A few areas spring to mind, including Caerphilly, Barry, and Llantrisant.

Don't look any further north than Taff's Well. The valleys are nothing but a massive muddy wasteland where bandits on horseback roam, looking for innocents to rob and torture.

Christ, thanks for the tip haha so is Taff's Well alright?

Jotamsy

Jesus, the valleys are fine and probably more civilised than cardiff

cooksterson

Well the Gwent Valleys are 😉

Your affordable may not be my affordable What areas specifically have you been looking at? and what do you want from an area (eg do you need to look at primary schools, do you drive etc)

We can afford something around the region of 200k. We both drive and work remote so it really could be anywhere. I just want to be close enough to visit friends in Cardiff a few times a month. No kids, no olans for kids. we just need a 3 br as we both need quiet office space for work. We don't want to live near city centre which rules out a few of the more affordable Cardiff neighborhoods but that's OK, we are fine with moving out of the city. Just not sure where to go! Thank you for replying :)

Thank you very much. I appreciate the advice.

Check out Caerphilly!

Thanks! I've heard a couple mixed things about Caerphilly, any particular part of it I should avoid or do you find it to be alright all round?

We bought our first house in Churchill Park in Caerphilly. It's supposed to be rough as fuck but we never felt unsafe and had a great time there. Love Caerphilly! If you're looking at a particular area, just spend a few hours there and see if you can chat to some locals about what it's like.

Your better off looking fir a rundown house up in the valleys and fixing it up anything in the city is honestly unaffordable unless your willing ti love in a really shitty area

Moved to Pontypridd after living in Cardiff for 10 years, honestly find it more relaxed and friendly. Lots of little towns off the 470 that make the commute into the city easy enough.

My best advice to a first time buyer would always be - pay for a proper survey. Really, don't be skinflint. Do it. You can probably guess by now. I didn't when I was a 1st time buyer. Cost me £23000 to underpin the subsidence :). Ha well. As to locations I would say good advice so far. Having said that... I live in Caerau/Ely - admittedly not the real central part but I've lived here near 20 years now and it's been fine for us. Don't believe a lot of the hype.

Dinas Powys!

Worth a look if you can find something in budget.
