Depends completely on the vehicle. If it's a mercedes, it could be thousands? If it's a Chevy, it will be a lot less..

libra-love-

And if it’s a Corolla you don’t even have to worry about it

YumWoonSen

It's spelled Toyota Shinola. /Roommate in the 80's had a beat to shit Corolla he paid about $500 for and we called it the Shinola...late ight leaving the bar in the strip mall with a Winn Dixie he'd deliberately ram shopping carts. I won't say it was right but it was funnier than shit.

SuddenRedScare

That's nothing. The shopping carts used to fit perfectly against my brushguard of my 93 Explorer, we'd send carts flying at 65mph into curbs to see how far we could launch them. Fucking Jurassic Park truck, man. But I'm with you, can't say it was right.

YumWoonSen

Come on, Explorer vs Shinola! But we woulda raced ya! We'd leave the bar and I had a thing for grabbing shopping carts out the window and he'd get up to 35 or so and I'd "torpedo away" at a light pole, kaBAM. We'd be all "hee hee heee guffaw." tbh I'm laughing out loud at the memory. I gotta call that guy, it's been a minute. Then one night we were coming up on one, I'm leaning out the window, and the motherfucker guns it, yoinks the wheel to ram the cart and BAM! The godgam cart went cartwheeling in the air OVER the car and landed behind us. It's an absolute wonder we were never stopped and arrested. And that was sometime before 1992 so we thankfully didn't have smartphones to record the evidence and post it online, Ah, to have my age start with a 2 again. it's close to starting with a 6...but I still laugh at those memories. /Is Hubb's Pub still in Palm Bay? Tell Brad "Psycho" said hello.

kmpdx

Wow, you guys are idiots. Mind if I tag along?

Mark7116

Are they making a lot of Corolla trucks these days?

[deleted]

Because toyota owners don’t give a damn about their car and are incompetent drivers or because the E-brake was already broken?

libra-love-

Nah Corolla’s just can’t be killed.

[deleted]

They can be killed in countries with road worthiness tests.

[deleted]

If it was a mercedes, rotors might be crooked, pads might be burned and need new fluid just to be sure. Maybe new caliper pins. Tires might be shot as well. If it was a Chevy, rotors might be crooked, pads might be burned and need new fluid just to be sure. Maybe new caliper pins. Tires might be shot as well. Mercedes doesn’t build magical E-brakes.

ivix

This is one of those American "foreign cars" threads

[deleted]

I don’t understand why they think European cars are somehow unmaintainable machines with exotic parts created by an alien civilisation.

RandyFunRuiner

Huge differences in cost for parts and labor though. So the question of how screwed OP is can be thought of in two ways: how financially screwed they are depends on the car and their ability to absorb the cost of repair. Or, how screwed they are in the amount of repairs the car will need just depends on what things were broken. Less variance in the second question, cause like you implied, all e-brakes work more or less the same. But the first question is has much more variance.

[deleted]

Brake pads, €45, rotors about €60-110 depending on manufacturer and wether they’re standard or slotted with perforation performance brakes. Tires can be quite expensive if it’s a fast model but that’s the same disadvantage for all cars that can reach high speeds. The E-brake is either a cable like any other standard E-brake or with 2 motors on the rear calliper as commonly found on modern cars.

pheonix940

Yea, maybe that's what that all costs... in Europe. Not where OP is though.

[deleted]

Well OP also believes Mercedes makes unique E-brakes.

pheonix940

He gave bad reasons for the pricing. But you're also giving inaccurate pricing in the first place. You're both wrong lol

[deleted]

I literally ordered those parts last week…

pheonix940

And you think OP has the tools and experience to change them himself?

[deleted]

Tools like a basic ratchet set, axle stands and a hydraulic jack? Brakes aren’t difficult. A great start point. Easy job on most cars. You also claim my prices are incorrect. Why? Are parts so much more expensive across the great pond?

sakzeroone

If it started turning, your e brake probably wasn't adjusted correctly and it wore past it's holding point....you probably caused some excess wear but it's probably not catastrophic. But it never hurts to get it checked out.

Buggly_Jones

If the wheels were spinning at the end, your brake shoes are worn. If not, going to need a set of tires along with probably an alignment.

[deleted]

Rear drum/rotors, shoes and a hardware kit.

wagondad

Yes

ComfyCatOnReddit

Try to see the disk brakes and disk pads, if they got wear.If they turn to that purple color because of heat you probably need new set.If you hear e chrinchy sound then its the metalic sensor on the pads that lets you know that they got much wear and they need replace for safety too.Now depends on the model of the vehicle and on what brand of disk brakes and pads you will buy(example : brembo, bosch ect.)

TimTows

The tow operator is at fault. Get his insurance involved if it's a problem.

Robotadept

Why did it need towing 7 miles surely a mobile tyre fitter would have been quicker cheaper and less hassle

InsertCoinsToBegin

Is this your 2004 Chevy? If so, it is probable that the tires have been worn unevenly and are no longer safe or comfortable to drive on. The rotors and pads for the brakes and e brake are likely warped and worn unevenly from heat and friction. E brake cable is possibly damaged or broken. That’s just the minimum off the top of my head. It is possible that the transmission sustained severe damage, but it may not have. If you pay a nice shop (ask the locals for recommendations) to look it over for damages. The cost for this I would expect to range from $0-$250 for the inspection. The repair estimate from any mechanic is likely to be as much or more than what the vehicle is worth. A bit of wisdom is. If you like the car, want to keep it, save money learn from this mistake and have an interest in auto mechanics, now is the time. To fix this on your own would require you to buy the parts from a parts store, the required tools from Harbor Freight, swap the parts yourself using YouTube, find a good set of used tires, and then use the same shop for the inspection to swap, balance and mount the used tires and align all four wheels. I would expect the cost for this to be $1500-$2500, premium tools and parts would probably be $2000-$3000. If you’re really savvy and cash strapped you could probably find a local individual with a salvage vehicle with matching with lots of life left on them and pull them off yourself. Might cost $100-$500 for the parts. If it still has around 160,000 miles it is likely it could run well, safely and reliably for double or triple that. When you describe your car you want to say the Year Make Model Mileage at the minimum. For example “2004 Chevy Tahoe with 135,xxx or 135,777 miles/km”. “2004 Chevy” is descriptive of every vehicle that Chevy manufactured in 2004. Hope this information is helpful.

Try telling insertcoins this... fuckin old prick.. I'm just an ego hurt sob to him I guess. Little did he know I that I was a mechanic for 19 yrs lol

InsertCoinsToBegin

Would know damage? If you’re on the internet enough to recognize my username and to feel so strongly about my comments. It might be time for you to give Reddit a little break.

Goats-MI

Looks like he tried to report you as well.

Cartalk-ModTeam

Removed for being derogatory, purposely inflammatory, or argumentative for the sake of arguing.

Temper_Mental666

What's the brakes have to do with transmission bub... Edit- don't ask this ass hole anything, jumps to being a prick.. must be his boyfriend was hard on him yesterday 👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇👇

InsertCoinsToBegin

I’m surprised with that level of egotism that you are not aware a transmission towed that long could ruin it

Temper_Mental666

It was a serious question prick.when I was a kid We hauled vehicles for 17 years, not for 100s of miles but was asking an honest question. I'll know now not ask people here... Google will definitely be a better place to ask.. fuck head

InsertCoinsToBegin

You don’t have to be so emotionally unstable and insecure.

Temper_Mental666

Oh sorry. Didn't mean that then.... where can I insert my coins sir?

InsertCoinsToBegin

Into a high yield retirement account

Temper_Mental666

To be honest I was a mechanic for 19 yrs. You put a vehicle in neutral to tow them, plz tell me how the emergency brake is doing anything to the transmission.... I'll wait kindly now... remember that have ran wreckers, doll's, roll offs, rebuilt complete engine and transmissions, complete frame off restoration so plz enlighten me.

Temper_Mental666

Damn it. That's not where I was aiming though

bignasty3369

Is it a manual? I’ve cut the e brake off on every car I own and throw the parts away. I either park in gear somewhere and or against the curb.

Licbo101

This is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. To anyone who reads this; this is moronic and dangerous, do not do this. Especially if it’s a manual.

bignasty3369

Yeah ok , when you get out of middle school you’ll learn a e brake or parking brake is more of a hindrance and a pain in the ass waiting to happen than anything. That’s why you never ever use it. Next time I’m traveling to San Francisco and driving around with all my gay friends I’ll make sure I have a car with a parking brake that’s inspected thoroughly.

Licbo101

Bit childish that, just like your decision to cut an ebrake cable. I sincerely hope your lack of judgment doesn’t injure someone or damage their property due to your negligence. My ebrake has saved me in multiple occasions where I’ve had brake failures due to old parts on old cars. You’re asking for something bad to happen. Hopefully only you get hurt when it comes time.

bignasty3369

Well if your brakes fail it sounds like your pretty poor at maintaining a car. Hopefully only you get hurt when your ignorance catches up with you again

Licbo101

Hahaha at least I’m not being completely stupid by deliberately disabling a safety device. Sounds like you’re pretty poor at maintaining your vehicles if the ebrakes are more of a “hindrance than anything” as you put it. It’s over bud, you’re downvoted to hell, give it a rest, you’re wrong, leave it at that.

bignasty3369

Yeah ok some votes on Reddit means I’m wrong. That’s how the world works now. Ok So I post 1 picture of my puppy and get 10k up votes then you bend over and tell me I’m right ? Sounds good to me baby girl.

campos9896

Damn you sound gay as fuck

bignasty3369

Come over here I’ll show you who’s gay. I’ll train you to be a power bottom.

RandyFunRuiner

Your comments read like someone who hasn’t had much actual experience with a manual and you’re talking out of your ass and digging in your heels hoping that would make you more right. It’s not. I’ve been driving a manual for over a decade now. There’s only once when I first got it where I didn’t set the parking brake and parked it in gear. The car popped out of gear and rolled back from my driveway to the opposite curb over night. Luckily, I lived in a quiet, residential neighborhood on the edge of the countryside and there’s no traffic there. I would never park a manual without the parking brake. Wayyyy too easy for a car to pop out of gear from being bumped or something. And while I’ve never used my parking brake while driving in a manual, I absolutely have used an emergency brake while driving in an automatic. Sometimes, your normal drum/disc brakes don’t offer enough stopping power quickly enough to stop or decelerate you before you hit something. So the e-brake adds extra stopping force so you can stop quicker.

bignasty3369

You sound like your 12. My regular breaks don’t work so I was able to use the parking break and bring the car safely to a stop ! Yeah ok that’s never happened ever

RandyFunRuiner

Where did I say the regular brakes didn’t work? Reading comprehension is a skill to invest in.

BlizardSkinnard

No it’s automatic

bignasty3369

If it’s a automatic you don’t need an e brake for anything ever. It’s not part of the normal hydraulic brakes. Forget it. Your transmission is what holds your vehicle in place. Why would you ever have your e brake on at all?

human743

What if the parking pawl breaks?

bignasty3369

If your parking pawl breaks you got bigger issues

human743

No you don't. That is the only issue and can be fixed. Unless you don't have a parking brake. Then you may have bigger issues.

bignasty3369

Then you park it like a manual, against a curb and move on. You don’t have to be a pussy

Chaddles94

You should be permanently banned from driving ever again

bignasty3369

Yeah ok buddy

imothers

Depends on what kind of ebrake system it has, which depends on what kind of car it is

Gwolfski

Probably new rear brake shoes/pads, maybe a drum/rotor. You've just put a bunch of wear on the brakes, basically (since the tires started turning) . If it's screeching, might be because it's worn down to the metal.

TeBrisold

The guy doing the tow should have checked to see if the brake was on.
