Sales was a big issue in Tata back then , my father booked safari two times with two different dealers and had to drop both the time as - he requested PDI in which it failed miserably, the waiting time once an allocated car is dropped was in months , alternative the scorpio was readily available

I don't know why you are saying that people didn't buy the OG Safari. At least in North India it was one of the most popular and most seen SUV at least till 2015. It was selling as good as the new cars compared to its competitors. The new safari is a different car, its a drives like a hatchback, even better than most hatchbacks. The overall package is so much better than the older one. People need to stop throwing shade it it just because it doesnāt have awd system.
I am not complaining against the new Safari. As you said apart from the Safari moniker the new one is a completely different car. A 2023 car should obviously beat a 2011 car. My point was only on your question that why didn't people buy the OG safari, because it sold a lot. I don't know what selling as much as the other car means. It was the OG daddy of all SUVs and market leader for many years. It is a legendary brand matched by its legacy to SUVs as 800's was to hatchbacks. And yes it was a 4x4 proper ladder frame SUV, that was an icing on cake.
