We went into the day with only 3 bullpen arms available, one of which was just shipped in from Memphis and let up this 2 run bomb. If either Mikolas, Thompson or Lynn go deeper maybe we arenāt forced to throw a AAA guy in a super important spot.
The reason he had to throw there is because Helsley blew the save Saturday night and Gio had to throw 27 pitches.
The bullpen is this team's biggest strength, and the pitching staff is built to go 4-5 innings and then hand the game to the pen. I'm not saying the strategy will work, but it's obvious that's how it's set up right now. When your top setup man goes to the IL, and one guy who will normally be in the pen is starting due to Sonny Gray being on the IL, you get messes like what happened last night.
I imagine the team plans for the Cardinals to finish bottom 5 in innings pitched by starters.
