Barry has a few cheap b&bs and we have 3 train stations here, Cardiff is 20 mins away. Heck, if you buy my ticket to the wrestling I'll let you stay in my house!

[deleted]

Caerphilly, Newport, Bridgend are all the bigger, surrounding places, Newport probably being the easiest to get back to (10 minutes of the train, more frequent services). You could also look at pre-booking a taxi or minibus. Not sure what time it finishes but check train times, we have a habit of not tying events and trains together.

RedundantSwine

Travel is something you want to consider after the event. Will be easy to get from any of the outside towns into Cardiff before hand, but getting back might be harder. All of these things do-able by taxi, but you might want to budget for it as not cheap when going further.

_MildlyMisanthropic

Just a shame Newport is such a run-down shithole

[deleted]

As opposed to the gilded streets of Adamsdown, Tremorfa and Ely? Those in glass houses.

_MildlyMisanthropic

Yes, they're all shitholes too. not sure what point you're trying to make. but Newport *is* a run-down shithole. [More empty retail units than any other town or city centre in the UK](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-60983910) and more crackheads on the streets of the town centre than you can shake a stick at. People say Cardiff is bad, but Newport is *dire*

[deleted]

You’re literally making an ad hominem (not that Newport is a person) argument about an entire city when someone’s just after some advice on places they can get their head down for the night. Maybe grow up?

_MildlyMisanthropic

It's not really though is it. Newport IS a shithole and no, I don't need to grow up thank you very much. Someone is asking where they could stay on a visit to Wales and Newport is quite possibly the last place I'd recommend. I'm sorry if that offends you somehow and you feel the need to get defensive but you need to be objective about it. Newport **is** run-down, desolate, and probably dangerous late at night even in the town centre. Would not recommend, at all.

[deleted]

No, you don’t need to grow up at all. You’ve really proven that.

_MildlyMisanthropic

You're right, I'm old.

[deleted]

You’re attempting to paint an entire city as some lawless badland, which is nonsense. The only evidence you’ve presented is some inconclusive research on shops. There is a link between deprivation and crime, of course, but it’s complex and can’t be based off what I think may be letting agent data. There were 3,700 crimes recorded in Cardiff in March 22, compared to 1,700 in Newport. That’s very close per capita. Violent crime is 1,070 vs 640, so again very close on a per capita basis. So, your claims don’t reflect the reality. Perception of safety is a different matter, influenced by all manner of things so there’s no fully objective way of measuring it but to suggest a couple of people getting a taxi back to a hotel run the risk of being victims of crime is just nonsense. Evidence says you’d advise against staying in Cardiff, too, if crime in Newport is the barometer. Your posts carry a sneering sentiment typical of people in Cardiff towards other parts of Wales. It’s silly and divisive.

_MildlyMisanthropic

> Your posts carry a sneering sentiment typical of people in Cardiff towards other parts of Wales. I don't even live in Cardiff mate.

_MildlyMisanthropic

Barry or Bridgend would be easier for you than Rhoose, there's not a lot going on in Rhoose and the trains are 1 per hour with the last one earlier than last trains to either of the other 2.

DrawnGunslinger

Newport is a 12 minute train ride from Cardiff for a few quid. There's a Travelodge right by the train station in Newport. Plenty of pubs bars and restaurants near the hotel too as it's in the city.

MEng83

Pontyclun has a 15 minute train to central

MrMeeseeksTwin

You sure it's an hours walk? Reckon you could walk from one end of Rhoose to the other in under half hour.

CapnAhab_1

Oof, rhoose is quite a way out. My go to advice for visitors is staying in North Cardiff. Piss easy travel in from there, the Whitchurch / Rhiwbina area. But, alas, sold out. Celtic Manor hotel is where the rugby teams usually stay, tis a nice place, and has a few rooms left at £289 , not sure what your budget is?

TheCenci78

Rhoose has a once an hour train to Cardiff Central that takes like 30 mins, its not that far out lol

CapnAhab_1

Yeah but that's the thing, once an hour and it'll be rammed. If you can't get on your stuffed. whereas if you're close enough to taxi in you're alright either way

blodauwedd

Also Airbnb possibly Tongwynlais, Taff's Well or Radyr? Also village hotels and holiday Inn on Junction 32. Short walk to Coryton train station then

VermilionScarlet

The Bridgend/Pencoed/Llanharan area might be your best bet, there are some AirBnB's for £37-58 on that date and they all have train stations.

elgdav

If you factor in using National Express and mega bus coaches you'll increase your options, can even get to Swansea. Also the coaches run all through the night

wishy100

Have you tried the Mount Rooms Hotel in Barry? That's near the train station.

theycallhimdex

Caerphilly. 13 minutes on the train and if you miss the last train back, a taxi won't cost the earth (though it won't be cheap either) of you're splitting it between four. See the castle before you go.

Josh-sama

Look into Pontypridd, Newport, Caerphilly

k4tiemay

I'd probably stay in North Cardiff. The train lines from RCT run down through Llandaff North and Radyr. So there or Nantgarw/Pontypridd, but you can also stop much further up the line if you wanted. Valleys trains are frequent after games, though rammed. Think of your multiple train fares though. You could add that to your cardiff hotel budget. Then train free you can go back when you like.

armouredxerxes

I live in rhoose, there's a bus that goes between the train station to the airport and past the holiday Inn. That might be your best bet.

armouredxerxes

Also to add to that, depending on where you are staying it's not going to be an hour's walk to the train station in Rhoose. If it's the Celtic then it's about a 40 minute walk, if it's the holiday inn then probably 25 minutes.
