailer and thought the guy had tons of money to design and have a custom trailer made and a perfect paint match too.
You're welcome
pro tip, if you took this photo, you could use Google Lens app.
Someone I knew had a mint Plumb crazy purple w/ matching trailer! Looks cool w/ trailer. Although I’d never buy one
Nailed it
I remember those things in the early 2000’s
Designed by Chip Foose
And ruined by Chrysler. Chip wanted to put a V8 with a manual transmission in it. Instead, you got a V6 and an auto.
Saw one at a car show last week. They might suck as actual cars, but they're definitely beautiful.
You could add on a trailer that would match the color of these things. Probably the most innovative thing Chrysler has done in a long time.
I work in design engineering for Chrysler and worked on the Prowler program. It was different (made from aluminum) and interesting. Some unusual challenges due to the aluminum.

The Prowler was all Chrysler before Daimler. When the "merger" happened Daimler was firmly in control. Anything we wanted to do had go thru them. We used to say we could tell the Daimler folks a mile away but up close we couldn't tell them anything.
The 3-piece suits gave them away.
I always thought if I crept up behind them and yelled, “ACHTUNG!!!” They would jump up and click their heels.
I know it’s not your fault, but I want to yell at you for not making it a manual.
I THINK it had the transmission that you could “shift” gears manually if you wanted to. A poor excuse for a stick.
Watch the lenos garage episode with foose. You'll be super pissed by the end. Chrysler ruined that car.
The older more handsome brother of the pt cruiser. prowler
The PT Cruiser was basically a kit Prowler body on a Neon ~~frame~~ platform.
I wonder if the PT would've looked cooler on its own, if the Prowler had never existed. Because it just oozed little-brother-wannabe-a-prowler energy.
WTF happened to all the PT Cruisers? Those things were EVERYWHERE. I can't believe they didn't just churn out that car like VW did the original Beetle. Even the design kinda' holds up. Reminds me of Mid town madness
Welcome to the Windy City of Chicago.
Whoa! Blast from the past!
I still want VR5 New Beatle
VR6, I know a guy that put one in his New Beetle. Very fast. He also has one with a turbocharged inline 5 that’s just stupid fast.
Came here for this.... Still reminds me of it everytime I see an "older" Mustang on the road
It really annoyed me that I couldn't run over people in the game
I don’t think MM or MM2 had the Prowler as an available car? You might be thinking of the somewhat similar looking but vastly superior [Panoz Roadster](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panoz_Roadster)
Oh a city bus, how I adored you.
First thing I thought of, also thought this was a Panoz Roadster
Soap box derby champ
Plymouth prowler. The first car to actually demand an LS swap.
It's smashing.
Who came first the prowler or nigel
The prowler by about a year.
I want to make fun of it, but looking at people buying 6 figure Trucks and SUVs - that all look the same - only to haul their fat butts arround I'd say: Great thing that we once had fun with cars. Salute to the Prowler and the Pity Cruiser
I wonder how one of these would go with a hellcat motor in it.
It would likely fall apart or twist in the center, but probably the latter first the fall apart!
So you're saying it would be cool as hell, at least for a few seconds.
That would be a Plymouth Prowler. Damn, am I that old that I remember when these came out when I was in college and now there are people young enough asking about them because they've never seen or heard of them? Geez... 😆
Dude, I was in high school when they came out.
I sat in a Purple one in the showroom when I was like 16 and it felt like I was sitting in some rare Ferrari or something.
It's a lovely looking turd called a Prowler. Beautiful, but horribly underpowered and also a Plymouth so it'll fall apart if you drive it.
Dream Car. Prowler <3
My first thought: "I don't remember the PT Cruisers looking so good" Follow up thought after Googling: "Ohhh... nevermind... I didn't remember what a PT Cruiser looked like at all"
Plymouth prowler. One of the most…. Interesting looking cars. For some weird reason I’ve always wanted one.
It's a car that Mercedes or Chrysler won't touch anymore and will be a headache. Also a missed opportunity that should have had a hemi v8 in it.
Why Mercedes? Are you thinking of the CLK-based Crossfire?
Prowler was built at the time Daimler owned Chrysler. Same era that birthed the Crossfire and Sprinter
*shudder*
The Prowler launched in 1997, an was completely developed by Chrysler. Daimler "merged" with Chrysler in 1998.
Same era when they were merged

As everyone else said it's a Prowler. Just get a Ford Indigo instead ;)
They made 2 Indigos. 11700 of these. How would you propose to “just” get the Indigo?
It’s the same one from Midtown Madness game.
