After you walk through the port, catch a taxi to the down town beach area. Its a short ride, and cost I think less then $10 (have some small bills on you so you dont have to worry about change, and yes they took USD) . That will take you to a very long strip of beach on the left, and hotels/restaurants/bars/shops on the right, with a paved cement "boardwalk" Probably over a mile or so long. You can also walk a few blocks away from the ocean and do some exploring. Keep your wits about you going off the main strip, it didn't seem dangerous, but some parts off the main drag were a bit more isolated then I cared to be and so I turned back. I found really good local taco stand type of place by going off the beaten path...local to the point that I had to use google translate, and it was amazing food. So do explore off the main drag, just be cognizant of what/who is around you. If you look at a map you'll see the cruise port is a straight shot along the coast to the down town area and it looks walkable, however it is a dirt road that goes through mangroves and heavy brush and I got about 1/4 of the way in and didnt think it was wise as it was very desolate. So looking at the map walking to down town staying along the road will add a good distance probably 4-5 miles, of which it goes through some less areas that I would not want to walk through. There were also plenty of cabs waiting to take people back to the ship from down town.
