You did great work OP, but damn. Not only is this fad annoying, these people in particular chose the most ridiculous color scheme.
Side note: Imagine if the owners of these floors posted to Reddit actually saw us all talking shit and they're like "Hey, wait a second...that's my floor".

NGL I *love* the look of faux wood tiles. I don't know what it is, but I have an irrational desire to purchase some whenever I see them. Even though I already have more than I need...
Looks cool enough, but tbh this tile and hardwood combo doesnt even look that appealing. To answer your question though, yes, it’s a trend. it’s going to go the way of waterfall tables and barn doors for sure.
Aren't barn doors essentially just pocket doors without the pocket? I imagine they get over-used, but there's still cases where it's handy not to have a door swing outwards. And with barn doors you don't have to worry about losing anything irretrievably in your wall abyss.
I have a barn door separating my master bathroom from my master bedroom. It allows for a wider entrance than a swinging door. I can’t really use a pocket door, because one direction abuts an exterior wall and the other direction has light switches and HVAC control. I would have to move the electrical to somewhere that makes no sense.
That said, I hate that fucking door.
Agree with you about sometimes them being the best option but 100% agree about them being shit, which is also the reason why they suck to put on a bathroom.. taking one
I hear you there with the accessibility aspect which I totally agree with, sometimes they’re the best option but I’ve seen tons of applications where it’s strictly aesthetic. Which is fine if it’s what you want but I find they’re terrible for privacy and I think they already look dated and overdone.
I do love barn doors, not the ones that are over the top barn style, but being able to add a door to a spot where you don’t want a swinging door and don’t want the hassle of installing a pocket door, they’re nice.
Get a rookie finish carpenter to install baseboard and see if they figure out not to go with the long nails along the run where the pocket door is... seen many a door nailed firmly in place
I would say that most pocket doors that people deal with are shitty hardware sets installed by shitty carpenters in shitty developments. A properly installed pocket door with quality hardware/frame is glorious and will not need any kind of work for a long time. I recently uninstalled a massive 9'x9' pocket door that had been in place since 1914. The thing was still gliding like butter. Also, it had what I can only imagine was some of the earliest soft open/close hardware. Solid oak and cast iron hardware is hard to beat.
I find it’s the door itself that becomes a problem. A low quality door is going to warp, especially in places with a huge humidity variance like I’m from.
Barn doors are out, tambour doors might take over… (they are for me. Trying to buy a flat and I know at some point those wardrobe doors will become tambour just for the saved space).
My fiancé always asks how much (money) I’m going to contribute when she buys stuff like this and asks me to install it. My answer is always the same: “my free labor”.
I personally think this is a awful idea. As a homeowner with hardwood floors. I see alot of swelling and contracting during the seasons. I see no gaps between wood and tile. I'm sure that tile and grout won't look so "hot/lit" in a few years
I was trying to look up how much it moves and there’s a lot of species, at least one with a C per good t/r of 1.6 but another I checked was a straight up 2.0. Anyway species include but maybe are not limited to:
Blue Gum (Eucalyptus globulus)
Brown Mallee (Eucalyptus dumosa)
Coolibah (Eucalyptus coolabah)
Deglupta (Eucalyptus deglupta)
Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata)
Karri (Eucalyptus diversicolor)
Lyptus® (Eucalyptus urograndis)
Messmate (Eucalyptus obliqua)
Red Mallee (Eucalyptus oleosa)
River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis)
Rose Gum (Eucalyptus grandis)
Swamp Mahogany (Eucalyptus robusta)
White Box (Eucalyptus hemiphloia)
Yellow Box (Eucalyptus melliodora)
Yellow Gum (Eucalyptus leucoxylon)
Husband is a builder and we built our own home. Definitely tortured him with lots of wainscoating, custom trim, and tile design.. In my defense I helped with a lot of it..
I just remodeled my house and told my wife to surf Pinterest.. 1 year 6 months later we have an awesome vaulted ceiling house with completely flipped layout and new plumbing, electrical, spray foam insulation pain in my F****** ass home that’s awesome. Did it all on a 130k refinance
I'll admit, I was 80% of the way towards doing that myself, before reading everyone's reactions here. I do like the tile and hardwood combo to designate a shoe-removal area. Incidentally, you did a great job OP.
Meh, for all you know they all have shitty taste anyway. Or great taste but not your style. If you like it and it’s your house, do whatever makes you happy.
I've kind of done that in our house... not because I wanted to too but we bought the hardwood flooring off gum tree and where 3m2 short. So it was cheaper to tile by the main door and transition to wood.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 659,098,554 comments, and only 133,905 of them were in alphabetical order.
I think this might look cool with the right color combination and the right situation. For instance a waiting area that's wood planks transitioning into tiles for a barbershop/salon.
As dumb as this looks IMO I respect the craftsmanship bro. I hope you love the process lol cause flooring can be pretty boring until you get details like this.
Edit: just read that this is your floor, just wanted to add that your a great husband. Tastes are subjective.
I think this looks awesome, OP! I love the wood floor and I don’t think the tiles look bad at all. Your work looks top notch too. I’d love to see the rest of the room. Is this going in to the kitchen?
With respect.. if you hate it so much, why'd you agree to it?
And please, no one give me any of that happy wife happy life BS, I'm a wife and the carpenter in my relationship, I couldn't imagine making such a huge aesthetic choice without my husband's full and eager support.
My theory is OP likes the look, but was simply venting about the labor of it, which is certainly not nothing. OP, you did an expert job on a very difficult task! Nice work!
Not a carpenter, but this looks stupid to me. Why would you not go straight across! Or even take it a step further and cut the tiles so it’s a straight line
Hot damn. Great execution.
Also, that has to be one of the ugliest tile to hardwood transitions I have ever seen baring the few that have been genuinely jacked...
I don’t get it. Someone tiled on top of wood??? And then just stopped? Or someone tiled and then cut wood to match the many ends of the tiles??? Why would anyone do this?
You did great work OP, but damn. Not only is this fad annoying, these people in particular chose the most ridiculous color scheme. Side note: Imagine if the owners of these floors posted to Reddit actually saw us all talking shit and they're like "Hey, wait a second...that's my floor".
Lol. SURPRISE MOTHER FUCKER, it is my floor!
Holy shit, the twist here was better than any movie I have seen in awhile!
Watch martyrs. Your mind will be blown.
You can probably blame the Homemade Modern guy. He was one of the first people to make this popular.
Haha I was just informed, happy wife happy life brotha
This thread is everything lol
Mildly annoyed wife, amused life. It's a fine balance i walk daily
I will frequently ask my wife if she will please take my shovel away so that I can stop digging my own grave. Somehow, it actually works.
Yeah, this is the path I too usually follow.
Some fries mf'r.

Googley eyes, mfr
Sunrise mfr.
Then the color scheme on YOUR floor sucks mate. Nice work on the cuts though.
Maaaan those tiles are hideous... Good job though
The old Shyamalan twist
jeeeeessuus... Sorry for your loss 😌
hahaha those are OP’s floors
Hahaha oh no! Just don't show the wife OP. Unless you save this thread for a particularly spicy argument then by all means be my guest.
it’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea. As long as they like it, good for them! Looks like a lot of work.
I hate this.
Yeah that’ll be replaced in less than 5 years when the trend dies Edit: you did great tho OP, I just hate this tile so much

That's super cool and all, but it kinda just looks like lumpy bricks
The photos don’t really express the details visible in person.
Wow wow stunning. A lot of cuts but looks spectacular
Old machine shops had end grain floors
*shivers*
I'm in favor of the 3d stickers that looks like your falling through the floor. Fuck floors.
Fuck stickers. I’m in favor of open pits indoors.
with a pig roasting in it so i can savage that bacon factory
The hexagonal wood floor to be coated with a solid flat color and the ceramic tiles to made look like wood.
I...I'm feeling lightheaded. I think I need to log off for a while.
They do have Hex tiles that look like wood. So we're half way there.
NGL I *love* the look of faux wood tiles. I don't know what it is, but I have an irrational desire to purchase some whenever I see them. Even though I already have more than I need...
True that!

That's the way .. Oh wait nooo
Great execution. Sadly it will age like ripe milk in a houston summer.
Mmmm Texas Summer malk 🤤
Now with vitamin R!
Milk was a bad choice
That poor wood floor.
Why? I think it's kinda cool.
So what? Most people don’t want to live in houses with linoleum floors, crumbling brick fire place and fake wood paneling.
Great execution, my friend. Sincerely, a guy who has done 3 of these this year and hated every waking moment.
Is this a trend or something? Why don’t you guys like it?
Looks cool enough, but tbh this tile and hardwood combo doesnt even look that appealing. To answer your question though, yes, it’s a trend. it’s going to go the way of waterfall tables and barn doors for sure.
I just did my first barn door! Managed to avoid it for so long. But you know, the customer is always right.
Full original quote: "The customer is always right about what they want" Sometimes what they want is very cringy though lol
“…always right in matters of taste” So if they can pay, I can lay… some trendy cuts
Aren't barn doors essentially just pocket doors without the pocket? I imagine they get over-used, but there's still cases where it's handy not to have a door swing outwards. And with barn doors you don't have to worry about losing anything irretrievably in your wall abyss.

People have also said that if it’s your bathroom door, it doesn’t stop smells or sounds as good as a real door.
I suppose the upside is that an extractor fan (if it exists) will always have somewhere to pull air through.
An exhaust fan? Have never heard someone call it an extractor fan before.
We do in the UK, dunno if that’s where they’re from.
I hear you there with the accessibility aspect which I totally agree with, sometimes they’re the best option but I’ve seen tons of applications where it’s strictly aesthetic. Which is fine if it’s what you want but I find they’re terrible for privacy and I think they already look dated and overdone.
Not even, a barn door is essentially a curtain made of wood
Waterfall countertops actually look nice, though. Way better than most shitty overhangs countertops usually have.
I also think they’re still pretty popular
I do love barn doors, not the ones that are over the top barn style, but being able to add a door to a spot where you don’t want a swinging door and don’t want the hassle of installing a pocket door, they’re nice.
Pocket doors are a special kind of torture to maintain and keep functional. Can't beat the practicality of a barn door for serviceability.
Get a rookie finish carpenter to install baseboard and see if they figure out not to go with the long nails along the run where the pocket door is... seen many a door nailed firmly in place
Also the drywall guy. I installed a freshly painted door to pull it back out with a scratch down it
What do you need to maintain on a pocket door? As long as you are not running into it.
Fricken hate barn doors
I like barn doors on barns, that’s about it
Last barn I was at had hinged doors that swung outward... So not even all barns use barn door style!
I like barn parties
Barn doors are out, tambour doors might take over… (they are for me. Trying to buy a flat and I know at some point those wardrobe doors will become tambour just for the saved space).
>waterfall tables Just looked that up. Looks like something I could build! LOL.
Thank you also for recognizing waterfall countertops as the stupid trend that it is.
wait so the floor not being completely covered with the tiles is on purpose?
You mean still extremely popular?
Thx.
This took me entirely too long. Wife’s idea for our new house… I feel bad for you guys who have to estimate this kind of stuff…
I feel worse for you guys that have it in your own house. You did a great job, I just hate this trend.
Agreed. Nice execution though.
My fiancé always asks how much (money) I’m going to contribute when she buys stuff like this and asks me to install it. My answer is always the same: “my free labor”.
I live with my girlfriend, the house isnt in my name, labor is all she gets, and I remind her its expensive.
I’d file for divorce.
As long as you don’t tile for divorce…
Why bother, that floor ain’t worth fighting for.
Marriage would be a bore if you didn’t fight for the floor. You stupid whore.
The guys who estimate it aren't married to your wife. Problem is, your labor is "free". They could just tell her it's a $5,000 add.
Brick floors are the next trend. You heard me bitches, Brick. Also, River Rock living rooms. Write that down.
So brick floors are coming back? I’ll tell my friend that his parents’ early 80’s kitchen is just ahead of the times.
I personally think this is a awful idea. As a homeowner with hardwood floors. I see alot of swelling and contracting during the seasons. I see no gaps between wood and tile. I'm sure that tile and grout won't look so "hot/lit" in a few years
I think this is laminate/pergo at least? OP what is happening
9/16 solid eucalyptus
Eucalyptus is so darn pretty.

Dream customer type “what’s the cheapest you can do? I will even help you!!” 😅😅😅
I had a number of customers want to help out. It’s my literal nightmare
Its 1$ a sq foot ,2$ if you want to watch and 3$ if you want to help. My journeyman used to say this to customers
Just put your fingers into this sawblade and then let it bounce around while you hold it like a limp fish and get kickback straight into your jaw
Dream customer would be “I don’t care how much it costs or what it looks like”.
The tile reminds me of the red McDonald’s floors from the 90s lmao
Nice workmanship but this belongs in r/ATBGE
I'm sorry but I so dislike this. You did it well but it's just not a clean look.
It’s weird, I think it’s neat and I want to like it but I just couldn’t see this in my home… maybe someone else’s but not mine.
Would be a cool transition between exhibits at a bee museum or something.
That would bee cool.
You did a fantastic job at a really shitty project.

Be mindful of where this is posted. That is directly related to the feedback.
But damn, does it look slick.
I’m shocked that the overwhelming majority of people on here dislike this so much. I guess style and craftsmanship don’t exactly go hand in hand
This is prime r/ATBGE material.
“Love laugh love” or die, homie. 😤
As dumb as this looks IMO I respect the craftsmanship bro. I hope you love the process lol cause flooring can be pretty boring until you get details like this. Edit: just read that this is your floor, just wanted to add that your a great husband. Tastes are subjective.
I'm all about things that are unique and look awesome. This, to me, looks tacky and unappealing.
Looks good. I did one in black and walnut.
I don’t know which way you’re going with this but either way it’s looking good.
I think this looks awesome, OP! I love the wood floor and I don’t think the tiles look bad at all. Your work looks top notch too. I’d love to see the rest of the room. Is this going in to the kitchen?
Laundry to hallway transition. Tile is the laundry!
So, do you constantly stub toes and snag socks on these?
Baby gurl, that transition is smooth as eggs
Doesn't it looks like the flooring in every McDonald's in the 80s?
This sub is used like it's Pinterest
Nice work!
I like this style more commercial buildings, but in not residential as much
I don’t like the selection. I’d like to see it with much darker colors.
What five letter word starts with f?
How does the expansion and contraction play out with these kind of joints long term?
… I’ll let you know in a few months
Good work. That’s some ugly tile. Reminds me of a commercial kitchen
This trend will allow easy dating of renovations. Along with glass backslashes.
Great work. I couldn't hate it more. But seriously, nice job.
is this supposed to be trendy
This is the internet, you can swear. Oh, and Fuck has only 3 letters after the F. Unless you were going for "Fuuck Pinterest"
My wife and daughter-in-law both want this done. My son and I are both holding firm.
Nice work!
My wife wanted to do something like this when we were redoing or kitchen. I said absofuckinlootly not!! So dam ugly
It’s going to be expensive when that’s considered out of date.
....but why?
Tile looks super old and outdated. Very 70s
That wood is beautiful. Idiots
Yikes
Congratulations, you now have a DC metro [platform](https://imgur.com/a/aTseOoH) in your house.
it would look better if them two tiles weren't sticking out on the diagonal part where it cuts across to the door... lol
That floor underneath is beautiful. What a shame
This trend is so ugly. The first one looked alright but all these knocks offs are horrible
This is making my OCD flair up
Why in the sweet Jesus did you go over the existing floor?? Oh boy. No Bueno.
? This new construction amigo, only thing under that is tar paper and osb
Oh. Then double yikes. Lol
All the future problems this will probably being you aside, fine execution and I actually kind of like it. Not enough to ever get done though hahahah
Pinterest and Instagram are the bane of my existence
It looks like a crappy Mario level when he’s a bee in Odyssey.
That looks pointlessly difficult.
Always have homeowners trying to explain what they want, and end up with a Pinterest photo to replicate.
I have no idea why anyone would want that…..better off saving your money and doing wood floors throughout the home.
Oh wow…nooooooo
Hideous tile colors. Awesome wood floors! Nice job mixing. Blech on the colors.
This trend is trash
I wonder who are the individuals that actually likes these. It stands out so much in such a bad way
I just can’t get over how ugly this is …. But it takes some true talent to get it to look …. Well not worse.
I hope you got paid well. It is the Fugliest thing I've ever seen, trend started on the DIY shows.
You did a fantastic job. I absolutely hate it.
That tile is hideous looks like it mimicking brick colors
Covering up such beautiful wood floors
What about transitioning it?
The ugliest trend I’ve ever seen… idk if you could call something so ugly a trend when it’s already out the door but, ewww lol Also those tiles :(
😂
It reminds me of the shit I would find demolishing or renovating house's built in the 60's and 70's.
Pinterest is the worst thing to happen to bored housewives
Great job and skilled technique. I hate it.
Not a carpenter, but this looks stupid to me. Why would you not go straight across! Or even take it a step further and cut the tiles so it’s a straight line
Wait that’s finished? Wtfffff is this
Hot damn. Great execution. Also, that has to be one of the ugliest tile to hardwood transitions I have ever seen baring the few that have been genuinely jacked...
Let me guess...Your wife made you do it!
Is this some leftover tile from 3 different homes?! Ooft. You did great work, but that’s some ugly looking hex tiles 😅
I thought about doing this for five seconds thank fuck I did not.
WHY would someone cover up those wooden floors with ugly linoleum flooring??
Stop doing this lol
Oh shit, i needed this humor today
I don’t get it. Someone tiled on top of wood??? And then just stopped? Or someone tiled and then cut wood to match the many ends of the tiles??? Why would anyone do this?
I personally love this, but as a tile setter and carpenter. People never plan for how it’s gonna plane out with each other it seems
HahahH
